Use an impact bag to troubleshoot a flip/chicken-wing & fine-tune your release.

An impact bag can be a great tool for players to better understand how they are moving in space. For this drill, I will place the impact bag outside of the lead foot and ask players to:

  1. Brush the ground.
  2. Strike the low side of the impact bag.
  3. Keep the hands and clubhead in line (or vertical).

These (3) checkpoints will require players to properly tie together the pivot and sequencing of the arms. Players who struggle with accomplishing this may have more of a "flip" or "chicken-wing" style release. If you fall into this category, re-visiting drills such as the "grip throws" or "merry-go-round" can be a good place to start.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:06.160
This drill is impact bag outside of lead foot. So I'm not a huge fan of using

2
00:00:06.160 --> 00:00:06.360
the

3
00:00:06.360 --> 00:00:10.560
impact bag in the traditional way of kind of putting it there and just kind of

4
00:00:10.560 --> 00:00:15.460
smacking it for the sake of of feeling some shaft lean. But I do like to use it

5
00:00:15.460 --> 00:00:19.080
to stop the club to help your brain figure out what you might be doing in

6
00:00:19.080 --> 00:00:26.250
space. So well my impact bag has seen better days. We're going to use an object

7
00:00:26.250 --> 00:00:26.440
.

8
00:00:26.440 --> 00:00:31.750
You could use a pillow. I'm going to use the impact bag to help uncover what

9
00:00:31.750 --> 00:00:31.760
might

10
00:00:31.760 --> 00:00:36.860
be going on down at impact. So I'm going to do this off grass, but you can do

11
00:00:36.860 --> 00:00:37.000
this

12
00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:41.640
on carpet. You can do this off mats. You can do this striking a ball or not

13
00:00:41.640 --> 00:00:47.680
striking a ball. I'm going to kind of identify where ball position would be. So

14
00:00:47.680 --> 00:00:52.480
somewhere right around here. And then I'm going to try to brush the ground

15
00:00:52.480 --> 00:00:58.520
roughly where that ball position would be. And then I'm going to try and strike

16
00:00:58.520 --> 00:01:03.760
the impact bag that is just outside my left foot. And my goal is to have my

17
00:01:03.760 --> 00:01:09.160
hands and the club head in line. So basically vertical. This is to help with

18
00:01:09.160 --> 00:01:12.870
golfers who have a tendency of getting low to high. You would say I would hit

19
00:01:12.870 --> 00:01:13.000
it

20
00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:17.280
very high up on the impact bag. And my hands would be well behind where the

21
00:01:17.280 --> 00:01:17.480
club

22
00:01:17.480 --> 00:01:23.240
is at that point after impact. The other option would be golfers who have a

23
00:01:23.240 --> 00:01:28.400
little bit more of a scoop and chicken wing. I would hit it high on the impact

24
00:01:28.400 --> 00:01:33.110
bag. I might not even hit the ground and my hands would definitely behind. So

25
00:01:33.110 --> 00:01:33.520
in

26
00:01:33.520 --> 00:01:39.520
order to accomplish the two goals of or actually the three goals, brushing the

27
00:01:39.520 --> 00:01:45.430
ground, striking it low on the impact bag with my hands even with the club head

28
00:01:45.430 --> 00:01:45.520
.

29
00:01:45.520 --> 00:01:51.800
I have to do a decent job of getting my hands in front. Maintaining that leg.

30
00:01:51.800 --> 00:01:56.360
Keeping my chest in a good merry-go-round position or getting my body into a

31
00:01:56.360 --> 00:01:56.640
good

32
00:01:56.640 --> 00:02:00.480
impact position. It kind of ties together a few things relating to both the

33
00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:00.760
pivot

34
00:02:00.760 --> 00:02:07.000
and the sequencing of the arms. For me, in order to do this correctly, it feels

35
00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:12.240
like I'm throwing my arms out in that direction such as the grip throws or or

36
00:02:12.240 --> 00:02:18.520
the single arm throws or any of those drills. But for you, by doing this, you

37
00:02:18.520 --> 00:02:18.760
may

38
00:02:18.760 --> 00:02:23.350
develop your own unique feel. All that's important is that you take that feel

39
00:02:23.350 --> 00:02:23.600
and

40
00:02:23.600 --> 00:02:28.000
then we're going to try to apply it with a golf ball. So first, I'm going to do

41
00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:28.200
the

42
00:02:28.200 --> 00:02:33.240
trickier version which is just kind of a tap drill. I'm going to try and strike

43
00:02:33.240 --> 00:02:38.070
the ground and just tap the impact bag like I was doing right there. The goal

44
00:02:38.070 --> 00:02:38.280
on

45
00:02:38.280 --> 00:02:43.590
this is not to make the impact bag topple over and make it go flying. If

46
00:02:43.590 --> 00:02:43.940
anything,

47
00:02:43.940 --> 00:02:52.160
I'm almost kind of decelerating into impact because of the limited amount of

48
00:02:52.160 --> 00:02:56.840
grip pressure. So basically, I don't want to feel like I'm really squeezing my

49
00:02:56.840 --> 00:03:00.600
my arms and tensing my shoulders. I'm going to feel more like they're getting

50
00:03:00.600 --> 00:03:05.240
pulled away by the weight of the club. And in order to do that, I'm going to be

51
00:03:05.240 --> 00:03:10.680
able to, I'm not using my body for the bracing and the power transfer the way

52
00:03:10.680 --> 00:03:15.320
that I would normally. So the club is actually going to be moving fairly slow

53
00:03:15.320 --> 00:03:23.080
when it strikes the impact bag. So now, again, I'm going to try and brush the

54
00:03:23.080 --> 00:03:29.720
ground and strike the impact bag low towards the bottom of the impact bag with

55
00:03:29.720 --> 00:03:36.560
my hands relatively even with the hand with the club head when I make contact.

56
00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:40.560
Once I have a feeling of that, I'm a big fan of baby steps. So now I'm just

57
00:03:40.560 --> 00:03:44.960
going to move the impact bag so that I won't make contact with it. And then I'm

58
00:03:44.960 --> 00:03:51.800
going to try and basically duplicate that same feel. Once I have a few of these

59
00:03:51.800 --> 00:03:56.720
little baby step drills, then I can move up into a little bit bigger. So then I

60
00:03:56.720 --> 00:04:02.760
might be able to move into more of a continuous nine to three. And then once

61
00:04:02.760 --> 00:04:07.600
I feel like I've accomplished the goal with my nine to three, I'm going to move

62
00:04:07.600 --> 00:04:15.040
up to my 10 to two and into full swings. And now, when I start to do it with a

63
00:04:15.040 --> 00:04:18.460
little bit more speed and body, I'm going to start to hit the ground hard

64
00:04:18.460 --> 00:04:18.600
enough

65
00:04:18.600 --> 00:04:23.040
that I probably take a divot where in the slow motion swings, it's very it's

66
00:04:23.040 --> 00:04:27.080
unlikely, even if I'm having a leading edge strike, unless the ground is really

67
00:04:27.080 --> 00:04:31.920
soft, I'm probably not going to take a divot. So this is great for golfers who

68
00:04:31.920 --> 00:04:35.840
have more of a scoop early release. And you struggle with more of the club head

69
00:04:35.840 --> 00:04:40.120
going low to high or bottoming out behind the golf ball. So if you have

70
00:04:40.120 --> 00:04:43.320
trouble taking divots or you're more of a picker of a golf ball, this is a

71
00:04:43.320 --> 00:04:43.640
great

72
00:04:43.640 --> 00:04:49.320
way to get a sense of the handle getting ahead of the club head down

73
00:04:49.320 --> 00:04:53.400
through impact. One of the key skills for striking the ball in the center of

74
00:04:53.400 --> 00:04:53.440
the

75
00:04:53.440 --> 00:04:58.000
club from having good sequencing, good body position and good shaft lean.
