The follow-through checkpoint can be a really easy starting point for training your Stock Bunker Shot.
In many golf shots, the follow-through can be a really good position to train. By focusing on the finish position, often times some of the details required to get there organize themselves in a more natural way. With the follow-through position for bunkers, you want to pay attention to a few keys:
- Your chest is forward over your lead foot and turned toward the target with the handle in front of your body (stacked centers)
- Your grip, and hands, are closer to your left hip
- Your clubface is still pointing toward the sky
- Your lead knee is flexed
If you master some or all of these keys, you'll find sand contact out of the bunkers to be more repeatable and your bunker game more consistent.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.520
This year is follow through hold for the bunker shot.
2
00:00:07.520 --> 00:00:11.740
So we're going to focus on a couple keys in the follow through and we're really
3
00:00:11.740 --> 00:00:12.000
going
4
00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:16.730
to kind of forget about some of the other, you know, maybe some backswing keys
5
00:00:16.730 --> 00:00:17.760
or whatever.
6
00:00:17.760 --> 00:00:21.200
We're really just going to focus on getting into this follow through position
7
00:00:21.200 --> 00:00:22.000
and letting
8
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:25.280
the club swing kind of through the sand instead of at the ball.
9
00:00:25.280 --> 00:00:28.700
This can be really helpful for golfers who have more of a hit tendency and try
10
00:00:28.700 --> 00:00:29.240
to really
11
00:00:29.240 --> 00:00:33.340
hit the golf ball as opposed to swinging through the sand.
12
00:00:33.340 --> 00:00:37.840
So the two keys that we're going to focus on are feeling a little bit more
13
00:00:37.840 --> 00:00:38.640
level hips
14
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:44.380
and feeling like the arms finish low and left over by your pocket.
15
00:00:44.380 --> 00:00:49.560
So a lot of bunker players who tend to struggle with bunker play or a lot of
16
00:00:49.560 --> 00:00:50.640
golfers who struggle
17
00:00:50.640 --> 00:00:55.710
with bunker play tend to have more of their arms finishing up and out towards
18
00:00:55.710 --> 00:00:56.480
the target.
19
00:00:56.480 --> 00:01:00.750
If I just draw a line in the sand, what you'll see is the more that I swing my
20
00:01:00.750 --> 00:01:01.440
arms up that
21
00:01:01.440 --> 00:01:06.620
tends to move the low point backward, the more that I swing my arms more down
22
00:01:06.620 --> 00:01:07.080
that tends
23
00:01:07.080 --> 00:01:09.120
to move the low point forward.
24
00:01:09.120 --> 00:01:13.660
Now that can cause the club to come in steeply, which is why I have to balance
25
00:01:13.660 --> 00:01:15.000
that by controlling
26
00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:20.410
the height with a little bit more vertical posture as well as a little bit more
27
00:01:20.410 --> 00:01:20.880
wrist
28
00:01:20.880 --> 00:01:25.520
action kind of letting the club pass and keeping the club face open.
29
00:01:25.520 --> 00:01:30.700
If we do that then our finish position is going to have a really classic look
30
00:01:30.700 --> 00:01:31.120
where we're
31
00:01:31.120 --> 00:01:36.300
going to try and get into a little bit more of a level hip turn kind of like
32
00:01:36.300 --> 00:01:37.120
this where
33
00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:38.680
my knees are still bent.
34
00:01:38.680 --> 00:01:42.020
That's one of the unique characteristics of the bunker shot where my knees are
35
00:01:42.020 --> 00:01:42.360
still
36
00:01:42.360 --> 00:01:48.700
bent as my hips have turned through and I'm going to finish with the club over
37
00:01:48.700 --> 00:01:49.400
by my
38
00:01:49.400 --> 00:01:54.090
pocket almost like if this was a sword and I was going to put it in the sheath
39
00:01:54.090 --> 00:01:54.640
off to
40
00:01:54.640 --> 00:01:58.770
the side just like this and you'll see that when I do that the club face is
41
00:01:58.770 --> 00:01:59.400
pointing
42
00:01:59.400 --> 00:02:04.320
up towards the sky not turned over and pointing the ground like that.
43
00:02:04.320 --> 00:02:08.040
So we're going to focus on those two aspects in the follow through.
44
00:02:08.040 --> 00:02:13.210
We're going to focus on keeping the left leg or the left knee bent and we're
45
00:02:13.210 --> 00:02:13.480
going to
46
00:02:13.480 --> 00:02:17.440
focus on finishing left over near our hip.
47
00:02:17.440 --> 00:02:21.080
So with all the bunker shots let's draw a little bit of feedback there.
48
00:02:21.080 --> 00:02:25.240
We'll do a practice one just to kind of get the feeling of the sand contact.
49
00:02:25.240 --> 00:02:29.940
So all good setups little vertical and then we're going to feel like the hips
50
00:02:29.940 --> 00:02:30.440
kind of
51
00:02:30.440 --> 00:02:34.640
turn more level and finish well over here to the left that would have been
52
00:02:34.640 --> 00:02:35.400
really good
53
00:02:35.400 --> 00:02:36.640
contact there.
54
00:02:36.640 --> 00:02:38.480
So let's try that with a ball.
55
00:02:38.480 --> 00:02:45.190
So we've got setup pretty good one there arms finish over by the hip knee is
56
00:02:45.190 --> 00:02:46.240
still bent
57
00:02:46.240 --> 00:02:50.160
in turn chest facing I call that a pretty good rep and I was able to pay
58
00:02:50.160 --> 00:02:50.920
attention to
59
00:02:50.920 --> 00:02:54.440
some of those follow through position keys.
60
00:02:54.440 --> 00:02:59.620
The most common ones that you're going to struggle with are either it's just
61
00:02:59.620 --> 00:03:00.160
been your
62
00:03:00.160 --> 00:03:05.740
arms and so your body hasn't turned and now if I this is actually out in front
63
00:03:05.740 --> 00:03:06.440
of my body
64
00:03:06.440 --> 00:03:11.010
instead of finishing over over to the left or in order to get it to finish over
65
00:03:11.010 --> 00:03:11.520
to the
66
00:03:11.520 --> 00:03:16.050
left I'm going to roll that right arm over and close the club face it's going
67
00:03:16.050 --> 00:03:16.760
to finish
68
00:03:16.760 --> 00:03:24.260
like this instead of more of that kind of throw under the armpit feel or when
69
00:03:24.260 --> 00:03:24.800
the when
70
00:03:24.800 --> 00:03:28.750
the hips turn and you try to turn the hips more level you're actually just
71
00:03:28.750 --> 00:03:30.040
going to lunge
72
00:03:30.040 --> 00:03:34.150
that upper body and you might hit some shanks so you might finish with that
73
00:03:34.150 --> 00:03:35.120
upper body kind
74
00:03:35.120 --> 00:03:43.210
of to vertical saying not staying in in that vertical posture but actually kind
75
00:03:43.210 --> 00:03:44.360
of rotating
76
00:03:44.360 --> 00:03:49.540
that right side over on top of the golf ball so those two the two most common
77
00:03:49.540 --> 00:03:50.360
bunker problems
78
00:03:50.360 --> 00:03:54.380
I'll see will be a little bit kind of throwy like that which tends to cause
79
00:03:54.380 --> 00:03:55.120
either the
80
00:03:55.120 --> 00:04:02.630
blade or the skull or like I said the second one getting which is more rare but
81
00:04:02.630 --> 00:04:03.480
equally
82
00:04:03.480 --> 00:04:08.030
problematic kind of getting super on top of it like that and typically getting
83
00:04:08.030 --> 00:04:08.320
a lot
84
00:04:08.320 --> 00:04:11.190
of heel contact you'll often think you're bleeding it but you're really getting
85
00:04:11.190 --> 00:04:11.440
heel
86
00:04:11.440 --> 00:04:16.950
contact so let's recap where we're trying to get through into this follow
87
00:04:16.950 --> 00:04:17.700
through we're
88
00:04:17.700 --> 00:04:21.070
going to be stacked so our upper body is pretty vertical facing the target and
89
00:04:21.070 --> 00:04:21.720
a hips have
90
00:04:21.720 --> 00:04:26.900
turned level and we're going to finish with the club face still open and the
91
00:04:26.900 --> 00:04:27.520
arms kind
92
00:04:27.520 --> 00:04:32.060
of low and left over here if you do that you'll usually get really good sand
93
00:04:32.060 --> 00:04:33.360
contact both
94
00:04:33.360 --> 00:04:38.090
contact location as well as the bottom of the swing you'll be able to control
95
00:04:38.090 --> 00:04:39.200
the trajectory
96
00:04:39.200 --> 00:04:49.720
as well as the distance for your bunker shots really high soft bunker shots
97
00:04:49.720 --> 00:04:50.680
good finish
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.520
This year is follow through hold for the bunker shot.
2
00:00:07.520 --> 00:00:11.740
So we're going to focus on a couple keys in the follow through and we're really
3
00:00:11.740 --> 00:00:12.000
going
4
00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:16.730
to kind of forget about some of the other, you know, maybe some backswing keys
5
00:00:16.730 --> 00:00:17.760
or whatever.
6
00:00:17.760 --> 00:00:21.200
We're really just going to focus on getting into this follow through position
7
00:00:21.200 --> 00:00:22.000
and letting
8
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:25.280
the club swing kind of through the sand instead of at the ball.
9
00:00:25.280 --> 00:00:28.700
This can be really helpful for golfers who have more of a hit tendency and try
10
00:00:28.700 --> 00:00:29.240
to really
11
00:00:29.240 --> 00:00:33.340
hit the golf ball as opposed to swinging through the sand.
12
00:00:33.340 --> 00:00:37.840
So the two keys that we're going to focus on are feeling a little bit more
13
00:00:37.840 --> 00:00:38.640
level hips
14
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:44.380
and feeling like the arms finish low and left over by your pocket.
15
00:00:44.380 --> 00:00:49.560
So a lot of bunker players who tend to struggle with bunker play or a lot of
16
00:00:49.560 --> 00:00:50.640
golfers who struggle
17
00:00:50.640 --> 00:00:55.710
with bunker play tend to have more of their arms finishing up and out towards
18
00:00:55.710 --> 00:00:56.480
the target.
19
00:00:56.480 --> 00:01:00.750
If I just draw a line in the sand, what you'll see is the more that I swing my
20
00:01:00.750 --> 00:01:01.440
arms up that
21
00:01:01.440 --> 00:01:06.620
tends to move the low point backward, the more that I swing my arms more down
22
00:01:06.620 --> 00:01:07.080
that tends
23
00:01:07.080 --> 00:01:09.120
to move the low point forward.
24
00:01:09.120 --> 00:01:13.660
Now that can cause the club to come in steeply, which is why I have to balance
25
00:01:13.660 --> 00:01:15.000
that by controlling
26
00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:20.410
the height with a little bit more vertical posture as well as a little bit more
27
00:01:20.410 --> 00:01:20.880
wrist
28
00:01:20.880 --> 00:01:25.520
action kind of letting the club pass and keeping the club face open.
29
00:01:25.520 --> 00:01:30.700
If we do that then our finish position is going to have a really classic look
30
00:01:30.700 --> 00:01:31.120
where we're
31
00:01:31.120 --> 00:01:36.300
going to try and get into a little bit more of a level hip turn kind of like
32
00:01:36.300 --> 00:01:37.120
this where
33
00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:38.680
my knees are still bent.
34
00:01:38.680 --> 00:01:42.020
That's one of the unique characteristics of the bunker shot where my knees are
35
00:01:42.020 --> 00:01:42.360
still
36
00:01:42.360 --> 00:01:48.700
bent as my hips have turned through and I'm going to finish with the club over
37
00:01:48.700 --> 00:01:49.400
by my
38
00:01:49.400 --> 00:01:54.090
pocket almost like if this was a sword and I was going to put it in the sheath
39
00:01:54.090 --> 00:01:54.640
off to
40
00:01:54.640 --> 00:01:58.770
the side just like this and you'll see that when I do that the club face is
41
00:01:58.770 --> 00:01:59.400
pointing
42
00:01:59.400 --> 00:02:04.320
up towards the sky not turned over and pointing the ground like that.
43
00:02:04.320 --> 00:02:08.040
So we're going to focus on those two aspects in the follow through.
44
00:02:08.040 --> 00:02:13.210
We're going to focus on keeping the left leg or the left knee bent and we're
45
00:02:13.210 --> 00:02:13.480
going to
46
00:02:13.480 --> 00:02:17.440
focus on finishing left over near our hip.
47
00:02:17.440 --> 00:02:21.080
So with all the bunker shots let's draw a little bit of feedback there.
48
00:02:21.080 --> 00:02:25.240
We'll do a practice one just to kind of get the feeling of the sand contact.
49
00:02:25.240 --> 00:02:29.940
So all good setups little vertical and then we're going to feel like the hips
50
00:02:29.940 --> 00:02:30.440
kind of
51
00:02:30.440 --> 00:02:34.640
turn more level and finish well over here to the left that would have been
52
00:02:34.640 --> 00:02:35.400
really good
53
00:02:35.400 --> 00:02:36.640
contact there.
54
00:02:36.640 --> 00:02:38.480
So let's try that with a ball.
55
00:02:38.480 --> 00:02:45.190
So we've got setup pretty good one there arms finish over by the hip knee is
56
00:02:45.190 --> 00:02:46.240
still bent
57
00:02:46.240 --> 00:02:50.160
in turn chest facing I call that a pretty good rep and I was able to pay
58
00:02:50.160 --> 00:02:50.920
attention to
59
00:02:50.920 --> 00:02:54.440
some of those follow through position keys.
60
00:02:54.440 --> 00:02:59.620
The most common ones that you're going to struggle with are either it's just
61
00:02:59.620 --> 00:03:00.160
been your
62
00:03:00.160 --> 00:03:05.740
arms and so your body hasn't turned and now if I this is actually out in front
63
00:03:05.740 --> 00:03:06.440
of my body
64
00:03:06.440 --> 00:03:11.010
instead of finishing over over to the left or in order to get it to finish over
65
00:03:11.010 --> 00:03:11.520
to the
66
00:03:11.520 --> 00:03:16.050
left I'm going to roll that right arm over and close the club face it's going
67
00:03:16.050 --> 00:03:16.760
to finish
68
00:03:16.760 --> 00:03:24.260
like this instead of more of that kind of throw under the armpit feel or when
69
00:03:24.260 --> 00:03:24.800
the when
70
00:03:24.800 --> 00:03:28.750
the hips turn and you try to turn the hips more level you're actually just
71
00:03:28.750 --> 00:03:30.040
going to lunge
72
00:03:30.040 --> 00:03:34.150
that upper body and you might hit some shanks so you might finish with that
73
00:03:34.150 --> 00:03:35.120
upper body kind
74
00:03:35.120 --> 00:03:43.210
of to vertical saying not staying in in that vertical posture but actually kind
75
00:03:43.210 --> 00:03:44.360
of rotating
76
00:03:44.360 --> 00:03:49.540
that right side over on top of the golf ball so those two the two most common
77
00:03:49.540 --> 00:03:50.360
bunker problems
78
00:03:50.360 --> 00:03:54.380
I'll see will be a little bit kind of throwy like that which tends to cause
79
00:03:54.380 --> 00:03:55.120
either the
80
00:03:55.120 --> 00:04:02.630
blade or the skull or like I said the second one getting which is more rare but
81
00:04:02.630 --> 00:04:03.480
equally
82
00:04:03.480 --> 00:04:08.030
problematic kind of getting super on top of it like that and typically getting
83
00:04:08.030 --> 00:04:08.320
a lot
84
00:04:08.320 --> 00:04:11.190
of heel contact you'll often think you're bleeding it but you're really getting
85
00:04:11.190 --> 00:04:11.440
heel
86
00:04:11.440 --> 00:04:16.950
contact so let's recap where we're trying to get through into this follow
87
00:04:16.950 --> 00:04:17.700
through we're
88
00:04:17.700 --> 00:04:21.070
going to be stacked so our upper body is pretty vertical facing the target and
89
00:04:21.070 --> 00:04:21.720
a hips have
90
00:04:21.720 --> 00:04:26.900
turned level and we're going to finish with the club face still open and the
91
00:04:26.900 --> 00:04:27.520
arms kind
92
00:04:27.520 --> 00:04:32.060
of low and left over here if you do that you'll usually get really good sand
93
00:04:32.060 --> 00:04:33.360
contact both
94
00:04:33.360 --> 00:04:38.090
contact location as well as the bottom of the swing you'll be able to control
95
00:04:38.090 --> 00:04:39.200
the trajectory
96
00:04:39.200 --> 00:04:49.720
as well as the distance for your bunker shots really high soft bunker shots
97
00:04:49.720 --> 00:04:50.680
good finish
