Fluffy Vs Firm Sand

Course Progress
Fluffy sand offers less resistance than firm sand so the club can travel deeper through the sand much easier. This mandates that you need to control the depth better on fluffy sand and generally use a more shallow approach. It's more important to be smooth with your swing in fluffy sand than it is in firm sand.
Firm sand prevents the club from digging too deep into the sand. This means that you can be more aggressive with trying to hit down behind the ball. You need not worry about controlling depth as much, but must really be careful not to have too much tilt behind the ball. It's really easy for the club to skim off the sand and blade the ball if the sand is really firm.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.280
This concept video is adjusting your bunker shot for fluffy versus firm sand.
2
00:00:10.280 --> 00:00:16.620
So basically how you adjust your stroke for different bunkers comes down to
3
00:00:16.620 --> 00:00:17.440
your ability
4
00:00:17.440 --> 00:00:22.820
to control the depth of your low point and the shallowness of the swing as well
5
00:00:22.820 --> 00:00:23.320
as the
6
00:00:23.320 --> 00:00:28.640
low point issue or the low point location or the sand entry location.
7
00:00:28.640 --> 00:00:34.980
Really, with the different densities of sand, being able to control depth and
8
00:00:34.980 --> 00:00:35.500
your steepness
9
00:00:35.500 --> 00:00:37.160
is really important.
10
00:00:37.160 --> 00:00:41.640
In general, the fluffier the sand, the more you can get away with shallow, but
11
00:00:41.640 --> 00:00:42.280
you have
12
00:00:42.280 --> 00:00:46.440
to be careful with getting the low point too deep.
13
00:00:46.440 --> 00:00:50.550
When you're hit, it sounds opposite, but when you're hitting out of firmer sand
14
00:00:50.550 --> 00:00:51.120
, you could
15
00:00:51.120 --> 00:00:54.620
actually get away with a low point that would be deep because what will happen
16
00:00:54.620 --> 00:00:55.200
is the sand
17
00:00:55.200 --> 00:00:59.980
will prevent the club from going too deep.
18
00:00:59.980 --> 00:01:06.320
One of the hardest things to replicate in bunkers is different densities of
19
00:01:06.320 --> 00:01:07.080
sand.
20
00:01:07.080 --> 00:01:14.090
The closest I can do is kind of like cake up a little bit of sand so that the
21
00:01:14.090 --> 00:01:15.280
ball has
22
00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:17.400
a big cushion underneath.
23
00:01:17.400 --> 00:01:23.120
As I do this, I'm also kind of removing some of the sand from another location.
24
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:26.770
The only danger is we have rocks at the bottom, so I'm going to bear on getting
25
00:01:26.770 --> 00:01:27.400
it really
26
00:01:27.400 --> 00:01:31.760
tight and hard-panny, but I'll discuss that.
27
00:01:31.760 --> 00:01:38.160
Here if I have a shot where the bunker has a good amount of sand underneath it,
28
00:01:38.160 --> 00:01:38.640
I can
29
00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:40.800
get well underneath the golf ball here.
30
00:01:40.800 --> 00:01:46.820
Now I have to control the depth, and the depth is controlled by the radius, so
31
00:01:46.820 --> 00:01:48.080
how much my
32
00:01:48.080 --> 00:01:54.360
arms have released the club or kind of the length of these angles.
33
00:01:54.360 --> 00:01:59.800
This would be a little bit more of a narrow radius, this would be more wide.
34
00:01:59.800 --> 00:02:05.080
Getting wider, in general, out of fluffier sand tends to help control the depth
35
00:02:05.080 --> 00:02:05.120
.
36
00:02:05.120 --> 00:02:08.880
In addition, being a little bit flatter, so a little bit more vertical and a
37
00:02:08.880 --> 00:02:09.560
little bit
38
00:02:09.560 --> 00:02:13.600
more around with the arm action, helps control the depth as well.
39
00:02:13.600 --> 00:02:16.340
The only thing you have to watch out for is some people when they try to get
40
00:02:16.340 --> 00:02:16.680
flat, their
41
00:02:16.680 --> 00:02:20.430
low point moves too far backward, and the bottom of the swing is behind the
42
00:02:20.430 --> 00:02:21.000
golf ball
43
00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:23.960
until they tend to err on blading or chunky.
44
00:02:23.960 --> 00:02:29.960
But in general, getting a little bit flatter will just let you skim the ground.
45
00:02:29.960 --> 00:02:34.240
One of the things that you want to practice, if you're a higher level bunker
46
00:02:34.240 --> 00:02:35.360
player, is
47
00:02:35.360 --> 00:02:39.360
you want to practice being able to steepen or flatten that swing playing a
48
00:02:39.360 --> 00:02:40.160
little bit,
49
00:02:40.160 --> 00:02:44.320
kind of go from here to there, kind of like this.
50
00:02:44.320 --> 00:02:49.720
That will help you in your ability to adjust for different densities of sand.
51
00:02:49.720 --> 00:02:54.000
Out of the fluffy sand, we're going to err on getting a little bit more flat.
52
00:02:54.000 --> 00:03:00.710
Out of the hard pan sand, or the sand that's a little bit firmer, or the sand
53
00:03:00.710 --> 00:03:01.680
where you
54
00:03:01.680 --> 00:03:06.960
have less depth underneath it, so kind of wet sand, packed sand, we can get a
55
00:03:06.960 --> 00:03:07.280
little
56
00:03:07.280 --> 00:03:12.400
bit more vertical or a little bit more steep.
57
00:03:12.400 --> 00:03:17.020
I want to err on, almost like playing hard pan, which we talked about in the
58
00:03:17.020 --> 00:03:17.640
finesse
59
00:03:17.640 --> 00:03:21.640
shot, of hitting it a little bit more towards the toe side of the club, because
60
00:03:21.640 --> 00:03:22.160
that will
61
00:03:22.160 --> 00:03:25.960
have a tendency to not dig as much as the heel.
62
00:03:25.960 --> 00:03:31.240
True out of the firm sand, you're not going to really have much dig, but what
63
00:03:31.240 --> 00:03:31.880
can happen
64
00:03:31.880 --> 00:03:38.220
is if you err too much on getting heel contact, I find that either you can
65
00:03:38.220 --> 00:03:39.040
chunk it or the
66
00:03:39.040 --> 00:03:41.720
club will skim off the ground.
67
00:03:41.720 --> 00:03:45.000
It's oftentimes, especially depending on how much bounce you have.
68
00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:49.620
If you have a low level of bounce, then digging the heel is actually not a bad
69
00:03:49.620 --> 00:03:50.240
idea.
70
00:03:50.240 --> 00:03:54.940
But if you have, let's say, 10, 12 degrees of bounce, more kind of normal, then
71
00:03:54.940 --> 00:03:55.320
you would
72
00:03:55.320 --> 00:03:59.730
want to err more on getting a little bit steeper with the angle and trying to
73
00:03:59.730 --> 00:04:00.520
hit it a little
74
00:04:00.520 --> 00:04:03.680
bit more off the toe.
75
00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:09.320
So fluffy sand here, ball is sitting way up.
76
00:04:09.320 --> 00:04:12.800
We're going to feel like we get a little bit more vertical, and we're going to
77
00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:13.240
swing a
78
00:04:13.240 --> 00:04:15.680
little bit more around.
79
00:04:15.680 --> 00:04:16.680
Everything else is going to be the same.
80
00:04:16.680 --> 00:04:21.020
We're still going to have that right arm fairly straight in the right wrist
81
00:04:21.020 --> 00:04:21.920
kind of scooping
82
00:04:21.920 --> 00:04:29.960
under, finishing well around kind of like this.
83
00:04:29.960 --> 00:04:35.520
So you'll hear, I actually pick that pretty clean.
84
00:04:35.520 --> 00:04:36.920
Let's try that one more time.
85
00:04:36.920 --> 00:04:41.720
Because that it's a little hard to simulate a fluffy sand.
86
00:04:41.720 --> 00:04:45.600
I didn't quite get the depth there right here.
87
00:04:45.600 --> 00:04:52.800
We'll take a whole bunch over there and flatten it out just a little bit.
88
00:04:52.800 --> 00:04:57.160
So now we've got a fair amount of cushion underneath the ball.
89
00:04:57.160 --> 00:04:58.360
We'll get a little bit more aggressive.
90
00:04:58.360 --> 00:05:02.510
We're trying to hit behind the ball, but still erring on a shallow bottom of
91
00:05:02.510 --> 00:05:03.440
the swing ahead
92
00:05:03.440 --> 00:05:04.640
of it.
93
00:05:04.640 --> 00:05:10.120
So a little bit flatter, kind of like that.
94
00:05:10.120 --> 00:05:15.420
So there I could feel much kind of longer, flatter bottom of the swing coming
95
00:05:15.420 --> 00:05:15.800
from a
96
00:05:15.800 --> 00:05:16.800
flat position.
97
00:05:16.800 --> 00:05:21.400
That would have worked out really well, even out of fluffy sand.
98
00:05:21.400 --> 00:05:24.140
The one thing you have to watch out for out of fluffy sand, or one thing that
99
00:05:24.140 --> 00:05:24.560
you have
100
00:05:24.560 --> 00:05:27.770
to watch out for is it's harder to get a lot of spin, because usually the ball
101
00:05:27.770 --> 00:05:28.240
is sitting
102
00:05:28.240 --> 00:05:33.490
down just a tiny bit, where out of firm sand you can get your contact point
103
00:05:33.490 --> 00:05:33.840
closer to the
104
00:05:33.840 --> 00:05:38.480
golf ball, so it's often easier to get the ball to check up.
105
00:05:38.480 --> 00:05:42.680
Okay, so now let's just see how far away are those rocks.
106
00:05:42.680 --> 00:05:47.020
Okay, so this is on the firmer side now, because I kicked all the sand from
107
00:05:47.020 --> 00:05:47.960
there to the other
108
00:05:47.960 --> 00:05:48.960
one.
109
00:05:48.960 --> 00:05:50.960
Now it's sitting down a little bit, but it's firmer.
110
00:05:50.960 --> 00:05:56.110
So I'm going to get a tiny bit closer, not like way over it, but tiny bit
111
00:05:56.110 --> 00:05:56.480
closer and
112
00:05:56.480 --> 00:06:03.460
handle a little bit more up, and I can air on kind of toe side of the club
113
00:06:03.460 --> 00:06:06.120
getting contact,
114
00:06:06.120 --> 00:06:07.120
kind of like that.
115
00:06:07.120 --> 00:06:10.220
And you'll see that that one checks up nicely, so it has a little bit more of
116
00:06:10.220 --> 00:06:11.320
kind of a cut
117
00:06:11.320 --> 00:06:16.600
path feel, but still a really good under scoop release, and I'm airing on
118
00:06:16.600 --> 00:06:17.360
hitting it a little
119
00:06:17.360 --> 00:06:19.560
bit more towards the toe.
120
00:06:19.560 --> 00:06:25.510
That can work really well, especially out of, you know, when I grew up on the
121
00:06:25.510 --> 00:06:26.460
east coast
122
00:06:26.460 --> 00:06:30.560
in the winter time, some bunkers would be almost like clay.
123
00:06:30.560 --> 00:06:33.560
That style works really well out of those bunkers.
124
00:06:33.560 --> 00:06:38.220
The place where you can get a little bit tricked up is if there's a fair amount
125
00:06:38.220 --> 00:06:39.500
of sand that's
126
00:06:39.500 --> 00:06:43.720
kind of crusty on top, so if you do come down steep, it's going to, the depth
127
00:06:43.720 --> 00:06:44.320
is going
128
00:06:44.320 --> 00:06:48.070
to be too great, and you're going to have a hard time with distance control, in
129
00:06:48.070 --> 00:06:48.480
which
130
00:06:48.480 --> 00:06:54.100
case you probably air a little bit more on the fluffy side, even though the
131
00:06:54.100 --> 00:06:55.020
sand feels
132
00:06:55.020 --> 00:06:58.790
firm, and that's why when you're testing the sand, you're going to, or when you
133
00:06:58.790 --> 00:06:59.480
're taking
134
00:06:59.480 --> 00:07:03.340
your stance, you're testing the depth and how deep the sand goes when you're
135
00:07:03.340 --> 00:07:03.880
digging
136
00:07:03.880 --> 00:07:04.880
your feet in.
137
00:07:04.880 --> 00:07:08.580
But that's one of the easy ways to help you figure out how to adjust for fluffy
138
00:07:08.580 --> 00:07:09.020
versus
139
00:07:09.020 --> 00:07:10.020
sand.
140
00:07:10.020 --> 00:07:12.890
In general, fluffy, you're going to be a little bit flatter, bottom of the
141
00:07:12.890 --> 00:07:13.560
swing may be a
142
00:07:13.560 --> 00:07:19.260
little bit deeper, but a little bit flatter, kind of a longer contact with the
143
00:07:19.260 --> 00:07:19.960
sand.
144
00:07:19.960 --> 00:07:22.840
And then when the sand is firm, you're going to get a little bit closer, a
145
00:07:22.840 --> 00:07:23.640
little bit more
146
00:07:23.640 --> 00:07:28.000
upright, and you're going to air on hitting it a little bit more on the toe.
147
00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:31.300
All of those help make it easier to get underneath it.
148
00:07:31.300 --> 00:07:36.580
The fluffy shot is not going to spin quite as much as the firmer sand, but
149
00:07:36.580 --> 00:07:37.100
hopefully you'll
150
00:07:37.100 --> 00:07:41.200
be able to adjust those by taking your stock technique and making some of these
151
00:07:41.200 --> 00:07:41.700
couple
152
00:07:41.700 --> 00:07:46.900
little adjustments for firm versus fluffy sand.
