15-Yard Baseline

With all shots, it's helpful to have a reference. This is an easier way to develop touch and distance control. Since most greens are about a circle with a 30-yard diameter, and since the bunkers are typically close to the outside edges of the green a lot of your bunker shots will fit into the 15-20 yard range. This is one of the reasons why a short swing can cause problems. You'll have to speed it up too aggressively.
I recommend training a stock 15-20 yard shot, which is usually a swing that is about shoulder height on the backswing and follow-through.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.560
This distance bunker drill is 15-yard baseline. So as you know I'm a big fan of
2
00:00:10.560 --> 00:00:16.120
benchmarks or baselines that allow you to build feel off of kind of a stock or
3
00:00:16.120 --> 00:00:21.370
standard shot. With the bunker play I tend to aim for more of a 15-yard
4
00:00:21.370 --> 00:00:21.560
baseline
5
00:00:21.560 --> 00:00:26.700
15 up to 20 somewhere in that range. With chipping we did different length
6
00:00:26.700 --> 00:00:30.600
shots so we had kind of a 10 a 20 a 30 so we could cover a lot of different
7
00:00:30.600 --> 00:00:38.280
ground. Well with bunkers most greens are about 30-yard circle so if and the
8
00:00:38.280 --> 00:00:43.100
bunkers are just on the perimeter so typically if you can hit a 15 or 20
9
00:00:43.100 --> 00:00:46.800
yard shot that can get you close to the middle of the green from the majority
10
00:00:46.800 --> 00:00:46.960
of
11
00:00:46.960 --> 00:00:52.480
the bunkers you're gonna face. Then as you get better you can establish how to
12
00:00:52.480 --> 00:00:57.380
control distance a little bit better. The standard rule for bunkers for new
13
00:00:57.380 --> 00:01:02.660
golfers is first get out second get on third get close so we're gonna use this
14
00:01:02.660 --> 00:01:08.740
15-yard benchmark as a way to get out and on in one single step. So I've got
15
00:01:08.740 --> 00:01:12.980
some targets out there I've got a pool noodle the purple one is set at 15
16
00:01:12.980 --> 00:01:16.620
yards the blue one is 30 and then these two flags are about in between those so
17
00:01:16.620 --> 00:01:20.820
I've got the first one at the first flag I didn't set but the first flag is at
18
00:01:20.820 --> 00:01:27.080
about 10 paces from or 10 yards from here and then the second flag is about
19
00:01:27.080 --> 00:01:32.760
22 so not quite even but the purple flag the 15-yard benchmark is going to be
20
00:01:32.760 --> 00:01:32.920
my
21
00:01:32.920 --> 00:01:37.160
baseline or what I'm trying to target. In order to do that I'm pretty much
22
00:01:37.160 --> 00:01:37.320
gonna
23
00:01:37.320 --> 00:01:41.480
try to get the same contact the same speed and the same length of swing so I'm
24
00:01:41.480 --> 00:01:47.200
gonna try to standardize a bunker shot. For most golfers I like a bunker shot
25
00:01:47.200 --> 00:01:52.400
that goes up to about vertical in the backswing kind of your your nine o'clock
26
00:01:52.400 --> 00:01:56.140
swing in your distance wedges or your chest height swing in your distance
27
00:01:56.140 --> 00:02:02.700
wedges. So if I put a little bit of sand feedback here and we go vertical swing
28
00:02:02.700 --> 00:02:08.020
we're not going to try and swing really hard we're just gonna let gravity and
29
00:02:08.020 --> 00:02:12.340
kind of the fact that this is a heavy club help create the speed and take
30
00:02:12.340 --> 00:02:17.060
ourselves to a nice smooth finish. So we've got our our feedback station set up
31
00:02:17.060 --> 00:02:22.800
with our two lines and then we're gonna try and hit as many kind of shots as we
32
00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:27.920
can to the specific target. If we find that that's a too easy of a task then we
33
00:02:27.920 --> 00:02:31.940
can try and vary it a little bit hit a little bit past a little bit short right
34
00:02:31.940 --> 00:02:36.720
on it but we're gonna play around with this 15 yard benchmark or 15 yard
35
00:02:36.720 --> 00:02:43.720
baseline. Okay so standard technique butterfly grip set up a little bit on to
36
00:02:43.720 --> 00:02:54.640
that front foot up to vertical and that went about 10 so playing a little long
37
00:02:54.640 --> 00:03:01.280
today just kidding so we'll go I felt like that was a little short of my normal
38
00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:08.080
baseline so we'll go up a little bit bigger there we go and that hit the pole
39
00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:13.680
so there's my 15 yard baseline first couple swings of the day felt a little
40
00:03:13.680 --> 00:03:18.500
short so then I got closer to my full swing and that's my 15 yard baseline
41
00:03:18.500 --> 00:03:23.640
with my 58 degree wedge so I can play around with a little bit of variety but
42
00:03:23.640 --> 00:03:27.440
I challenge you to build one swing know how far it goes and that can be your
43
00:03:27.440 --> 00:03:31.600
stock bunker shot for controlling distance.
