Use low-point chicken to help refine your sand entry point location
Low point chicken is a goldilocks style game where you try to push your sand contact awareness and your set-up comfort level in order to refine your entry point control. In this game, your goal is to make swings where each swing you get the sand contact slightly closer to the golf ball. Your goals is to start as far behind the ball as you can and work your way to where you are catching the shot slightly thin!

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.600
This drill is low point chicken.
2
00:00:07.600 --> 00:00:13.550
So low point chicken is a game that I'll use of basically seeing how close or
3
00:00:13.550 --> 00:00:14.440
how far away
4
00:00:14.440 --> 00:00:18.880
from the golf ball can I hit it and still get a reasonable shot.
5
00:00:18.880 --> 00:00:22.280
This varies a lot with the sand type that you're on.
6
00:00:22.280 --> 00:00:24.760
So we had some rain, this is kind of packed down.
7
00:00:24.760 --> 00:00:27.800
So I'm not going to have as big a margin as say if I was playing in some really
8
00:00:27.800 --> 00:00:28.120
sugary
9
00:00:28.120 --> 00:00:32.820
fine sand where I might be able to hit four or five inches behind the golf ball
10
00:00:32.820 --> 00:00:33.080
and still
11
00:00:33.080 --> 00:00:34.080
hit a good shot.
12
00:00:34.080 --> 00:00:36.560
This is going to be a little bit tougher but hopefully you'll get the gist of
13
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:36.960
this game
14
00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:40.500
and you can experiment with it at your home course and then you'll have a
15
00:00:40.500 --> 00:00:41.240
reference for
16
00:00:41.240 --> 00:00:43.960
when you go and play at other courses.
17
00:00:43.960 --> 00:00:48.360
So I've got my low point lines, one in front, one behind.
18
00:00:48.360 --> 00:00:54.460
And what I'm going to do is I'm going to set up to the line and just get my
19
00:00:54.460 --> 00:00:55.520
base line.
20
00:00:55.520 --> 00:00:58.560
So that hit pretty close to the back edge of the line.
21
00:00:58.560 --> 00:01:02.640
I'm a little erred on behind it today.
22
00:01:02.640 --> 00:01:06.600
But now what I'm going to do is I'm going to set up just a little bit behind
23
00:01:06.600 --> 00:01:08.160
the line.
24
00:01:08.160 --> 00:01:09.160
Good.
25
00:01:09.160 --> 00:01:14.330
I'm just calibrating making sure that where I'm setting up is roughly where I'm
26
00:01:14.330 --> 00:01:14.420
making
27
00:01:14.420 --> 00:01:15.800
contact with the sand.
28
00:01:15.800 --> 00:01:20.960
So now my goal is to start as far back as I can and work my way up.
29
00:01:20.960 --> 00:01:24.470
Typically when I hit well behind the golf ball it's going to come out a little
30
00:01:24.470 --> 00:01:25.040
bit lower
31
00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:26.040
unless it's fluffy sand.
32
00:01:26.040 --> 00:01:29.840
It's going to come out a little bit lower and have more release to it.
33
00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:34.360
So here's where the contact line is.
34
00:01:34.360 --> 00:01:38.280
I'm going to try, we're going to start, there's my target.
35
00:01:38.280 --> 00:01:43.600
So with this firm sand I feel like I'm really going to have to stay down to get
36
00:01:43.600 --> 00:01:44.560
underneath
37
00:01:44.560 --> 00:01:45.560
it.
38
00:01:45.560 --> 00:01:50.100
If you have a tendency to kind of come up, this drill can kind of put you in a
39
00:01:50.100 --> 00:01:50.760
pressure
40
00:01:50.760 --> 00:01:54.410
situation where you feel like you're going to want to come up so you can
41
00:01:54.410 --> 00:01:55.280
overcome that
42
00:01:55.280 --> 00:01:56.280
tendency.
43
00:01:56.280 --> 00:02:01.450
That's one of the goals of practice is to kind of figure out mental triggers
44
00:02:01.450 --> 00:02:01.840
that you
45
00:02:01.840 --> 00:02:04.600
can use to avoid your most common tendencies.
46
00:02:04.600 --> 00:02:09.080
All right, so we're going to set up this line that's well behind the golf ball.
47
00:02:09.080 --> 00:02:15.840
Just kind of a normal bunker swing, normal bunker shot.
48
00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:19.680
So like we said, so I hit right at that line, that was pretty good.
49
00:02:19.680 --> 00:02:22.600
And like I said, that's going to come out a little bit lower and have a little
50
00:02:22.600 --> 00:02:23.200
bit more
51
00:02:23.200 --> 00:02:24.200
run.
52
00:02:24.200 --> 00:02:27.450
But I did still get the bottom of the swing just slightly ahead of the golf
53
00:02:27.450 --> 00:02:27.920
ball.
54
00:02:27.920 --> 00:02:29.800
That was a reasonable shot.
55
00:02:29.800 --> 00:02:32.240
So far past level one.
56
00:02:32.240 --> 00:02:34.160
Now I'm going to cut that in half.
57
00:02:34.160 --> 00:02:39.550
So I'm going to move it about a full bounce width or an inch closer to the golf
58
00:02:39.550 --> 00:02:40.280
ball.
59
00:02:40.280 --> 00:02:47.520
Try to make similar swing.
60
00:02:47.520 --> 00:02:52.720
So that's a lot closer to kind of my normal hitting two inches behind the golf
61
00:02:52.720 --> 00:02:53.400
ball.
62
00:02:53.400 --> 00:02:57.800
But now where this is where the scary stuff comes into play, now I'm going to
63
00:02:57.800 --> 00:02:58.520
try to get
64
00:02:58.520 --> 00:03:03.880
it right behind the golf ball as close as I can to the golf ball.
65
00:03:03.880 --> 00:03:09.050
And what I'm doing with this is I'm trying to use my setup to change the stroke
66
00:03:09.050 --> 00:03:09.240
and get
67
00:03:09.240 --> 00:03:12.720
really aware of where the sand contact is.
68
00:03:12.720 --> 00:03:16.410
I find a lot of amateur golfers when they're practicing, they're not really
69
00:03:16.410 --> 00:03:17.440
paying attention
70
00:03:17.440 --> 00:03:19.320
to where the club is hitting the sand.
71
00:03:19.320 --> 00:03:21.720
They're just focusing on if they hit a good shot or not.
72
00:03:21.720 --> 00:03:26.000
And so this can help you get more comfortable with what do you do if you're
73
00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:26.920
falling into
74
00:03:26.920 --> 00:03:30.720
a tendency where you're kind of having some low point issues.
75
00:03:30.720 --> 00:03:34.470
How can you find more of a comfortable zone and maybe play a safe shot to help
76
00:03:34.470 --> 00:03:34.960
you get
77
00:03:34.960 --> 00:03:38.000
through the round until you have time to work on it a little bit more.
78
00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:39.000
All right.
79
00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:40.000
That's enough stalling.
80
00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:48.140
Let's set up to this close line here, see if we can almost clip the ball.
81
00:03:48.140 --> 00:03:50.120
Let's see.
82
00:03:50.120 --> 00:03:55.960
So, and you'll see that's going to have the most spin.
83
00:03:55.960 --> 00:03:58.200
I still hit a tiny bit before.
84
00:03:58.200 --> 00:03:59.720
I didn't quite hear the ball.
85
00:03:59.720 --> 00:04:02.520
I was happy with the shot.
86
00:04:02.520 --> 00:04:04.040
Happy I didn't blade it.
87
00:04:04.040 --> 00:04:06.960
But let's see if we can push that even a little bit closer.
88
00:04:06.960 --> 00:04:11.600
I'm going to put that line right at the back edge of the ball.
89
00:04:11.600 --> 00:04:16.000
So, potentially this could be a pick shot.
90
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:17.000
I might blade this.
91
00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:21.170
Eventually, you've got to push your comfort zone and get a little bit too close
92
00:04:21.170 --> 00:04:21.600
to the
93
00:04:21.600 --> 00:04:25.080
golf ball when you're playing low point chicken.
94
00:04:25.080 --> 00:04:26.080
Okay.
95
00:04:26.080 --> 00:04:30.400
Ah, whisked out.
96
00:04:30.400 --> 00:04:34.720
You probably saw I kind of fell back on it a little bit.
97
00:04:34.720 --> 00:04:42.280
So that's where I fall into maybe I'm not quite as comfortable trying to clip
98
00:04:42.280 --> 00:04:42.960
the ball or
99
00:04:42.960 --> 00:04:44.680
pick the ball.
100
00:04:44.680 --> 00:04:47.940
But now I have kind of like a goldy log zone where that made me a little too
101
00:04:47.940 --> 00:04:48.960
uncomfortable.
102
00:04:48.960 --> 00:04:52.560
Hey, that one where I played an inch behind it, maybe even two inches behind it
103
00:04:52.560 --> 00:04:53.040
, I felt
104
00:04:53.040 --> 00:04:54.040
pretty comfortable.
105
00:04:54.040 --> 00:04:56.880
And then when I was four inches behind, that also made me uncomfortable.
106
00:04:56.880 --> 00:04:57.880
So this can help you.
107
00:04:57.880 --> 00:05:01.420
This low point chicken game can kind of help you get more comfortable with a
108
00:05:01.420 --> 00:05:02.080
range you can
109
00:05:02.080 --> 00:05:05.400
place play from rather than just trying to do the optimal.
110
00:05:05.400 --> 00:05:09.530
I find that that if you have a range that gives you more day to day variability
111
00:05:09.530 --> 00:05:10.080
instead
112
00:05:10.080 --> 00:05:13.710
of trying to think of the perfect distance every single time you hit a bunker
113
00:05:13.710 --> 00:05:14.200
shot.
114
00:05:14.200 --> 00:05:17.320
All right, let's see, we'll try one more of those.
115
00:05:17.320 --> 00:05:20.560
See if we can kind of clip it.
116
00:05:20.560 --> 00:05:25.680
Oh, that hit really close to it.
117
00:05:25.680 --> 00:05:26.680
Not today.
118
00:05:26.680 --> 00:05:32.200
Can't make ball first.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.600
This drill is low point chicken.
2
00:00:07.600 --> 00:00:13.550
So low point chicken is a game that I'll use of basically seeing how close or
3
00:00:13.550 --> 00:00:14.440
how far away
4
00:00:14.440 --> 00:00:18.880
from the golf ball can I hit it and still get a reasonable shot.
5
00:00:18.880 --> 00:00:22.280
This varies a lot with the sand type that you're on.
6
00:00:22.280 --> 00:00:24.760
So we had some rain, this is kind of packed down.
7
00:00:24.760 --> 00:00:27.800
So I'm not going to have as big a margin as say if I was playing in some really
8
00:00:27.800 --> 00:00:28.120
sugary
9
00:00:28.120 --> 00:00:32.820
fine sand where I might be able to hit four or five inches behind the golf ball
10
00:00:32.820 --> 00:00:33.080
and still
11
00:00:33.080 --> 00:00:34.080
hit a good shot.
12
00:00:34.080 --> 00:00:36.560
This is going to be a little bit tougher but hopefully you'll get the gist of
13
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:36.960
this game
14
00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:40.500
and you can experiment with it at your home course and then you'll have a
15
00:00:40.500 --> 00:00:41.240
reference for
16
00:00:41.240 --> 00:00:43.960
when you go and play at other courses.
17
00:00:43.960 --> 00:00:48.360
So I've got my low point lines, one in front, one behind.
18
00:00:48.360 --> 00:00:54.460
And what I'm going to do is I'm going to set up to the line and just get my
19
00:00:54.460 --> 00:00:55.520
base line.
20
00:00:55.520 --> 00:00:58.560
So that hit pretty close to the back edge of the line.
21
00:00:58.560 --> 00:01:02.640
I'm a little erred on behind it today.
22
00:01:02.640 --> 00:01:06.600
But now what I'm going to do is I'm going to set up just a little bit behind
23
00:01:06.600 --> 00:01:08.160
the line.
24
00:01:08.160 --> 00:01:09.160
Good.
25
00:01:09.160 --> 00:01:14.330
I'm just calibrating making sure that where I'm setting up is roughly where I'm
26
00:01:14.330 --> 00:01:14.420
making
27
00:01:14.420 --> 00:01:15.800
contact with the sand.
28
00:01:15.800 --> 00:01:20.960
So now my goal is to start as far back as I can and work my way up.
29
00:01:20.960 --> 00:01:24.470
Typically when I hit well behind the golf ball it's going to come out a little
30
00:01:24.470 --> 00:01:25.040
bit lower
31
00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:26.040
unless it's fluffy sand.
32
00:01:26.040 --> 00:01:29.840
It's going to come out a little bit lower and have more release to it.
33
00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:34.360
So here's where the contact line is.
34
00:01:34.360 --> 00:01:38.280
I'm going to try, we're going to start, there's my target.
35
00:01:38.280 --> 00:01:43.600
So with this firm sand I feel like I'm really going to have to stay down to get
36
00:01:43.600 --> 00:01:44.560
underneath
37
00:01:44.560 --> 00:01:45.560
it.
38
00:01:45.560 --> 00:01:50.100
If you have a tendency to kind of come up, this drill can kind of put you in a
39
00:01:50.100 --> 00:01:50.760
pressure
40
00:01:50.760 --> 00:01:54.410
situation where you feel like you're going to want to come up so you can
41
00:01:54.410 --> 00:01:55.280
overcome that
42
00:01:55.280 --> 00:01:56.280
tendency.
43
00:01:56.280 --> 00:02:01.450
That's one of the goals of practice is to kind of figure out mental triggers
44
00:02:01.450 --> 00:02:01.840
that you
45
00:02:01.840 --> 00:02:04.600
can use to avoid your most common tendencies.
46
00:02:04.600 --> 00:02:09.080
All right, so we're going to set up this line that's well behind the golf ball.
47
00:02:09.080 --> 00:02:15.840
Just kind of a normal bunker swing, normal bunker shot.
48
00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:19.680
So like we said, so I hit right at that line, that was pretty good.
49
00:02:19.680 --> 00:02:22.600
And like I said, that's going to come out a little bit lower and have a little
50
00:02:22.600 --> 00:02:23.200
bit more
51
00:02:23.200 --> 00:02:24.200
run.
52
00:02:24.200 --> 00:02:27.450
But I did still get the bottom of the swing just slightly ahead of the golf
53
00:02:27.450 --> 00:02:27.920
ball.
54
00:02:27.920 --> 00:02:29.800
That was a reasonable shot.
55
00:02:29.800 --> 00:02:32.240
So far past level one.
56
00:02:32.240 --> 00:02:34.160
Now I'm going to cut that in half.
57
00:02:34.160 --> 00:02:39.550
So I'm going to move it about a full bounce width or an inch closer to the golf
58
00:02:39.550 --> 00:02:40.280
ball.
59
00:02:40.280 --> 00:02:47.520
Try to make similar swing.
60
00:02:47.520 --> 00:02:52.720
So that's a lot closer to kind of my normal hitting two inches behind the golf
61
00:02:52.720 --> 00:02:53.400
ball.
62
00:02:53.400 --> 00:02:57.800
But now where this is where the scary stuff comes into play, now I'm going to
63
00:02:57.800 --> 00:02:58.520
try to get
64
00:02:58.520 --> 00:03:03.880
it right behind the golf ball as close as I can to the golf ball.
65
00:03:03.880 --> 00:03:09.050
And what I'm doing with this is I'm trying to use my setup to change the stroke
66
00:03:09.050 --> 00:03:09.240
and get
67
00:03:09.240 --> 00:03:12.720
really aware of where the sand contact is.
68
00:03:12.720 --> 00:03:16.410
I find a lot of amateur golfers when they're practicing, they're not really
69
00:03:16.410 --> 00:03:17.440
paying attention
70
00:03:17.440 --> 00:03:19.320
to where the club is hitting the sand.
71
00:03:19.320 --> 00:03:21.720
They're just focusing on if they hit a good shot or not.
72
00:03:21.720 --> 00:03:26.000
And so this can help you get more comfortable with what do you do if you're
73
00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:26.920
falling into
74
00:03:26.920 --> 00:03:30.720
a tendency where you're kind of having some low point issues.
75
00:03:30.720 --> 00:03:34.470
How can you find more of a comfortable zone and maybe play a safe shot to help
76
00:03:34.470 --> 00:03:34.960
you get
77
00:03:34.960 --> 00:03:38.000
through the round until you have time to work on it a little bit more.
78
00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:39.000
All right.
79
00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:40.000
That's enough stalling.
80
00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:48.140
Let's set up to this close line here, see if we can almost clip the ball.
81
00:03:48.140 --> 00:03:50.120
Let's see.
82
00:03:50.120 --> 00:03:55.960
So, and you'll see that's going to have the most spin.
83
00:03:55.960 --> 00:03:58.200
I still hit a tiny bit before.
84
00:03:58.200 --> 00:03:59.720
I didn't quite hear the ball.
85
00:03:59.720 --> 00:04:02.520
I was happy with the shot.
86
00:04:02.520 --> 00:04:04.040
Happy I didn't blade it.
87
00:04:04.040 --> 00:04:06.960
But let's see if we can push that even a little bit closer.
88
00:04:06.960 --> 00:04:11.600
I'm going to put that line right at the back edge of the ball.
89
00:04:11.600 --> 00:04:16.000
So, potentially this could be a pick shot.
90
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:17.000
I might blade this.
91
00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:21.170
Eventually, you've got to push your comfort zone and get a little bit too close
92
00:04:21.170 --> 00:04:21.600
to the
93
00:04:21.600 --> 00:04:25.080
golf ball when you're playing low point chicken.
94
00:04:25.080 --> 00:04:26.080
Okay.
95
00:04:26.080 --> 00:04:30.400
Ah, whisked out.
96
00:04:30.400 --> 00:04:34.720
You probably saw I kind of fell back on it a little bit.
97
00:04:34.720 --> 00:04:42.280
So that's where I fall into maybe I'm not quite as comfortable trying to clip
98
00:04:42.280 --> 00:04:42.960
the ball or
99
00:04:42.960 --> 00:04:44.680
pick the ball.
100
00:04:44.680 --> 00:04:47.940
But now I have kind of like a goldy log zone where that made me a little too
101
00:04:47.940 --> 00:04:48.960
uncomfortable.
102
00:04:48.960 --> 00:04:52.560
Hey, that one where I played an inch behind it, maybe even two inches behind it
103
00:04:52.560 --> 00:04:53.040
, I felt
104
00:04:53.040 --> 00:04:54.040
pretty comfortable.
105
00:04:54.040 --> 00:04:56.880
And then when I was four inches behind, that also made me uncomfortable.
106
00:04:56.880 --> 00:04:57.880
So this can help you.
107
00:04:57.880 --> 00:05:01.420
This low point chicken game can kind of help you get more comfortable with a
108
00:05:01.420 --> 00:05:02.080
range you can
109
00:05:02.080 --> 00:05:05.400
place play from rather than just trying to do the optimal.
110
00:05:05.400 --> 00:05:09.530
I find that that if you have a range that gives you more day to day variability
111
00:05:09.530 --> 00:05:10.080
instead
112
00:05:10.080 --> 00:05:13.710
of trying to think of the perfect distance every single time you hit a bunker
113
00:05:13.710 --> 00:05:14.200
shot.
114
00:05:14.200 --> 00:05:17.320
All right, let's see, we'll try one more of those.
115
00:05:17.320 --> 00:05:20.560
See if we can kind of clip it.
116
00:05:20.560 --> 00:05:25.680
Oh, that hit really close to it.
117
00:05:25.680 --> 00:05:26.680
Not today.
118
00:05:26.680 --> 00:05:32.200
Can't make ball first.
