A simple visual to help you control the depth of your bunker shots
Many golfers set up for their bunker shots exactly the same as their regular shots. This challenges sand contact control. To compliment your set up with a more vertical spine angle, aim for a set up with your hands hanging under your hat. This feeling of reaching for the ball a little bit more will help improve your radius control and your ability to control the depth of your divot.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.120
This drill is hands under your hat.
2
00:00:08.120 --> 00:00:13.550
So one common issue that I'll see with poor bunker players is standing too
3
00:00:13.550 --> 00:00:14.300
close to the
4
00:00:14.300 --> 00:00:17.120
ball or getting the hands too close to your body.
5
00:00:17.120 --> 00:00:18.480
In fact, I think it's a common one.
6
00:00:18.480 --> 00:00:21.880
I can fall into it a little bit, especially if you haven't been practicing them
7
00:00:21.880 --> 00:00:22.120
in a
8
00:00:22.120 --> 00:00:23.120
while.
9
00:00:23.120 --> 00:00:28.600
Good bunker players tend to have more of this vertical posture and their arms
10
00:00:28.600 --> 00:00:29.720
further away.
11
00:00:29.720 --> 00:00:35.240
That helps control the depth of the swing as well as the contact location.
12
00:00:35.240 --> 00:00:38.860
So a simple cue that I'll give people is if you were to drop the club from
13
00:00:38.860 --> 00:00:39.560
underneath
14
00:00:39.560 --> 00:00:47.080
your hat, I want your hands from the down the line camera angle to be closer to
15
00:00:47.080 --> 00:00:47.720
in line with
16
00:00:47.720 --> 00:00:52.000
that vertical line as opposed to straight underneath the shoulders.
17
00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:56.910
Because I've tilted with my setup posture being a little bit more vertical, it
18
00:00:56.910 --> 00:00:57.520
's often
19
00:00:57.520 --> 00:00:59.700
going to feel like I'm reaching.
20
00:00:59.700 --> 00:01:03.050
So I'll often have golfers kind of exaggerate, almost reaching as far as you
21
00:01:03.050 --> 00:01:03.720
can, trying
22
00:01:03.720 --> 00:01:08.960
to create just this straight line so that there the hands would be from the
23
00:01:08.960 --> 00:01:09.360
down the
24
00:01:09.360 --> 00:01:10.680
line under the hat.
25
00:01:10.680 --> 00:01:14.580
Or if normally you have about a hands width with your regular swing, I'll ask
26
00:01:14.580 --> 00:01:15.160
for about
27
00:01:15.160 --> 00:01:23.480
two hands widths between your belt buckle and the handle, kind of like this.
28
00:01:23.480 --> 00:01:28.720
So it's mostly a setup and a kind of an impact or visual cue, occasionally I'll
29
00:01:28.720 --> 00:01:29.600
take a alignment
30
00:01:29.600 --> 00:01:35.000
stick and put it far enough back so that they won't actually hit it.
31
00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:39.410
But I'll drop kind of that vertical line here and I'll say, okay, don't let
32
00:01:39.410 --> 00:01:40.200
your hands
33
00:01:40.200 --> 00:01:42.040
get any closer in there.
34
00:01:42.040 --> 00:01:47.530
You'll see if I were to pull these arms down, I hit a good shot on that one,
35
00:01:47.530 --> 00:01:48.480
especially
36
00:01:48.480 --> 00:01:55.130
because the sand is a little bit wet and firm, but I could feel how that would
37
00:01:55.130 --> 00:01:55.960
run the risk
38
00:01:55.960 --> 00:01:59.440
and have the potential of getting a little bit more diggy.
39
00:01:59.440 --> 00:02:06.280
So if I have a little bit more kind of width, I got a little close.
40
00:02:06.280 --> 00:02:11.620
It'll feel like I can't, I'll have a hard time getting the club too deep.
41
00:02:11.620 --> 00:02:17.120
This is really one of the ways to really help control depth.
42
00:02:17.120 --> 00:02:21.280
That was a little bit better as I'm getting warmed up, that it really helps
43
00:02:21.280 --> 00:02:22.400
control depth.
44
00:02:22.400 --> 00:02:26.090
I find that this is even more important if you're playing out of really fluffy
45
00:02:26.090 --> 00:02:26.640
sand.
46
00:02:26.640 --> 00:02:30.720
If you're in firm sand, you can get a little bit closer to hit more down into
47
00:02:30.720 --> 00:02:31.700
it, but fluffy
48
00:02:31.700 --> 00:02:34.690
sand and your general bunker shot, you want to feel like you're reaching or
49
00:02:34.690 --> 00:02:35.240
that your
50
00:02:35.240 --> 00:02:39.770
hands are a little bit wider or more up, pretty much forming almost the
51
00:02:39.770 --> 00:02:41.960
straight line at impact
52
00:02:41.960 --> 00:02:44.560
between the shoulder and the golf ball.
53
00:02:44.560 --> 00:02:49.070
When you do that, it'll really help with your consistency of sand contact, not
54
00:02:49.070 --> 00:02:49.680
just the
55
00:02:49.680 --> 00:02:54.080
location as far as behind the ball or in front of the ball, but the depth.
56
00:02:54.080 --> 00:02:59.240
This is one of the really big critical regulators for controlling depth in your
57
00:02:59.240 --> 00:02:59.960
bunker shots.
58
00:02:59.960 --> 00:03:05.920
So if I get further away kind of like that, I can really slide the golf club
59
00:03:05.920 --> 00:03:06.920
underneath
60
00:03:06.920 --> 00:03:12.060
the ball without running the risk of getting too deep.
61
00:03:12.060 --> 00:03:18.400
If I get closer to it, then it will tend to come out a little bit lower.
62
00:03:18.400 --> 00:03:20.920
Again, this is firm sand so I can get away with it.
63
00:03:20.920 --> 00:03:25.940
If it was fluffy, that lat shot might have been a little bit of trouble.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.120
This drill is hands under your hat.
2
00:00:08.120 --> 00:00:13.550
So one common issue that I'll see with poor bunker players is standing too
3

close to the
4
00:00:14.300 --> 00:00:17.120
ball or getting the hands too close to your body.
5
00:00:17.120 --> 00:00:18.480
In fact, I think it's a common one.
6
00:00:18.480 --> 00:00:21.880

while.
9
00:00:23.120 --> 00:00:28.600
Good bunker players tend to have more of this vertical posture and their arms
10
00:00:28.600 --> 00:00:29.720
further away.
11
00:00:29.720 --> 00:00:35.240
That helps control the depth of the swing as well as the contact location.

00:00:35.240 --> 00:00:38.860

in line with
16
00:00:47.720 --> 00:00:52.000
that vertical line as opposed to straight underneath the shoulders.
17
00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:56.910
