One Target, Two Shots

Course Progress
I'm a big fan of making your practice more like your gameplay. This usually means changing shots frequently. One of the most common, and powerful ways to train your short game is by changing the shot with each repetition. This is not only powerful for helping you establish an actual routine for each shot, but it's also powerful in forcing you to see multiple shots. This can help your shot selection on the course. During playing lessons, when golfers are getting ready for a shot, I often see them fail to imagine the different options. Instead, they take one, comfortable shot, each time. This game will help you break free from that trap.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.580
This game is one target, two shots.
2
00:00:07.580 --> 00:00:12.760
So one of my favorite ways for developing touch around the greens, and it's
3
00:00:12.760 --> 00:00:13.200
useful out
4
00:00:13.200 --> 00:00:17.360
of bunkers, is by hitting a couple different shots to the same target.
5
00:00:17.360 --> 00:00:22.570
So in this case, we're going to try and hit either two different trajectories
6
00:00:22.570 --> 00:00:23.000
or two
7
00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:25.640
different contact locations.
8
00:00:25.640 --> 00:00:30.180
So I'm going to still provide a little bit of feedback here, but we're trying
9
00:00:30.180 --> 00:00:30.600
to hit
10
00:00:30.600 --> 00:00:36.640
it, we'll say, to that 15-year target that's easiest to see from this camera.
11
00:00:36.640 --> 00:00:41.850
So first one, I'm going to try to hit a little bit of a lower, or like a chunk
12
00:00:41.850 --> 00:00:42.720
and run, and
13
00:00:42.720 --> 00:00:46.840
then second shot, I'm going to try to hit more of a shot where I carry it there
14
00:00:46.840 --> 00:00:47.160
.
15
00:00:47.160 --> 00:00:51.120
So I can either use the setup changes that we learned, or I can use some of the
16
00:00:51.120 --> 00:00:51.560
swing
17
00:00:51.560 --> 00:00:55.920
changes, but I'm trying to just let my kind of inner athlete decide which ones
18
00:00:55.920 --> 00:00:56.560
feel right
19
00:00:56.560 --> 00:00:58.640
for this particular shot.
20
00:00:58.640 --> 00:01:03.000
So first we're going to hit kind of a little bit lower, chunk and run.
21
00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:11.130
So ball position is just a touch back, is what I'm feeling today, and then,
22
00:01:11.130 --> 00:01:11.980
well, it
23
00:01:11.980 --> 00:01:14.440
was the shot I wanted, but not the distance.
24
00:01:14.440 --> 00:01:18.610
So I ended up close to that 20-yard flag, so because of that, I'm now going to
25
00:01:18.610 --> 00:01:19.280
challenge
26
00:01:19.280 --> 00:01:23.570
myself to hit the higher shot to that target, instead of backing up or starting
27
00:01:23.570 --> 00:01:24.520
over, just
28
00:01:24.520 --> 00:01:25.520
for fun.
29
00:01:25.520 --> 00:01:28.360
You can always experiment with, or vary, how you're doing it.
30
00:01:28.360 --> 00:01:30.940
There are some days where I say, "Nope, we've got to start over and go to the
31
00:01:30.940 --> 00:01:31.680
15-yard."
32
00:01:31.680 --> 00:01:36.160
But for this video, let's now try to go to the 20-yard, because I'm playing the
33
00:01:36.160 --> 00:01:36.520
ball
34
00:01:36.520 --> 00:01:40.390
a little bit more forward, so today it feels like setup changes are a little
35
00:01:40.390 --> 00:01:41.440
bit more natural
36
00:01:41.440 --> 00:01:46.620
for me, so I'm going to play the ball a little bit more forward, a little bit
37
00:01:46.620 --> 00:01:47.160
bigger swing
38
00:01:47.160 --> 00:01:51.880
with the face open and contact point, maybe just the touch closer to the ball,
39
00:01:51.880 --> 00:01:52.440
or it feels
40
00:01:52.440 --> 00:01:54.880
like that way when I'm getting set up.
41
00:01:54.880 --> 00:02:01.280
Oh, got kind of underneath it, so that was really high, and that went about 14-
42
00:02:01.280 --> 00:02:01.960
yard, so
43
00:02:01.960 --> 00:02:04.480
that would have been really good for the 15-yard shot.
44
00:02:04.480 --> 00:02:08.480
So now we'll kind of undo it, so I did the 15-yard.
45
00:02:08.480 --> 00:02:12.990
Now let's redo that first shot, let's redo the chunk and run, so I'm going to
46
00:02:12.990 --> 00:02:13.800
lean a little
47
00:02:13.800 --> 00:02:18.320
bit more, feel like I bring the club up a little bit more.
48
00:02:18.320 --> 00:02:21.750
There's a little bit more of the chunk and run to the same target, so we'll
49
00:02:21.750 --> 00:02:22.480
just pretend
50
00:02:22.480 --> 00:02:26.470
that that first ball was a breakfast ball, that's what they do here in the
51
00:02:26.470 --> 00:02:27.560
States, right?
52
00:02:27.560 --> 00:02:30.480
Because the second two finished about the same distance with totally different
53
00:02:30.480 --> 00:02:31.200
trajectories.
54
00:02:31.200 --> 00:02:36.380
So when you're, there's a little bit more of an advanced game, if you're pretty
55
00:02:36.380 --> 00:02:36.560
good
56
00:02:36.560 --> 00:02:40.750
at your standard baselines, then I want to challenge you to get at least two
57
00:02:40.750 --> 00:02:41.440
different
58
00:02:41.440 --> 00:02:43.680
shots to the targets.
59
00:02:43.680 --> 00:02:47.760
You can play around with either setup position, or one of the, you can play
60
00:02:47.760 --> 00:02:48.720
with different
61
00:02:48.720 --> 00:02:56.910
clubs, or one of my favorite ones is to play with different kind of tempos or
62
00:02:56.910 --> 00:02:58.160
even swing
63
00:02:58.160 --> 00:02:59.160
shapes.
64
00:02:59.160 --> 00:03:04.600
So I'm going to do one more, one more to that 15-yard target, where I'm going
65
00:03:04.600 --> 00:03:05.400
to feel like
66
00:03:05.400 --> 00:03:11.120
I get a little bit wider and almost pick the ball, again that was much closer
67
00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:12.360
to the 22-yard
68
00:03:12.360 --> 00:03:16.520
target, but I'm, we'll try that again.
69
00:03:16.520 --> 00:03:22.410
So I'm going to get a little bit wider, so I'm still vertical a little, kind of
70
00:03:22.410 --> 00:03:22.640
on the
71
00:03:22.640 --> 00:03:26.840
tall side, but I'm going to feel wider, more shallow, kind of like that.
72
00:03:26.840 --> 00:03:29.800
That comes out really low and has some nice run to it.
73
00:03:29.800 --> 00:03:34.950
That's one of the ways that out of fluffier sand, I feel really confident being
74
00:03:34.950 --> 00:03:35.080
able to
75
00:03:35.080 --> 00:03:38.200
get a longer shot out of the club.
76
00:03:38.200 --> 00:03:44.960
And then now we're going to experiment with maybe a little in between those.
77
00:03:44.960 --> 00:03:49.960
So similar setup, but now the club's going to come up just a bit.
78
00:03:49.960 --> 00:03:57.360
Oh, I felt a little slippage in that right foot like I'm standing on a rock.
79
00:03:57.360 --> 00:03:58.360
Let's try that again.
80
00:03:58.360 --> 00:04:01.600
Okay, that's why we're practicing.
81
00:04:01.600 --> 00:04:08.560
So here, yeah, kind of whisked out a little bit on that.
82
00:04:08.560 --> 00:04:13.870
So anyway, the purpose of this video is to really highlight one of the more
83
00:04:13.870 --> 00:04:14.520
advanced
84
00:04:14.520 --> 00:04:18.800
ways that I like to practice, which is picking a single target and
85
00:04:18.800 --> 00:04:20.320
experimenting, playing
86
00:04:20.320 --> 00:04:23.960
around with different options in order to hit two different shots.
87
00:04:23.960 --> 00:04:28.120
So you don't just fall into the trap of only hitting one shot around the green.
88
00:04:28.120 --> 00:04:32.780
It's less common in the bunker because more often than not, we're just hitting
89
00:04:32.780 --> 00:04:33.320
a stock
90
00:04:33.320 --> 00:04:35.280
or standard bunker shot.
91
00:04:35.280 --> 00:04:38.700
But as you get better, scenarios will change things and you want to be able to
92
00:04:38.700 --> 00:04:39.920
accommodate.
93
00:04:39.920 --> 00:04:43.570
So practice hitting two different shots to the same target that will really
94
00:04:43.570 --> 00:04:44.160
help your
95
00:04:44.160 --> 00:04:50.290
visualization creativity and your overall shot variability for your bunker game
96
00:04:50.290 --> 00:04:50.600
.
97
00:04:50.600 --> 00:04:53.640
One more, it looks like today I'm doing better with the low ones.
98
00:04:53.640 --> 00:04:58.480
So we're going to do a little bit of the hold it square instead of open it up.
99
00:04:58.480 --> 00:05:01.760
Good, that's got a bunch of roll.
100
00:05:01.760 --> 00:05:10.750
And then we'll follow that up with great lie, ball forward, let's go high, high
101
00:05:10.750 --> 00:05:11.440
kind of
102
00:05:11.440 --> 00:05:19.880
moon ball close to the same distance there.
