How to hit the ball when the ball is buried deep in the sand.
When the ball is buried in the sand you'll have to create a swing with a deeper bottom than normal. There are two ways to adjust your swing in this way. The easiest way is to simply close the face and take away the bounce. Then the club will dig into the sand and get underneath the ball. The other option is to chop down steeply with the heel hitting into the sand first. The heel tends to dig and this will make it much easier to get a deeper divot.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.060
This content video is discussing the plug lie.
2
00:00:08.060 --> 00:00:15.210
So the plug lie bunker shot typically happens when the ball hits into fluffier
3
00:00:15.210 --> 00:00:16.240
sand.
4
00:00:16.240 --> 00:00:20.660
Typically when you have a shot that has a lot of spin and the sand is deep and
5
00:00:20.660 --> 00:00:21.160
fluffy
6
00:00:21.160 --> 00:00:24.720
and the ball just kind of sits down below the surface.
7
00:00:24.720 --> 00:00:29.960
So in order to hit the shot, this is not going to be a perfect demonstration
8
00:00:29.960 --> 00:00:29.960
because
9
00:00:29.960 --> 00:00:31.560
we have had a bunch of rain.
10
00:00:31.560 --> 00:00:36.510
So the sand is really thick and you can see even if I step on it a bunch, I can
11
00:00:36.510 --> 00:00:36.840
't even
12
00:00:36.840 --> 00:00:41.720
get the sand or the ball below the height of the sand.
13
00:00:41.720 --> 00:00:42.720
But we'll make do.
14
00:00:42.720 --> 00:00:46.280
We'll talk about the technique and we'll demonstrate anyway.
15
00:00:46.280 --> 00:00:50.900
So here we've got a plug lie and the general principle here is I have to get
16
00:00:50.900 --> 00:00:51.720
underneath
17
00:00:51.720 --> 00:00:55.320
the golf ball in order to have the sand pop it up.
18
00:00:55.320 --> 00:01:02.190
So if I was right here and I took my normal bunker shot technique out of this
19
00:01:02.190 --> 00:01:03.320
thick sand
20
00:01:03.320 --> 00:01:09.100
or heavy sand, the golf club is only going down a small amount even on a pretty
21
00:01:09.100 --> 00:01:09.560
good
22
00:01:09.560 --> 00:01:15.040
shot if I was going to feel like I was going to get underneath this.
23
00:01:15.040 --> 00:01:17.720
You can see that that only went down maybe a centimeter.
24
00:01:17.720 --> 00:01:23.000
Well, the golf ball is over an inch deep or over an inch in height.
25
00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:28.280
If the top of the ball is at the height of the sand, I've got to increase the
26
00:01:28.280 --> 00:01:28.440
depth
27
00:01:28.440 --> 00:01:29.680
a bunch.
28
00:01:29.680 --> 00:01:33.640
So now in theory, I could just lower myself down.
29
00:01:33.640 --> 00:01:36.970
But typically if I was to do that, I would have to contact the sand so far
30
00:01:36.970 --> 00:01:37.520
behind it
31
00:01:37.520 --> 00:01:39.760
would run out of energy.
32
00:01:39.760 --> 00:01:43.420
So typically what we have to do is we have to get steep and we have to get deep
33
00:01:43.420 --> 00:01:44.120
underneath
34
00:01:44.120 --> 00:01:45.600
the golf ball.
35
00:01:45.600 --> 00:01:47.560
So there's two ways that I teach this.
36
00:01:47.560 --> 00:01:53.230
One is kind of your easy stock plug lie that I think most people have heard
37
00:01:53.230 --> 00:01:54.040
before which
38
00:01:54.040 --> 00:01:55.200
is close the face.
39
00:01:55.200 --> 00:01:57.000
We're going to take away bounce.
40
00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:01.880
So if I step on this one, I've got to get this to get underneath the golf ball.
41
00:02:01.880 --> 00:02:05.180
If I take away bounce, what's going to happen is this is just going to dig
42
00:02:05.180 --> 00:02:06.120
straight down.
43
00:02:06.120 --> 00:02:11.400
You can see compared to my original bunker shot, that's going to get a whole
44
00:02:11.400 --> 00:02:12.360
lot deeper.
45
00:02:12.360 --> 00:02:16.500
I would also advocate getting a little bit closer so that I can get steeper,
46
00:02:16.500 --> 00:02:17.060
play the
47
00:02:17.060 --> 00:02:20.360
ball, touch more back and lean a little bit more left.
48
00:02:20.360 --> 00:02:25.270
If I do all those, again, this isn't perfect sand for demonstrating this, but I
49
00:02:25.270 --> 00:02:26.040
've closed
50
00:02:26.040 --> 00:02:28.360
the face, popped it up.
51
00:02:28.360 --> 00:02:32.640
It's going to come out low and it's going to tend to have a bunch of run to it.
52
00:02:32.640 --> 00:02:37.920
So the problem becomes if you have to hit it to a closer flag, it's virtually
53
00:02:37.920 --> 00:02:38.400
impossible
54
00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:39.880
using that technique.
55
00:02:39.880 --> 00:02:45.550
But that is what I would consider the safest and the simplest way to hit these
56
00:02:45.550 --> 00:02:46.200
plugged
57
00:02:46.200 --> 00:02:47.920
lie shots.
58
00:02:47.920 --> 00:02:52.630
Close the face, lean a little bit more left, hands a little bit closer, chop
59
00:02:52.630 --> 00:02:53.360
down and it's
60
00:02:53.360 --> 00:02:55.320
going to pop out and it's going to knuckle.
61
00:02:55.320 --> 00:02:58.420
So you just have to get used to how much that's going to roll, but you can see
62
00:02:58.420 --> 00:02:59.240
how much deeper
63
00:02:59.240 --> 00:03:01.720
that was than my stock shot.
64
00:03:01.720 --> 00:03:06.200
The more advanced way of hitting the shot if I want to try to get some height
65
00:03:06.200 --> 00:03:07.000
is a riskier
66
00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:10.370
technique where basically I'm going to try, I'm going to get steep, but I'm
67
00:03:10.370 --> 00:03:11.020
still going
68
00:03:11.020 --> 00:03:12.520
to have the club face open.
69
00:03:12.520 --> 00:03:16.390
Now opening the club face tends to make the expose more bounce so the club
70
00:03:16.390 --> 00:03:17.120
doesn't get
71
00:03:17.120 --> 00:03:18.120
as deep.
72
00:03:18.120 --> 00:03:23.060
So in order to counteract that, I'm going to lower the handle a bunch and try
73
00:03:23.060 --> 00:03:23.560
to hit
74
00:03:23.560 --> 00:03:25.840
the heel into the sand.
75
00:03:25.840 --> 00:03:30.050
Remember the toe, if you remember from the hard pan video, the toe tends to
76
00:03:30.050 --> 00:03:30.840
skim really
77
00:03:30.840 --> 00:03:31.840
well.
78
00:03:31.840 --> 00:03:37.840
You're on when I was on the east coast and you would play in the winter, that
79
00:03:37.840 --> 00:03:40.160
firm sand,
80
00:03:40.160 --> 00:03:43.610
opening the face, but playing it off the toe, getting a little bit steeper,
81
00:03:43.610 --> 00:03:44.160
that can be
82
00:03:44.160 --> 00:03:49.430
one way to make sure that it's not going to dig so you can get a little bit st
83
00:03:49.430 --> 00:03:50.000
eeper and
84
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:53.160
just kind of slide the club underneath the golf ball.
85
00:03:53.160 --> 00:03:55.600
Well here, I need to get the opposite to happen.
86
00:03:55.600 --> 00:04:00.760
So now if I open the face, but I lower it so the toe is off the ground and then
87
00:04:00.760 --> 00:04:01.120
I get
88
00:04:01.120 --> 00:04:05.750
still vertical, you'll see that got about the same depth as the one where I had
89
00:04:05.750 --> 00:04:06.080
the
90
00:04:06.080 --> 00:04:07.080
closed face.
91
00:04:07.080 --> 00:04:11.120
So there's a little bit more of a risky or advanced option.
92
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:15.350
So I'm going to get hands really low so the toe is off the ground, even though
93
00:04:15.350 --> 00:04:15.880
the club
94
00:04:15.880 --> 00:04:17.480
face is open.
95
00:04:17.480 --> 00:04:27.520
And then I'm going to try and go super vertical and hit the heel into the sand.
96
00:04:27.520 --> 00:04:31.800
I didn't quite get the height I was going for, it came out you saw.
97
00:04:31.800 --> 00:04:36.580
Let's see if we can do that one more time, try to get a little bit better
98
00:04:36.580 --> 00:04:37.400
height.
99
00:04:37.400 --> 00:04:44.100
So toe off the ground, pick that straight up, hold that face open, dig like
100
00:04:44.100 --> 00:04:45.040
crazy.
101
00:04:45.040 --> 00:04:48.040
So straight up, there we go.
102
00:04:48.040 --> 00:04:56.150
So that probably rolled less than half as far as the club, the closed club face
103
00:04:56.150 --> 00:04:58.120
version.
104
00:04:58.120 --> 00:05:01.680
Again, it's definitely a riskier shot.
105
00:05:01.680 --> 00:05:05.760
Let's kick up a little bit sand so maybe we can demonstrate one more.
106
00:05:05.760 --> 00:05:09.170
Occasionally you can get it out of the fluffier sand, you can get this to
107
00:05:09.170 --> 00:05:10.200
actually pop up
108
00:05:10.200 --> 00:05:14.530
pretty good where maybe it'll roll 10 feet when it releases where the closed
109
00:05:14.530 --> 00:05:15.080
club face
110
00:05:15.080 --> 00:05:21.120
version, depending on the green speeds, it can really take off and roll 10
111
00:05:21.120 --> 00:05:22.560
yards, 20
112
00:05:22.560 --> 00:05:27.840
yards, it doesn't work when the club is where when the pin is very close.
113
00:05:27.840 --> 00:05:32.170
So we're going to try that one more time, toe off the ground, almost straight
114
00:05:32.170 --> 00:05:32.600
up and
115
00:05:32.600 --> 00:05:34.600
down.
116
00:05:34.600 --> 00:05:42.620
Club face open, really dig the heel in, not bad, that has a little bit more pop
117
00:05:42.620 --> 00:05:43.360
and has
118
00:05:43.360 --> 00:05:45.320
a chance of stopping.
119
00:05:45.320 --> 00:05:49.100
So that's a riskier one, but if you're kind of a better player and you want to
120
00:05:49.100 --> 00:05:49.600
have that
121
00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:54.320
option, I would highly recommend the heel dig for the plugged lie.
122
00:05:54.320 --> 00:05:59.990
If you're more of a casual golfer, then always default to the simplest version,
123
00:05:59.990 --> 00:06:00.680
which is
124
00:06:00.680 --> 00:06:05.390
the closed club face, lean forward, takes almost no technique, but that is
125
00:06:05.390 --> 00:06:06.000
going to
126
00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:09.990
run a bunch so it's just know that you're going to have to land it well short
127
00:06:09.990 --> 00:06:10.520
of your
128
00:06:10.520 --> 00:06:15.360
target and count on a lot of roll.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.060
This content video is discussing the plug lie.
2
00:00:08.060 --> 00:00:15.210
So the plug lie bunker shot typically happens when the ball hits into fluffier
3
00:00:15.210 --> 00:00:16.240
sand.
4
00:00:16.240 --> 00:00:20.660
Typically when you have a shot that has a lot of spin and the sand is deep and
5
00:00:20.660 --> 00:00:21.160
fluffy
6
00:00:21.160 --> 00:00:24.720
and the ball just kind of sits down below the surface.
7
00:00:24.720 --> 00:00:29.960
So in order to hit the shot, this is not going to be a perfect demonstration
8
00:00:29.960 --> 00:00:29.960
because
9
00:00:29.960 --> 00:00:31.560
we have had a bunch of rain.
10
00:00:31.560 --> 00:00:36.510
So the sand is really thick and you can see even if I step on it a bunch, I can
11
00:00:36.510 --> 00:00:36.840
't even
12
00:00:36.840 --> 00:00:41.720
get the sand or the ball below the height of the sand.
13
00:00:41.720 --> 00:00:42.720
But we'll make do.
14
00:00:42.720 --> 00:00:46.280
We'll talk about the technique and we'll demonstrate anyway.
15
00:00:46.280 --> 00:00:50.900
So here we've got a plug lie and the general principle here is I have to get
16
00:00:50.900 --> 00:00:51.720
underneath
17
00:00:51.720 --> 00:00:55.320
the golf ball in order to have the sand pop it up.
18
00:00:55.320 --> 00:01:02.190
So if I was right here and I took my normal bunker shot technique out of this
19
00:01:02.190 --> 00:01:03.320
thick sand
20
00:01:03.320 --> 00:01:09.100
or heavy sand, the golf club is only going down a small amount even on a pretty
21
00:01:09.100 --> 00:01:09.560
good
22
00:01:09.560 --> 00:01:15.040
shot if I was going to feel like I was going to get underneath this.
23
00:01:15.040 --> 00:01:17.720
You can see that that only went down maybe a centimeter.
24
00:01:17.720 --> 00:01:23.000
Well, the golf ball is over an inch deep or over an inch in height.
25
00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:28.280
If the top of the ball is at the height of the sand, I've got to increase the
26
00:01:28.280 --> 00:01:28.440
depth
27
00:01:28.440 --> 00:01:29.680
a bunch.
28
00:01:29.680 --> 00:01:33.640
So now in theory, I could just lower myself down.
29
00:01:33.640 --> 00:01:36.970
But typically if I was to do that, I would have to contact the sand so far
30
00:01:36.970 --> 00:01:37.520
behind it
31
00:01:37.520 --> 00:01:39.760
would run out of energy.
32
00:01:39.760 --> 00:01:43.420
So typically what we have to do is we have to get steep and we have to get deep
33
00:01:43.420 --> 00:01:44.120
underneath
34
00:01:44.120 --> 00:01:45.600
the golf ball.
35
00:01:45.600 --> 00:01:47.560
So there's two ways that I teach this.
36
00:01:47.560 --> 00:01:53.230
One is kind of your easy stock plug lie that I think most people have heard
37
00:01:53.230 --> 00:01:54.040
before which
38
00:01:54.040 --> 00:01:55.200
is close the face.
39
00:01:55.200 --> 00:01:57.000
We're going to take away bounce.
40
00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:01.880
So if I step on this one, I've got to get this to get underneath the golf ball.
41
00:02:01.880 --> 00:02:05.180
If I take away bounce, what's going to happen is this is just going to dig
42
00:02:05.180 --> 00:02:06.120
straight down.
43
00:02:06.120 --> 00:02:11.400
You can see compared to my original bunker shot, that's going to get a whole
44
00:02:11.400 --> 00:02:12.360
lot deeper.
45
00:02:12.360 --> 00:02:16.500
I would also advocate getting a little bit closer so that I can get steeper,
46
00:02:16.500 --> 00:02:17.060
play the
47
00:02:17.060 --> 00:02:20.360
ball, touch more back and lean a little bit more left.
48
00:02:20.360 --> 00:02:25.270
If I do all those, again, this isn't perfect sand for demonstrating this, but I
49
00:02:25.270 --> 00:02:26.040
've closed
50
00:02:26.040 --> 00:02:28.360
the face, popped it up.
51
00:02:28.360 --> 00:02:32.640
It's going to come out low and it's going to tend to have a bunch of run to it.
52
00:02:32.640 --> 00:02:37.920
So the problem becomes if you have to hit it to a closer flag, it's virtually
53
00:02:37.920 --> 00:02:38.400
impossible
54
00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:39.880
using that technique.
55
00:02:39.880 --> 00:02:45.550
But that is what I would consider the safest and the simplest way to hit these
56
00:02:45.550 --> 00:02:46.200
plugged
57
00:02:46.200 --> 00:02:47.920
lie shots.
58
00:02:47.920 --> 00:02:52.630
Close the face, lean a little bit more left, hands a little bit closer, chop
59
00:02:52.630 --> 00:02:53.360
down and it's
60
00:02:53.360 --> 00:02:55.320
going to pop out and it's going to knuckle.
61
00:02:55.320 --> 00:02:58.420
So you just have to get used to how much that's going to roll, but you can see
62
00:02:58.420 --> 00:02:59.240
how much deeper
63
00:02:59.240 --> 00:03:01.720
that was than my stock shot.
64
00:03:01.720 --> 00:03:06.200
The more advanced way of hitting the shot if I want to try to get some height
65
00:03:06.200 --> 00:03:07.000
is a riskier
66
00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:10.370
technique where basically I'm going to try, I'm going to get steep, but I'm
67
00:03:10.370 --> 00:03:11.020
still going
68
00:03:11.020 --> 00:03:12.520
to have the club face open.
69
00:03:12.520 --> 00:03:16.390
Now opening the club face tends to make the expose more bounce so the club
70
00:03:16.390 --> 00:03:17.120
doesn't get
71
00:03:17.120 --> 00:03:18.120
as deep.
72
00:03:18.120 --> 00:03:23.060
So in order to counteract that, I'm going to lower the handle a bunch and try
73
00:03:23.060 --> 00:03:23.560
to hit
74
00:03:23.560 --> 00:03:25.840
the heel into the sand.
75
00:03:25.840 --> 00:03:30.050
Remember the toe, if you remember from the hard pan video, the toe tends to
76
00:03:30.050 --> 00:03:30.840
skim really
77
00:03:30.840 --> 00:03:31.840
well.
78
00:03:31.840 --> 00:03:37.840
You're on when I was on the east coast and you would play in the winter, that
79
00:03:37.840 --> 00:03:40.160
firm sand,
80
00:03:40.160 --> 00:03:43.610
opening the face, but playing it off the toe, getting a little bit steeper,
81
00:03:43.610 --> 00:03:44.160
that can be
82
00:03:44.160 --> 00:03:49.430
one way to make sure that it's not going to dig so you can get a little bit st
83
00:03:49.430 --> 00:03:50.000
eeper and
84
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:53.160
just kind of slide the club underneath the golf ball.
85
00:03:53.160 --> 00:03:55.600
Well here, I need to get the opposite to happen.
86
00:03:55.600 --> 00:04:00.760
So now if I open the face, but I lower it so the toe is off the ground and then
87
00:04:00.760 --> 00:04:01.120
I get
88
00:04:01.120 --> 00:04:05.750
still vertical, you'll see that got about the same depth as the one where I had
89
00:04:05.750 --> 00:04:06.080
the
90
00:04:06.080 --> 00:04:07.080
closed face.
91
00:04:07.080 --> 00:04:11.120
So there's a little bit more of a risky or advanced option.
92
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:15.350
So I'm going to get hands really low so the toe is off the ground, even though
93
00:04:15.350 --> 00:04:15.880
the club
94
00:04:15.880 --> 00:04:17.480
face is open.
95
00:04:17.480 --> 00:04:27.520
And then I'm going to try and go super vertical and hit the heel into the sand.
96
00:04:27.520 --> 00:04:31.800
I didn't quite get the height I was going for, it came out you saw.
97
00:04:31.800 --> 00:04:36.580
Let's see if we can do that one more time, try to get a little bit better
98
00:04:36.580 --> 00:04:37.400
height.
99
00:04:37.400 --> 00:04:44.100
So toe off the ground, pick that straight up, hold that face open, dig like
100
00:04:44.100 --> 00:04:45.040
crazy.
101
00:04:45.040 --> 00:04:48.040
So straight up, there we go.
102
00:04:48.040 --> 00:04:56.150
So that probably rolled less than half as far as the club, the closed club face
103
00:04:56.150 --> 00:04:58.120
version.
104
00:04:58.120 --> 00:05:01.680
Again, it's definitely a riskier shot.
105
00:05:01.680 --> 00:05:05.760
Let's kick up a little bit sand so maybe we can demonstrate one more.
106
00:05:05.760 --> 00:05:09.170
Occasionally you can get it out of the fluffier sand, you can get this to
107
00:05:09.170 --> 00:05:10.200
actually pop up
108
00:05:10.200 --> 00:05:14.530
pretty good where maybe it'll roll 10 feet when it releases where the closed
109
00:05:14.530 --> 00:05:15.080
club face
110
00:05:15.080 --> 00:05:21.120
version, depending on the green speeds, it can really take off and roll 10
111
00:05:21.120 --> 00:05:22.560
yards, 20
112
00:05:22.560 --> 00:05:27.840
yards, it doesn't work when the club is where when the pin is very close.
113
00:05:27.840 --> 00:05:32.170
So we're going to try that one more time, toe off the ground, almost straight
114
00:05:32.170 --> 00:05:32.600
up and
115
00:05:32.600 --> 00:05:34.600
down.
116
00:05:34.600 --> 00:05:42.620
Club face open, really dig the heel in, not bad, that has a little bit more pop
117
00:05:42.620 --> 00:05:43.360
and has
118
00:05:43.360 --> 00:05:45.320
a chance of stopping.
119
00:05:45.320 --> 00:05:49.100
So that's a riskier one, but if you're kind of a better player and you want to
120
00:05:49.100 --> 00:05:49.600
have that
121
00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:54.320
option, I would highly recommend the heel dig for the plugged lie.
122
00:05:54.320 --> 00:05:59.990
If you're more of a casual golfer, then always default to the simplest version,
123
00:05:59.990 --> 00:06:00.680
which is
124
00:06:00.680 --> 00:06:05.390
the closed club face, lean forward, takes almost no technique, but that is
125
00:06:05.390 --> 00:06:06.000
going to
126
00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:09.990
run a bunch so it's just know that you're going to have to land it well short
127
00:06:09.990 --> 00:06:10.520
of your
128
00:06:10.520 --> 00:06:15.360
target and count on a lot of roll.
