Use a simple visual for helping dial in your club face position for better distance control
How open you position the club face for bunker shots can be a helpful regulator of distance. But some golfers have a hard time regulating it consistently. To help you, use where the leading edge is pointing, compared to your foot, as your reference. I recommend trying three different positions for the club face. Pointing at your heel, pointing at your toe, or pointing 6 inches in front of your toe.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.290
This is the bunker face clock, so in this video we're going to use the openness
2
00:00:10.290 --> 00:00:10.420
of
3
00:00:10.420 --> 00:00:14.800
the clubface in order to control distance rather than trying to change too many
4
00:00:14.800 --> 00:00:15.260
elements
5
00:00:15.260 --> 00:00:16.260
of our swing.
6
00:00:16.260 --> 00:00:20.660
We're really going to focus on changing the clubface to influence loft and
7
00:00:20.660 --> 00:00:21.540
distance.
8
00:00:21.540 --> 00:00:24.220
This can be really helpful if you're just more of a casual golfer, and let's
9
00:00:24.220 --> 00:00:24.540
say you
10
00:00:24.540 --> 00:00:28.180
have two different face positions that you use, your normal one, and then if
11
00:00:28.180 --> 00:00:28.660
you need
12
00:00:28.660 --> 00:00:30.300
to go shorter.
13
00:00:30.300 --> 00:00:34.640
So I'm going to draw a line in the sand, that's going to be kind of our target,
14
00:00:34.640 --> 00:00:35.220
and then I'm
15
00:00:35.220 --> 00:00:39.780
going to draw a line perpendicular, that's going to be just slightly ahead of
16
00:00:39.780 --> 00:00:40.820
ball position,
17
00:00:40.820 --> 00:00:45.270
and then we're going to draw that line behind it, kind of the low point line,
18
00:00:45.270 --> 00:00:45.940
and now I'm
19
00:00:45.940 --> 00:00:47.540
going to draw a few extra lines.
20
00:00:47.540 --> 00:00:52.240
This can be really helpful if you're more of a visual golfer, but I'm going to
21
00:00:52.240 --> 00:00:52.680
draw a
22
00:00:52.680 --> 00:00:56.220
line from the golf ball to my heel, so that would be just slightly open.
23
00:00:56.220 --> 00:01:01.350
I'm going to draw the line to my toe, that would be an additional 10 degrees
24
00:01:01.350 --> 00:01:01.660
open or
25
00:01:01.660 --> 00:01:06.450
so, and then I'm going to draw a line six or eight inches out in front of the
26
00:01:06.450 --> 00:01:07.020
toe.
27
00:01:07.020 --> 00:01:12.400
So from my perspective it looks like the line goes kind of like this, or if I
28
00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:13.020
was to match
29
00:01:13.020 --> 00:01:16.270
each one of those with the clubface, this would be square, that's not how I'm
30
00:01:16.270 --> 00:01:16.580
going
31
00:01:16.580 --> 00:01:21.240
to play a bunker shot, this would be pointed at my heel, this would be pointed
32
00:01:21.240 --> 00:01:22.020
at my toe,
33
00:01:22.020 --> 00:01:25.620
and then this would be pointed well outside my toe.
34
00:01:25.620 --> 00:01:30.180
Now if you're going to do this, you have to get used to this different visual
35
00:01:30.180 --> 00:01:30.780
because
36
00:01:30.780 --> 00:01:34.650
what will really spook you out is the club is going to look like it's wide open
37
00:01:34.650 --> 00:01:35.020
and you're
38
00:01:35.020 --> 00:01:39.000
going to think it's going to go way to the right, but the tendency is for the
39
00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:39.460
ball to
40
00:01:39.460 --> 00:01:42.640
follow more of the path of the club on this bunker shot rather than just where
41
00:01:42.640 --> 00:01:43.100
the face
42
00:01:43.100 --> 00:01:44.100
is pointing.
43
00:01:44.100 --> 00:01:47.780
So some experimentation can help you get a little bit more confidence with it.
44
00:01:47.780 --> 00:01:51.960
So we're going to use our basic stroke and then we're going to adjust the
45
00:01:51.960 --> 00:01:52.820
distance just
46
00:01:52.820 --> 00:01:55.940
by opening the clubface.
47
00:01:55.940 --> 00:02:01.660
Okay so a little demo here, so we're going to start with the heel line.
48
00:02:01.660 --> 00:02:07.030
You can play a club that's actually square but I don't do it very often so my
49
00:02:07.030 --> 00:02:07.140
square
50
00:02:07.140 --> 00:02:11.220
is pretty close to pointing at the heel or just a few degrees open.
51
00:02:11.220 --> 00:02:16.710
So now we're going to try and get a nice good bunker shot, bunker release, kind
52
00:02:16.710 --> 00:02:17.420
of our normal
53
00:02:17.420 --> 00:02:19.380
pattern.
54
00:02:19.380 --> 00:02:22.160
You can see I was actually closer to the toe so now I'll match that line, that
55
00:02:22.160 --> 00:02:22.540
's part
56
00:02:22.540 --> 00:02:26.670
of the beauty of having the line is then I don't totally have to rely on my
57
00:02:26.670 --> 00:02:27.180
feel.
58
00:02:27.180 --> 00:02:33.780
Okay so we've got the club matching the line and then that's going to dig a
59
00:02:33.780 --> 00:02:34.660
little bit
60
00:02:34.660 --> 00:02:39.420
more and it's going to come out a little bit lower and all just looked out.
61
00:02:39.420 --> 00:02:42.520
So it's going to come out a little bit lower, have a little bit more run than
62
00:02:42.520 --> 00:02:43.420
maybe my standard
63
00:02:43.420 --> 00:02:44.420
shot.
64
00:02:44.420 --> 00:02:48.680
My standard shot is probably closer to mid foot but again the most important
65
00:02:48.680 --> 00:02:49.420
thing here
66
00:02:49.420 --> 00:02:54.910
is just having some element of consistency so that you know what you're going
67
00:02:54.910 --> 00:02:55.380
to do to
68
00:02:55.380 --> 00:02:56.380
adjust it.
69
00:02:56.380 --> 00:03:00.370
So now I'm going to try to make as close to the same swing as I can but I'm
70
00:03:00.370 --> 00:03:01.020
going to
71
00:03:01.020 --> 00:03:05.690
open the club face an additional 10 degrees or so so it points at my toe
72
00:03:05.690 --> 00:03:06.620
instead of at
73
00:03:06.620 --> 00:03:08.540
my heel.
74
00:03:08.540 --> 00:03:13.300
So now we've got the line where it's matching that line pointing at my toe, we
75
00:03:13.300 --> 00:03:13.940
'll see if
76
00:03:13.940 --> 00:03:20.420
we can get similar swing, similar stroke, similar.
77
00:03:20.420 --> 00:03:24.990
And so that goes a little bit higher, I might have swung a little bit harder,
78
00:03:24.990 --> 00:03:25.500
it looked
79
00:03:25.500 --> 00:03:29.060
like it went a little bit further in the air but had potentially a little bit
80
00:03:29.060 --> 00:03:29.860
more grab.
81
00:03:29.860 --> 00:03:35.240
I would say close to the same shot there but again I think that's closer to my
82
00:03:35.240 --> 00:03:35.540
default
83
00:03:35.540 --> 00:03:39.840
shot where the club face a little bit more square that's kind of closer to what
84
00:03:39.840 --> 00:03:40.340
I would
85
00:03:40.340 --> 00:03:42.340
do for a chunk and run.
86
00:03:42.340 --> 00:03:48.820
Okay so now the grid gets messy pretty quickly so you have to kind of use the
87
00:03:48.820 --> 00:03:49.740
visuals as
88
00:03:49.740 --> 00:03:52.990
a guide either that or take the time to redraw it but now I'm really going to
89
00:03:52.990 --> 00:03:53.700
open the club
90
00:03:53.700 --> 00:03:59.080
face so it's going to be pointing a good 6-8 inches out past the toe kind of
91
00:03:59.080 --> 00:03:59.700
like this.
92
00:03:59.700 --> 00:04:03.130
Now I'm going to try, my subconscious is going to want to swing harder, I'm
93
00:04:03.130 --> 00:04:05.700
going to try and
94
00:04:05.700 --> 00:04:12.540
make the same swing I made on the last one as best I can.
95
00:04:12.540 --> 00:04:18.220
And that's a great example where that came up a good 8-10 yard shorter.
96
00:04:18.220 --> 00:04:22.140
Now potentially I could say hey that was pretty cool but let's see if we can
97
00:04:22.140 --> 00:04:22.740
push it
98
00:04:22.740 --> 00:04:26.680
even one notch further and eventually you'll get to an upper limit where the
99
00:04:26.680 --> 00:04:27.260
club face
100
00:04:27.260 --> 00:04:30.720
is like 90 degrees and you're going to feel like there's no way you could hit
101
00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:31.060
it.
102
00:04:31.060 --> 00:04:36.440
So on this one I'm going to try and add maybe another half click right so
103
00:04:36.440 --> 00:04:37.180
instead of going
104
00:04:37.180 --> 00:04:42.590
10 I've got this probably out here you'll see on the camera it's pretty much
105
00:04:42.590 --> 00:04:43.340
pointing
106
00:04:43.340 --> 00:04:48.930
close to you but not quite, it's not quite 90 degrees it's pointing way out in
107
00:04:48.930 --> 00:04:49.460
front
108
00:04:49.460 --> 00:04:54.580
of my big toe let's see if this just barely clears the bunker I'm going to set
109
00:04:54.580 --> 00:04:55.260
up a little
110
00:04:55.260 --> 00:04:57.940
bit and this might go just a touch more right.
111
00:04:57.940 --> 00:05:05.340
Alright so there we go, good butterfly grip, yeah it's the danger of that let's
112
00:05:05.340 --> 00:05:06.100
try one
113
00:05:06.100 --> 00:05:09.580
more of those risky ones.
114
00:05:09.580 --> 00:05:14.270
I was a little uncomfortable over that shot and that can happen alright so we
115
00:05:14.270 --> 00:05:14.780
've got
116
00:05:14.780 --> 00:05:19.310
club face pretty much laying flat and normally I would aim a little bit more
117
00:05:19.310 --> 00:05:20.140
left but for
118
00:05:20.140 --> 00:05:23.520
the sake of this video I'm trying to keep my alignment and everything square so
119
00:05:23.520 --> 00:05:23.820
this
120
00:05:23.820 --> 00:05:29.310
might potentially go just a touch more right let's see if we can make a similar
121
00:05:29.310 --> 00:05:29.880
stroke
122
00:05:29.880 --> 00:05:31.460
there we go.
123
00:05:31.460 --> 00:05:36.160
So that one compared to the one that was you know we could number these my toe
124
00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:36.620
might
125
00:05:36.620 --> 00:05:40.820
be my first position compared to the second position that went about half the
126
00:05:40.820 --> 00:05:41.420
distance
127
00:05:41.420 --> 00:05:46.120
so I was able to regulate or take off some of the distance just by playing with
128
00:05:46.120 --> 00:05:46.580
the club
129
00:05:46.580 --> 00:05:48.980
face and they didn't have to change my stroke a lot.
130
00:05:48.980 --> 00:05:51.470
Now you're going to have to practice that so that you get comfortable at the
131
00:05:51.470 --> 00:05:51.900
different
132
00:05:51.900 --> 00:05:57.040
looks of the club face being a little bit open and you'll figure out where the
133
00:05:57.040 --> 00:05:57.220
upper
134
00:05:57.220 --> 00:06:00.690
limit is and just never go past there so if you're struggling with distance
135
00:06:00.690 --> 00:06:01.180
control
136
00:06:01.180 --> 00:06:05.940
or you just want another option this can be an easy way for you to use the same
137
00:06:05.940 --> 00:06:06.380
club
138
00:06:06.380 --> 00:06:11.340
but take off some of the distance just by opening the face.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.290
This is the bunker face clock, so in this video we're going to use the openness
2
00:00:10.290 --> 00:00:10.420
of
3
00:00:10.420 --> 00:00:14.800
the clubface in order to control distance rather than trying to change too many
4
00:00:14.800 --> 00:00:15.260
elements
5
00:00:15.260 --> 00:00:16.260
of our swing.
6
00:00:16.260 --> 00:00:20.660
We're really going to focus on changing the clubface to influence loft and
7
00:00:20.660 --> 00:00:21.540
distance.
8
00:00:21.540 --> 00:00:24.220
This can be really helpful if you're just more of a casual golfer, and let's
9
00:00:24.220 --> 00:00:24.540
say you
10
00:00:24.540 --> 00:00:28.180
have two different face positions that you use, your normal one, and then if
11
00:00:28.180 --> 00:00:28.660
you need
12
00:00:28.660 --> 00:00:30.300
to go shorter.
13
00:00:30.300 --> 00:00:34.640
So I'm going to draw a line in the sand, that's going to be kind of our target,
14
00:00:34.640 --> 00:00:35.220
and then I'm
15
00:00:35.220 --> 00:00:39.780
going to draw a line perpendicular, that's going to be just slightly ahead of
16
00:00:39.780 --> 00:00:40.820
ball position,
17
00:00:40.820 --> 00:00:45.270
and then we're going to draw that line behind it, kind of the low point line,
18
00:00:45.270 --> 00:00:45.940
and now I'm
19
00:00:45.940 --> 00:00:47.540
going to draw a few extra lines.
20
00:00:47.540 --> 00:00:52.240
This can be really helpful if you're more of a visual golfer, but I'm going to
21
00:00:52.240 --> 00:00:52.680
draw a
22
00:00:52.680 --> 00:00:56.220
line from the golf ball to my heel, so that would be just slightly open.
23
00:00:56.220 --> 00:01:01.350
I'm going to draw the line to my toe, that would be an additional 10 degrees
24
00:01:01.350 --> 00:01:01.660
open or
25
00:01:01.660 --> 00:01:06.450
so, and then I'm going to draw a line six or eight inches out in front of the
26
00:01:06.450 --> 00:01:07.020
toe.
27
00:01:07.020 --> 00:01:12.400
So from my perspective it looks like the line goes kind of like this, or if I
28
00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:13.020
was to match
29
00:01:13.020 --> 00:01:16.270
each one of those with the clubface, this would be square, that's not how I'm
30
00:01:16.270 --> 00:01:16.580
going
31
00:01:16.580 --> 00:01:21.240
to play a bunker shot, this would be pointed at my heel, this would be pointed
32
00:01:21.240 --> 00:01:22.020
at my toe,
33
00:01:22.020 --> 00:01:25.620
and then this would be pointed well outside my toe.
34
00:01:25.620 --> 00:01:30.180
Now if you're going to do this, you have to get used to this different visual
35
00:01:30.180 --> 00:01:30.780
because
36
00:01:30.780 --> 00:01:34.650
what will really spook you out is the club is going to look like it's wide open
37
00:01:34.650 --> 00:01:35.020
and you're
38
00:01:35.020 --> 00:01:39.000
going to think it's going to go way to the right, but the tendency is for the
39
00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:39.460
ball to
40
00:01:39.460 --> 00:01:42.640
follow more of the path of the club on this bunker shot rather than just where
41
00:01:42.640 --> 00:01:43.100
the face
42
00:01:43.100 --> 00:01:44.100
is pointing.
43
00:01:44.100 --> 00:01:47.780
So some experimentation can help you get a little bit more confidence with it.
44
00:01:47.780 --> 00:01:51.960
So we're going to use our basic stroke and then we're going to adjust the
45
00:01:51.960 --> 00:01:52.820
distance just
46
00:01:52.820 --> 00:01:55.940
by opening the clubface.
47
00:01:55.940 --> 00:02:01.660
Okay so a little demo here, so we're going to start with the heel line.
48
00:02:01.660 --> 00:02:07.030
You can play a club that's actually square but I don't do it very often so my
49
00:02:07.030 --> 00:02:07.140
square
50
00:02:07.140 --> 00:02:11.220
is pretty close to pointing at the heel or just a few degrees open.
51
00:02:11.220 --> 00:02:16.710
So now we're going to try and get a nice good bunker shot, bunker release, kind
52
00:02:16.710 --> 00:02:17.420
of our normal
53
00:02:17.420 --> 00:02:19.380
pattern.
54
00:02:19.380 --> 00:02:22.160
You can see I was actually closer to the toe so now I'll match that line, that
55
00:02:22.160 --> 00:02:22.540
's part
56
00:02:22.540 --> 00:02:26.670
of the beauty of having the line is then I don't totally have to rely on my
57
00:02:26.670 --> 00:02:27.180
feel.
58
00:02:27.180 --> 00:02:33.780
Okay so we've got the club matching the line and then that's going to dig a
59
00:02:33.780 --> 00:02:34.660
little bit
60
00:02:34.660 --> 00:02:39.420
more and it's going to come out a little bit lower and all just looked out.
61
00:02:39.420 --> 00:02:42.520
So it's going to come out a little bit lower, have a little bit more run than
62
00:02:42.520 --> 00:02:43.420
maybe my standard
63
00:02:43.420 --> 00:02:44.420
shot.
64
00:02:44.420 --> 00:02:48.680
My standard shot is probably closer to mid foot but again the most important
65
00:02:48.680 --> 00:02:49.420
thing here
66
00:02:49.420 --> 00:02:54.910
is just having some element of consistency so that you know what you're going
67
00:02:54.910 --> 00:02:55.380
to do to
68
00:02:55.380 --> 00:02:56.380
adjust it.
69
00:02:56.380 --> 00:03:00.370
So now I'm going to try to make as close to the same swing as I can but I'm
70
00:03:00.370 --> 00:03:01.020
going to
71
00:03:01.020 --> 00:03:05.690
open the club face an additional 10 degrees or so so it points at my toe
72
00:03:05.690 --> 00:03:06.620
instead of at
73
00:03:06.620 --> 00:03:08.540
my heel.
74
00:03:08.540 --> 00:03:13.300
So now we've got the line where it's matching that line pointing at my toe, we
75
00:03:13.300 --> 00:03:13.940
'll see if
76
00:03:13.940 --> 00:03:20.420
we can get similar swing, similar stroke, similar.
77
00:03:20.420 --> 00:03:24.990
And so that goes a little bit higher, I might have swung a little bit harder,
78
00:03:24.990 --> 00:03:25.500
it looked
79
00:03:25.500 --> 00:03:29.060
like it went a little bit further in the air but had potentially a little bit
80
00:03:29.060 --> 00:03:29.860
more grab.
81
00:03:29.860 --> 00:03:35.240
I would say close to the same shot there but again I think that's closer to my
82
00:03:35.240 --> 00:03:35.540
default
83
00:03:35.540 --> 00:03:39.840
shot where the club face a little bit more square that's kind of closer to what
84
00:03:39.840 --> 00:03:40.340
I would
85
00:03:40.340 --> 00:03:42.340
do for a chunk and run.
86
00:03:42.340 --> 00:03:48.820
Okay so now the grid gets messy pretty quickly so you have to kind of use the
87
00:03:48.820 --> 00:03:49.740
visuals as
88
00:03:49.740 --> 00:03:52.990
a guide either that or take the time to redraw it but now I'm really going to
89
00:03:52.990 --> 00:03:53.700
open the club
90
00:03:53.700 --> 00:03:59.080
face so it's going to be pointing a good 6-8 inches out past the toe kind of
91
00:03:59.080 --> 00:03:59.700
like this.
92
00:03:59.700 --> 00:04:03.130
Now I'm going to try, my subconscious is going to want to swing harder, I'm
93
00:04:03.130 --> 00:04:05.700
going to try and
94
00:04:05.700 --> 00:04:12.540
make the same swing I made on the last one as best I can.
95
00:04:12.540 --> 00:04:18.220
And that's a great example where that came up a good 8-10 yard shorter.
96
00:04:18.220 --> 00:04:22.140
Now potentially I could say hey that was pretty cool but let's see if we can
97
00:04:22.140 --> 00:04:22.740
push it
98
00:04:22.740 --> 00:04:26.680
even one notch further and eventually you'll get to an upper limit where the
99
00:04:26.680 --> 00:04:27.260
club face
100
00:04:27.260 --> 00:04:30.720
is like 90 degrees and you're going to feel like there's no way you could hit
101
00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:31.060
it.
102
00:04:31.060 --> 00:04:36.440
So on this one I'm going to try and add maybe another half click right so
103
00:04:36.440 --> 00:04:37.180
instead of going
104
00:04:37.180 --> 00:04:42.590
10 I've got this probably out here you'll see on the camera it's pretty much
105
00:04:42.590 --> 00:04:43.340
pointing
106
00:04:43.340 --> 00:04:48.930
close to you but not quite, it's not quite 90 degrees it's pointing way out in
107
00:04:48.930 --> 00:04:49.460
front
108
00:04:49.460 --> 00:04:54.580
of my big toe let's see if this just barely clears the bunker I'm going to set
109
00:04:54.580 --> 00:04:55.260
up a little
110
00:04:55.260 --> 00:04:57.940
bit and this might go just a touch more right.
111
00:04:57.940 --> 00:05:05.340
Alright so there we go, good butterfly grip, yeah it's the danger of that let's
112
00:05:05.340 --> 00:05:06.100
try one
113
00:05:06.100 --> 00:05:09.580
more of those risky ones.
114
00:05:09.580 --> 00:05:14.270
I was a little uncomfortable over that shot and that can happen alright so we
115
00:05:14.270 --> 00:05:14.780
've got
116
00:05:14.780 --> 00:05:19.310
club face pretty much laying flat and normally I would aim a little bit more
117
00:05:19.310 --> 00:05:20.140
left but for
118
00:05:20.140 --> 00:05:23.520
the sake of this video I'm trying to keep my alignment and everything square so
119
00:05:23.520 --> 00:05:23.820
this
120
00:05:23.820 --> 00:05:29.310
might potentially go just a touch more right let's see if we can make a similar
121
00:05:29.310 --> 00:05:29.880
stroke
122
00:05:29.880 --> 00:05:31.460
there we go.
123
00:05:31.460 --> 00:05:36.160
So that one compared to the one that was you know we could number these my toe
124
00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:36.620
might
125
00:05:36.620 --> 00:05:40.820
be my first position compared to the second position that went about half the
126
00:05:40.820 --> 00:05:41.420
distance
127
00:05:41.420 --> 00:05:46.120
so I was able to regulate or take off some of the distance just by playing with
128
00:05:46.120 --> 00:05:46.580
the club
129
00:05:46.580 --> 00:05:48.980
face and they didn't have to change my stroke a lot.
130
00:05:48.980 --> 00:05:51.470
Now you're going to have to practice that so that you get comfortable at the
131
00:05:51.470 --> 00:05:51.900
different
132
00:05:51.900 --> 00:05:57.040
looks of the club face being a little bit open and you'll figure out where the
133
00:05:57.040 --> 00:05:57.220
upper
134
00:05:57.220 --> 00:06:00.690
limit is and just never go past there so if you're struggling with distance
135
00:06:00.690 --> 00:06:01.180
control
136
00:06:01.180 --> 00:06:05.940
or you just want another option this can be an easy way for you to use the same
137
00:06:05.940 --> 00:06:06.380
club
138
00:06:06.380 --> 00:06:11.340
but take off some of the distance just by opening the face.
