Use this simple framework for building, and analyzing, your stock swing

9-3, 10-2, and full swing are three standard length swings you should be practicing each range session. 9-3's work well for identifying release and bracing issues while also doubling as a good recovery shot out of the trees. 10-2's are good punch shots and help with distance wedge control. They also can identify backswing pivot issues. If those two are both working well, and you are struggling with full swings, then it's likely an issue with transition or the end of your backswing. Use this progresson to help train your full swing efficiently.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.600
This video is 93 10-2 full swing.

2
00:00:07.600 --> 00:00:12.320
So this concept video is just a quick reminder of the progressions you want to

3
00:00:12.320 --> 00:00:12.680
work through

4
00:00:12.680 --> 00:00:18.200
when you're practicing on impact or practicing working on solid contact.

5
00:00:18.200 --> 00:00:22.620
A lot of golfers just like to try to take full swings and kind of lash at it

6
00:00:22.620 --> 00:00:23.680
and go at one

7
00:00:23.680 --> 00:00:31.870
speed and there can be some simplicity in that but it tends to have less carry

8
00:00:31.870 --> 00:00:33.440
over or it

9
00:00:33.440 --> 00:00:38.050
tends to have less quick improvements compared to if you break it down and take

10
00:00:38.050 --> 00:00:38.800
it a little

11
00:00:38.800 --> 00:00:41.280
bit more in a baby step fashion.

12
00:00:41.280 --> 00:00:45.100
So the prescription I normally give is we're going to work on swings where we

13
00:00:45.100 --> 00:00:45.480
're going

14
00:00:45.480 --> 00:00:49.900
to do 93 which is bringing it back to about belly button height and then we're

15
00:00:49.900 --> 00:00:50.240
going to

16
00:00:50.240 --> 00:00:54.930
do 10 to 2 which is bringing the hands back to about chest height and then we

17
00:00:54.930 --> 00:00:55.560
're going

18
00:00:55.560 --> 00:01:00.030
to do full swing which is bringing the club up close to parallel or hands up to

19
00:01:00.030 --> 00:01:00.480
about

20
00:01:00.480 --> 00:01:02.320
shoulder height.

21
00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:08.660
So you can also work with kind of a slow tempo, medium tempo, full tempo if you

22
00:01:08.660 --> 00:01:09.760
really want

23
00:01:09.760 --> 00:01:14.800
to kind of dial it in and give yourself more opportunity.

24
00:01:14.800 --> 00:01:17.990
Usually what will happen is if you're struggling with low point control, if you

25
00:01:17.990 --> 00:01:18.760
're struggling

26
00:01:18.760 --> 00:01:24.880
with solid contact a lot of golfers use effort to try to mask technique.

27
00:01:24.880 --> 00:01:31.340
If you are doing this with pretty good technique then you can do shorter and

28
00:01:31.340 --> 00:01:32.880
slower and still

29
00:01:32.880 --> 00:01:41.320
make solid contact but if you are used to a certain effort, if you're used to

30
00:01:41.320 --> 00:01:42.200
kind of

31
00:01:42.200 --> 00:01:45.690
swinging hard with your arms and balancing it out with the body, if you try to

32
00:01:45.690 --> 00:01:46.120
shorten

33
00:01:46.120 --> 00:01:50.040
it or slow it down it disrupts your timing and you end up making worse contact.

34
00:01:50.040 --> 00:01:56.440
So a sign that you actually have better technique is that you can either slow

35
00:01:56.440 --> 00:01:57.500
it down, shorten

36
00:01:57.500 --> 00:02:00.640
it and still get the same contact.

37
00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:04.040
Also being able to practice the different length back swings can be useful on

38
00:02:04.040 --> 00:02:05.000
the course.

39
00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:09.420
Usually the 10 to 2 is more when we're going to hit kind of a flighted punch

40
00:02:09.420 --> 00:02:09.880
shot.

41
00:02:09.880 --> 00:02:14.300
We use that on a lot of the shots inside 100 yards and the 9 to 3 can be really

42
00:02:14.300 --> 00:02:14.700
useful

43
00:02:14.700 --> 00:02:18.670
on your punch recovery shots out of the trees because with the shorter swing it

44
00:02:18.670 --> 00:02:19.260
will tend

45
00:02:19.260 --> 00:02:23.680
to hit it low and so if you're used to doing that with a 7 iron or 6 iron it

46
00:02:23.680 --> 00:02:24.560
won't be too

47
00:02:24.560 --> 00:02:29.240
big of a problem if you need to hit kind of a low recovery shot that goes about

48
00:02:29.240 --> 00:02:30.320
100 yards

49
00:02:30.320 --> 00:02:32.280
out of the trees.

50
00:02:32.280 --> 00:02:38.880
So while you're working through these low point drills I highly recommend that

51
00:02:38.880 --> 00:02:39.620
you work

52
00:02:39.620 --> 00:02:45.580
this length of swing progression into your practice, so 10 to 2, 9 to 3 full

53
00:02:45.580 --> 00:02:46.600
swing trying

54
00:02:46.600 --> 00:02:52.200
to get the same contact or the same kind of low point look on video.

55
00:02:52.200 --> 00:02:57.640
That'll help you identify where your sequence is breaking down, where you might

56
00:02:57.640 --> 00:02:58.200
be kind

57
00:02:58.200 --> 00:02:59.720
of compensating.

58
00:02:59.720 --> 00:03:03.680
It can be a really good diagnostic as well as a really good training tool.

59
00:03:03.680 --> 00:03:08.100
So let's say I'm just working on the merry-go-round so I'm working on impact

60
00:03:08.100 --> 00:03:08.820
position.

61
00:03:08.820 --> 00:03:15.440
Now I'm going to do a 9 to 3 getting into that impact position.

62
00:03:15.440 --> 00:03:20.070
Now I'm going to do a reminder of that impact position, now we're going to do a

63
00:03:20.070 --> 00:03:20.800
little bit

64
00:03:20.800 --> 00:03:27.960
bigger swing, pretty close to the same maybe just a tiny bit heavier.

65
00:03:27.960 --> 00:03:32.040
So perhaps I got a little lost in my backswing or perhaps the longer swing

66
00:03:32.040 --> 00:03:34.720
messed up my transition.

67
00:03:34.720 --> 00:03:44.330
Now we'll go fuller swing, so working on that preset, impact fix, merry-go-

68
00:03:44.330 --> 00:03:45.300
round, up to

69
00:03:45.300 --> 00:03:47.860
close to a full swing.

70
00:03:47.860 --> 00:03:51.290
So you can see the benefit in working on this progression is I can start to

71
00:03:51.290 --> 00:03:52.140
identify, well

72
00:03:52.140 --> 00:03:56.560
hey, when I go to the 10 to 2 I start to get in a little bit of trouble, that

73
00:03:56.560 --> 00:03:56.700
might be

74
00:03:56.700 --> 00:03:59.020
the zone that I want to train today.

75
00:03:59.020 --> 00:04:03.440
So 9 to 3 10 to 2 full swing, if you get in the habit of doing that either with

76
00:04:03.440 --> 00:04:03.580
slow

77
00:04:03.580 --> 00:04:08.130
or just regular speed, that'll help serve as a really good diagnostic tool as

78
00:04:08.130 --> 00:04:08.640
to where

79
00:04:08.640 --> 00:04:12.650
your swing is getting off, as well as a sequencing drill to make sure that you

80
00:04:12.650 --> 00:04:13.580
're doing all these

81
00:04:13.580 --> 00:04:15.920
movements in unison or in rhythm.
