Fix your most common bunker errors with this classic drill.
The woodchopper drill is high on the list of my favorite bunker drills. It does a great job of combining a no-axis-tilt downswing with a low, left, arm motion. With this drill, you'll place the club on your shoulder, then turn to face the target while staying level and swing the arms down behind your back. Pay special attention not to let the face close as it swings to the finish.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.160
This is the wood chopper drill.
2
00:00:07.160 --> 00:00:12.600
So the wood chopper drill is a great drill for blending the pivot in the arm
3
00:00:12.600 --> 00:00:13.440
motion.
4
00:00:13.440 --> 00:00:17.920
A lot of bad bunker players tend to get too much tilt back this way.
5
00:00:17.920 --> 00:00:21.460
They get behind the ball and then the arms kind of lift on the way through.
6
00:00:21.460 --> 00:00:26.720
So the wood chopper drill combines a more of a feeling of a level shoulder turn
7
00:00:26.720 --> 00:00:26.880
.
8
00:00:26.880 --> 00:00:31.160
It's not totally level, but it has a feeling of more of a level turn and more
9
00:00:31.160 --> 00:00:32.840
of a vertical
10
00:00:32.840 --> 00:00:36.000
arm action or more of a steep arm action.
11
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:39.000
So the wood chopper drill on paper is pretty simple.
12
00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:43.380
You're going to place the club on top of your shoulder just like this and we're
13
00:00:43.380 --> 00:00:43.560
going to
14
00:00:43.560 --> 00:00:47.680
turn away from the golf ball like this so that your back is to the target.
15
00:00:47.680 --> 00:00:52.020
Now what we're going to do is we're going to pivot so that we face the target
16
00:00:52.020 --> 00:00:52.600
just like
17
00:00:52.600 --> 00:00:57.860
this and at the same time we're going to swing the club down so it finishes
18
00:00:57.860 --> 00:00:59.520
behind your back.
19
00:00:59.520 --> 00:01:04.090
So if I was doing it here so that you could see from this camera I'm going to
20
00:01:04.090 --> 00:01:04.720
turn and
21
00:01:04.720 --> 00:01:12.460
I'm going to swing down and finish well low and almost behind my back kind of
22
00:01:12.460 --> 00:01:13.320
like this.
23
00:01:13.320 --> 00:01:18.760
Now my brain is not going to let me actually do that when I'm trying to hit the
24
00:01:18.760 --> 00:01:19.740
golf ball,
25
00:01:19.740 --> 00:01:25.000
but that will have more of a feeling of the upper body being stacked on top
26
00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:26.160
instead of
27
00:01:26.160 --> 00:01:27.660
getting tilted behind.
28
00:01:27.660 --> 00:01:31.710
Stack centers is one of the real big keys for being a good bunker player and
29
00:01:31.710 --> 00:01:32.320
this will
30
00:01:32.320 --> 00:01:37.380
help with releasing the club down and left.
31
00:01:37.380 --> 00:01:42.640
That release down and left has a big impact on moving the low point far enough
32
00:01:42.640 --> 00:01:43.260
forward.
33
00:01:43.260 --> 00:01:46.980
Remember a lot of bad bunker players get this tilt low point behind the ball
34
00:01:46.980 --> 00:01:47.520
and kind of
35
00:01:47.520 --> 00:01:51.540
either blade or they make contact with the sand and chunk it.
36
00:01:51.540 --> 00:01:55.140
So we're going to try to combo that into one feeling where we do a complete
37
00:01:55.140 --> 00:01:55.820
opposite.
38
00:01:55.820 --> 00:01:59.620
You may chunk some of these, but you definitely shouldn't blade it.
39
00:01:59.620 --> 00:02:02.620
You might puzzle them, but you definitely shouldn't blade it.
40
00:02:02.620 --> 00:02:06.760
So you might have to use some down the line feedback to look at or draw the
41
00:02:06.760 --> 00:02:07.700
checkerboard
42
00:02:07.700 --> 00:02:11.060
so that you can see where your contact is.
43
00:02:11.060 --> 00:02:15.220
Okay, so now let's go through a little demonstration.
44
00:02:15.220 --> 00:02:19.240
We'll put our normal bunker lines, the two lines, one front, one behind.
45
00:02:19.240 --> 00:02:23.810
We're going to pick the club up on our shoulder, make a little turn, had a
46
00:02:23.810 --> 00:02:24.960
great sound, contact
47
00:02:24.960 --> 00:02:25.960
in in a good position.
48
00:02:25.960 --> 00:02:29.600
It's a little tricky to do as a ISO drill, but we'll do it anyway.
49
00:02:29.600 --> 00:02:32.890
So we're going to pick it up, we're going to turn and we're going to feel like
50
00:02:32.890 --> 00:02:33.500
we throw
51
00:02:33.500 --> 00:02:35.800
the club down and turn and finish there.
52
00:02:35.800 --> 00:02:40.180
Now my path got a little bit outside in, but the contact location and the depth
53
00:02:40.180 --> 00:02:40.820
was pretty
54
00:02:40.820 --> 00:02:41.820
good.
55
00:02:41.820 --> 00:02:46.110
I ended up hitting a nice shot, just a little bit more of a kind of a cut feel
56
00:02:46.110 --> 00:02:46.740
to it.
57
00:02:46.740 --> 00:02:52.570
So if I like that feel, then now I can hit some regular shots, trying to just
58
00:02:52.570 --> 00:02:53.180
make a
59
00:02:53.180 --> 00:02:57.470
normal backswing and feel a little bit more level or over the top with the
60
00:02:57.470 --> 00:02:58.420
shoulders.
61
00:02:58.420 --> 00:03:03.680
Again, this is primarily for golfers who get too tilted behind, too much axis
62
00:03:03.680 --> 00:03:03.900
tilt and
63
00:03:03.900 --> 00:03:09.380
that axis tilt is causing low point control as far as the location of where it
64
00:03:09.380 --> 00:03:09.980
enters
65
00:03:09.980 --> 00:03:14.260
the sand as well as the path on the way through.
66
00:03:14.260 --> 00:03:20.000
So let's try to do one where we're just feeling a little bit more of that wood
67
00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:21.260
chopper pivot
68
00:03:21.260 --> 00:03:24.740
idea.
69
00:03:24.740 --> 00:03:30.100
And it's really good for helping create speed as well as height.
70
00:03:30.100 --> 00:03:34.730
So this can be really helpful for getting the torso to turn and getting the
71
00:03:34.730 --> 00:03:35.260
arms to
72
00:03:35.260 --> 00:03:37.780
finish in that really good follow through position.
73
00:03:37.780 --> 00:03:40.250
So try that if you're getting a little bit too much axis tilt and that's
74
00:03:40.250 --> 00:03:40.860
messing up your
75
00:03:40.860 --> 00:03:45.980
contact with your bunker shots.
76
00:03:45.980 --> 00:03:47.220
Super high, really good.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.160
This is the wood chopper drill.
2
00:00:07.160 --> 00:00:12.600
So the wood chopper drill is a great drill for blending the pivot in the arm
3
00:00:12.600 --> 00:00:13.440
motion.
4
00:00:13.440 --> 00:00:17.920
A lot of bad bunker players tend to get too much tilt back this way.
5
00:00:17.920 --> 00:00:21.460
They get behind the ball and then the arms kind of lift on the way through.
6
00:00:21.460 --> 00:00:26.720
So the wood chopper drill combines a more of a feeling of a level shoulder turn
7
00:00:26.720 --> 00:00:26.880
.
8
00:00:26.880 --> 00:00:31.160
It's not totally level, but it has a feeling of more of a level turn and more
9
00:00:31.160 --> 00:00:32.840
of a vertical
10
00:00:32.840 --> 00:00:36.000
arm action or more of a steep arm action.
11
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:39.000
So the wood chopper drill on paper is pretty simple.
12
00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:43.380
You're going to place the club on top of your shoulder just like this and we're
13
00:00:43.380 --> 00:00:43.560
going to
14
00:00:43.560 --> 00:00:47.680
turn away from the golf ball like this so that your back is to the target.
15
00:00:47.680 --> 00:00:52.020
Now what we're going to do is we're going to pivot so that we face the target
16
00:00:52.020 --> 00:00:52.600
just like
17
00:00:52.600 --> 00:00:57.860
this and at the same time we're going to swing the club down so it finishes
18
00:00:57.860 --> 00:00:59.520
behind your back.
19
00:00:59.520 --> 00:01:04.090
So if I was doing it here so that you could see from this camera I'm going to
20
00:01:04.090 --> 00:01:04.720
turn and
21
00:01:04.720 --> 00:01:12.460
I'm going to swing down and finish well low and almost behind my back kind of
22
00:01:12.460 --> 00:01:13.320
like this.
23
00:01:13.320 --> 00:01:18.760
Now my brain is not going to let me actually do that when I'm trying to hit the
24
00:01:18.760 --> 00:01:19.740
golf ball,
25
00:01:19.740 --> 00:01:25.000
but that will have more of a feeling of the upper body being stacked on top
26
00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:26.160
instead of
27
00:01:26.160 --> 00:01:27.660
getting tilted behind.
28
00:01:27.660 --> 00:01:31.710
Stack centers is one of the real big keys for being a good bunker player and
29
00:01:31.710 --> 00:01:32.320
this will
30
00:01:32.320 --> 00:01:37.380
help with releasing the club down and left.
31
00:01:37.380 --> 00:01:42.640
That release down and left has a big impact on moving the low point far enough
32
00:01:42.640 --> 00:01:43.260
forward.
33
00:01:43.260 --> 00:01:46.980
Remember a lot of bad bunker players get this tilt low point behind the ball
34
00:01:46.980 --> 00:01:47.520
and kind of
35
00:01:47.520 --> 00:01:51.540
either blade or they make contact with the sand and chunk it.
36
00:01:51.540 --> 00:01:55.140
So we're going to try to combo that into one feeling where we do a complete
37
00:01:55.140 --> 00:01:55.820
opposite.
38
00:01:55.820 --> 00:01:59.620
You may chunk some of these, but you definitely shouldn't blade it.
39
00:01:59.620 --> 00:02:02.620
You might puzzle them, but you definitely shouldn't blade it.
40
00:02:02.620 --> 00:02:06.760
So you might have to use some down the line feedback to look at or draw the
41
00:02:06.760 --> 00:02:07.700
checkerboard
42
00:02:07.700 --> 00:02:11.060
so that you can see where your contact is.
43
00:02:11.060 --> 00:02:15.220
Okay, so now let's go through a little demonstration.
44
00:02:15.220 --> 00:02:19.240
We'll put our normal bunker lines, the two lines, one front, one behind.
45
00:02:19.240 --> 00:02:23.810
We're going to pick the club up on our shoulder, make a little turn, had a
46
00:02:23.810 --> 00:02:24.960
great sound, contact
47
00:02:24.960 --> 00:02:25.960
in in a good position.
48
00:02:25.960 --> 00:02:29.600
It's a little tricky to do as a ISO drill, but we'll do it anyway.
49
00:02:29.600 --> 00:02:32.890
So we're going to pick it up, we're going to turn and we're going to feel like
50
00:02:32.890 --> 00:02:33.500
we throw
51
00:02:33.500 --> 00:02:35.800
the club down and turn and finish there.
52
00:02:35.800 --> 00:02:40.180
Now my path got a little bit outside in, but the contact location and the depth
53
00:02:40.180 --> 00:02:40.820
was pretty
54
00:02:40.820 --> 00:02:41.820
good.
55
00:02:41.820 --> 00:02:46.110
I ended up hitting a nice shot, just a little bit more of a kind of a cut feel
56
00:02:46.110 --> 00:02:46.740
to it.
57
00:02:46.740 --> 00:02:52.570
So if I like that feel, then now I can hit some regular shots, trying to just
58
00:02:52.570 --> 00:02:53.180
make a
59
00:02:53.180 --> 00:02:57.470
normal backswing and feel a little bit more level or over the top with the
60
00:02:57.470 --> 00:02:58.420
shoulders.
61
00:02:58.420 --> 00:03:03.680
Again, this is primarily for golfers who get too tilted behind, too much axis
62
00:03:03.680 --> 00:03:03.900
tilt and
63
00:03:03.900 --> 00:03:09.380
that axis tilt is causing low point control as far as the location of where it
64
00:03:09.380 --> 00:03:09.980
enters
65
00:03:09.980 --> 00:03:14.260
the sand as well as the path on the way through.
66
00:03:14.260 --> 00:03:20.000
So let's try to do one where we're just feeling a little bit more of that wood
67
00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:21.260
chopper pivot
68
00:03:21.260 --> 00:03:24.740
idea.
69
00:03:24.740 --> 00:03:30.100
And it's really good for helping create speed as well as height.
70
00:03:30.100 --> 00:03:34.730
So this can be really helpful for getting the torso to turn and getting the
71
00:03:34.730 --> 00:03:35.260
arms to
72
00:03:35.260 --> 00:03:37.780
finish in that really good follow through position.
73
00:03:37.780 --> 00:03:40.250
So try that if you're getting a little bit too much axis tilt and that's
74
00:03:40.250 --> 00:03:40.860
messing up your
75
00:03:40.860 --> 00:03:45.980
contact with your bunker shots.
76
00:03:45.980 --> 00:03:47.220
Super high, really good.
