The steeps and shallows balance in the bunker are different than the full swing

The "steeps & shallows" balance is a bit different for a bunker shot than it is for a full swing. Players who struggle with bunker play will often default to their full-swing "balance" by mistake. Therefore, it is important to make the following adjustments when stepping into the sand:

Setup:

  • Stand taller at address with less torso side-bend.
  • Place your nose on top of the ball and more weight on the lead side.
  • Play the ball more forward.

Backswing & Release:

  • Allow the clubhead to pass the hands.
  • Return the shaft to vertical at impact.
  • Create a "narrow" backswing.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.220
This concept video is balancing the steeps and shallows in a bunker swing. So

2
00:00:05.220 --> 00:00:08.710
the steeps and shallow balance is a little bit different in a bunker shot than

3
00:00:08.710 --> 00:00:08.760
it

4
00:00:08.760 --> 00:00:13.720
is for your full swing. With your full swing the body's a little bit lower and

5
00:00:13.720 --> 00:00:17.010
more open those are both steep so it's got the side bend to balance it out.

6
00:00:17.010 --> 00:00:17.200
That

7
00:00:17.200 --> 00:00:21.400
puts your upper body behind the ball and then your arms are going to be

8
00:00:21.400 --> 00:00:26.570
straightening and retaining the leg. So the straightening helps shallow,

9
00:00:26.570 --> 00:00:27.080
retaining

10
00:00:27.080 --> 00:00:31.280
the leg kind of steepens. You'll notice that you've got a blend of steeps and

11
00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:37.040
shallows on each one. With the bunker shot we're trying to have the shaft come

12
00:00:37.040 --> 00:00:40.720
back to pretty much neutral at impact and the bottom of the swing while it's

13
00:00:40.720 --> 00:00:44.160
ahead of the golf ball the club had passes very quickly so it's got more of a

14
00:00:44.160 --> 00:00:50.760
circular shape to it. Now we want to be narrow so that we can have the club

15
00:00:50.760 --> 00:00:51.080
going

16
00:00:51.080 --> 00:00:56.840
down into the sand but we also want to be flat. So to do that we do a couple

17
00:00:56.840 --> 00:00:59.840
different things with our setup position. We're gonna play the ball more

18
00:00:59.840 --> 00:01:00.320
forward

19
00:01:00.320 --> 00:01:04.600
which helps shallow things out and we're gonna sit more vertically which helps

20
00:01:04.600 --> 00:01:08.520
shallow things out but then we're also going to get our shoulders more level

21
00:01:08.520 --> 00:01:08.720
and

22
00:01:08.720 --> 00:01:13.280
our nose on top of the ball by leaning more into our left quad. So that

23
00:01:13.280 --> 00:01:19.360
combination steepens things back out and produce a flatter swing but allow me

24
00:01:19.360 --> 00:01:19.480
to

25
00:01:19.480 --> 00:01:26.880
get pretty narrow. The arms are going to work on more of a narrow path in the

26
00:01:26.880 --> 00:01:32.040
backswing as then they're gonna be pretty close to me but I'm going to release

27
00:01:32.040 --> 00:01:36.160
that narrowness down at the bottom because it's very much a right arm or

28
00:01:36.160 --> 00:01:41.360
right-handed shot and that shallows things back out. So the big thing is I'm

29
00:01:41.360 --> 00:01:46.200
a little bit more left in my setup and then I'm a little bit earlier with my

30
00:01:46.200 --> 00:01:50.480
arm throw. The body position helps me control the bottom of the swing being

31
00:01:50.480 --> 00:01:54.280
in front of the golf ball and the arm throw helps me keep the face from

32
00:01:54.280 --> 00:02:01.520
rotating and use the bounce properly so that I can get a relatively long flat

33
00:02:01.520 --> 00:02:06.560
bottom of the swing and keep the loft on the club so that I can pop it up in

34
00:02:06.560 --> 00:02:12.200
the air. So we'll demonstrate that steep and shallow, get in that left quad,

35
00:02:12.200 --> 00:02:12.960
narrow

36
00:02:12.960 --> 00:02:17.440
during the backswing but on a flatter path because it's a little bit more

37
00:02:17.440 --> 00:02:21.600
around kind of like so.

38
00:02:21.600 --> 00:02:31.080
Now most of the time if you struggle with bunkers I'd say 80% of the time it's

39
00:02:31.080 --> 00:02:33.920
because you get too shallow and the shallowness will either come from

40
00:02:33.920 --> 00:02:39.240
setting up too far behind the golf ball or swinging the arms too wide early in

41
00:02:39.240 --> 00:02:43.040
the downswing and then coming up into the golf ball like that. All of those are

42
00:02:43.040 --> 00:02:48.920
shallows. It is possible there are some golfers who struggle with getting a

43
00:02:48.920 --> 00:02:54.090
little bit too steep and the golfers who tend to get too steep typically have

44
00:02:54.090 --> 00:02:54.240
too

45
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:59.840
much of a spin and they'll really cut across the ball. So they'll tend to

46
00:02:59.840 --> 00:03:06.120
shank it, toe shank it and they'll tend to blade more than chunk shots. So if

47
00:03:06.120 --> 00:03:06.360
you

48
00:03:06.360 --> 00:03:10.240
find that you fall into one of those patterns look on video and see which you

49
00:03:10.240 --> 00:03:18.040
need to balance but overall the body is steep by being on top but shallow by

50
00:03:18.040 --> 00:03:23.640
being more vertical and the arms are shallow by getting thrown early but

51
00:03:23.640 --> 00:03:27.770
steep because they're coming from a more narrow position not a wide position

52
00:03:27.770 --> 00:03:28.160
like

53
00:03:28.160 --> 00:03:30.360
so.
