Unhinge to shallow
66 lessons
Course Progress
The "unhinge" (or ulnar deviation) of the wrists is one of the main arm shallowers in the golf swing. Golfers who struggle with low point control or who tend to get steep in transition (without lunging), may need to improve this movement to resolve any issues with contact.
If you fall into either of these categories, you can start by "presetting" this pattern and then working through some 9-to-3 swings. This should provide an immediate sense of:
(1) How the wrists should feel at impact.
(2) How the body must rotate now that the club has shallowed early enough.
From there, you should progress by adding speed and power. However, the focus will now be to combine your pivot and "single-leg jump" with the timing of the unhinge. This should feel more athletic, while also engraining the proper sequence for straighter and longer shots.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:06.560
This drill is pre-setting the unhinge. Now the unhinge is one of the main arm
2
00:00:06.560 --> 00:00:12.080
shallowing movements. So this can be very helpful for golfers who struggle with
3
00:00:12.080 --> 00:00:16.280
low point control. This can be very golfer or important for golfers who
4
00:00:16.280 --> 00:00:20.960
struggle with getting really steep especially if they tend to get steep
5
00:00:20.960 --> 00:00:27.800
more down in this zone. Without having a major lunge it's the lack of unhinge
6
00:00:27.800 --> 00:00:34.040
movement that tends to cause the club to get steep as it enters the release. So
7
00:00:34.040 --> 00:00:34.340
in
8
00:00:34.340 --> 00:00:38.600
this drill we're basically going to almost lock that wrist and do as much
9
00:00:38.600 --> 00:00:44.760
unhinge as we can. Keep it there and perform a 9 to 3 or maybe even a 10 to 2
10
00:00:44.760 --> 00:00:49.640
style shot where we're just focusing on seeing if we can coordinate going
11
00:00:49.640 --> 00:00:56.160
through the ball while keeping that unhinge. So you're gonna get set up. You're
12
00:00:56.160 --> 00:01:00.480
going to preset that unhinge. Now you'll see from this down the line I'm not
13
00:01:00.480 --> 00:01:06.000
going straight down the target line. I'm going more almost back on a 30 degree
14
00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:12.280
angle or the wrist is working more straight down vertically. So I'm going to
15
00:01:12.280 --> 00:01:18.200
preset that unhinge from here and then from here I'm just going to rotate my
16
00:01:18.200 --> 00:01:26.920
body into that good follow-through position. So for some golfers who tend
17
00:01:26.920 --> 00:01:33.040
to get steep because they maintain too much of that vertical lag kind of like
18
00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:39.240
this, feeling that that get it gets the club wider or that the unhinge has
19
00:01:39.240 --> 00:01:45.640
already happened here is going to feel very different but that can be a
20
00:01:45.640 --> 00:01:50.320
critical component for shallowing out the swing or forgetting the path to be a
21
00:01:50.320 --> 00:01:56.320
little bit more into out because that unhinge widens the arc and creates a
22
00:01:56.320 --> 00:02:02.600
much better flat bottom of the swing. So one more time so we're gonna bring it
23
00:02:02.600 --> 00:02:07.840
back preset that unhinge so now it's close to a 9 to 3 style swing and then
24
00:02:07.840 --> 00:02:12.680
from here I'm just going to try and pivot my body all the way into that
25
00:02:12.680 --> 00:02:18.360
follow-through position. Once I've done that from a dead stop then I can try
26
00:02:18.360 --> 00:02:25.000
doing it in more of a continuous motion. So from a continuous motion I can
27
00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:25.160
bring
28
00:02:25.160 --> 00:02:32.980
it back, bring it back, unhinge first, come through second. So it's a little
29
00:02:32.980 --> 00:02:33.160
bit
30
00:02:33.160 --> 00:02:39.160
out of time just because it's this shortened version of the swing but
31
00:02:39.160 --> 00:02:45.190
continuous motion I'm gonna bring it back, unhinge get to that same follow-
32
00:02:45.190 --> 00:02:45.480
through
33
00:02:45.480 --> 00:02:51.520
position. So I'm feeling that that unhinge is happening as I'm creating
34
00:02:51.520 --> 00:02:57.160
this lag as my lower body has already left my arms behind. Then the last
35
00:02:57.160 --> 00:03:03.880
version would be trying to take this more into a full swing. The key here is
36
00:03:03.880 --> 00:03:08.360
is feeling that that unhinge doesn't release my lag because I'm still
37
00:03:08.360 --> 00:03:13.000
keeping the the rotational angle. I'm still keeping this lag back here by
38
00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:16.760
keeping the extension of the wrist. I'm just bringing while keeping that
39
00:03:16.760 --> 00:03:20.920
extension of the wrist I'm pointing the club more down instead of pointing the
40
00:03:20.920 --> 00:03:27.640
club shaft more up vertically. So now throwing that feeling into more of a
41
00:03:27.640 --> 00:03:36.120
full swing. Slipped a little bit so it went right but hopefully you could see
42
00:03:36.120 --> 00:03:44.280
the timing. The feeling of the timing is very similar to just doing this little
43
00:03:44.280 --> 00:03:50.680
preset 9 to 3. I find that that works really well if you tend to get steep in
44
00:03:50.680 --> 00:03:54.440
this middle third and this is one of the easiest ways to practice getting used
45
00:03:54.440 --> 00:03:54.600
to
46
00:03:54.600 --> 00:03:57.940
what it'll be like to hit from this more unhinged position.
