Controlling trajectory is especially useful for high launching shots to help clear high-lipped greenside bunkers

Understanding how to control trajectory can help with multiple shots around the green. But typically, the shot that most students need to learn is how to launch the ball higher to help the ball clear high lipped greenside bunker or to get the ball to stop quickly on downslopes. But controlling trajectory can also help with longer shots where you want the ball to come out a little flatter, and travel further, without having to add a lot of extra force.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.300
All right, golfers, welcome back.

2
00:00:07.300 --> 00:00:11.960
In this video, we're going to cover how to influence trajectory for your stock

3
00:00:11.960 --> 00:00:12.360
bunker

4
00:00:12.360 --> 00:00:13.360
shot.

5
00:00:13.360 --> 00:00:18.120
So influencing trajectory is a little bit riskier than just influencing

6
00:00:18.120 --> 00:00:19.700
distance, because you

7
00:00:19.700 --> 00:00:23.210
have to play around with either the loft, the contact location, or the angle of

8
00:00:23.210 --> 00:00:23.760
attack.

9
00:00:23.760 --> 00:00:27.630
Ideally, you're building kind of one standard where the club contacts the sand

10
00:00:27.630 --> 00:00:28.440
and how deep

11
00:00:28.440 --> 00:00:33.800
it goes, but we have to influence those variables to control trajectory.

12
00:00:33.800 --> 00:00:38.350
The big one is going to be the face openness versus close, combining that with

13
00:00:38.350 --> 00:00:38.960
the angle

14
00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:40.620
of attack.

15
00:00:40.620 --> 00:00:42.400
We can influence that with the ball position.

16
00:00:42.400 --> 00:00:45.790
We can play around with, if we want it to come out a little bit lower, it's

17
00:00:45.790 --> 00:00:46.280
risky to

18
00:00:46.280 --> 00:00:49.840
put the ball too far back, that can encourage some tilt.

19
00:00:49.840 --> 00:00:55.140
But if we say our normal shot is kind of close to the heel, we might be able to

20
00:00:55.140 --> 00:00:55.640
move the

21
00:00:55.640 --> 00:01:00.780
ball back four inches or so up to four inches, and we can move the ball forward

22
00:01:00.780 --> 00:01:01.960
just slightly,

23
00:01:01.960 --> 00:01:07.380
maybe an inch or two, to influence some of the club face angle, which will help

24
00:01:07.380 --> 00:01:08.000
us with

25
00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:10.160
trajectory.

26
00:01:10.160 --> 00:01:16.380
Contact location, we can get closer to the golf ball to help it go up, and we

27
00:01:16.380 --> 00:01:17.160
can move

28
00:01:17.160 --> 00:01:19.480
further away to help it go down.

29
00:01:19.480 --> 00:01:25.380
By moving further back, you'll tend to have almost more of a coming up into the

30
00:01:25.380 --> 00:01:25.720
ball,

31
00:01:25.720 --> 00:01:30.100
which tends to launch the ball a little bit lower, believe it or not, because

32
00:01:30.100 --> 00:01:31.000
you'll tend

33
00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:35.400
to, as it's coming up, the club face will have a tendency to shot a little bit,

34
00:01:35.400 --> 00:01:35.920
where

35
00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:41.760
when you're coming down into it, it's easier to keep the club face open.

36
00:01:41.760 --> 00:01:47.660
Release styles, if you get really risky, you can work on creating a little bit

37
00:01:47.660 --> 00:01:48.680
more extension

38
00:01:48.680 --> 00:01:52.720
than normal to really open the club face, and then remember, whenever you have

39
00:01:52.720 --> 00:01:53.240
a really

40
00:01:53.240 --> 00:01:57.520
open club face, you're going to have to have a lot more speed.

41
00:01:57.520 --> 00:02:01.450
When you're hitting out a fluffy sand versus firm sand, you actually use the

42
00:02:01.450 --> 00:02:02.680
opposite strategies

43
00:02:02.680 --> 00:02:03.680
to hit the high shot.

44
00:02:03.680 --> 00:02:07.880
With the fluffy sand, you have to get nice and shallow in order to hit the high

45
00:02:07.880 --> 00:02:08.320
shot.

46
00:02:08.320 --> 00:02:13.490
If you get steep, you'll tend to hit it too high on the club, or you'll tend to

47
00:02:13.490 --> 00:02:14.000
get too

48
00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:19.140
much depth, tends to come out low, so we want to be even more skimmy when the

49
00:02:19.140 --> 00:02:20.640
sand is fluffy.

50
00:02:20.640 --> 00:02:26.540
When the sand is firm, then you can get more aggressive with your steepening

51
00:02:26.540 --> 00:02:26.920
actions and

52
00:02:26.920 --> 00:02:32.060
really come down into the golf ball as long as you're keeping the club face

53
00:02:32.060 --> 00:02:32.840
more open,

54
00:02:32.840 --> 00:02:36.200
keeping the loft of the club.

55
00:02:36.200 --> 00:02:40.980
If we're trying to get high launch with the fluffy sand, it's going to come in

56
00:02:40.980 --> 00:02:41.720
more like

57
00:02:41.720 --> 00:02:47.480
this, and with the firm sand, it's going to come in more like that.

58
00:02:47.480 --> 00:02:50.910
We've got some drills to help us again refine our setup routine as it release

59
00:02:50.910 --> 00:02:52.000
the trajectory,

60
00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:58.380
but also working on club face play and release styles in order to try to mess

61
00:02:58.380 --> 00:02:59.520
around with

62
00:02:59.520 --> 00:03:00.520
trajectory.

63
00:03:00.520 --> 00:03:03.490
With all of these shots, though, you do want to be careful about getting too

64
00:03:03.490 --> 00:03:03.960
much tilt

65
00:03:03.960 --> 00:03:09.100
that can really disrupt your contact location, which is going to tend to have a

66
00:03:09.100 --> 00:03:10.120
bigger impact

67
00:03:10.120 --> 00:03:11.200
on your trajectory.

68
00:03:11.200 --> 00:03:16.340
Make sure those first two, your standard and your ability control distance are

69
00:03:16.340 --> 00:03:16.960
relatively

70
00:03:16.960 --> 00:03:19.820
under control before you start trying to worry too much about controlling

71
00:03:19.820 --> 00:03:20.480
trajectory.
