A special type of firm bunkers is the muddy bunkers you'll face in the winter time

When it's cold and bunkers aren't as maintained you'll often find yourself in muddy bunkers or bunkers similar to hardpan. A few adjustments will make it so that you can handle these bunkers with ease.

You'll want to swing a little steeper with a clubface that is a little more square (use less bounce). You can also error on playing the ball more off the toe where the bounce is the least. All of this will help you avoid blading the ball. Also, you'll want to swing a little easier than normal since the ball is going to come out hotter than it would under normal sand conditions.

Lastly, if you really struggle with this shot, and if the lip is really low, then you can always consider using your putter. Like a skateboard going up a half pipe, you'll be able to get the ball out with ease. It might be hard to control the distance, but it could help you avoid making a double or triple bogey.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.770
This video we're going to discuss hitting it out of a dirt or more of a mud

2
00:00:08.770 --> 00:00:09.800
bunker.

3
00:00:09.800 --> 00:00:13.120
So this is our fairway bunker near my training center.

4
00:00:13.120 --> 00:00:17.520
And we've had a bunch of rain, so they haven't tilled up the sand.

5
00:00:17.520 --> 00:00:18.680
It's very hard.

6
00:00:18.680 --> 00:00:23.180
You can see, if I get set up, I can dig my feet in a little bit, but the ball

7
00:00:23.180 --> 00:00:23.880
just kind

8
00:00:23.880 --> 00:00:30.580
of like if I swing through, it's more mud where the club barely digs there as

9
00:00:30.580 --> 00:00:31.440
opposed

10
00:00:31.440 --> 00:00:32.720
to sand.

11
00:00:32.720 --> 00:00:38.660
So this can cause a lot of golfers problems, especially if you have more of the

12
00:00:38.660 --> 00:00:39.400
classic

13
00:00:39.400 --> 00:00:43.220
case of having the bottom of the swing too far behind the ball, because what

14
00:00:43.220 --> 00:00:43.920
will happen

15
00:00:43.920 --> 00:00:46.640
is the club is going to tend to bounce off the sand.

16
00:00:46.640 --> 00:00:49.040
It's not going to dig very easily.

17
00:00:49.040 --> 00:00:54.220
So if it bottoms out behind, it will tend to come up into the golf ball like

18
00:00:54.220 --> 00:00:54.760
this.

19
00:00:54.760 --> 00:01:00.570
So you can see if I try and draw my line, it's actually hard for me to make a

20
00:01:00.570 --> 00:01:01.920
deep line.

21
00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:08.400
So the main principles here are what I tend to find is a lot of golfers tend to

22
00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:09.000
try to

23
00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:14.180
get more shallow and almost lift this up where because the surface is firm, it

24
00:01:14.180 --> 00:01:14.840
actually makes

25
00:01:14.840 --> 00:01:16.800
it easier to get steep.

26
00:01:16.800 --> 00:01:19.900
Typically, the times where you want to get more shallow is when the sand is

27
00:01:19.900 --> 00:01:20.480
more sugary

28
00:01:20.480 --> 00:01:22.080
or fluffy.

29
00:01:22.080 --> 00:01:24.920
So now I'll add a caveat to that.

30
00:01:24.920 --> 00:01:30.100
If you're really good at controlling your low point, then potentially you can

31
00:01:30.100 --> 00:01:30.760
almost pick

32
00:01:30.760 --> 00:01:33.000
the ball and get a little bit more shallow.

33
00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:38.140
But the risk here is opening the club face too much, which elevates, if you

34
00:01:38.140 --> 00:01:38.680
have a bunch

35
00:01:38.680 --> 00:01:40.520
of bounce, that elevates the leading edge.

36
00:01:40.520 --> 00:01:45.210
So if I open the club face and I hit a little bit behind it again, that's going

37
00:01:45.210 --> 00:01:46.200
to go straight

38
00:01:46.200 --> 00:01:47.200
up.

39
00:01:47.200 --> 00:01:51.040
It contacted the sand right there and just came up into the golf ball.

40
00:01:51.040 --> 00:01:54.240
So what I'm going to try to do is I'm going to try to air on getting a little

41
00:01:54.240 --> 00:01:54.720
bit more

42
00:01:54.720 --> 00:01:58.080
steep by changing a little bit my setup.

43
00:01:58.080 --> 00:02:01.600
I'm going to play the ball instead of in line with my left heel, I'm going to

44
00:02:01.600 --> 00:02:02.800
play it about

45
00:02:02.800 --> 00:02:04.760
an inch back or a ball back.

46
00:02:04.760 --> 00:02:08.810
I'm going to lean a little bit more and then I'm going to feel like I bring the

47
00:02:08.810 --> 00:02:09.520
club even

48
00:02:09.520 --> 00:02:12.680
more up or vertical.

49
00:02:12.680 --> 00:02:16.460
I can also air on hitting this more towards the toe, similar to what we do for

50
00:02:16.460 --> 00:02:16.940
the hard

51
00:02:16.940 --> 00:02:18.040
pan shot.

52
00:02:18.040 --> 00:02:23.170
So if I lean a little bit more left, still have the hands kind of in front of

53
00:02:23.170 --> 00:02:23.720
my body.

54
00:02:23.720 --> 00:02:26.200
So hands aren't way forward.

55
00:02:26.200 --> 00:02:32.200
But then stay left and get the contact point closer to the ball.

56
00:02:32.200 --> 00:02:36.920
So that only hit a good half inch behind.

57
00:02:36.920 --> 00:02:40.760
Typically I can still get underneath the golf ball and pop it up.

58
00:02:40.760 --> 00:02:44.850
And depending on how hard it is, like this has a crust but then underneath it

59
00:02:44.850 --> 00:02:45.400
there is

60
00:02:45.400 --> 00:02:48.920
a little bit of sand so it goes down but not too deep.

61
00:02:48.920 --> 00:02:50.600
So this technique works.

62
00:02:50.600 --> 00:02:54.570
You just have to experiment with the firmer the sand, typically the ball is

63
00:02:54.570 --> 00:02:55.320
going to come

64
00:02:55.320 --> 00:02:57.120
out faster.

65
00:02:57.120 --> 00:02:59.200
So I won't have to swing quite as hard.

66
00:02:59.200 --> 00:03:05.120
The ball will almost come out a little lower and a little bit faster.

67
00:03:05.120 --> 00:03:10.280
It feels like it takes less energy to get the same amount of distance or effort

68
00:03:10.280 --> 00:03:10.320
.

69
00:03:10.320 --> 00:03:12.960
So we've got our normal contact point.

70
00:03:12.960 --> 00:03:18.450
We're going to shift just slightly forward and then we're going to swing a

71
00:03:18.450 --> 00:03:19.320
little bit

72
00:03:19.320 --> 00:03:21.040
more vertically.

73
00:03:21.040 --> 00:03:25.480
This is one where I'll tend to stand just a touch closer to it.

74
00:03:25.480 --> 00:03:31.730
So my hands will be a little bit closer to me instead of when I get farther out

75
00:03:31.730 --> 00:03:32.520
that tends

76
00:03:32.520 --> 00:03:36.340
to help limit the depth, it's not the worst thing for this shot, especially I'm

77
00:03:36.340 --> 00:03:36.880
getting

78
00:03:36.880 --> 00:03:41.520
under this a little bit more than I thought that I might.

79
00:03:41.520 --> 00:03:47.500
So I could almost play my normal hand distance out of this shot and then just

80
00:03:47.500 --> 00:03:48.640
lean a little

81
00:03:48.640 --> 00:03:50.440
bit more left.

82
00:03:50.440 --> 00:03:55.690
You can see that one I actually caught ball first but because it was coming

83
00:03:55.690 --> 00:03:56.560
down steeply

84
00:03:56.560 --> 00:03:59.570
and the bottom of the swing was still just slightly ahead of the golf ball, it

85
00:03:59.570 --> 00:04:00.040
ended up

86
00:04:00.040 --> 00:04:05.180
being a pretty good shot, but the normal one out of this, I'm going to get a

87
00:04:05.180 --> 00:04:05.440
little bit

88
00:04:05.440 --> 00:04:10.620
closer to the golf ball, lean even a little bit more left, played off the

89
00:04:10.620 --> 00:04:11.360
slightly off

90
00:04:11.360 --> 00:04:17.520
the toe and then swing a little bit more, almost cut stroke, a little bit more

91
00:04:17.520 --> 00:04:18.080
up and

92
00:04:18.080 --> 00:04:22.000
a little bit more across, but really making sure that I come down steep.

93
00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:25.280
Like I said, the normal tendency I see is people try to get too shallow.

94
00:04:25.280 --> 00:04:29.640
The club bop skims off the sand and almost always blades it because it's really

95
00:04:29.640 --> 00:04:30.000
hard

96
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:31.440
to chunk in on this shot.

97
00:04:31.440 --> 00:04:34.630
So to avoid the chunk shot, we're going to lean a little bit left and get more

98
00:04:34.630 --> 00:04:35.200
steep.

99
00:04:35.200 --> 00:04:40.530
That's your simple recipe for handling the winter bunkers or when the bunker is

100
00:04:40.530 --> 00:04:40.960
more

101
00:04:40.960 --> 00:04:42.720
dirt or clay.

102
00:04:42.720 --> 00:04:45.280
One last little consideration.

103
00:04:45.280 --> 00:04:51.750
If you have very little lip like you have here, I won't go grab the putter but

104
00:04:51.750 --> 00:04:52.560
you can

105
00:04:52.560 --> 00:04:58.720
actually put the ball and it'll typically get out if you have a really low lip

106
00:04:58.720 --> 00:04:59.240
out of

107
00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:00.240
these firmer bunkers.

108
00:05:00.240 --> 00:05:03.760
That's one shot that you can go to if you're really having trouble with this

109
00:05:03.760 --> 00:05:04.720
steep mud bunker

110
00:05:04.720 --> 00:05:12.680
technique.
