Mastering ground contact is one of the keys to mastering solid contact with your irons.

Mastering ground contact, called low point control, relates to two big keys. The position of your upper body (sternum) and the movement of your arms. In this video, we'll dig into what low point is, what creates solid contact, and how you can start to train it.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.270
In this concept video, we're going to take a look at the first skill in the

2
00:00:08.270 --> 00:00:09.160
program, which

3
00:00:09.160 --> 00:00:11.260
is the low point skill.

4
00:00:11.260 --> 00:00:15.400
So the ability to strike the ball solid.

5
00:00:15.400 --> 00:00:19.240
One of the phrases that I use with a lot of students is there's three goals.

6
00:00:19.240 --> 00:00:23.720
We want solid contact, we want to control the shape, and we want to hit it far.

7
00:00:23.720 --> 00:00:29.610
In my teaching, I tend to go for solid contact first, followed by straight,

8
00:00:29.610 --> 00:00:31.480
followed by far.

9
00:00:31.480 --> 00:00:33.040
And that's what we're going to do in this program.

10
00:00:33.040 --> 00:00:38.480
So this first series, we're going to go through solid contact.

11
00:00:38.480 --> 00:00:43.350
We're going to talk about how the low point of the swing relates to solid

12
00:00:43.350 --> 00:00:44.360
contact, and

13
00:00:44.360 --> 00:00:49.760
how looking at where you're contacting the ground, or where your club is bott

14
00:00:49.760 --> 00:00:50.600
oming out,

15
00:00:50.600 --> 00:00:55.320
and help you decode what's going on with your overall ball striking.

16
00:00:55.320 --> 00:01:00.190
And we'll also talk about shaft lean, and why that's important for iron play,

17
00:01:00.190 --> 00:01:02.160
iron consistency,

18
00:01:02.160 --> 00:01:04.800
solid contact, whatever the ball's sitting on the ground.

19
00:01:04.800 --> 00:01:09.970
We're going to go through a bunch of drills that will help you explore this

20
00:01:09.970 --> 00:01:10.640
idea.

21
00:01:10.640 --> 00:01:16.000
But in this video, we're going to go through mostly the general concepts.

22
00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.880
Okay, so when we're talking about low point, the thing that I like to use first

23
00:01:20.880 --> 00:01:21.320
is the

24
00:01:21.320 --> 00:01:22.760
low point line.

25
00:01:22.760 --> 00:01:25.710
So there's another video off to the right, where you can watch for a little bit

26
00:01:25.710 --> 00:01:26.440
more detail

27
00:01:26.440 --> 00:01:28.760
about it.

28
00:01:28.760 --> 00:01:35.040
But basically, this low point line, or the MAC line, as it's sometimes called,

29
00:01:35.040 --> 00:01:36.300
is looking

30
00:01:36.300 --> 00:01:40.400
at the overall shape of your impact position.

31
00:01:40.400 --> 00:01:45.020
So if you're getting into an impact position, where basically left shoulder,

32
00:01:45.020 --> 00:01:45.760
left hip, left

33
00:01:45.760 --> 00:01:51.980
foot, left hand, left arm, and the club ultimately line up in a pretty vertical

34
00:01:51.980 --> 00:01:53.120
fashion after

35
00:01:53.120 --> 00:01:57.160
impact, then we probably had shaft lean.

36
00:01:57.160 --> 00:02:00.440
We had a good chance of hitting the ball first.

37
00:02:00.440 --> 00:02:03.760
That's part of how we're going to get this solid contact.

38
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:05.500
We can use this as a diagnostic.

39
00:02:05.500 --> 00:02:08.520
When you're looking at your video, this is a great place to start when you're

40
00:02:08.520 --> 00:02:09.000
looking

41
00:02:09.000 --> 00:02:14.280
at solid contact, or the hands back, or the hips back, is the chest back, or

42
00:02:14.280 --> 00:02:15.120
are things

43
00:02:15.120 --> 00:02:17.280
too far forward.

44
00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:21.900
Any of that can give you a good starting point for analyzing why you're not

45
00:02:21.900 --> 00:02:22.520
making a solid

46
00:02:22.520 --> 00:02:25.080
contact as you would like.

47
00:02:25.080 --> 00:02:30.550
Now one other thing that you can focus in on is the depth and the 3D location

48
00:02:30.550 --> 00:02:31.080
of the

49
00:02:31.080 --> 00:02:32.080
ground contact.

50
00:02:32.080 --> 00:02:36.700
Okay, when it comes to looking at solid contact, we want to look at the swing

51
00:02:36.700 --> 00:02:37.440
shape and the

52
00:02:37.440 --> 00:02:39.560
low point line first.

53
00:02:39.560 --> 00:02:44.430
So over here is a picture of impact, and the low point line is basically that

54
00:02:44.430 --> 00:02:45.480
yellow line,

55
00:02:45.480 --> 00:02:49.500
which is a few inches in front of impact, maybe up to four to six inches in

56
00:02:49.500 --> 00:02:50.080
front of

57
00:02:50.080 --> 00:02:55.880
the golf ball, and basically we're looking at how well you're able to get the

58
00:02:55.880 --> 00:02:56.720
left leg,

59
00:02:56.720 --> 00:03:03.450
the left arm, the club shaft, and the left shoulder kind of all in line with

60
00:03:03.450 --> 00:03:04.840
that vertical

61
00:03:04.840 --> 00:03:07.420
line just after impact.

62
00:03:07.420 --> 00:03:11.200
If you get into a relationship, something like that, it means you're going to

63
00:03:11.200 --> 00:03:11.840
have some

64
00:03:11.840 --> 00:03:18.300
shaft lean, and it means that you're going to strike the golf ball before

65
00:03:18.300 --> 00:03:19.760
making contact

66
00:03:19.760 --> 00:03:22.280
with the golf ball, or you're in a very good position too.

67
00:03:22.280 --> 00:03:26.900
So this is a great place to start the diagnostic of what's going on with my

68
00:03:26.900 --> 00:03:27.480
swing.

69
00:03:27.480 --> 00:03:31.320
Why am I not making solid contact?

70
00:03:31.320 --> 00:03:37.550
In general, the swing shape in order to do this is we're going to have the

71
00:03:37.550 --> 00:03:38.460
center of

72
00:03:38.460 --> 00:03:41.780
the swing shifted in front of the golf ball.

73
00:03:41.780 --> 00:03:49.280
So let's say that this line right here represents a vertical line kind of like

74
00:03:49.280 --> 00:03:50.880
this, and I've

75
00:03:50.880 --> 00:03:55.100
got the center of my golf swing ahead of it.

76
00:03:55.100 --> 00:04:00.310
I want to basically make contact with the golf ball somewhere around here in

77
00:04:00.310 --> 00:04:01.020
order to

78
00:04:01.020 --> 00:04:03.720
make solid contact.

79
00:04:03.720 --> 00:04:08.070
That helps with minimizing getting ground and grass in between the golf ball,

80
00:04:08.070 --> 00:04:08.760
so I get more

81
00:04:08.760 --> 00:04:13.940
energy transfer, and by creating shaft lean, I'm going to strike the golf ball

82
00:04:13.940 --> 00:04:14.640
higher up

83
00:04:14.640 --> 00:04:19.260
on the face or closer to the center of the club head, so I'm going to get

84
00:04:19.260 --> 00:04:20.280
maximum energy

85
00:04:20.280 --> 00:04:22.600
transfer that way.

86
00:04:22.600 --> 00:04:27.160
If, for example, I was hitting on this part of the circle, then the club would

87
00:04:27.160 --> 00:04:27.720
be coming

88
00:04:27.720 --> 00:04:30.880
up into the ball, and I'd hit a lot of fat and thin shots.

89
00:04:30.880 --> 00:04:35.510
So in order to make solid contact, it's not so much that I'm just trying to hit

90
00:04:35.510 --> 00:04:36.100
down on

91
00:04:36.100 --> 00:04:37.100
it.

92
00:04:37.100 --> 00:04:41.450
I'm really just trying to shift my whole swing slightly in front of the golf

93
00:04:41.450 --> 00:04:43.260
ball for an iron,

94
00:04:43.260 --> 00:04:45.140
and we'll get the driver slightly behind.

95
00:04:45.140 --> 00:04:49.720
But for solid contact and kind of our stock swing, we're trying to get the

96
00:04:49.720 --> 00:04:49.980
ability to

97
00:04:49.980 --> 00:04:53.820
have the bottom of the swing out in front of the golf ball just like this.

98
00:04:53.820 --> 00:04:59.020
So that gets you kind of in the ballpark as far as solid contact goes.

99
00:04:59.020 --> 00:05:03.640
But we also want to look at how the club is contacting the ground, both in

100
00:05:03.640 --> 00:05:04.660
terms of depth,

101
00:05:04.660 --> 00:05:10.200
as well as the 3D location, or where is that ground contact compared to the

102
00:05:10.200 --> 00:05:11.220
golf ball.

103
00:05:11.220 --> 00:05:17.020
So the depth is pretty easy if I have the ground like this, and I've got the

104
00:05:17.020 --> 00:05:17.620
golf ball

105
00:05:17.620 --> 00:05:21.900
sitting on top of the ground, kind of like this.

106
00:05:21.900 --> 00:05:27.700
My overall goal, if I take the shape of my swing, the overall goal is to have

107
00:05:27.700 --> 00:05:28.500
the bottom

108
00:05:28.500 --> 00:05:31.380
of the swing slightly in front like this.

109
00:05:31.380 --> 00:05:35.030
But if the bottom of the swing was a few inches underground, you could see that

110
00:05:35.030 --> 00:05:35.300
that

111
00:05:35.300 --> 00:05:39.320
pool hooper, that swing would make contact with the ground behind the golf ball

112
00:05:39.320 --> 00:05:39.580
.

113
00:05:39.580 --> 00:05:44.650
So the goal is to have the bottom of the swing forward, but not so deep that it

114
00:05:44.650 --> 00:05:45.460
messes with

115
00:05:45.460 --> 00:05:49.420
my low point contact as well.

116
00:05:49.420 --> 00:05:54.060
So you can monitor the height of the divot, or the depth of the divot, you can

117
00:05:54.060 --> 00:05:54.700
monitor

118
00:05:54.700 --> 00:05:59.320
if you're still seeing grass, or is it going in really deep, or am I not making

119
00:05:59.320 --> 00:05:59.820
a divot

120
00:05:59.820 --> 00:06:00.820
at all?

121
00:06:00.820 --> 00:06:07.180
Some golfers will air on more picking the golf ball like this, which gives you

122
00:06:07.180 --> 00:06:07.900
a little

123
00:06:07.900 --> 00:06:12.650
less margin of air compared to a golf swing, the bottom of a little bit more

124
00:06:12.650 --> 00:06:13.620
like that.

125
00:06:13.620 --> 00:06:18.270
The 3D aspect is from this perspective, where am I making contact with the

126
00:06:18.270 --> 00:06:19.020
ground?

127
00:06:19.020 --> 00:06:23.640
Am I making contact with the ground in the middle of the golf ball, or too far

128
00:06:23.640 --> 00:06:24.180
away from

129
00:06:24.180 --> 00:06:29.030
me, that would be more like shanks, or a shank heel contact, or am I making

130
00:06:29.030 --> 00:06:29.820
contact with

131
00:06:29.820 --> 00:06:33.940
the ground too far close to me, that would be more toe contact.

132
00:06:33.940 --> 00:06:39.740
So when we're looking at low point, the number one thing is looking at where is

133
00:06:39.740 --> 00:06:40.380
the low point

134
00:06:40.380 --> 00:06:44.170
compared to the golf ball on the ground towards and away from the target, but

135
00:06:44.170 --> 00:06:44.940
the secondary

136
00:06:44.940 --> 00:06:50.120
aspect is looking at it towards and away from you, which would be heel toe

137
00:06:50.120 --> 00:06:51.060
contact.

138
00:06:51.060 --> 00:06:55.620
Okay, in general, the two main factors that relate to this low point are where

139
00:06:55.620 --> 00:06:56.060
is my upper

140
00:06:56.060 --> 00:06:59.980
body in space and the timing of my arm extension.

141
00:06:59.980 --> 00:07:05.850
So the more that I've gotten forward, the more that I've shifted forward and

142
00:07:05.850 --> 00:07:06.500
turned

143
00:07:06.500 --> 00:07:11.150
my body, so the more that my chest or my sternum is pointing out in front of

144
00:07:11.150 --> 00:07:12.660
the golf ball,

145
00:07:12.660 --> 00:07:19.110
in general, the more that the club is going to bottom out forward of the golf

146
00:07:19.110 --> 00:07:19.900
ball.

147
00:07:19.900 --> 00:07:25.150
The more that my body has stood up, hung back, stayed over my right foot,

148
00:07:25.150 --> 00:07:26.540
lacked rotation,

149
00:07:26.540 --> 00:07:30.460
the more that the club is going to contact the ground behind the golf ball.

150
00:07:30.460 --> 00:07:35.080
Got other videos in this program where you can dig into that just a little bit

151
00:07:35.080 --> 00:07:35.660
deeper.

152
00:07:35.660 --> 00:07:39.260
The secondary piece would be the timing of the arm extension, so the earlier

153
00:07:39.260 --> 00:07:39.660
that my

154
00:07:39.660 --> 00:07:46.020
arms extend, and that could be either straightening the arms or flipping the

155
00:07:46.020 --> 00:07:47.900
wrists, the earlier

156
00:07:47.900 --> 00:07:52.940
that I do that, the more that I will contact the ground behind the golf ball.

157
00:07:52.940 --> 00:07:57.290
The later that I do that, the more that the swing will bottom out ahead of the

158
00:07:57.290 --> 00:07:57.960
golf ball.

159
00:07:57.960 --> 00:08:01.410
So these are our two main factors that we're going to work through in this

160
00:08:01.410 --> 00:08:02.100
program.

161
00:08:02.100 --> 00:08:07.280
And in this kind of first run through looking at low point, we're going to

162
00:08:07.280 --> 00:08:08.420
attack the two

163
00:08:08.420 --> 00:08:11.940
big picture items relating to each one of these.

164
00:08:11.940 --> 00:08:16.570
Okay, so the first objective is we're just going to work with as little swing

165
00:08:16.570 --> 00:08:17.220
thoughts

166
00:08:17.220 --> 00:08:18.220
as possible.

167
00:08:18.220 --> 00:08:22.170
All we're going to do is we're going to do the playing with low point drill

168
00:08:22.170 --> 00:08:22.820
where you're

169
00:08:22.820 --> 00:08:28.180
going to take some Dr. Scholl's foot spray or draw a line with a T, and you're

170
00:08:28.180 --> 00:08:29.040
basically

171
00:08:29.040 --> 00:08:33.890
going to look at how well you can contact the ground, either slightly behind or

172
00:08:33.890 --> 00:08:34.540
slightly

173
00:08:34.540 --> 00:08:35.780
in front of the golf ball.

174
00:08:35.780 --> 00:08:40.430
You're going to look at how precise and how well you can control ground contact

175
00:08:40.430 --> 00:08:40.740
.

176
00:08:40.740 --> 00:08:44.330
When you're building your swing, this is a theme that will show up through a

177
00:08:44.330 --> 00:08:44.700
lot of

178
00:08:44.700 --> 00:08:46.940
the program.

179
00:08:46.940 --> 00:08:51.980
You want to start slow, so slow motion swings, and you want to start small and

180
00:08:51.980 --> 00:08:53.100
work bigger.

181
00:08:53.100 --> 00:08:57.990
So in general, you're going to work on nine to threes, ten to twos, and full

182
00:08:57.990 --> 00:08:58.820
swings.

183
00:08:58.820 --> 00:09:03.660
So a nine to three is basically waist height to waist height.

184
00:09:03.660 --> 00:09:09.060
A ten to two is more arm parallel to arm parallel or club vertical to club

185
00:09:09.060 --> 00:09:10.140
vertical.

186
00:09:10.140 --> 00:09:15.010
And then your full swing is going to be all the way up to the end of your back

187
00:09:15.010 --> 00:09:15.580
swing and

188
00:09:15.580 --> 00:09:19.980
then all the way into the end of your follow through.

189
00:09:19.980 --> 00:09:24.620
In general, if you make better contact with your full swing than the shorter

190
00:09:24.620 --> 00:09:25.340
swings, it's

191
00:09:25.340 --> 00:09:27.300
usually a release issue.

192
00:09:27.300 --> 00:09:30.870
If you make better contact with the short swings and struggle with the full

193
00:09:30.870 --> 00:09:31.660
swing, then the

194
00:09:31.660 --> 00:09:36.820
full swing problem is usually more of a transition or power source issue.

195
00:09:36.820 --> 00:09:41.170
But we'll dig into that when we get more into trouble shooting in the third

196
00:09:41.170 --> 00:09:41.580
round.

197
00:09:41.580 --> 00:09:43.780
So we're going to press pause here.

198
00:09:43.780 --> 00:09:45.180
This is the end of this first video.

199
00:09:45.180 --> 00:09:48.800
You're going to do the practicing or playing around with low point, just to

200
00:09:48.800 --> 00:09:49.540
assess your

201
00:09:49.540 --> 00:09:52.980
overall skill at how good you are at controlling the low point.

202
00:09:52.980 --> 00:09:57.600
And then in the next video, we're going to go into a little bit more of a

203
00:09:57.600 --> 00:09:58.220
process for

204
00:09:58.220 --> 00:10:03.860
how you can systematically learn to control it better.
