How to relate your ball flight to how your swing looks on video.
When analyzing your swing on video you want to look for path and face keys.
Path keys:
- Start at P6 and P8 to get the overall shape of the path. Compare the clubhead location to the hands location. This relationship at P6 and P8 gives you a good approximation of the path.
Face keys:
- Look at P2 to get a good snapshot of your grip interaction with the face
- Look at P6 to see the clubface relationship.
- If it's off at P6, then investigate the top of the swing or transition
- If it's solid at p6 but the ball still doesn't curve as you like, then it's a release issue
- Look at P8 to see the clubface relationship after impact. This helps you see how the face changed during the release.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.880
Okay, when it comes to analyzing your video for ball flight, we're primarily
2
00:00:07.880 --> 00:00:08.160
going to
3
00:00:08.160 --> 00:00:10.120
look at it from down the line.
4
00:00:10.120 --> 00:00:14.610
So basically, you're going to have the camera set up behind as if we were
5
00:00:14.610 --> 00:00:15.840
hitting here into
6
00:00:15.840 --> 00:00:17.240
the monitor.
7
00:00:17.240 --> 00:00:21.600
For the contact or solid contact, we were primarily looking at face-on.
8
00:00:21.600 --> 00:00:23.800
Now we're looking at down the line or DTL.
9
00:00:23.800 --> 00:00:27.240
If you ever see that on the site, it means down the line.
10
00:00:27.240 --> 00:00:30.680
We're going to look primarily from P6 to P8 again.
11
00:00:30.680 --> 00:00:36.350
So basically, from when the club is parallel here in the downswing, to when the
12
00:00:36.350 --> 00:00:36.920
club is
13
00:00:36.920 --> 00:00:40.080
parallel here in the follow-through.
14
00:00:40.080 --> 00:00:45.100
We will have checkpoints for looking at the path based on the club head
15
00:00:45.100 --> 00:00:46.080
location.
16
00:00:46.080 --> 00:00:51.920
So is it out there compared to the hands inside or even with where is it here
17
00:00:51.920 --> 00:00:52.880
in this first
18
00:00:52.880 --> 00:00:56.480
checkpoint and then where is it in this second checkpoint?
19
00:00:56.480 --> 00:01:02.360
That will give us a good indicator as far as the rough pattern for the path.
20
00:01:02.360 --> 00:01:07.720
And then face the path, we can look at where is this club head in space.
21
00:01:07.720 --> 00:01:11.920
We've got videos to go through a little bit more details there.
22
00:01:11.920 --> 00:01:19.030
So your first checkpoint is the path and the club face in a good position here
23
00:01:19.030 --> 00:01:19.800
at P6.
24
00:01:19.800 --> 00:01:23.920
And then that tells you what was happening, you know, previous to it.
25
00:01:23.920 --> 00:01:28.280
So did I mess it up in the backswing or in transition?
26
00:01:28.280 --> 00:01:31.200
If it's in a good position there, but I'm still struggling with getting the
27
00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:31.780
ball flight
28
00:01:31.780 --> 00:01:36.990
I want, then it's usually more of a release error happening from there to
29
00:01:36.990 --> 00:01:37.800
impact.
30
00:01:37.800 --> 00:01:44.160
And that'll show up primarily between this P6 and P8 position.
31
00:01:44.160 --> 00:01:49.640
Now the one thing that you can look at from face on view is looking at shaft
32
00:01:49.640 --> 00:01:50.360
lean.
33
00:01:50.360 --> 00:01:56.050
And one of the videos you will understand that having the shaft lean back helps
34
00:01:56.050 --> 00:01:56.480
a lot
35
00:01:56.480 --> 00:01:58.680
of golfers close the face.
36
00:01:58.680 --> 00:02:03.140
So if you look at the down the line video and you're trying to understand the
37
00:02:03.140 --> 00:02:05.400
ball flight,
38
00:02:05.400 --> 00:02:10.710
you have to understand that having, looking at it from face on, if you see a
39
00:02:10.710 --> 00:02:11.440
big scoop
40
00:02:11.440 --> 00:02:17.080
like this, that is going to make the path go more out to end or to the left.
41
00:02:17.080 --> 00:02:19.080
And that's going to close the face.
42
00:02:19.080 --> 00:02:25.120
So if you were in a really open position there, but then hit a lot of poles, it
43
00:02:25.120 --> 00:02:26.320
largely means
44
00:02:26.320 --> 00:02:27.800
that it's a release error.
45
00:02:27.800 --> 00:02:33.040
So by using those couple different positions, we can diagnose what's going on.
46
00:02:33.040 --> 00:02:36.680
Is it more of a path issue or more of a face issue?
47
00:02:36.680 --> 00:02:42.600
When we circle back to this in the later rounds, we will dig into how to change
48
00:02:42.600 --> 00:02:43.400
those even
49
00:02:43.400 --> 00:02:46.960
better, but I want to make sure that you at least understand what kind of
50
00:02:46.960 --> 00:02:47.600
category you
51
00:02:47.600 --> 00:02:50.040
fit in and how it fits into the big picture.
52
00:02:50.040 --> 00:02:53.330
As the quick summary about ball flight training, you've got couple major
53
00:02:53.330 --> 00:02:54.360
variables, the path
54
00:02:54.360 --> 00:02:57.200
of the club as well as the face to path.
55
00:02:57.200 --> 00:03:00.430
The ball starts wherever the face is pointing at impact and then it curves
56
00:03:00.430 --> 00:03:01.080
based on the
57
00:03:01.080 --> 00:03:03.200
face to path relationship.
58
00:03:03.200 --> 00:03:07.660
You want to learn to control each one of those variables in order to master
59
00:03:07.660 --> 00:03:08.640
ball flight.
60
00:03:08.640 --> 00:03:13.200
The big factors are if you're trying to control the face, it really comes down
61
00:03:13.200 --> 00:03:13.760
to how did
62
00:03:13.760 --> 00:03:18.450
I grip the club and then what type of movements are my arms and my hands doing
63
00:03:18.450 --> 00:03:19.320
and how much
64
00:03:19.320 --> 00:03:20.920
shaft lean do I have.
65
00:03:20.920 --> 00:03:25.720
So those influence where the club face is pointing at impact.
66
00:03:25.720 --> 00:03:29.560
When it comes to the path, you want to figure out, well, was it more of a
67
00:03:29.560 --> 00:03:30.600
transition issue
68
00:03:30.600 --> 00:03:32.960
or was it more of a release issue?
69
00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:38.270
You can use that by looking at where is the club or club head at P6 as well as
70
00:03:38.270 --> 00:03:38.720
P8 and
71
00:03:38.720 --> 00:03:43.180
then kind of factoring in the rest of the swing to how it fits into that
72
00:03:43.180 --> 00:03:44.280
overall puzzle.
73
00:03:44.280 --> 00:03:49.150
Now in the next class, we're going to talk about adjusting the swing for the
74
00:03:49.150 --> 00:03:50.200
driver versus
75
00:03:50.200 --> 00:03:54.660
iron because you may find that sometimes you're driver great, sometimes you hit
76
00:03:54.660 --> 00:03:54.760
your
77
00:03:54.760 --> 00:04:01.050
irons great, but oftentimes it's not on the same day or you might, most days I
78
00:04:01.050 --> 00:04:01.680
hit my
79
00:04:01.680 --> 00:04:04.960
irons great, but I don't drive it very well or vice versa.
80
00:04:04.960 --> 00:04:09.980
So in the next section, we're going to talk about how you have to adjust your
81
00:04:09.980 --> 00:04:10.640
swing for
82
00:04:10.640 --> 00:04:16.790
the different clubs and that will help you understand and master this face to
83
00:04:16.790 --> 00:04:17.440
path as
84
00:04:17.440 --> 00:04:22.560
well as low pulling control even more.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.880
Okay, when it comes to analyzing your video for ball flight, we're primarily
2
00:00:07.880 --> 00:00:08.160
going to
3
00:00:08.160 --> 00:00:10.120
look at it from down the line.
4
00:00:10.120 --> 00:00:14.610
So basically, you're going to have the camera set up behind as if we were
5
00:00:14.610 --> 00:00:15.840
hitting here into
6
00:00:15.840 --> 00:00:17.240
the monitor.
7
00:00:17.240 --> 00:00:21.600
For the contact or solid contact, we were primarily looking at face-on.
8
00:00:21.600 --> 00:00:23.800
Now we're looking at down the line or DTL.
9
00:00:23.800 --> 00:00:27.240
If you ever see that on the site, it means down the line.
10
00:00:27.240 --> 00:00:30.680
We're going to look primarily from P6 to P8 again.
11
00:00:30.680 --> 00:00:36.350
So basically, from when the club is parallel here in the downswing, to when the
12
00:00:36.350 --> 00:00:36.920
club is
13
00:00:36.920 --> 00:00:40.080
parallel here in the follow-through.
14
00:00:40.080 --> 00:00:45.100
We will have checkpoints for looking at the path based on the club head
15
00:00:45.100 --> 00:00:46.080
location.
16
00:00:46.080 --> 00:00:51.920
So is it out there compared to the hands inside or even with where is it here
17
00:00:51.920 --> 00:00:52.880
in this first
18
00:00:52.880 --> 00:00:56.480
checkpoint and then where is it in this second checkpoint?
19
00:00:56.480 --> 00:01:02.360
That will give us a good indicator as far as the rough pattern for the path.
20
00:01:02.360 --> 00:01:07.720
And then face the path, we can look at where is this club head in space.
21
00:01:07.720 --> 00:01:11.920
We've got videos to go through a little bit more details there.
22
00:01:11.920 --> 00:01:19.030
So your first checkpoint is the path and the club face in a good position here
23
00:01:19.030 --> 00:01:19.800
at P6.
24
00:01:19.800 --> 00:01:23.920
And then that tells you what was happening, you know, previous to it.
25
00:01:23.920 --> 00:01:28.280
So did I mess it up in the backswing or in transition?
26
00:01:28.280 --> 00:01:31.200
If it's in a good position there, but I'm still struggling with getting the
27
00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:31.780
ball flight
28
00:01:31.780 --> 00:01:36.990
I want, then it's usually more of a release error happening from there to
29
00:01:36.990 --> 00:01:37.800
impact.
30
00:01:37.800 --> 00:01:44.160
And that'll show up primarily between this P6 and P8 position.
31
00:01:44.160 --> 00:01:49.640
Now the one thing that you can look at from face on view is looking at shaft
32
00:01:49.640 --> 00:01:50.360
lean.
33
00:01:50.360 --> 00:01:56.050
And one of the videos you will understand that having the shaft lean back helps
34
00:01:56.050 --> 00:01:56.480
a lot
35
00:01:56.480 --> 00:01:58.680
of golfers close the face.
36
00:01:58.680 --> 00:02:03.140
So if you look at the down the line video and you're trying to understand the
37
00:02:03.140 --> 00:02:05.400
ball flight,
38
00:02:05.400 --> 00:02:10.710
you have to understand that having, looking at it from face on, if you see a
39
00:02:10.710 --> 00:02:11.440
big scoop
40
00:02:11.440 --> 00:02:17.080
like this, that is going to make the path go more out to end or to the left.
41
00:02:17.080 --> 00:02:19.080
And that's going to close the face.
42
00:02:19.080 --> 00:02:25.120
So if you were in a really open position there, but then hit a lot of poles, it
43
00:02:25.120 --> 00:02:26.320
largely means
44
00:02:26.320 --> 00:02:27.800
that it's a release error.
45
00:02:27.800 --> 00:02:33.040
So by using those couple different positions, we can diagnose what's going on.
46
00:02:33.040 --> 00:02:36.680
Is it more of a path issue or more of a face issue?
47
00:02:36.680 --> 00:02:42.600
When we circle back to this in the later rounds, we will dig into how to change
48
00:02:42.600 --> 00:02:43.400
those even
49
00:02:43.400 --> 00:02:46.960
better, but I want to make sure that you at least understand what kind of
50
00:02:46.960 --> 00:02:47.600
category you
51
00:02:47.600 --> 00:02:50.040
fit in and how it fits into the big picture.
52
00:02:50.040 --> 00:02:53.330
As the quick summary about ball flight training, you've got couple major
53
00:02:53.330 --> 00:02:54.360
variables, the path
54
00:02:54.360 --> 00:02:57.200
of the club as well as the face to path.
55
00:02:57.200 --> 00:03:00.430
The ball starts wherever the face is pointing at impact and then it curves
56
00:03:00.430 --> 00:03:01.080
based on the
57
00:03:01.080 --> 00:03:03.200
face to path relationship.
58
00:03:03.200 --> 00:03:07.660
You want to learn to control each one of those variables in order to master
59
00:03:07.660 --> 00:03:08.640
ball flight.
60
00:03:08.640 --> 00:03:13.200
The big factors are if you're trying to control the face, it really comes down
61
00:03:13.200 --> 00:03:13.760
to how did
62
00:03:13.760 --> 00:03:18.450
I grip the club and then what type of movements are my arms and my hands doing
63
00:03:18.450 --> 00:03:19.320
and how much
64
00:03:19.320 --> 00:03:20.920
shaft lean do I have.
65
00:03:20.920 --> 00:03:25.720
So those influence where the club face is pointing at impact.
66
00:03:25.720 --> 00:03:29.560
When it comes to the path, you want to figure out, well, was it more of a
67
00:03:29.560 --> 00:03:30.600
transition issue
68
00:03:30.600 --> 00:03:32.960
or was it more of a release issue?
69
00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:38.270
You can use that by looking at where is the club or club head at P6 as well as
70
00:03:38.270 --> 00:03:38.720
P8 and
71
00:03:38.720 --> 00:03:43.180
then kind of factoring in the rest of the swing to how it fits into that
72
00:03:43.180 --> 00:03:44.280
overall puzzle.
73
00:03:44.280 --> 00:03:49.150
Now in the next class, we're going to talk about adjusting the swing for the
74
00:03:49.150 --> 00:03:50.200
driver versus
75
00:03:50.200 --> 00:03:54.660
iron because you may find that sometimes you're driver great, sometimes you hit
76
00:03:54.660 --> 00:03:54.760
your
77
00:03:54.760 --> 00:04:01.050
irons great, but oftentimes it's not on the same day or you might, most days I
78
00:04:01.050 --> 00:04:01.680
hit my
79
00:04:01.680 --> 00:04:04.960
irons great, but I don't drive it very well or vice versa.
80
00:04:04.960 --> 00:04:09.980
So in the next section, we're going to talk about how you have to adjust your
81
00:04:09.980 --> 00:04:10.640
swing for
82
00:04:10.640 --> 00:04:16.790
the different clubs and that will help you understand and master this face to
83
00:04:16.790 --> 00:04:17.440
path as
84
00:04:17.440 --> 00:04:22.560
well as low pulling control even more.
