Driver Killers and Iron Killers - If you struggle with the driver vs iron, it usually means the general shape of the swing doesn't fit the design of that club. The driver has a flatter bottom of the swing and is on a more shallow angle, while the iron swing is more circular with a steeper angle of attack.

Driver Killers (sequencing and path control)

  • Upper Body Dominant
  • Steep Problems
    • AOA (no tilt or ulnar)
    • Steep release (no ulnar)
    • Steep Arms (down or rotate left)
  • Open Face late
  • Under Rotated backswing

Irons (low point and face control)

  • Scoop/flip
  • Chicken wing/elbow bend
  • Body Problems
    • Early Extension
    • Excessive tilt
  • Upper over right foot
  • Excessive path right or left

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.750
All right, in this class, we are going to go into the details of troubles

2
00:00:07.750 --> 00:00:08.360
hooting your

3
00:00:08.360 --> 00:00:10.320
driver versus your iron.

4
00:00:10.320 --> 00:00:14.250
So the first time we visited driver and iron, which have been a few classes ago

5
00:00:14.250 --> 00:00:14.960
, we talked

6
00:00:14.960 --> 00:00:21.470
about the bigger, the big issues of kind of having enough tilt or being behind

7
00:00:21.470 --> 00:00:21.880
and in

8
00:00:21.880 --> 00:00:23.760
general the shape of the swing.

9
00:00:23.760 --> 00:00:30.140
So with the driver, we are trying to have more of a flat kind of gradual

10
00:00:30.140 --> 00:00:31.540
movement kind

11
00:00:31.540 --> 00:00:32.540
of like this.

12
00:00:32.540 --> 00:00:36.400
With the iron, we are trying to have a little bit more of a downward and

13
00:00:36.400 --> 00:00:37.620
covering blow like

14
00:00:37.620 --> 00:00:38.620
that.

15
00:00:38.620 --> 00:00:46.700
Well, as a general shape, with the driver, we're trying to kind of squish this

16
00:00:46.700 --> 00:00:47.920
hula hoop.

17
00:00:47.920 --> 00:00:53.370
So we're trying to get this hula hoop or the shape down at the bottom to be

18
00:00:53.370 --> 00:00:54.240
more kind

19
00:00:54.240 --> 00:00:58.740
of flat like this, where with the iron, the more important thing is just making

20
00:00:58.740 --> 00:00:59.000
sure that

21
00:00:59.000 --> 00:01:01.200
the bottom of it is slightly ahead.

22
00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:06.010
So the irons, in general, are more sensitive to the low point control and just

23
00:01:06.010 --> 00:01:06.640
the face

24
00:01:06.640 --> 00:01:07.640
control.

25
00:01:07.640 --> 00:01:12.760
They're a little bit more forgiving on the overall path, where the driver is

26
00:01:12.760 --> 00:01:13.840
more sensitive

27
00:01:13.840 --> 00:01:18.260
to the sequencing or more sensitive to the path control.

28
00:01:18.260 --> 00:01:22.810
Yes, you still have to control the club face with the driver, but because you

29
00:01:22.810 --> 00:01:23.320
're doing

30
00:01:23.320 --> 00:01:29.360
it a little bit more gradually, I tend to think of it needing more work on the

31
00:01:29.360 --> 00:01:30.960
path control.

32
00:01:30.960 --> 00:01:36.460
So the major driver killers and the major iron killers, iron killers really

33
00:01:36.460 --> 00:01:37.200
relate to

34
00:01:37.200 --> 00:01:39.840
the low point as well as a little bit of face.

35
00:01:39.840 --> 00:01:45.610
Other killers relate to more of the path and sequencing with a little bit of

36
00:01:45.610 --> 00:01:46.360
face.

37
00:01:46.360 --> 00:01:51.010
So the big driver killers, if you get two upper body dominant that will tend to

38
00:01:51.010 --> 00:01:51.640
get your upper

39
00:01:51.640 --> 00:01:58.960
body on top, and it will tend to hit more down on the ball.

40
00:01:58.960 --> 00:02:03.460
Here's an example that I give as far as one of the big differences between

41
00:02:03.460 --> 00:02:04.400
driver and iron.

42
00:02:04.400 --> 00:02:06.960
So I tell the story a lot.

43
00:02:06.960 --> 00:02:10.520
Just looking at, let's say we were playing tennis or ping pong.

44
00:02:10.520 --> 00:02:14.510
To be a good driver of the golf ball, we essentially want to have very little

45
00:02:14.510 --> 00:02:15.640
change of the club

46
00:02:15.640 --> 00:02:21.720
head, having a gently moving path kind of like this through the ball.

47
00:02:21.720 --> 00:02:25.150
Poor drivers of the golf ball will tend to have the face open and kind of like

48
00:02:25.150 --> 00:02:25.640
closing

49
00:02:25.640 --> 00:02:30.450
a lot like this, or they will tend to have the club coming down and kind of

50
00:02:30.450 --> 00:02:31.400
sweeping up

51
00:02:31.400 --> 00:02:32.840
like this.

52
00:02:32.840 --> 00:02:36.240
Now you might think, well, why doesn't that cause any problems with their irons

53
00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:36.480
?

54
00:02:36.480 --> 00:02:39.560
So I use the ping pong paddle.

55
00:02:39.560 --> 00:02:41.200
The ping pong paddle is super light.

56
00:02:41.200 --> 00:02:46.580
I can, with a pretty high precision, I could do these quick changes last minute

57
00:02:46.580 --> 00:02:47.120
and hit

58
00:02:47.120 --> 00:02:49.840
the ball relatively towards my target.

59
00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:53.610
But if you change this, if this was a 20-pound object where I was holding it

60
00:02:53.610 --> 00:02:54.520
really heavy,

61
00:02:54.520 --> 00:02:58.650
or if it was a really long object, let's say that the club was five feet away

62
00:02:58.650 --> 00:03:00.200
from me,

63
00:03:00.200 --> 00:03:05.790
it would take a lot more effort for me to get the club face to change or to

64
00:03:05.790 --> 00:03:06.640
swing the

65
00:03:06.640 --> 00:03:08.200
club.

66
00:03:08.200 --> 00:03:11.720
As a result, I would want to get momentum working in my favor.

67
00:03:11.720 --> 00:03:14.560
I would want to get things kind of lined up sooner.

68
00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:19.060
The driver is a longer club, and it's one that we swing faster, so it tends to

69
00:03:19.060 --> 00:03:19.200
fall

70
00:03:19.200 --> 00:03:20.960
into that pattern of being heavier.

71
00:03:20.960 --> 00:03:23.000
It's got more inertia working with it.

72
00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:28.450
So all of the drills that we have over there on the right, they tend to get the

73
00:03:28.450 --> 00:03:29.040
driver

74
00:03:29.040 --> 00:03:36.130
head working a little bit more stable or less change both in the height and the

75
00:03:36.130 --> 00:03:37.000
path and

76
00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:39.480
in the club face.

77
00:03:39.480 --> 00:03:45.060
So if you're looking at your driver, you want to see about the path coming into

78
00:03:45.060 --> 00:03:45.400
the

79
00:03:45.400 --> 00:03:49.900
ball, as well as the club face, that'll help you identify what area you need to

80
00:03:49.900 --> 00:03:51.400
work on.

81
00:03:51.400 --> 00:03:55.140
And if you get it more powered from your hips and your core, that tends to

82
00:03:55.140 --> 00:03:56.680
double up on

83
00:03:56.680 --> 00:04:01.180
getting the less change of the path, as well as a little bit flatter path, or

84
00:04:01.180 --> 00:04:01.640
more of

85
00:04:01.640 --> 00:04:06.160
this kind of shallow arc or U-shaped swing.

86
00:04:06.160 --> 00:04:10.970
With the iron control, if I trade that out, with the iron control, we already

87
00:04:10.970 --> 00:04:11.760
talked about

88
00:04:11.760 --> 00:04:15.080
solid contact coming from this low point control.

89
00:04:15.080 --> 00:04:20.050
Well, the big things that influence low point are going to have be more of a

90
00:04:20.050 --> 00:04:20.960
scoop flip-type

91
00:04:20.960 --> 00:04:23.560
movement or narrowing in the arc.

92
00:04:23.560 --> 00:04:27.600
When we're looking at controlling low point, a lot of it is this radius control

93
00:04:27.600 --> 00:04:27.880
.

94
00:04:27.880 --> 00:04:32.440
So how the timing of my arm straightening, as well as the location of my upper

95
00:04:32.440 --> 00:04:33.080
body.

96
00:04:33.080 --> 00:04:38.650
With the irons, the big thing is, if I'm too far behind, if I'm too far up, if

97
00:04:38.650 --> 00:04:39.440
I'm scooping

98
00:04:39.440 --> 00:04:43.500
and bending, that messes up my contact, makes it really hard to get consistent

99
00:04:43.500 --> 00:04:44.760
distance control,

100
00:04:44.760 --> 00:04:49.750
as well as lost control, if I'm not hitting the ground in the same spot each

101
00:04:49.750 --> 00:04:50.440
time.

102
00:04:50.440 --> 00:04:54.430
So you'll work on the big ones, we'll talk more about chicken wing and elbow

103
00:04:54.430 --> 00:04:55.080
bend, if

104
00:04:55.080 --> 00:04:59.580
you see that on video, scoop flip, that's a common one that you'll see, and

105
00:04:59.580 --> 00:05:00.360
then revisiting

106
00:05:00.360 --> 00:05:06.300
some of the big body problems, more of the early extension, too much side tilt,

107
00:05:06.300 --> 00:05:06.720
or kind

108
00:05:06.720 --> 00:05:09.600
of more of a hangback type movement.

109
00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:16.540
You can, we will discuss a little bit the path getting excessively into out or

110
00:05:16.540 --> 00:05:17.040
out to

111
00:05:17.040 --> 00:05:21.890
end, but as long as you're within four or five degrees of your target, you'll

112
00:05:21.890 --> 00:05:22.600
probably

113
00:05:22.600 --> 00:05:27.750
be fine as far as the path goes, the driver is a little bit more path sensitive

114
00:05:27.750 --> 00:05:28.080
.

115
00:05:28.080 --> 00:05:33.050
Now because the driver relates to sequencing, if you try these drills and you

116
00:05:33.050 --> 00:05:33.920
're still having

117
00:05:33.920 --> 00:05:37.670
a little bit of trouble, like you're doing it maybe on 10 to 2s pretty well,

118
00:05:37.670 --> 00:05:38.200
but it breaks

119
00:05:38.200 --> 00:05:43.390
down on your full driver attempt, then fear not, it could be sequencing that is

120
00:05:43.390 --> 00:05:44.040
holding

121
00:05:44.040 --> 00:05:49.000
you back, and that's what we'll cover in the next class.
