For golfers who have a hard time keeping the face open and swinging left

This version of the "horizontal release" drill is perfect for golfers who struggle out of the sand. More specifically, it is great for players who have a hard time feeling the differences between a "stock" release and that which is necessary for great bunker play.

To effectively use the bounce in the sand, we want to make sure the clubface remains open throughout the entirety of the motion. This is in stark contrast to our stock, full-swing mechanics; moves such as the "motorcycle" or the feeling of gradual supination would fall into this category.

Overall, if you can incorporate this drill into your next short game session, you should see improved low-point control and an ability to hit higher & softer bunker shots, especially when "short-sided".

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.760
This drill is horizontal bunker releases so for some golfers they have a really

2
00:00:05.760 --> 00:00:10.740
hard time feeling the the proper rotation of the clubface in this shot. For

3
00:00:10.740 --> 00:00:18.000
bunker shots you basically want the clubface to stay more constant or

4
00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:23.340
basically more open and square especially on the way through. A lot of

5
00:00:23.340 --> 00:00:29.280
golfers tend to bring it back a little bit more closed come into it closed and

6
00:00:29.280 --> 00:00:34.380
then either try to open it or without knowing it they actually really close

7
00:00:34.380 --> 00:00:40.140
it down so they'll tend to do more of this style of release which closes it

8
00:00:40.140 --> 00:00:43.740
down and causes a whole host of contact problems because you take away balance

9
00:00:43.740 --> 00:00:47.780
when you close the face. So what I want you to do is if you struggle with that

10
00:00:47.780 --> 00:00:52.500
clubface you're going to make some horizontal swings just like this where

11
00:00:52.500 --> 00:00:57.740
it's going to stay basically facing you or facing the sky it's not going to

12
00:00:57.740 --> 00:00:57.900
turn

13
00:00:57.900 --> 00:01:01.180
down and face the ground. Now what you're going to do is you're going to add

14
00:01:01.180 --> 00:01:01.380
the

15
00:01:01.380 --> 00:01:07.700
timing so you're going to keep it facing the sky as it passes your body so less

16
00:01:07.700 --> 00:01:14.220
chest rotation and more arm throw. Now that I've got this feeling of kind of

17
00:01:14.220 --> 00:01:17.620
throwing those arms I'm going to focus on getting the low point ahead of the

18
00:01:17.620 --> 00:01:22.100
golf ball and I'm going to focus on getting that sound as it comes around but

19
00:01:22.100 --> 00:01:30.860
the face stays open. If you do so you'll get that good bounce sound and the

20
00:01:30.860 --> 00:01:30.860
ball

21
00:01:30.860 --> 00:01:35.420
will pop up pretty quickly that's a good sign that you're managing the face a

22
00:01:35.420 --> 00:01:39.060
little bit better if you're not quite sure how you're managing the face do a

23
00:01:39.060 --> 00:01:43.660
horizontal swing so you can feel what it would be like for your face to say

24
00:01:43.660 --> 00:01:46.620
open which will usually come from a feeling of either the back of the left

25
00:01:46.620 --> 00:01:51.020
hand staying up or the palm of the right hand facing the sky in that follow

26
00:01:51.020 --> 00:01:55.380
through instead of that right hand getting on top of the left or the left

27
00:01:55.380 --> 00:02:00.180
hand the palm facing up. If you do one of those two if you get the too much

28
00:02:00.180 --> 00:02:04.940
rotation you're going to tend to have bladed shots or really low shots that

29
00:02:04.940 --> 00:02:09.500
have a low launch and you'll have a lot of trouble when you have a high lip

30
00:02:09.500 --> 00:02:09.620
that

31
00:02:09.620 --> 00:02:13.540
you need to carry. So there's a great skill for working on for green side

32
00:02:13.540 --> 00:02:17.620
bunkers especially when you have to hit it high and soft.
