In this video, I walk you through the differences between professional golfers and amateurs during the release.

In this analysis video, we discuss what makes a quality release movement, and what are the signs that something critical is off. We will cover the movements of the body, and the arms, and how they work together to correctly and consistently deliver the club through impact to the follow-through position.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.960
In this analysis video, we're going to look at the release.

2
00:00:03.960 --> 00:00:08.480
Now, the release is basically what happens after transition and takes you all

3
00:00:08.480 --> 00:00:11.000
the way until the follow-through position.

4
00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:15.080
And we're going to discuss it from the arms perspective as well as from the

5
00:00:15.080 --> 00:00:16.500
body's perspective.

6
00:00:16.500 --> 00:00:20.500
But we'll start with the body, which is a simple mechanism.

7
00:00:20.500 --> 00:00:26.000
The body is just going to brace in order to transfer energy into the arms.

8
00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:28.000
Now, this isn't a conscious action.

9
00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:32.000
This isn't something that someone is going to be trying to do.

10
00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:37.000
But in order to create maximum speed in the hands, the body must be bracing.

11
00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:43.110
So, to clarify what I mean by bracing, the lower body is going to be pushing

12
00:00:43.110 --> 00:00:44.000
into the ground,

13
00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:48.520
so the legs and the pelvis are going to straighten and come up, and the upper

14
00:00:48.520 --> 00:00:52.000
body is going to go back and away from the target.

15
00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:56.140
Here, I'll show you a couple different golfers, and we'll take a look at what

16
00:00:56.140 --> 00:00:57.000
the body's doing.

17
00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:02.000
So, here's a line in this delivery position, and here's a line.

18
00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:05.000
You can see that he's roughly in a squat position with his body.

19
00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:07.000
His shoulders are roughly parallel to the golf ball.

20
00:01:07.000 --> 00:01:11.510
His pelvis is a little open, but side tilt-wise, roughly parallel to the golf

21
00:01:11.510 --> 00:01:12.000
ball.

22
00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:19.300
Now, as he goes to release, you will see if you look at his head compared to

23
00:01:19.300 --> 00:01:20.000
the tree.

24
00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:25.380
And some you'll see in the head, but the place where we measure is more, it's T

25
00:01:25.380 --> 00:01:30.000
3, which is kind of the center of the ribcage, but with a virtual center.

26
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:33.440
So, it's kind of the center of the ribcage. You could also look at the shirt

27
00:01:33.440 --> 00:01:39.080
buttons, but you'll see that upper body moving away from the target as the belt

28
00:01:39.080 --> 00:01:42.000
line increases or raises.

29
00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:46.080
So, you can see how I had this line right where the belt or the top of his pel

30
00:01:46.080 --> 00:01:50.000
vis was, and now the top of his pelvis has raised a couple inches.

31
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:54.080
Usually, it's two inches or so, nothing too dramatic, but the combination of

32
00:01:54.080 --> 00:01:59.640
those two movements, the upper body moving backward but not going up, and the

33
00:01:59.640 --> 00:02:04.950
lower body straightening or raising, helps to propel the arms into a straight

34
00:02:04.950 --> 00:02:10.000
ened position, which is a very, very big key to this follow-through position.

35
00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:19.210
And now we'll take a look at Justin Rose going through some of those same

36
00:02:19.210 --> 00:02:21.000
positions.

37
00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:26.550
So, as we go down, you'll see right between here and here, his upper body is

38
00:02:26.550 --> 00:02:32.480
actually moving backward, his pelvis, which was down at where this belt line is

39
00:02:32.480 --> 00:02:34.000
, as raised up.

40
00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:38.080
You could also look at the garbage bag in the back, because I believe the

41
00:02:38.080 --> 00:02:42.880
camera moves slightly, and you can see that in delivery position, the top of

42
00:02:42.880 --> 00:02:47.760
his belt line is roughly parallel with that garbage bag, and then into the

43
00:02:47.760 --> 00:02:50.820
follow-through position, you can see his belt is raised, because he's straight

44
00:02:50.820 --> 00:02:52.000
ened his legs.

45
00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:57.100
That's kind of the jump move that I talk about in the squat and jump, and he's

46
00:02:57.100 --> 00:03:02.400
getting into this arms extended and shaft kind of extended away from the chest,

47
00:03:02.400 --> 00:03:05.000
this very good extension position.

48
00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:11.000
This is one of the traits that I love to see in a good, healthy release.

49
00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:16.000
Now, let's take a look at a couple amateurs as they go through that same phase.

50
00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:21.170
So, I drew those same lines, and you can see that while the upper body moved

51
00:03:21.170 --> 00:03:25.060
back, his belt line barely raised, and when he gets into his finished position,

52
00:03:25.060 --> 00:03:31.000
he still has a lot of flex in his knees.

53
00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:36.380
He's lacking in that jump movement, which is going to basically mean that if he

54
00:03:36.380 --> 00:03:41.000
were to straighten his arms, he would probably hit the ball fat.

55
00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:45.610
So, what he ends up doing is pulling in with his arms, and you can see that

56
00:03:45.610 --> 00:03:50.960
instead of getting into those arm extended position, I'll raise some of these.

57
00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:55.060
Instead of getting into those arm extended position, you can see that there is

58
00:03:55.060 --> 00:04:00.690
a few angles going on in his arms as he is pulling the club in towards his

59
00:04:00.690 --> 00:04:04.000
chest to prevent it from hitting the ground.

60
00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:09.740
And here's one more amateur golfer demonstrating a belt line that doesn't raise

61
00:04:09.740 --> 00:04:15.250
or legs that don't necessarily push through the ground, and as a result,

62
00:04:15.250 --> 00:04:20.640
through the ball, he's going to have more of a shrugging type movement with his

63
00:04:20.640 --> 00:04:24.000
arms instead of a releasing type movement of his arms.

64
00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:28.230
Now, I largely think that what the body does is a result of what the hands are

65
00:04:28.230 --> 00:04:32.240
trying to do or what the arms are trying to do, so we'll spend a little bit

66
00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:36.230
more time looking at different ways that you can use your arms and hands

67
00:04:36.230 --> 00:04:38.000
through the release.

68
00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:42.130
In looking at the arms and hands, there are three things that we're going to

69
00:04:42.130 --> 00:04:46.410
look at, the movement of the left hand and arm, the movement of the right hand

70
00:04:46.410 --> 00:04:51.000
and forearm, and then the timing of when the right arm is going to straighten.

71
00:04:51.000 --> 00:04:55.270
So, let's look at them sort of together because it's hard to isolate exactly

72
00:04:55.270 --> 00:04:59.400
what one hand is doing versus the other because they're both so close in the

73
00:04:59.400 --> 00:05:00.000
grip.

74
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:05.420
So, here we have Rory in delivery position over here on the left, and you can

75
00:05:05.420 --> 00:05:10.000
see that his hands are pointed directly away from his chest.

76
00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:26.850
Now, I'll leave this one here. Now, if I were to take him through the release

77
00:05:26.850 --> 00:05:28.350
all the way until the end of that follow-through position, you can see that now

78
00:05:28.350 --> 00:05:29.920
the back of his left hand is pointed directly away from where the golf ball was

79
00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:30.000
.

80
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:35.180
So, it went from pointing towards the golf ball to away from the golf ball,

81
00:05:35.180 --> 00:05:38.000
which is a sign that it has supinated.

82
00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:42.080
So, now we can look at Justin Rose, and we can see it from the face-on view.

83
00:05:42.080 --> 00:05:46.000
You can see the back of his hand is clearly pointed straight out at us.

84
00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:56.510
I can't draw arrow directly at us, but you know what I mean? And then, as he

85
00:05:56.510 --> 00:05:59.000
goes into the follow-through position, the back of his right hand is now

86
00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:03.000
pointed directly at us, and the left hand is pointed directly away.

87
00:06:03.000 --> 00:06:09.240
Again, that is indicating that the left wrist has supinated, and the right

88
00:06:09.240 --> 00:06:14.000
wrist has pronated during the last phases of release.

89
00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:18.750
And here we have a couple more examples. We have Luke Donald here on the right,

90
00:06:18.750 --> 00:06:21.000
and you can see it close to delivery position.

91
00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:26.270
The back of that left wrist is pointed at the golf ball, and then as he goes

92
00:06:26.270 --> 00:06:32.280
through the release, you can really see those four arms rotating, and the back

93
00:06:32.280 --> 00:06:37.000
of the left hand pointing away from the golf ball.

94
00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:41.270
And now we can take a look at Phil Nicholson. So, here we have that delivery

95
00:06:41.270 --> 00:06:45.470
position, where the back of the right hand in his case is pointed at the golf

96
00:06:45.470 --> 00:06:54.330
ball, and then as he goes through, you will see his right wrist pointing away

97
00:06:54.330 --> 00:06:56.000
from the golf ball.

98
00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:00.080
Now, Phil has an interesting camera angle that demonstrates one of the

99
00:07:00.080 --> 00:07:04.120
principles that I discussed, which is that the lead hand controls a lot of the

100
00:07:04.120 --> 00:07:05.000
rotation.

101
00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:09.800
You can really see it with Phil and with BJ Singh, that in this position right

102
00:07:09.800 --> 00:07:14.550
here, there's actually a little bit of space between his left hand or trail

103
00:07:14.550 --> 00:07:19.930
hand and the grip hand, indicating that a lot of this movement, at least for

104
00:07:19.930 --> 00:07:25.000
Phil, is being controlled by his lead hand or right hand.

105
00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:30.210
And we'll do a couple more examples. So, here we have Jason Duffner over here

106
00:07:30.210 --> 00:07:37.000
on the left, and as he goes from this delivery position through his release,

107
00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:42.490
you can see his left hand now pointing away from the golf ball and actually

108
00:07:42.490 --> 00:07:44.000
pointing slightly towards the ground.

109
00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:48.870
That's one of the points that I failed to mention in the first couple, which

110
00:07:48.870 --> 00:07:53.640
would be, as you can see it rotating, you would see that right when he gets

111
00:07:53.640 --> 00:07:58.540
into this position, it would be pointing slightly at the ground behind him

112
00:07:58.540 --> 00:08:03.630
instead of having his left wrist pointing more up towards the sky, which we'll

113
00:08:03.630 --> 00:08:07.000
probably see when we look at a few amateurs.

114
00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:11.130
Now over on the right, we have Charlie Weigh, and here's what you would see

115
00:08:11.130 --> 00:08:15.000
from the face-on view for someone who is rotating their forearms.

116
00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:21.490
You will see that as he makes contact, and after he makes contact, we can see

117
00:08:21.490 --> 00:08:26.970
the inside of the left elbow, that's a clear indication that the shoulder or

118
00:08:26.970 --> 00:08:29.000
the left shoulder has rotated.

119
00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:35.510
In addition, when he gets into his full extended follow-through position, you

120
00:08:35.510 --> 00:08:42.000
can see the fingers of the left hand underneath the fingers of the right hand.

121
00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:47.660
So notice how you can see his glove hand by this waist position, and the club

122
00:08:47.660 --> 00:08:53.000
is in a great straight line position roughly with his right forearm.

123
00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:56.000
So there's a very small angle there.

124
00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:00.690
Now we'll take a look at a few amateurs to see what some of these differences

125
00:09:00.690 --> 00:09:02.000
might look like.

126
00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:07.950
Now, we'll look over here on the left, and we can see as we get into delivery

127
00:09:07.950 --> 00:09:11.830
position, the hands are pretty much facing the golf ball, but they're a little

128
00:09:11.830 --> 00:09:13.000
bit more behind his body.

129
00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:16.000
We'll get into that when we talk about the right elbow.

130
00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:21.520
Now, as he comes through, we want to see the inside of his elbow, and we want

131
00:09:21.520 --> 00:09:27.000
to see his left hand get underneath his right hand as those arms extend.

132
00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:31.860
And what you'll see is as he comes through on this swing, we never really see

133
00:09:31.860 --> 00:09:34.000
the inside of his elbow pit.

134
00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:40.850
We actually see the tip of his elbow right there, meaning that his arm has not

135
00:09:40.850 --> 00:09:42.000
rotated.

136
00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:47.520
The other thing we see is as we go here, we cannot see any of his fingers of

137
00:09:47.520 --> 00:09:51.000
the left hand underneath the right hand.

138
00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:55.410
There's a whole mechanism that's going on here, where instead of letting the

139
00:09:55.410 --> 00:10:01.000
arms extend and rotate, he's basically held off with that left arm.

140
00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:05.480
Now, the problem with this is all the stress is going to get absorbed into his

141
00:10:05.480 --> 00:10:09.950
shoulder and into his elbow and not get transferred down his body the way that

142
00:10:09.950 --> 00:10:12.000
the pros were demonstrating.

143
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:17.530
Now, let's take a look at this gentleman on the right, and you'll see that as

144
00:10:17.530 --> 00:10:21.700
he comes through, we're going to see a similar pattern with that left elbow

145
00:10:21.700 --> 00:10:24.000
where we can't really see the inside of it.

146
00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:29.200
Now, he does a good job of getting his arms to extend, but again, we do not see

147
00:10:29.200 --> 00:10:33.670
the continued rotation, and we do not see the fingers of his left hand

148
00:10:33.670 --> 00:10:40.000
underneath the grip until he finally lets them roll and rotate right there.

149
00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:43.000
That ideally should be happening.

150
00:10:43.000 --> 00:10:48.230
If you are going to have a downward angle attack with shaft lean, then this is

151
00:10:48.230 --> 00:10:53.000
probably going to happen through impact instead of after impact.

152
00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:55.000
Let's look at a couple more.

153
00:10:55.000 --> 00:11:00.390
On the left, we have a higher handicap female, and you can see that as she

154
00:11:00.390 --> 00:11:04.640
comes down through, there's not going to be a lot of rotation, and there's not

155
00:11:04.640 --> 00:11:06.000
going to be a lot of extension.

156
00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:09.350
Just as we talked about in the follow-through position, you're going to see

157
00:11:09.350 --> 00:11:13.560
those elbows getting wider further apart from each other, and we're not going

158
00:11:13.560 --> 00:11:19.000
to see the left hand underneath the right hand ever in this golf swing.

159
00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:23.640
There's not a lot of rotation going on, but that's partially because of where

160
00:11:23.640 --> 00:11:28.000
the club is coming from, which we'll talk about in the next section.

161
00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:35.060
Now, over here on the right, we'll see a pretty good golfer, and he's a pretty

162
00:11:35.060 --> 00:11:38.000
good golfer, so you'll see some of this rotation.

163
00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:43.130
You can see how we can see the fingers of the left hand underneath, so he has

164
00:11:43.130 --> 00:11:45.000
pretty good rotation.

165
00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:50.000
The thing that I'd like to highlight that you may or may not have picked up on

166
00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:54.980
is as he comes through, if I draw a line straight out from that club shaft,

167
00:11:54.980 --> 00:12:01.610
most of the torporos had that club or the club shaft following that line until

168
00:12:01.610 --> 00:12:04.000
his hands were about parallel or hip height.

169
00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:10.490
You can see that he has done more of a wrist hinge through his release instead

170
00:12:10.490 --> 00:12:14.000
of letting those arms just extend out.

171
00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:20.000
Now, let's talk about the right or the trail elbow and when it extends.

172
00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:23.580
In the transition section, we talked about how the elbow is going to work in

173
00:12:23.580 --> 00:12:26.000
front of the body or towards the belly button.

174
00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:30.080
All I want you to do is watch as Dustin Johnson goes down, and I want you to

175
00:12:30.080 --> 00:12:33.890
see when his right elbow starts to come away from his side or starts to

176
00:12:33.890 --> 00:12:35.000
straighten.

177
00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:40.400
You can see that it doesn't really start to leave until right there, and now if

178
00:12:40.400 --> 00:12:44.920
you look at where the clubhead is compared to the golf ball, that's very, very

179
00:12:44.920 --> 00:12:47.000
late in the swing.

180
00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:53.210
Now, we'll look at Bubba going through the same face or the same pattern, so

181
00:12:53.210 --> 00:12:58.970
you'll see that elbow staying close to his side, and then it starts to straight

182
00:12:58.970 --> 00:13:01.000
en kind of right down in this area.

183
00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:05.860
It's slowly straightening before that, but this is when it really starts to

184
00:13:05.860 --> 00:13:08.000
pick up straightening speed.

185
00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:12.840
Now, we'll look at a couple more to show you how the elbow straightening and

186
00:13:12.840 --> 00:13:17.480
the timing of when it straightens tends to be more exaggerated, where it

187
00:13:17.480 --> 00:13:20.000
happens earlier with an iron than it tends to with a driver.

188
00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:24.410
So, here we have Paul Casey on the right, and I want you to watch this right

189
00:13:24.410 --> 00:13:28.900
elbow, and it doesn't start to straighten until right there, which is actually

190
00:13:28.900 --> 00:13:33.000
one frame before he, or two frames before he makes contact with the golf ball.

191
00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:37.260
So, it's pretty much his body, his bring, has brought his arms and hands into

192
00:13:37.260 --> 00:13:41.740
position, and all the arms and hands have done is square the clubface with that

193
00:13:41.740 --> 00:13:47.000
motorcycle movement and organize the shaft plane with that flattening movement.

194
00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:51.140
And then once he gets to impact, he's going to extend his arms to transfer all

195
00:13:51.140 --> 00:13:53.000
that energy very effectively.

196
00:13:53.000 --> 00:13:57.920
Now, here's Luke Donald hitting an iron, and it actually looks like it's fairly

197
00:13:57.920 --> 00:14:02.770
lofted iron, possibly a wedge, and now if you watch when his right elbow starts

198
00:14:02.770 --> 00:14:07.060
to straighten, you'll see it kind of starts to straighten in this area here,

199
00:14:07.060 --> 00:14:14.000
which is much earlier than we were seeing with the longer clubs.

200
00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:18.310
And to strengthen that point, let's look at Rory McElroy with two different

201
00:14:18.310 --> 00:14:22.690
clubs. So, here he's got a longer club, looks like about a three wood, and

202
00:14:22.690 --> 00:14:26.860
watch that right elbow, and when it comes off that side, you'll see it stays

203
00:14:26.860 --> 00:14:29.000
there pretty much right until about there.

204
00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:35.210
So, again, just one or two frames right before impact, and then over here on

205
00:14:35.210 --> 00:14:41.010
the right, he appears to have some sort of wedge, and you'll see that that

206
00:14:41.010 --> 00:14:47.110
right arm starts to straighten kind of right in here, which is much earlier

207
00:14:47.110 --> 00:14:50.000
than it was with the longer club.

208
00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:55.170
Now, let's look at that right arm straightening from the face-on position, or

209
00:14:55.170 --> 00:14:59.980
face-on orientation. So, if we were to come down, we know that his right arm

210
00:14:59.980 --> 00:15:04.380
was starting to leave his side and starting to straighten right in here, a few

211
00:15:04.380 --> 00:15:06.000
frames before impact.

212
00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:10.700
So, what you'll see is that his hands are almost, even with the ball, and with

213
00:15:10.700 --> 00:15:15.170
irons, they'll frequently be ahead of the golf ball when that right arm is

214
00:15:15.170 --> 00:15:17.000
starting to straighten.

215
00:15:17.000 --> 00:15:21.750
And that's usually one of the optical illusions that you'll have to get used to

216
00:15:21.750 --> 00:15:25.840
, which most amateurs, when I get them in that position, that the hands are

217
00:15:25.840 --> 00:15:30.670
ahead of the golf ball, yet the elbow is still bent and the wrists are still

218
00:15:30.670 --> 00:15:31.000
loaded.

219
00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:35.120
They pretty much say, "I'm going to miss. I've got no chance of hitting the

220
00:15:35.120 --> 00:15:39.230
golf ball." And that's an optical illusion that you have to get over if you

221
00:15:39.230 --> 00:15:41.000
want to become a consistent ball striker.

222
00:15:41.000 --> 00:16:03.040
Now, let's look at Zach Johnson going through that same phase. So, his right

223
00:16:03.040 --> 00:16:03.210
arm is going to be straightening kind of in this area right about in here. But

224
00:16:03.210 --> 00:16:03.380
one of the things that you'll see as he goes through there is you'll see no gap

225
00:16:03.380 --> 00:16:03.570
between his right arm and side, or you can see the gap in there, and it'll

226
00:16:03.570 --> 00:16:08.410
disappear very quickly as that elbow works across his body and in front of his

227
00:16:08.410 --> 00:16:09.000
hip.

228
00:16:09.000 --> 00:16:13.800
Here we'll go down and you can see no gap whatsoever, and then as he keeps

229
00:16:13.800 --> 00:16:19.000
going through, now the arms are straightening and extending through there.

230
00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:23.670
And now let's compare the timing and location of the right arm straightening

231
00:16:23.670 --> 00:16:28.480
for a few amateurs. So, first over here on the left, as we come down, you can

232
00:16:28.480 --> 00:16:33.270
start to see that right arm straightening at the very latest between these two

233
00:16:33.270 --> 00:16:37.400
frames, that right elbow is already starting to straighten, which is much

234
00:16:37.400 --> 00:16:42.480
easier, or much earlier than we were seeing even with Roy McElroyer, who lived

235
00:16:42.480 --> 00:16:44.000
on all with their sandwich.

236
00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:48.620
And this is a tee shot on a lengthy hole, so ideally he will be doing other

237
00:16:48.620 --> 00:16:52.000
things than straightening that arm that soon.

238
00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:56.610
Over here on the right, we have Charles Barkley, who we know has one of the

239
00:16:56.610 --> 00:17:01.000
steepest golf swings on the planet, and we can start to see that right arm

240
00:17:01.000 --> 00:17:06.330
straightening in a very similar position to where we saw this amateur on the

241
00:17:06.330 --> 00:17:07.000
left.

242
00:17:07.000 --> 00:17:13.490
And again, Charles is using a driver, and that's not going to work having that

243
00:17:13.490 --> 00:17:17.000
arm straightening that much that soon.

244
00:17:17.000 --> 00:17:21.480
Now let's look at a couple amateurs from the face-on position, and you can see

245
00:17:21.480 --> 00:17:26.310
the timing of when that arm straightens, and look for that space that we saw,

246
00:17:26.310 --> 00:17:30.000
or the lack of space that we saw with the professions.

247
00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:37.100
So here you can see a pretty big gap between the right arm and the body right

248
00:17:37.100 --> 00:17:42.760
there, and you can see how, if I were to draw a line from the body, essentially

249
00:17:42.760 --> 00:17:47.000
that right elbow is behind the body instead of in front of his belly button.

250
00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:50.520
Now if you were to get his hands in front of his belly button, without making

251
00:17:50.520 --> 00:17:54.390
other adjustments, what he's doing with his wrist, he would probably shank the

252
00:17:54.390 --> 00:17:55.000
ball.

253
00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:58.340
So it makes sense that he's doing this, but if he wants to become a consistent

254
00:17:58.340 --> 00:18:01.930
ball striker, like the other examples we saw, this would be something he would

255
00:18:01.930 --> 00:18:03.000
have to work on.

256
00:18:03.000 --> 00:18:08.400
You can also see the timing of that right arm straightening, which is way back

257
00:18:08.400 --> 00:18:14.060
here, already starting to straighten, that's just not going to work for having

258
00:18:14.060 --> 00:18:16.000
a downward, consistent strike.

259
00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:21.170
We look over here on the left, we'll see a fairly good golfer, he's kind of a

260
00:18:21.170 --> 00:18:27.000
mid-level handicap, and you'll see the right arm straightening early there.

261
00:18:27.000 --> 00:18:31.470
You won't see a huge gap between his elbow and his belly button, but you will

262
00:18:31.470 --> 00:18:34.000
see a little bit of a gap right in here.

263
00:18:34.000 --> 00:18:39.690
You can see that there's definitely some disconnected space between his body

264
00:18:39.690 --> 00:18:44.260
and his elbow. Another way that you can see that is the club is approaching the

265
00:18:44.260 --> 00:18:49.380
ground pretty quickly already, and his hands are not even approaching near the

266
00:18:49.380 --> 00:18:50.000
golf ball.

267
00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:55.030
If you remember when we looked at some of the other pros, they were straight

268
00:18:55.030 --> 00:19:00.130
ening that arm once the hands or the handle was even or past the golf ball, so

269
00:19:00.130 --> 00:19:05.000
he's doing it much earlier, and this would help square the club face.

270
00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:11.360
Many amateurs will release the club back in this area because they don't know

271
00:19:11.360 --> 00:19:17.410
how to allow the motorcycle move to happen and the wrist to square the club

272
00:19:17.410 --> 00:19:19.000
face on its own.

273
00:19:19.000 --> 00:19:23.080
Now, I know that that was a lot, but I want you to remember that the purpose of

274
00:19:23.080 --> 00:19:27.110
these videos is to help you understand so that you can start visualizing this,

275
00:19:27.110 --> 00:19:30.970
not when you're swinging the club and hitting the golf ball, because you don't

276
00:19:30.970 --> 00:19:33.000
have enough time to think of all these things.

277
00:19:33.000 --> 00:19:37.200
The time when you should be focusing on this is when you're doing the slow

278
00:19:37.200 --> 00:19:41.820
motion drills or when you're doing the isolation drills, so that you can train

279
00:19:41.820 --> 00:19:44.000
these movements to be automatic.

280
00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:48.920
So, our goal with, say, the single arm release drills is to get a free-flowing

281
00:19:48.920 --> 00:19:53.730
movement of the wrist the way the tiger is demonstrating right here, and just

282
00:19:53.730 --> 00:19:56.000
let the golf ball get in the way.

283
00:19:56.000 --> 00:20:00.080
If you're used to not using your wrist properly, this is going to take a lot of

284
00:20:00.080 --> 00:20:03.770
thought at first, but with practice and with the proper drills and the focus

285
00:20:03.770 --> 00:20:09.000
during these drills, I know that just like my students, you can learn how to

286
00:20:09.000 --> 00:20:09.000
have

287
00:20:09.000 --> 00:20:18.760
an efficient release that comes from a great transition that leads to very

288
00:20:18.760 --> 00:20:22.000
solid ball striking.
