A fun way to understand and explore your low point skills.

The three skills to playing your best golf are:

  1. Creating speed
  2. Controlling the path of the club
  3. Organizing the face-to-path relationship

A key component to controlling the path is controlling low point. Low point can be looked at as when the club strikes the ground. This isn't alway the widest point of the swing arc, but for wedge shots those two are often the same.

This drill can be used to work on the skill of fat/thin contact as well as heel/toe contact.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.520
This drill is playing around with low point.

2
00:00:03.520 --> 00:00:08.480
Low point control is one of the key skills for making really solid contact.

3
00:00:08.480 --> 00:00:13.600
You frequently see golfers or tour golfers at the US Open, the British Open,

4
00:00:13.600 --> 00:00:14.140
where the

5
00:00:14.140 --> 00:00:18.440
grass is really bare and they tend to be on a little bit more slopes.

6
00:00:18.440 --> 00:00:22.330
You see them take a number of practice swings, just kind of feeling how the

7
00:00:22.330 --> 00:00:23.120
club is going

8
00:00:23.120 --> 00:00:24.400
to hit the ground.

9
00:00:24.400 --> 00:00:28.850
I find that many amateurs are avoiding trying to hit the ground, where most

10
00:00:28.850 --> 00:00:29.720
good golfers

11
00:00:29.720 --> 00:00:33.560
are trying to hit the ground and they're trying to hit the ground in a specific

12
00:00:33.560 --> 00:00:34.000
spot.

13
00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:38.280
Now, what you do with your swing, how much you bump your hips or keep your

14
00:00:38.280 --> 00:00:39.320
posture or

15
00:00:39.320 --> 00:00:45.260
use the wipe or the motorcycle, that all influences both how you create speed

16
00:00:45.260 --> 00:00:45.800
or how

17
00:00:45.800 --> 00:00:49.910
you create speed, how you control the face-to-path relationship as well as the

18
00:00:49.910 --> 00:00:50.440
path.

19
00:00:50.440 --> 00:00:53.360
Low point control is one of the parameters of the path.

20
00:00:53.360 --> 00:00:57.400
So I'll bring the camera in and we'll take a closer look, but I've pretty much

21
00:00:57.400 --> 00:00:58.120
just drawn

22
00:00:58.120 --> 00:01:00.400
a box with the spray paint.

23
00:01:00.400 --> 00:01:06.880
What I normally do for students is I'll have them get in their setup posture

24
00:01:06.880 --> 00:01:07.760
and then I'll

25
00:01:07.760 --> 00:01:11.480
take a T and I'll place lines in the ground.

26
00:01:11.480 --> 00:01:16.360
I'll just kind of drag and create lines so that they can see it.

27
00:01:16.360 --> 00:01:22.760
Roughly, let's say about eight inches to a foot on both sides of the golf ball.

28
00:01:22.760 --> 00:01:26.960
So about four inches, four to six inches on one side versus the other.

29
00:01:26.960 --> 00:01:31.750
And then what I'll ask them to do is I'll ask them to take practice wings and

30
00:01:31.750 --> 00:01:32.320
just kind

31
00:01:32.320 --> 00:01:36.500
of see where the club hits the ground.

32
00:01:36.500 --> 00:01:38.800
Then here's where the drill comes in.

33
00:01:38.800 --> 00:01:43.340
The challenge is I'm going to ask you to move it with one of two different ways

34
00:01:43.340 --> 00:01:43.640
.

35
00:01:43.640 --> 00:01:49.800
You can either move it forward or backward using your arms or your body.

36
00:01:49.800 --> 00:01:53.350
If you're doing the arms, I want you to try to keep your body movements the

37
00:01:53.350 --> 00:01:53.800
same.

38
00:01:53.800 --> 00:02:01.040
So I can move, here I'm making contact, I can keep pretty much the same body

39
00:02:01.040 --> 00:02:02.300
movements.

40
00:02:02.300 --> 00:02:07.430
And just by changing my arms, I can move the low point from well back by my

41
00:02:07.430 --> 00:02:08.280
right foot to

42
00:02:08.280 --> 00:02:12.080
well out in front of my left foot.

43
00:02:12.080 --> 00:02:16.750
Then if I want, I can challenge myself to move the low point around keeping the

44
00:02:16.750 --> 00:02:17.320
same arm

45
00:02:17.320 --> 00:02:20.480
movement and just adjusting the body.

46
00:02:20.480 --> 00:02:27.090
So now I'm going to make basically that release and I'm going to try to shift a

47
00:02:27.090 --> 00:02:28.120
little bit

48
00:02:28.120 --> 00:02:34.860
more so I can hit the ground back there or early extend or I can spin.

49
00:02:34.860 --> 00:02:38.580
But now I get the low point or the path getting a little bit too much to the

50
00:02:38.580 --> 00:02:39.120
left.

51
00:02:39.120 --> 00:02:44.120
But it's a great way to kind of play around with low point.

52
00:02:44.120 --> 00:02:49.580
If you struggle with heel toe contact, so shanks or lots of toe shanks, toe

53
00:02:49.580 --> 00:02:50.280
shots, then

54
00:02:50.280 --> 00:02:54.950
I would also want you to play around with how can you move the low point away

55
00:02:54.950 --> 00:02:56.160
or towards.

56
00:02:56.160 --> 00:03:00.800
And so that way you'd want to put lines going towards the target parallel lines

57
00:03:00.800 --> 00:03:01.400
towards

58
00:03:01.400 --> 00:03:06.560
the target so that you can see where you're making contact.

59
00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:11.470
And then what I'll find is, okay, I might be releasing like that and it's going

60
00:03:11.470 --> 00:03:11.760
out

61
00:03:11.760 --> 00:03:17.190
a bit and now I bend more forward, keeping the same release, it starts to move

62
00:03:17.190 --> 00:03:17.560
more

63
00:03:17.560 --> 00:03:22.980
back towards me, or I might find if I lead more with my body, it brings it back

64
00:03:22.980 --> 00:03:23.600
towards

65
00:03:23.600 --> 00:03:24.600
me.

66
00:03:24.600 --> 00:03:29.010
If I really go early with my arms, it gets, you know, a good four inches out

67
00:03:29.010 --> 00:03:29.640
that way.

68
00:03:29.640 --> 00:03:33.680
So I might find that I can control and move around that low point doing

69
00:03:33.680 --> 00:03:34.520
different arm

70
00:03:34.520 --> 00:03:36.920
movements, doing different body movements.

71
00:03:36.920 --> 00:03:40.760
The big body movements that are going to help you move the low point are either

72
00:03:40.760 --> 00:03:40.960
the

73
00:03:40.960 --> 00:03:45.120
Jackson five, so getting a little bit of pressure shift into that front foot.

74
00:03:45.120 --> 00:03:51.340
The merry go around getting more flexion and body turn, or potentially a little

75
00:03:51.340 --> 00:03:52.360
bit more

76
00:03:52.360 --> 00:03:54.120
of the side bend.

77
00:03:54.120 --> 00:03:57.770
And this is a great way to confirm if you are getting side bend while going

78
00:03:57.770 --> 00:03:58.680
into extension

79
00:03:58.680 --> 00:04:01.240
because that will move the low point way back.

80
00:04:01.240 --> 00:04:05.450
Or if you're getting side bend while going into flexion rotation, that will

81
00:04:05.450 --> 00:04:06.000
move the

82
00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:08.360
bottom of the swing forward.

83
00:04:08.360 --> 00:04:13.760
So you'll see if I side bend, but then rotate that hit the ground there.

84
00:04:13.760 --> 00:04:18.080
If I side bend, but then extend, that hit the ground way back here.

85
00:04:18.080 --> 00:04:22.760
So if you want to work on your low point skill, trying to do it perfectly every

86
00:04:22.760 --> 00:04:23.280
time is the

87
00:04:23.280 --> 00:04:25.400
worst way to work on a skill.

88
00:04:25.400 --> 00:04:28.950
I've talked about the Goldilocks drills and trying to do too much one way, too

89
00:04:28.950 --> 00:04:29.140
much the

90
00:04:29.140 --> 00:04:30.880
other way, and then finding the middle.

91
00:04:30.880 --> 00:04:36.040
This is a great way for you to practice that skill working on low point.

92
00:04:36.040 --> 00:04:40.080
So now you can see from kind of the overhead view, I'm just going to move the

93
00:04:40.080 --> 00:04:40.880
ball towards

94
00:04:40.880 --> 00:04:45.240
the front of that so that you can see roughly there's where my ball position

95
00:04:45.240 --> 00:04:46.040
would be.

96
00:04:46.040 --> 00:04:50.740
And now here's just kind of setting a baseline, trying to brush the ground

97
00:04:50.740 --> 00:04:51.960
right about where

98
00:04:51.960 --> 00:04:53.280
the ball is.

99
00:04:53.280 --> 00:04:57.140
Now I'm going to do body stays the same, and I'm going to change it with my

100
00:04:57.140 --> 00:04:57.680
arms.

101
00:04:57.680 --> 00:05:02.810
And so you'll see I can, there's a little bit more outside in, there's a little

102
00:05:02.810 --> 00:05:05.120
bit more

103
00:05:05.120 --> 00:05:09.880
movement, I can really move it forward with that white movement without getting

104
00:05:09.880 --> 00:05:10.440
too much

105
00:05:10.440 --> 00:05:13.640
out, the path getting too much outside in.

106
00:05:13.640 --> 00:05:19.380
Or if I cast, I can really move that low point backward.

107
00:05:19.380 --> 00:05:24.800
Now I'm going to try and keep the same release, so we're going to get that

108
00:05:24.800 --> 00:05:26.040
release going,

109
00:05:26.040 --> 00:05:33.210
and I'm going to use my body rotation to move that forward and use some early

110
00:05:33.210 --> 00:05:34.360
extension

111
00:05:34.360 --> 00:05:35.360
to move that backward.

112
00:05:35.360 --> 00:05:40.920
I'm going to flex a little bit more to move that forward in steeper.

113
00:05:40.920 --> 00:05:48.620
I'm going to cover the ball, but stay a little bit more back so I can just play

114
00:05:48.620 --> 00:05:49.580
around with

115
00:05:49.580 --> 00:05:54.400
different options and try and control where that's hitting the ground.

116
00:05:54.400 --> 00:05:59.820
You can put tees in the ground as different objects, or you can just do it spat

117
00:05:59.820 --> 00:06:00.480
ially.

118
00:06:00.480 --> 00:06:04.080
Now I'm going to try to move it forward backward.

119
00:06:04.080 --> 00:06:09.460
So I'm going to set my baseline of just hitting the ground, kind of like that.

120
00:06:09.460 --> 00:06:13.770
Now I'm going to flex more forward and turn, and you see that moves the bottom

121
00:06:13.770 --> 00:06:14.460
of the swing

122
00:06:14.460 --> 00:06:15.960
closer to me.

123
00:06:15.960 --> 00:06:21.720
Now if I early extend and early release that right arm, it moves it backward

124
00:06:21.720 --> 00:06:22.720
and further

125
00:06:22.720 --> 00:06:24.160
away from me.

126
00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:29.810
So now I can control where that bottom of the swing is hitting, and then

127
00:06:29.810 --> 00:06:30.880
ultimately do

128
00:06:30.880 --> 00:06:34.360
it with some golf balls.

129
00:06:34.360 --> 00:06:43.240
So here I've got set up, there I've got the low point just ahead.

130
00:06:43.240 --> 00:06:47.280
Now I'm going to challenge myself, same stance.

131
00:06:47.280 --> 00:06:55.210
I'm going to set up here and I'm going to try to use the wipe and staying down

132
00:06:55.210 --> 00:06:55.560
so you

133
00:06:55.560 --> 00:07:01.440
can see I just got the grass, and now same stance.

134
00:07:01.440 --> 00:07:07.660
If I found that I was really bottoming out here, I'm going to try and control

135
00:07:07.660 --> 00:07:08.040
low point

136
00:07:08.040 --> 00:07:11.600
with a little bit more early extension, now it gives me a little bit more hook.
