The ultimate test of face and path control.

The 9 Shot Drill is used to calibrate your face to path, path, and low point control in a functional way. To complete the drill, you must hit all 9 ball flights - 3 different curves with 3 different heights.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.520
This is the famous nine-shot drill. So the nine-shot drill is one of the

2
00:00:05.520 --> 00:00:11.040
tried-and-true tested drills for really refining your face and path and low

3
00:00:11.040 --> 00:00:16.600
point control, basically understanding all your track-man parameters. So the

4
00:00:16.600 --> 00:00:23.640
nine-shot drill is basically taking the launch direction and creating a grid

5
00:00:23.640 --> 00:00:23.880
and

6
00:00:23.880 --> 00:00:29.800
you're going to have high, medium, low, and you're going to have draw straight

7
00:00:29.800 --> 00:00:34.960
fade. And there's really a variety of different ways you can use it. There's no

8
00:00:34.960 --> 00:00:40.720
one right way. You can try to hit low draw, low straight, low fade, medium draw

9
00:00:40.720 --> 00:00:40.740
,

10
00:00:40.740 --> 00:00:45.840
medium straight, medium fade, high draw, high straight, high fade. Or you could

11
00:00:45.840 --> 00:00:46.040
go

12
00:00:46.040 --> 00:00:52.400
all the draws, all the straits, all the fades, or you can do random. I've had

13
00:00:52.400 --> 00:00:55.680
juniors, you know, both of them practicing on the same thing, and we'll

14
00:00:55.680 --> 00:00:59.760
play tic-tac-toe where you've got to kind of hit the shots to block each other.

15
00:00:59.760 --> 00:01:04.440
There's a variety of ways you can use it. But the whole purpose is to refine

16
00:01:04.440 --> 00:01:04.960
your

17
00:01:04.960 --> 00:01:10.880
path and your face control so that you can adjust it close enough to make it

18
00:01:10.880 --> 00:01:14.120
draw, open enough to make it fade, or get it pretty close to hit it reasonably

19
00:01:14.120 --> 00:01:19.520
straight. And you can control the trajectory with your low point control

20
00:01:19.520 --> 00:01:25.960
and where your upper body is in space. So the easiest way to make the

21
00:01:25.960 --> 00:01:26.560
adjustments

22
00:01:26.560 --> 00:01:32.440
is just with setup changes. Moving the ball back will help it go low. Moving

23
00:01:32.440 --> 00:01:32.540
the

24
00:01:32.540 --> 00:01:37.200
ball forward will help it go high. Moving the ball back will make the path a

25
00:01:37.200 --> 00:01:40.720
little bit more into out and make it easier to draw it. Assuming you get the

26
00:01:40.720 --> 00:01:46.040
club face closed enough, moving the ball forward will help move the path left,

27
00:01:46.040 --> 00:01:50.040
which will make it easier to fade the ball and launch it higher, assuming you

28
00:01:50.040 --> 00:01:55.800
don't close the face too much. So anyway, there's a variety of different ways

29
00:01:55.800 --> 00:01:55.960
to

30
00:01:55.960 --> 00:01:59.400
do it. We'll do it with simple setup changes and we'll do it with movement

31
00:01:59.400 --> 00:02:04.720
changes. I like to start with just kind of whatever your stock swing is and

32
00:02:04.720 --> 00:02:05.000
just

33
00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:14.480
hit a normal everyday shot. So for me, that one there was pretty much medium

34
00:02:14.480 --> 00:02:20.750
straight. So now if I want to induce a little bit more of a draw to it, I'm

35
00:02:20.750 --> 00:02:21.120
going

36
00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:27.560
to move the ball position slightly backward. Now, because I'm not really

37
00:02:27.560 --> 00:02:33.640
doing it in any particular order, this is likely going to launch low and we'll

38
00:02:33.640 --> 00:02:41.240
go for low straight. So we're gonna try not to close the face too much. So

39
00:02:41.240 --> 00:02:41.400
there

40
00:02:41.400 --> 00:02:45.880
we've got low. It did fade just a touch, but not enough for me to consider it a

41
00:02:45.880 --> 00:02:50.760
fade. I'll call that that was pretty straight. So now I'm going to stick with

42
00:02:50.760 --> 00:02:57.320
the low shot by moving it back, but now I want to make it fade. This is the low

43
00:02:57.320 --> 00:03:02.000
fade and the high draw are the two hardest shots. So the low fade, even though

44
00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:06.520
I've got it back, I have to make sure that I get the path outside in. So I'm

45
00:03:06.520 --> 00:03:11.360
gonna tend to try to decrease my axis tilt and almost keep my upper body more

46
00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:18.120
ahead and maybe even swing a little bit more outside to in with my arms. I can

47
00:03:18.120 --> 00:03:23.580
potentially even get a little bit more open with my body, but make sure that I

48
00:03:23.580 --> 00:03:32.280
still keep it back in order to launch it low. That was borderline medium. That

49
00:03:32.280 --> 00:03:35.760
didn't stay quite as low as I would want, but that did have a pretty good

50
00:03:35.760 --> 00:03:43.120
amount of fade to it. Okay, so next one I'm going to play the low draw. This is

51
00:03:43.120 --> 00:03:47.200
usually one of the easier ones, and you'll see that this makes a really good

52
00:03:47.200 --> 00:03:51.520
recovery shot. So this is a great drill or a great shot for you to practice. So

53
00:03:51.520 --> 00:03:51.600
I'm

54
00:03:51.600 --> 00:03:54.800
gonna play the ball a little bit more back in my stance, and then I'm just

55
00:03:54.800 --> 00:03:55.040
going

56
00:03:55.040 --> 00:04:00.920
to make sure that I get that club face closed to the path, and I'm gonna start

57
00:04:00.920 --> 00:04:04.480
with a little stronger grip to make it easier for that. So the club face is

58
00:04:04.480 --> 00:04:04.680
more

59
00:04:04.680 --> 00:04:12.620
turn to begin with, club's ball or ball is well back, and I'm gonna hit a

60
00:04:12.620 --> 00:04:13.120
really

61
00:04:13.120 --> 00:04:21.560
easy low sweeping draw. I could, when I'm working on refining this drill, I

62
00:04:21.560 --> 00:04:21.760
might

63
00:04:21.760 --> 00:04:26.480
hit a couple in each shot to try to either slightly vary the trajectory or

64
00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:31.640
slightly vary the amount of curve. Okay, now we're gonna go for some of the

65
00:04:31.640 --> 00:04:31.880
high

66
00:04:31.880 --> 00:04:37.640
ones. So for the high ones, I'm going to move the ball forward. The easiest one

67
00:04:37.640 --> 00:04:37.800
is

68
00:04:37.800 --> 00:04:41.320
going to be the high fade, which is almost more like a flop shot, where I'm

69
00:04:41.320 --> 00:04:46.720
going to stay behind it, hold the face just a touch more open, and really turn

70
00:04:46.720 --> 00:04:55.200
my body to help keep that club face open, and what I'll find is that's gonna

71
00:04:55.200 --> 00:05:03.520
tend to launch more right than I could plan for, but it will launch high. So by

72
00:05:03.520 --> 00:05:07.640
because it launches a little bit more right in my mind, I usually have to aim

73
00:05:07.640 --> 00:05:13.240
well left of where I think I'm aiming. So even if I think I'm aiming just a

74
00:05:13.240 --> 00:05:17.760
little left, I'm gonna almost double that in my head so that it starts closer

75
00:05:17.760 --> 00:05:17.840
to

76
00:05:17.840 --> 00:05:23.040
where I want, because if the club face is open and I'm swinging outside in, it

77
00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:23.320
's

78
00:05:23.320 --> 00:05:27.040
gonna launch right, curve right, and it's gonna launch high. So for practicing

79
00:05:27.040 --> 00:05:27.440
using

80
00:05:27.440 --> 00:05:31.200
this as usually a recovery shot, I have to make sure that I'm gonna have some

81
00:05:31.200 --> 00:05:36.440
clearance on the safe side, which is usually the left for my fade. Okay, now

82
00:05:36.440 --> 00:05:41.480
for the high draw, this is the tricky one for a lot of golfers, because you got

83
00:05:41.480 --> 00:05:41.560
to

84
00:05:41.560 --> 00:05:46.480
play the ball forward in order to get the launch up, but usually staying behind

85
00:05:46.480 --> 00:05:46.840
is

86
00:05:46.840 --> 00:05:53.480
going to cause you to swing a little bit more outside in. So I'm gonna stay

87
00:05:53.480 --> 00:05:58.440
behind, I'm gonna get some decent access tilt, but I'm gonna use a good white

88
00:05:58.440 --> 00:06:03.300
movement so that I don't hit behind it or hit it fat. So high draw, got to make

89
00:06:03.300 --> 00:06:11.560
sure that the club face gets a little bit more closed in order to draw it, and

90
00:06:11.560 --> 00:06:12.120
that

91
00:06:12.120 --> 00:06:15.960
was pretty much high straight. So if I'm playing you got to call your shot, I

92
00:06:15.960 --> 00:06:16.480
just

93
00:06:16.480 --> 00:06:21.240
got an X, because I didn't actually get its draw. It got the high, that was the

94
00:06:21.240 --> 00:06:24.240
high straight, so now I'm gonna make sure that the club face is more closed. I

95
00:06:24.240 --> 00:06:24.640
'm

96
00:06:24.640 --> 00:06:31.640
going to play the ball forward, close it just a bit, and I'm gonna, just for

97
00:06:31.640 --> 00:06:31.800
good

98
00:06:31.800 --> 00:06:39.560
measure, get my swing path a little bit more from the inside. So there's the

99
00:06:39.560 --> 00:06:39.720
high,

100
00:06:39.720 --> 00:06:45.520
well five to seven-yard draw. So you can use this drill for really refining

101
00:06:45.520 --> 00:06:45.640
your

102
00:06:45.640 --> 00:06:49.920
face to path. That will give you the skill set to be able to adjust your low

103
00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:53.800
point on shots where the ball slightly above your feet, slightly below your

104
00:06:53.800 --> 00:06:57.680
feet. You've got to curve it, it really helps you refine your face to path.

105
00:06:57.680 --> 00:06:58.160
This

106
00:06:58.160 --> 00:07:03.280
can be a great warm-up as well, because it induces a little bit of

107
00:07:03.280 --> 00:07:08.640
random practice, and it requires you to make small adjustments, and what you'll

108
00:07:08.640 --> 00:07:12.160
find out is day-to-day, there'll be certain shots that are great, and there

109
00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:15.600
will be certain shots that are challenging. If you do it as a warm-up, it'll

110
00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:21.000
help you know which should be your go-to shots on that given day.
