How to determine if you should change your grip or your wrist movements

When decoding ball flight, it's important to analyze if the curve comes from a grip problem or from a wrist movement problem. This video helps you pinpoint the most useful checkpoint on video.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.060
Okay, in this concept video, we're going to discuss the wrist movements versus

2
00:00:08.060 --> 00:00:08.520
the grip

3
00:00:08.520 --> 00:00:10.120
for clubface control.

4
00:00:10.120 --> 00:00:14.800
So there are three main factors for where is the clubface pointing in your

5
00:00:14.800 --> 00:00:15.480
swing.

6
00:00:15.480 --> 00:00:19.960
One is how did you set up with your hands on the club?

7
00:00:19.960 --> 00:00:25.640
Did you set up with the top of your wrist more on the right side?

8
00:00:25.640 --> 00:00:27.920
Did you set up with it more on top?

9
00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:31.120
This is what we refer to as strong or weak with either hand.

10
00:00:31.120 --> 00:00:35.810
So if the hands are more on top, this is in a weak position, which just means

11
00:00:35.810 --> 00:00:36.600
that as

12
00:00:36.600 --> 00:00:40.220
you extend the arms, you will see the clubface tends to come back pointing more

13
00:00:40.220 --> 00:00:40.920
to the right

14
00:00:40.920 --> 00:00:42.600
or with more loft.

15
00:00:42.600 --> 00:00:47.960
The more that you put your hands on the side, on the trail side or underneath.

16
00:00:47.960 --> 00:00:52.200
Now as your arms release out in front of you, the club will tend to deloft or

17
00:00:52.200 --> 00:00:52.800
come in more

18
00:00:52.800 --> 00:00:53.800
closed.

19
00:00:53.800 --> 00:00:58.530
So I call that a strong grip, so how I set up with my hands is one factor, but

20
00:00:58.530 --> 00:00:59.180
then how

21
00:00:59.180 --> 00:01:01.160
I use my hands is the other.

22
00:01:01.160 --> 00:01:09.150
So if I set up with my hands like this and I twist my wrist or bow my wrist,

23
00:01:09.150 --> 00:01:10.220
the more

24
00:01:10.220 --> 00:01:16.280
that I do these movements that twist the club, that tends to close the clubface

25
00:01:16.280 --> 00:01:16.480
.

26
00:01:16.480 --> 00:01:20.480
So those are the two main ones that I can influence the grip with.

27
00:01:20.480 --> 00:01:23.560
The third one is shaft lean or body position.

28
00:01:23.560 --> 00:01:30.190
So the problem is I don't want to adjust that one too much because it impacts

29
00:01:30.190 --> 00:01:30.920
contact more

30
00:01:30.920 --> 00:01:33.240
than just what I'm doing with my hands.

31
00:01:33.240 --> 00:01:37.680
So by getting the good merry-go-round, by getting into a good impact position,

32
00:01:37.680 --> 00:01:38.040
that

33
00:01:38.040 --> 00:01:42.920
puts the clubhead ahead of the golf ball, creating the shaft lean.

34
00:01:42.920 --> 00:01:47.160
And if I don't change anything, that shaft lean typically opens the clubface

35
00:01:47.160 --> 00:01:47.720
somewhere

36
00:01:47.720 --> 00:01:53.320
in the 20 degree range, 20 to 30 degrees is what I usually say.

37
00:01:53.320 --> 00:02:00.460
So then I either have to balance that by setting up with a stronger grip or by

38
00:02:00.460 --> 00:02:01.560
twisting the

39
00:02:01.560 --> 00:02:02.560
clubface closed.

40
00:02:02.560 --> 00:02:08.010
If I want to try to figure out which one I want to change, I can look at the

41
00:02:08.010 --> 00:02:09.060
references

42
00:02:09.060 --> 00:02:11.440
of a shaft parallel.

43
00:02:11.440 --> 00:02:16.810
So if I look at the takeaway and I look at the clubface there, this gives me a

44
00:02:16.810 --> 00:02:17.380
sense

45
00:02:17.380 --> 00:02:20.360
of where the clubface is compared to the grip.

46
00:02:20.360 --> 00:02:24.580
And then if I compare it on the way down, that gives me a sense of, well, what

47
00:02:24.580 --> 00:02:25.280
did I do with

48
00:02:25.280 --> 00:02:27.240
my hands to square the club?

49
00:02:27.240 --> 00:02:33.490
But that last parallel checkpoint is a really kind of easy way to see do I need

50
00:02:33.490 --> 00:02:34.460
to adjust

51
00:02:34.460 --> 00:02:39.100
if the ball's not flying straight or I'm struggling with low point because I'm

52
00:02:39.100 --> 00:02:39.680
not squaring the

53
00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:44.070
clubface appropriately, that last parallel checkpoint looking at it both in the

54
00:02:44.070 --> 00:02:44.680
takeaway

55
00:02:44.680 --> 00:02:49.510
and comparing it to the downswing is a great way to figure out should I change

56
00:02:49.510 --> 00:02:50.080
my grip

57
00:02:50.080 --> 00:02:54.200
or is it something that's happening with my swing?

58
00:02:54.200 --> 00:02:58.850
Many times I've had lots of situations where golfers are slicing the ball and

59
00:02:58.850 --> 00:02:59.760
they say,

60
00:02:59.760 --> 00:03:01.160
you know, should I strengthen my grip?

61
00:03:01.160 --> 00:03:06.700
And we'll look at it on video and at this point here, the clubface is actually

62
00:03:06.700 --> 00:03:07.480
pointing

63
00:03:07.480 --> 00:03:09.600
more towards the ground kind of like this.

64
00:03:09.600 --> 00:03:14.240
But then they tend to have more of this hold off kind of scoop style release,

65
00:03:14.240 --> 00:03:14.800
which it's

66
00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:16.400
more of a push fade.

67
00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:21.170
So by changing the grip, that wouldn't really do the best long term solution of

68
00:03:21.170 --> 00:03:22.000
correcting

69
00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:25.990
what is causing the clubface open, because if we look at the timeline, it wasn

70
00:03:25.990 --> 00:03:26.480
't open

71
00:03:26.480 --> 00:03:30.000
until the release happened.

72
00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:35.140
So hopefully this video helps you figure out if you're struggling with your

73
00:03:35.140 --> 00:03:36.160
curve, be smart

74
00:03:36.160 --> 00:03:41.270
about it and look at the timeline or look at the checkpoint so you can figure

75
00:03:41.270 --> 00:03:41.680
out how

76
00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:44.320
am I going to adjust my clubface, am I going to do it with a little grip change

77
00:03:44.320 --> 00:03:44.760
, am I going

78
00:03:44.760 --> 00:03:48.450
to do it with different hand movements, or am I going to do it by working on

79
00:03:48.450 --> 00:03:49.320
the motorcycle

80
00:03:49.320 --> 00:03:51.560
or the merry-go-round and my pivot drill?

81
00:03:51.560 --> 00:03:55.850
Those are your three ways to really impact the clubface control, and when you

82
00:03:55.850 --> 00:03:56.480
find your

83
00:03:56.480 --> 00:04:01.410
balance, you will ultimately have smooth and consistent clubface control, and

84
00:04:01.410 --> 00:04:02.000
you'll be

85
00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:09.120
able to shape your shots hopefully within a reasonable amount of curve.
