3 Tee Driver Drill

Course Progress
One of the keys for driving consistency is related to the height of the club from the ground. For the best players in the world, the club will be delivered at a very shallow angle and will remain at roughly the same height even after impact. This noticeable "flat-spot" is a major contributor to driving accuracy and consistency. On the other hand, players who have a shorter "flat-spot", or a club that enters and exits the hitting area with a dramatic change in height, will tend to struggle off the tee.
If you fall into the latter category, this is a great drill for feeling the body and arm movements required to create a longer "flat-spot". If you struggle at first though, be sure to focus on making just a few 9-to-3 rehearsal swings. If this is still difficult, try to pay extra attention to your pivot and axis-tilt. Of course, as you progress, be sure to add more speed and a longer backswing.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.920
This driver drill video is brush all three tees so what we're gonna work on
2
00:00:04.920 --> 00:00:10.160
here is a concept that I refer to as the club height to the ground. Many golf
3
00:00:10.160 --> 00:00:10.640
ers
4
00:00:10.640 --> 00:00:15.000
who struggle with the driver don't have the club low to the ground for a long
5
00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:19.720
enough period of time to have any level of consistency. They either have the
6
00:00:19.720 --> 00:00:19.960
club
7
00:00:19.960 --> 00:00:23.480
low to the ground coming into the ball and then come up very quickly through
8
00:00:23.480 --> 00:00:28.640
the ball mostly with a flip or chicken wing breakdown in the release or they
9
00:00:28.640 --> 00:00:33.120
have the club high to the ground coming into the golf ball and then have it
10
00:00:33.120 --> 00:00:33.360
come
11
00:00:33.360 --> 00:00:38.640
up on the way through mostly because of upper body lunge or lack of axis tilt
12
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:43.160
or a little bit more of a upper body spin and lack of arm shallow. So this
13
00:00:43.160 --> 00:00:43.460
drill
14
00:00:43.460 --> 00:00:48.640
video kind of combos working on both of those aspects. So what we're gonna do
15
00:00:48.640 --> 00:00:48.880
is
16
00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:54.280
we're gonna take two tees and we're gonna put them in the ground about six
17
00:00:54.280 --> 00:00:59.120
inches in front and about six inches behind the golf ball. So they're at about
18
00:00:59.120 --> 00:01:05.280
the height of the golf ball. Now I'm gonna set up to the middle tee or just
19
00:01:05.280 --> 00:01:10.600
inside of it and my goal is to practice making practice wings where the club
20
00:01:10.600 --> 00:01:16.000
feels like it stays to the same level to the ground or the same height all the
21
00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.880
way from about right foot through to left foot. So a little bit even wider than
22
00:01:20.880 --> 00:01:25.440
the tees. Now one of the traits that I see with good drivers of the golf ball
23
00:01:25.440 --> 00:01:25.600
is
24
00:01:25.600 --> 00:01:30.160
they tend to use more of their body for the power of the swing. That puts them
25
00:01:30.160 --> 00:01:30.280
in
26
00:01:30.280 --> 00:01:34.280
a position where they can get the club low to the ground before the arms really
27
00:01:34.280 --> 00:01:38.280
get involved and then when the arms extend you'll see that they'll extend
28
00:01:38.280 --> 00:01:44.040
more towards the target which keeps the club low to the ground. Many amateurs
29
00:01:44.040 --> 00:01:44.120
who
30
00:01:44.120 --> 00:01:48.040
struggle with the driver get the arms involved too soon and then they have to
31
00:01:48.040 --> 00:01:51.160
kind of bend and you'll see that the club doesn't stay low to the ground for a
32
00:01:51.160 --> 00:01:55.880
very long period of time. So you're gonna set up three tees and you're
33
00:01:55.880 --> 00:02:04.440
basically going to try and just brush the top of all three tees. It's quite
34
00:02:04.440 --> 00:02:09.280
hard to do in practice and actually hit a ball but it gives you a little bit
35
00:02:09.280 --> 00:02:09.480
more
36
00:02:09.480 --> 00:02:15.040
of a visual of trying to practice getting that club height to the ground to be
37
00:02:15.040 --> 00:02:15.080
a
38
00:02:15.080 --> 00:02:19.050
little bit more flat or consistent through there. That should help give you
39
00:02:19.050 --> 00:02:19.440
more
40
00:02:19.440 --> 00:02:23.720
high-face contact. When it tends to come up pretty quickly you'll hit it more
41
00:02:23.720 --> 00:02:23.840
on
42
00:02:23.840 --> 00:02:28.240
the bottom of the club it'll feel thin and launched really low. So this will
43
00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:28.360
give
44
00:02:28.360 --> 00:02:33.520
us high face contact and in order to do so it's going to require a little bit
45
00:02:33.520 --> 00:02:37.880
better sequencing. Okay so then in demonstrating it's a little hard because
46
00:02:37.880 --> 00:02:44.120
you can't set up normal because the T would get in the way of your takeaway. So
47
00:02:44.120 --> 00:02:51.280
you're just going to try and hover a little bit and then clip all three tees on
48
00:02:51.280 --> 00:02:51.360
a
49
00:02:51.360 --> 00:02:55.520
little 9 to 3 so the height of the club is low to the ground for a long period
50
00:02:55.520 --> 00:03:03.560
of time. So as you get better at this drill you can work on having the tees a
51
00:03:03.560 --> 00:03:08.390
little bit further apart. So six inches is kind of the baseline but I like to
52
00:03:08.390 --> 00:03:08.520
see
53
00:03:08.520 --> 00:03:12.220
it close to the ground all the way from right foot through the left foot. So we
54
00:03:12.220 --> 00:03:12.320
'll
55
00:03:12.320 --> 00:03:21.400
see if we can get all three tees with a semi-normal swing. So you'll see it was
56
00:03:21.400 --> 00:03:24.800
a pretty good launch from the down the line. Pretty good flat spot clipping all
57
00:03:24.800 --> 00:03:27.240
three tees.
