Use the low point checkerboard to fix heel contact for your bunker shot

Monitoring contact location is an important skill for mastering your bunker game. Many golfers struggle with heel contact. Often times, these golfers think they are hitting it thin, but they are really hitting the ball on the hosel. To help you become aware of the sand location (toe to heel), use the checkerboard line instead of the traditional low-point lines.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.840
This is low point checker board.

2
00:00:07.840 --> 00:00:11.720
So if you're working on your low point and you're struggling with heel contact

3
00:00:11.720 --> 00:00:12.240
as well

4
00:00:12.240 --> 00:00:16.750
as fat thin shots, then I like the checker board approach where I'm not just

5
00:00:16.750 --> 00:00:17.400
going to

6
00:00:17.400 --> 00:00:21.840
draw the normal two lines in the bunker.

7
00:00:21.840 --> 00:00:26.460
What I'm going to do is I'm going to draw a line that's going to indicate kind

8
00:00:26.460 --> 00:00:26.920
of the

9
00:00:26.920 --> 00:00:28.640
bowling alley or the heel toe line.

10
00:00:28.640 --> 00:00:34.280
So what I end up with is I end up with more of a grid pattern here.

11
00:00:34.280 --> 00:00:38.640
So now what I can do is I can put the ball just in front of one of these low

12
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:39.720
point lines,

13
00:00:39.720 --> 00:00:44.160
but in the middle between two of these bowling alley lines.

14
00:00:44.160 --> 00:00:48.800
And really it doesn't matter where I put it, but I'm going to use the lines on

15
00:00:48.800 --> 00:00:49.460
the ground

16
00:00:49.460 --> 00:00:53.520
as a help as far as where I'm going heel toe.

17
00:00:53.520 --> 00:00:58.260
Because a lot of golfers who struggle in the bunker, what you'll see is if you

18
00:00:58.260 --> 00:00:59.120
're hitting

19
00:00:59.120 --> 00:01:02.080
it where you think you're hitting it thin, but you're actually hitting it on

20
00:01:02.080 --> 00:01:02.600
the heel,

21
00:01:02.600 --> 00:01:06.000
the low point will be hitting too far out.

22
00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:10.270
Occasionally you'll be coming so far outside in that you'll be hitting it off

23
00:01:10.270 --> 00:01:10.880
the toe,

24
00:01:10.880 --> 00:01:14.810
but this low point checker board will help you not only see where you're

25
00:01:14.810 --> 00:01:15.680
hitting it in

26
00:01:15.680 --> 00:01:21.270
terms of solid, low point like fat thin, but also heel toe, the location

27
00:01:21.270 --> 00:01:22.160
compared to the

28
00:01:22.160 --> 00:01:23.160
golf ball.

29
00:01:23.160 --> 00:01:27.560
So I'm going to set up here to one of these blank stations.

30
00:01:27.560 --> 00:01:32.560
So good little setup, little more knee squat.

31
00:01:32.560 --> 00:01:38.150
And then I'm going to make my bunker swing that contacted right in the middle

32
00:01:38.150 --> 00:01:38.640
of that

33
00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:39.960
checker square.

34
00:01:39.960 --> 00:01:41.640
So now I'm going to try to duplicate.

35
00:01:41.640 --> 00:01:46.320
So I'm going to set up to the golf ball with my normal bunker setup, normal

36
00:01:46.320 --> 00:01:47.800
bunker grip.

37
00:01:47.800 --> 00:01:52.620
And I'm just going to pay attention, caught that a little bit thin, but right

38
00:01:52.620 --> 00:01:53.920
in the middle

39
00:01:53.920 --> 00:01:56.840
of the checker board.

40
00:01:56.840 --> 00:02:02.840
So now we'll do another one, try to fix that thin contact, get a little bit fl

41
00:02:02.840 --> 00:02:06.240
atter deeper.

42
00:02:06.240 --> 00:02:08.040
That was pretty good there.

43
00:02:08.040 --> 00:02:11.010
And there we can see the low point was right in the middle of the checker board

44
00:02:11.010 --> 00:02:11.520
from the

45
00:02:11.520 --> 00:02:12.520
down the line.

46
00:02:12.520 --> 00:02:16.650
Now the good thing about the checker board is now I've got another line here I

47
00:02:16.650 --> 00:02:17.120
can just

48
00:02:17.120 --> 00:02:20.970
move back, and then I can draw another line and I can keep moving back a little

49
00:02:20.970 --> 00:02:21.440
bit.

50
00:02:21.440 --> 00:02:25.400
So I can be pretty effective with my sand management.

51
00:02:25.400 --> 00:02:29.970
But I find that this one can be really helpful if you're struggling with heel

52
00:02:29.970 --> 00:02:31.140
toe contact,

53
00:02:31.140 --> 00:02:36.730
not just where is the club entering the sand, where is the low point, but where

54
00:02:36.730 --> 00:02:37.400
is that kind

55
00:02:37.400 --> 00:02:39.680
of in this heel toe line.

56
00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:43.830
If you're struggling with too much heel toe contact, then you want to look at

57
00:02:43.830 --> 00:02:44.480
your weight

58
00:02:44.480 --> 00:02:48.700
distribution, like are you leaning too much into your toes, or standing up and

59
00:02:48.700 --> 00:02:49.240
leaning

60
00:02:49.240 --> 00:02:50.720
into the heels.

61
00:02:50.720 --> 00:02:56.880
And you want to look at the kind of hand path, am I releasing my arms way out

62
00:02:56.880 --> 00:02:57.680
away from where

63
00:02:57.680 --> 00:03:01.480
I started, or am I pulling in too much.

64
00:03:01.480 --> 00:03:07.000
Those are going to be the big influences on your heel toe contact.

65
00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:10.840
So do, and you can vary your different shots, you can do your chunk and run as

66
00:03:10.840 --> 00:03:11.400
well as your

67
00:03:11.400 --> 00:03:12.400
higher one.

68
00:03:12.400 --> 00:03:20.120
So we'll just do one more here using the checkerboard.

69
00:03:20.120 --> 00:03:22.080
So not too bad there.

70
00:03:22.080 --> 00:03:25.470
If anything on the heel or on the toe side of the club, that's a little bit

71
00:03:25.470 --> 00:03:26.040
safer.

72
00:03:26.040 --> 00:03:31.630
So use the checkerboard if you're struggling with contact, not just low point

73
00:03:31.630 --> 00:03:32.320
and where

74
00:03:32.320 --> 00:03:36.630
is the, or sorry, entry point and low point, but also where is that compared to

75
00:03:36.630 --> 00:03:37.200
the golf

76
00:03:37.200 --> 00:03:40.440
ball as far as heel toe.

77
00:03:40.440 --> 00:03:43.100
(air whooshing)
