Train your speed control by focusing on the end zone
The two main skills for distance control are training length of swing and tempo. End zone training can help you take those skills and make them feel like a more integrated athletic motion by focusing on the result of where you want the ball to end up.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.540
So this speed control game is end zone training.
2
00:00:08.540 --> 00:00:13.850
So what you'll see down there is I have an end zone or I have about a two foot
3
00:00:13.850 --> 00:00:14.700
target.
4
00:00:14.700 --> 00:00:20.010
So my goal is to strike putts from I've got this at 10 paces and I've got that
5
00:00:20.010 --> 00:00:22.600
at 15 paces.
6
00:00:22.600 --> 00:00:26.560
You can mix up the numbers and you can mix up the scoring but usually what I'll
7
00:00:26.560 --> 00:00:27.400
do is
8
00:00:27.400 --> 00:00:32.710
you get a point if you get it in the zone and you lose a point if you are out
9
00:00:32.710 --> 00:00:33.720
of the zone.
10
00:00:33.720 --> 00:00:39.050
So your goal, we've got two, four, six golf balls here, I would say from 30
11
00:00:39.050 --> 00:00:39.620
feet to get
12
00:00:39.620 --> 00:00:45.510
it inside two feet, my goal would be to finish, let's say at least plus one,
13
00:00:45.510 --> 00:00:46.760
maybe plus two.
14
00:00:46.760 --> 00:00:50.870
If I'm going back to 45 feet, I might say my goal is to finish at even because
15
00:00:50.870 --> 00:00:51.440
two feet
16
00:00:51.440 --> 00:00:53.920
from 45 feet is a pretty tough target.
17
00:00:53.920 --> 00:00:56.840
But I like to make it harder in practice than it will be on the course.
18
00:00:56.840 --> 00:01:02.040
If I can get all my 45 footers inside a two foot zone, then I'm doing great.
19
00:01:02.040 --> 00:01:06.000
If you have multiple distances that you're using, that can be really helpful
20
00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:06.960
for calibrating
21
00:01:06.960 --> 00:01:08.120
the length of the swing.
22
00:01:08.120 --> 00:01:15.240
So you can combo this with a 30 foot, 40 foot, 50 foot or 30, 35, 40 depending
23
00:01:15.240 --> 00:01:15.880
on how precise
24
00:01:15.880 --> 00:01:17.120
you want to get.
25
00:01:17.120 --> 00:01:25.290
So overall, I usually do this without a hole but you can put this around a hole
26
00:01:25.290 --> 00:01:25.800
.
27
00:01:25.800 --> 00:01:30.190
If you're going to do that, I would air on from a longer put, let's say six
28
00:01:30.190 --> 00:01:31.060
inches short
29
00:01:31.060 --> 00:01:33.840
to a foot and a half past or something like that.
30
00:01:33.840 --> 00:01:38.400
The other thing is I would usually use the same end zone from two different
31
00:01:38.400 --> 00:01:39.120
sides.
32
00:01:39.120 --> 00:01:43.320
So if I do this uphill downhill, that's a little bit harder than if I'm doing
33
00:01:43.320 --> 00:01:43.800
left to
34
00:01:43.800 --> 00:01:46.680
right break versus right to left break.
35
00:01:46.680 --> 00:01:49.950
But sometimes you will find that you have harder time with speed control on
36
00:01:49.950 --> 00:01:50.320
left to
37
00:01:50.320 --> 00:01:51.800
right versus right to left.
38
00:01:51.800 --> 00:01:54.560
This is one game that can help identify it.
39
00:01:54.560 --> 00:02:01.640
So I'm going to use my practice swings to kind of calibrate what's my 10 pace
40
00:02:01.640 --> 00:02:02.440
stroke
41
00:02:02.440 --> 00:02:08.240
which is about 15 inches or close to outer thigh.
42
00:02:08.240 --> 00:02:12.520
So let's see how we can do on our first go.
43
00:02:12.520 --> 00:02:15.600
Oh, they're a little quick today.
44
00:02:15.600 --> 00:02:20.080
So I'm already one down or minus one.
45
00:02:20.080 --> 00:02:26.160
So now let's see if we can go just a little bit softer.
46
00:02:26.160 --> 00:02:29.640
So that gets us one in the zone back to all square.
47
00:02:29.640 --> 00:02:38.480
So now we're going to try to recreate that and I'm using, oh, that's got to go.
48
00:02:38.480 --> 00:02:39.480
Got to go.
49
00:02:39.480 --> 00:02:44.780
I'm using some T clause so I have strings on the ground but you can just put T
50
00:02:44.780 --> 00:02:45.280
's or clubs
51
00:02:45.280 --> 00:02:49.440
on the ground that you would have to get it kind of in between creating a gate.
52
00:02:49.440 --> 00:02:52.700
I'm going to do it where you had to do, you had to roll it over a club or an
53
00:02:52.700 --> 00:02:53.360
alignment
54
00:02:53.360 --> 00:02:54.360
stick.
55
00:02:54.360 --> 00:03:00.400
Strings are great for rolling over and not having it disrupt speed.
56
00:03:00.400 --> 00:03:04.400
Oh, got lucky off that golf ball.
57
00:03:04.400 --> 00:03:05.880
So now I'm back to all square.
58
00:03:05.880 --> 00:03:11.360
I'm going to win this round, have to make this putt.
59
00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:15.320
Pulled it a little bit and that's going to be too long.
60
00:03:15.320 --> 00:03:22.880
So we've lost the first set if we're playing kind of keeping the tennis or the
61
00:03:22.880 --> 00:03:24.280
cricket analogy.
62
00:03:24.280 --> 00:03:27.680
That was going to be pretty good if it didn't hit that other wall.
63
00:03:27.680 --> 00:03:29.400
So I finished it even from 30 feet.
64
00:03:29.400 --> 00:03:31.760
That's not terrible on a two foot zone.
65
00:03:31.760 --> 00:03:35.520
One rough guide is about 10%.
66
00:03:35.520 --> 00:03:40.360
So if you're hitting a 60 footer, you could make the zone 6 feet.
67
00:03:40.360 --> 00:03:42.240
Another guide would be 7%.
68
00:03:42.240 --> 00:03:44.320
That would be kind of on the really tough upper end.
69
00:03:44.320 --> 00:03:47.520
So if you're 60 feet, you'd be at about four feet.
70
00:03:47.520 --> 00:03:52.950
So from 30 feet, and I'm getting it inside two feet, that's well within
71
00:03:52.950 --> 00:03:54.040
tolerance, I'd
72
00:03:54.040 --> 00:03:56.160
be pretty happy finishing positive here.
73
00:03:56.160 --> 00:04:01.560
So this is a great game, very distance, work on stroke length, committing to
74
00:04:01.560 --> 00:04:02.400
the stroke
75
00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:07.710
length and tempo to roll at a specific distance and get used to hitting to a
76
00:04:07.710 --> 00:04:08.400
finishing spot,
77
00:04:08.400 --> 00:04:14.160
just falling in love with a line and not thinking too much about speed.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.540
So this speed control game is end zone training.
2
00:00:08.540 --> 00:00:13.850
So what you'll see down there is I have an end zone or I have about a two foot
3
00:00:13.850 --> 00:00:14.700
target.
4
00:00:14.700 --> 00:00:20.010
So my goal is to strike putts from I've got this at 10 paces and I've got that
5
00:00:20.010 --> 00:00:22.600
at 15 paces.
6
00:00:22.600 --> 00:00:26.560
You can mix up the numbers and you can mix up the scoring but usually what I'll
7
00:00:26.560 --> 00:00:27.400
do is
8
00:00:27.400 --> 00:00:32.710
you get a point if you get it in the zone and you lose a point if you are out
9
00:00:32.710 --> 00:00:33.720
of the zone.
10
00:00:33.720 --> 00:00:39.050
So your goal, we've got two, four, six golf balls here, I would say from 30
11
00:00:39.050 --> 00:00:39.620
feet to get
12
00:00:39.620 --> 00:00:45.510
it inside two feet, my goal would be to finish, let's say at least plus one,
13
00:00:45.510 --> 00:00:46.760
maybe plus two.
14
00:00:46.760 --> 00:00:50.870
If I'm going back to 45 feet, I might say my goal is to finish at even because
15
00:00:50.870 --> 00:00:51.440
two feet
16
00:00:51.440 --> 00:00:53.920
from 45 feet is a pretty tough target.
17
00:00:53.920 --> 00:00:56.840
But I like to make it harder in practice than it will be on the course.
18
00:00:56.840 --> 00:01:02.040
If I can get all my 45 footers inside a two foot zone, then I'm doing great.
19
00:01:02.040 --> 00:01:06.000
If you have multiple distances that you're using, that can be really helpful
20
00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:06.960
for calibrating
21
00:01:06.960 --> 00:01:08.120
the length of the swing.
22
00:01:08.120 --> 00:01:15.240
So you can combo this with a 30 foot, 40 foot, 50 foot or 30, 35, 40 depending
23
00:01:15.240 --> 00:01:15.880
on how precise
24
00:01:15.880 --> 00:01:17.120
you want to get.
25
00:01:17.120 --> 00:01:25.290
So overall, I usually do this without a hole but you can put this around a hole
26
00:01:25.290 --> 00:01:25.800
.
27
00:01:25.800 --> 00:01:30.190
If you're going to do that, I would air on from a longer put, let's say six
28
00:01:30.190 --> 00:01:31.060
inches short
29
00:01:31.060 --> 00:01:33.840
to a foot and a half past or something like that.
30
00:01:33.840 --> 00:01:38.400
The other thing is I would usually use the same end zone from two different
31
00:01:38.400 --> 00:01:39.120
sides.
32
00:01:39.120 --> 00:01:43.320
So if I do this uphill downhill, that's a little bit harder than if I'm doing
33
00:01:43.320 --> 00:01:43.800
left to
34
00:01:43.800 --> 00:01:46.680
right break versus right to left break.
35
00:01:46.680 --> 00:01:49.950
But sometimes you will find that you have harder time with speed control on
36
00:01:49.950 --> 00:01:50.320
left to
37
00:01:50.320 --> 00:01:51.800
right versus right to left.
38
00:01:51.800 --> 00:01:54.560
This is one game that can help identify it.
39
00:01:54.560 --> 00:02:01.640
So I'm going to use my practice swings to kind of calibrate what's my 10 pace
40
00:02:01.640 --> 00:02:02.440
stroke
41
00:02:02.440 --> 00:02:08.240
which is about 15 inches or close to outer thigh.
42
00:02:08.240 --> 00:02:12.520
So let's see how we can do on our first go.
