Master the release for tour-level consistency with your bunker game!

The single-arm releases are one of the best ways to clean up poor arm motion through the ball for any golf shot. The bunker is no exception. With the bunker, the actions are going to be slightly different than the full swing. The trail arm is going to have more of a through/scoop pattern. The lead arm will have more of a throw as well. The lead arm most stay closer to the body than it might in a normal wedge shot to account for the club head passing the handle at impact.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.360
This video is the single arm releases for the bunker. So with all the

2
00:00:09.360 --> 00:00:13.040
different shots we like to break out the arms and kind of identify well what

3
00:00:13.040 --> 00:00:15.680
should the right arm do what should the left arm do how do we work them

4
00:00:15.680 --> 00:00:19.880
together. So in this video we're going to cover the details of the right arm

5
00:00:19.880 --> 00:00:20.040
and

6
00:00:20.040 --> 00:00:25.840
the left arm kind of a simplified way. So the the general goal here is the same

7
00:00:25.840 --> 00:00:29.280
we're focusing on trying to get contact with the sand a little bit before the

8
00:00:29.280 --> 00:00:34.070
ball inch to two inches or so and then the bottom of the swing ahead of the

9
00:00:34.070 --> 00:00:34.320
golf

10
00:00:34.320 --> 00:00:40.560
ball. We're going to focus mostly on the arm so we're gonna kind of preset some

11
00:00:40.560 --> 00:00:44.920
of the body movements with our good setup upper body on top of the golf ball.

12
00:00:44.920 --> 00:00:45.440
Now

13
00:00:45.440 --> 00:00:49.280
when we're working on we'll start with the right arm when we're working on the

14
00:00:49.280 --> 00:00:54.960
right arm our goal is to release the club kind of straight out in front of our

15
00:00:54.960 --> 00:01:00.120
chest kind of more like this we don't want to have a lot of shaft lean and

16
00:01:00.120 --> 00:01:05.480
angle we're going to release the club so it's kind of straight out pointing in

17
00:01:05.480 --> 00:01:12.040
front of me and you'll see that the club as it passes instead of having some

18
00:01:12.040 --> 00:01:17.360
rollover and pointing that club down it's gonna tend to stay pointed up towards

19
00:01:17.360 --> 00:01:21.040
the sky. Now the reason it's not gonna look like this when we actually hit a

20
00:01:21.040 --> 00:01:24.800
shot is because my body is going to turn so it's gonna pivot and it's gonna

21
00:01:24.800 --> 00:01:31.240
finish kind of low and over here on the left but the overall goal here our big

22
00:01:31.240 --> 00:01:36.990
focus is we're going to let the club pass. I would say that the secondary focus

23
00:01:36.990 --> 00:01:37.160
is

24
00:01:37.160 --> 00:01:41.920
trying to keep that trail arm pretty straight through the shot so it'll have

25
00:01:41.920 --> 00:01:46.720
more of a look kind of like this where the palm is right down in front but kind

26
00:01:46.720 --> 00:01:52.960
of facing up towards me instead of across and pointing more down. So with a

27
00:01:52.960 --> 00:01:53.200
golf

28
00:01:53.200 --> 00:01:58.120
ball this should have a nice thud sound and splash the sand we might have a

29
00:01:58.120 --> 00:02:02.560
hard time creating a lot of speed but as we take bigger swings we'll still be

30
00:02:02.560 --> 00:02:07.200
able to hit this a reasonable distance so ball position is good leaning a

31
00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:07.440
little

32
00:02:07.440 --> 00:02:13.360
bit onto that left side and then palm is going to stay facing up and it's gonna

33
00:02:13.360 --> 00:02:19.680
have a feel of kind of going more almost underneath or scooping like that where

34
00:02:19.680 --> 00:02:26.640
the palm stays facing up all the way through good if I came back to start

35
00:02:26.640 --> 00:02:33.120
it'll finish in front of me in fact sometimes what I'll do initially is I'm

36
00:02:33.120 --> 00:02:39.920
gonna try to take the body out of it and I'm just going to let the club pass so

37
00:02:39.920 --> 00:02:44.120
I'm gonna focus on getting some owner deviation but also kind of flexing that

38
00:02:44.120 --> 00:02:48.160
wrist on the way through so that it gets pointing up kind of like this you'll

39
00:02:48.160 --> 00:02:55.920
see that that came out pretty nicely. Now I find that the right arm is fairly

40
00:02:55.920 --> 00:03:01.000
natural if I was to take a bigger swing just kind of let it clap out a little

41
00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:06.520
thin but you'll see with a bigger swing allowing momentum to help I can hit

42
00:03:06.520 --> 00:03:06.720
this

43
00:03:06.720 --> 00:03:13.920
right arm shot a pretty good distance kind of by letting the weight of the

44
00:03:13.920 --> 00:03:17.840
club power the swing getting getting that scoop timing in the speed at the

45
00:03:17.840 --> 00:03:23.640
right place finishing in front of me but also rotated and facing the target I

46
00:03:23.640 --> 00:03:29.960
think that overall if you get the right hand working really well that can clean

47
00:03:29.960 --> 00:03:33.840
up a lot of bunker action but some people have a really dominant pole

48
00:03:33.840 --> 00:03:38.200
pattern from the left arm so let's talk through some of the details here of the

49
00:03:38.200 --> 00:03:44.440
left arm or the lead side for you lefty so with the left arm if we're going to

50
00:03:44.440 --> 00:03:49.640
match it one of the easiest things to do is to just trade hands in this

51
00:03:49.640 --> 00:03:54.140
position so this is going to feel quite awkward for a lot of you most people

52
00:03:54.140 --> 00:03:54.640
when

53
00:03:54.640 --> 00:03:57.520
I give them a club and say swing it left hand only they're gonna have a

54
00:03:57.520 --> 00:04:04.240
tendency to really pull that tends to cause contact problems really big contact

55
00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:09.040
problems work for the bunker so our goal here is to let the club pass while the

56
00:04:09.040 --> 00:04:14.000
wrist is in extension so we're gonna keep that wrist in extension during the

57
00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:18.720
backswing which keeps the face open and the bounce exposed and then on the way

58
00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:25.440
through we're gonna feel like it the the wrist stays or sorry the arm stays

59
00:04:25.440 --> 00:04:31.960
pinned to the side and in front of the body as the club had passes so we're

60
00:04:31.960 --> 00:04:32.080
gonna

61
00:04:32.080 --> 00:04:40.200
get here lean a little bit more left kind of like this now I guess I believe

62
00:04:40.200 --> 00:04:45.880
that it's harder to create a the kind of full speed with the left arm but it is

63
00:04:45.880 --> 00:04:52.280
doable so if we made a little bit bigger swing and then really let the wrist

64
00:04:52.280 --> 00:04:58.160
pass when I put the wrist the right wrist on it'll feel like it's still in

65
00:04:58.160 --> 00:05:03.080
front to me the club head is facing up but it's more over to the left side and

66
00:05:03.080 --> 00:05:08.960
in fact when you put both hands on the club if you execute both of those

67
00:05:08.960 --> 00:05:14.000
movements together I'll focus on the left one it'll tend to finish that right

68
00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:18.360
arm pretty straight still scooped underneath but it'll finish a little bit

69
00:05:18.360 --> 00:05:25.240
more over here to the left side of your body but still really close kind of

70
00:05:25.240 --> 00:05:25.360
like

71
00:05:25.360 --> 00:05:30.080
this so if you're struggling with contact and you're looking at your

72
00:05:30.080 --> 00:05:36.640
video I'll go through a couple of the common pitfalls that we'll see so with

73
00:05:36.640 --> 00:05:42.120
the right arm the most common pitfall I'll see is a they'll swing more from the

74
00:05:42.120 --> 00:05:47.720
shoulder and it'll get kind of way back right here as opposed to keeping that

75
00:05:47.720 --> 00:05:53.920
arm a little bit closer and keeping the club in front of you it will tend to

76
00:05:53.920 --> 00:05:59.000
swing kind of back like this and it will do more of a whole shoulder action

77
00:05:59.000 --> 00:05:59.000
like

78
00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:03.440
this instead of having more wrist action down to the bottom the other really

79
00:06:03.440 --> 00:06:09.760
common one that you'll see is on the way through having the club turn over so

80
00:06:09.760 --> 00:06:13.280
it'll kind of have more of a throw like that where it spins over and you'll see

81
00:06:13.280 --> 00:06:16.800
that that tends to really cause some contact problems out of the sand I

82
00:06:16.800 --> 00:06:22.760
didn't I didn't make any sand contact whatsoever so I want to get more of this

83
00:06:22.760 --> 00:06:27.960
scoop out in front of me with that arm straight different length swings are

84
00:06:27.960 --> 00:06:34.600
fine but it will tend to strike the sand just before the golf ball but then

85
00:06:34.600 --> 00:06:40.200
bottom out after it okay with the left arm the most common problems will be

86
00:06:40.200 --> 00:06:46.040
getting steep or disconnected so coming down into the sand again closing the

87
00:06:46.040 --> 00:06:51.220
face it'll tend to look something like this where it kind of really digs

88
00:06:51.220 --> 00:06:51.400
because

89
00:06:51.400 --> 00:06:55.880
I've rotated the club face closed leading edge hits the sand and it digs down a

90
00:06:55.880 --> 00:07:02.520
lot the second option usually causes no sand or really bad sand contact where

91
00:07:02.520 --> 00:07:10.200
I'm pulling that arm away if you recall for the really good lead arm only it's

92
00:07:10.200 --> 00:07:15.600
gonna have the wrist is gonna stay in front and we're gonna have more of a

93
00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:21.240
scoop release or release from the wrist where it's passing kind of like this

94
00:07:21.240 --> 00:07:26.280
but staying in an open position if I did it towards the camera it's gonna stay

95
00:07:26.280 --> 00:07:30.280
more like this as opposed to rotating over like we might expect in the full

96
00:07:30.280 --> 00:07:34.840
swing so if you're checking yourself on video those are a couple couple of the

97
00:07:34.840 --> 00:07:39.560
common pitfalls to look at if you feel like you're doing these pretty well and

98
00:07:39.560 --> 00:07:44.080
you're still struggling then make sure that you're not getting either too much

99
00:07:44.080 --> 00:07:52.880
sway off the ball or too much tilt that can disrupt even the best of the arm

100
00:07:52.880 --> 00:07:56.280
releases so you're gonna make sure that you stay stacked hips are gonna stay

101
00:07:56.280 --> 00:08:01.320
pretty level right arm left arm little kind of shadow movement ultimately you

102
00:08:01.320 --> 00:08:06.280
can put them together and try to have both arms helping contribute to the

103
00:08:06.280 --> 00:08:09.720
overall release pattern which for the bunker is a little bit different than

104
00:08:09.720 --> 00:08:14.840
what we see in the regular swing so one of my favorite little sequences let's

105
00:08:14.840 --> 00:08:25.920
do right arm good smack makes that thud noise left arm got a little steep on

106
00:08:25.920 --> 00:08:34.200
that one but released it okay and now trying to put them together right arm

107
00:08:34.200 --> 00:08:46.600
left arm nice high soft bunker shot just like that
