The wipe is a key move for a lot of your golf shots, but not so in the bunker shot!

At GSA, we use the term "the wipe" to describe the motion of the arms and body sending the club in the direction of the target instead of the golf ball. This involves the trail arm working more in front of the body and the spine/core rotating to support it. But this combination creates a lot of shaft lean and lag. Neither of these things is desirable for the bunker shot. The bunker shot has more of a feel of a throw and coast, rather than a wipe and extend late.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.240
This concept video is there's no bunker wipe.

2
00:00:08.240 --> 00:00:13.430
So the bunker is one of the unique shots where we don't really want a wipe

3
00:00:13.430 --> 00:00:14.160
movement.

4
00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:17.800
Even in the distance wedge, maybe even a little bit in chipping.

5
00:00:17.800 --> 00:00:22.990
Anytime you want to create more of the power happening from your core and

6
00:00:22.990 --> 00:00:23.680
getting body

7
00:00:23.680 --> 00:00:26.820
rotation and some shaft lean, you're going to want to have a little bit of a

8
00:00:26.820 --> 00:00:27.240
wipe to

9
00:00:27.240 --> 00:00:28.960
offset it and balance it.

10
00:00:28.960 --> 00:00:33.230
So with the bunker shot, our goal is to hit behind it or hit a little bit fat

11
00:00:33.230 --> 00:00:33.680
and our

12
00:00:33.680 --> 00:00:38.220
goal is to have the club have very little, if any, shaft lean, maybe just a

13
00:00:38.220 --> 00:00:38.840
touch in

14
00:00:38.840 --> 00:00:43.320
order to get the bottom of the swing ahead of the golf ball, but not by much.

15
00:00:43.320 --> 00:00:48.800
So as the club is passing, that's happening primarily from lengthening the arms

16
00:00:48.800 --> 00:00:49.280
out in

17
00:00:49.280 --> 00:00:54.760
front of the body where the wipe will tend to create more leading edge contact

18
00:00:54.760 --> 00:00:56.560
and delay

19
00:00:56.560 --> 00:00:59.620
the club face catching up with your body.

20
00:00:59.620 --> 00:01:03.030
So this is one of the few shots where if you tend to get a little bit armsy,

21
00:01:03.030 --> 00:01:03.720
you can use

22
00:01:03.720 --> 00:01:05.520
that to your advantage.

23
00:01:05.520 --> 00:01:11.370
So one kind of like drill that I'll use for golfers who have been training the

24
00:01:11.370 --> 00:01:12.000
wipe and

25
00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:16.600
kind of get a little bit excessive with it or apply it here in the bunker,

26
00:01:16.600 --> 00:01:17.440
which we don't

27
00:01:17.440 --> 00:01:24.290
want, we're going to feel like the arm is just pinned to our side and we're

28
00:01:24.290 --> 00:01:25.120
going to

29
00:01:25.120 --> 00:01:29.840
try and we're not going to pull in and we're not going to kind of lift it up

30
00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:31.120
with the arms,

31
00:01:31.120 --> 00:01:35.090
but with the arm pinned to the side, we're going to feel like we straighten it

32
00:01:35.090 --> 00:01:35.560
and get

33
00:01:35.560 --> 00:01:37.400
a little bit of a scoop there.

34
00:01:37.400 --> 00:01:42.040
So you'll see when I finish, the arm is still in front of my body or on the

35
00:01:42.040 --> 00:01:42.760
right side of

36
00:01:42.760 --> 00:01:47.900
my body in front of the shoulder as opposed to pulled across like I might do if

37
00:01:47.900 --> 00:01:48.240
I was

38
00:01:48.240 --> 00:01:53.160
hitting more of a distance wedge or a fuller shot.

39
00:01:53.160 --> 00:01:58.350
So the general concept here is we want the release to happen in front of our

40
00:01:58.350 --> 00:01:59.120
chest instead

41
00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:03.240
of hitting the ball and then the club catching up with the chest.

42
00:02:03.240 --> 00:02:05.160
So there's no wipe in the bunker shot.

43
00:02:05.160 --> 00:02:09.540
A way that you can practice it, trail arm only works really well, but another

44
00:02:09.540 --> 00:02:10.000
one is

45
00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:15.320
actually kind of tucking your shirt or using a glove, which I forgot to bring,

46
00:02:15.320 --> 00:02:16.160
but pinning

47
00:02:16.160 --> 00:02:21.830
something more on that trail side and then feeling like it just kind of stays

48
00:02:21.830 --> 00:02:22.400
there and

49
00:02:22.400 --> 00:02:26.640
it releases while staying on the back side of your body.

50
00:02:26.640 --> 00:02:31.130
The emphasis here is not so much to keep the arm pinned because I've actually

51
00:02:31.130 --> 00:02:31.640
had some

52
00:02:31.640 --> 00:02:37.770
really good bunker players who tend to get almost a little bit cast-y, scoopy

53
00:02:37.770 --> 00:02:38.520
where that

54
00:02:38.520 --> 00:02:42.440
arm gets behind kind of like that.

55
00:02:42.440 --> 00:02:48.960
That is way more preferred than having an overactive body rotation and the arm

56
00:02:48.960 --> 00:02:49.760
getting

57
00:02:49.760 --> 00:02:53.880
way in front or doing more of a wipe action.

58
00:02:53.880 --> 00:02:56.520
You can see that's going to create some shaft lean.

59
00:02:56.520 --> 00:03:00.360
That is one way to hit kind of more of a picked spinning wedge shot, but that's

60
00:03:00.360 --> 00:03:00.600
not

61
00:03:00.600 --> 00:03:02.320
what you want for your default shot.

62
00:03:02.320 --> 00:03:05.420
So if you're struggling with contact double check and make sure you have an

63
00:03:05.420 --> 00:03:05.960
overdone, a

64
00:03:05.960 --> 00:03:09.400
good move for the full swing, the wipe because that can be a real contact

65
00:03:09.400 --> 00:03:10.200
killer here in

66
00:03:10.200 --> 00:03:11.440
the bunker.
