Speed Control Overview

Course Progress
When it comes to speed control there are two main skills to train: Length of backswing and acceleration rate. Length of backswing can be dialed in compared to your body or compared to the movement of the club head (similar to dialing in your distance for wedge play). Acceleration rate has a close connection to tempo. You can either train the feeling of accelerating with dead weight or you can train a tempo based on an auditory rhythm.
Once you've trained length of swing and tempo the only other factor for speed control is getting a quality roll from controlling loft and rise angle.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.770
Welcome back golfers. Hopefully you've been doing the drills and working on the
2
00:00:09.770 --> 00:00:10.020
string
3
00:00:10.020 --> 00:00:15.280
or the ruler and really getting good at your putts inside of let's say 10 feet
4
00:00:15.280 --> 00:00:15.440
because
5
00:00:15.440 --> 00:00:21.010
you're controlling the start line. This class is more about speed control. This
6
00:00:21.010 --> 00:00:21.320
becomes
7
00:00:21.320 --> 00:00:26.580
a bigger impact or this becomes a more important skill as we get outside 20
8
00:00:26.580 --> 00:00:27.560
feet. Speed control
9
00:00:27.560 --> 00:00:32.710
is really helpful for your intermediate putts, for making them as well as for
10
00:00:32.710 --> 00:00:33.240
your longer
11
00:00:33.240 --> 00:00:40.280
putts for avoiding three putting. So as you can see, start line is important
12
00:00:40.280 --> 00:00:41.400
because depending
13
00:00:41.400 --> 00:00:46.650
on the different speed that I take, I'm going to have to pick a different start
14
00:00:46.650 --> 00:00:47.120
line and
15
00:00:47.120 --> 00:00:51.760
those could be a matter of degrees apart kind of like we're seeing here. I had
16
00:00:51.760 --> 00:00:53.760
one conversation
17
00:00:53.760 --> 00:00:59.760
with a really, really good putter and he said that he had had dinner with
18
00:00:59.760 --> 00:01:01.080
another elite
19
00:01:01.080 --> 00:01:05.830
level putter on tour and they both talked about how the most important thing,
20
00:01:05.830 --> 00:01:06.600
the number
21
00:01:06.600 --> 00:01:11.850
one thing that they were thinking about was speed control because speed control
22
00:01:11.850 --> 00:01:12.040
dictated
23
00:01:12.040 --> 00:01:16.750
the line and once they had the line figured out then all they had to do was
24
00:01:16.750 --> 00:01:17.560
roll it over
25
00:01:17.560 --> 00:01:23.140
the air line or over their target at that specific speed. So if you build a
26
00:01:23.140 --> 00:01:24.200
stroke where you can
27
00:01:24.200 --> 00:01:28.590
control start line then I think it simplifies things because the only thing you
28
00:01:28.590 --> 00:01:29.240
need to think
29
00:01:29.240 --> 00:01:34.500
about when you're actually rolling the putt is your tempo and the length of
30
00:01:34.500 --> 00:01:35.200
swing. You
31
00:01:35.200 --> 00:01:39.240
only have to think about the elements that are going to control speed control
32
00:01:39.240 --> 00:01:40.720
or distance.
33
00:01:40.720 --> 00:01:47.520
Okay, so I teased what it is that actually controls distance. So we'll look at,
34
00:01:47.520 --> 00:01:49.040
there
35
00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:55.160
are a couple main factors that control distance assuming somewhat centered
36
00:01:55.160 --> 00:01:56.560
contact and then
37
00:01:56.560 --> 00:02:01.850
quality roll. Quality roll comes from a combination of the face angle or loft
38
00:02:01.850 --> 00:02:03.800
and the rise angle.
39
00:02:03.800 --> 00:02:10.930
So ideally what we're trying to do in order to get quality roll is basically
40
00:02:10.930 --> 00:02:11.800
what we were
41
00:02:11.800 --> 00:02:17.290
trying to do is we are trying to strike a golf ball so that it's going to come
42
00:02:17.290 --> 00:02:17.800
up out
43
00:02:17.800 --> 00:02:22.490
of the depression that it's sitting in because a golf ball has a bit of weight
44
00:02:22.490 --> 00:02:23.280
in it to it
45
00:02:23.280 --> 00:02:27.640
so it's sitting in a slight depression almost like sitting in a bird's nest.
46
00:02:27.640 --> 00:02:27.760
That's why
47
00:02:27.760 --> 00:02:32.670
the putter face has some loft depending on the firmness of the greens, the make
48
00:02:32.670 --> 00:02:33.680
of the putter,
49
00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:40.000
three degrees, four degrees, maybe even more. So our goal is this ball is going
50
00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:40.720
to pop up
51
00:02:40.720 --> 00:02:45.950
out of the bird's nest, travel about four to six inches in the air. I think it
52
00:02:45.950 --> 00:02:46.040
's about
53
00:02:46.040 --> 00:02:51.240
four to six inches in the air and then as it lands it's going to go into roll
54
00:02:51.240 --> 00:02:52.040
right away.
55
00:02:52.040 --> 00:02:57.300
Typically golfers who have speed control issues, if we're just looking at the
56
00:02:57.300 --> 00:02:57.840
performance
57
00:02:57.840 --> 00:03:03.850
of the golf ball they will tend to either get backspin or they will tend to hit
58
00:03:03.850 --> 00:03:04.320
it with
59
00:03:04.320 --> 00:03:08.740
too much lean, hit the ball into the face and it will pop up. These bounces and
60
00:03:08.740 --> 00:03:10.240
the spin
61
00:03:10.240 --> 00:03:17.030
create some of the inconsistencies with being able to control speed. So by
62
00:03:17.030 --> 00:03:18.800
getting quality
63
00:03:18.800 --> 00:03:25.150
roll that's a relationship between the loft and the rise angle or the angle of
64
00:03:25.150 --> 00:03:26.400
attack.
65
00:03:26.400 --> 00:03:29.770
But if we were to factor these or take these out and just say all right I'm
66
00:03:29.770 --> 00:03:30.880
making relatively
67
00:03:30.880 --> 00:03:36.670
solid contact, how do I control distance? Then it ultimately comes down to two
68
00:03:36.670 --> 00:03:37.960
main factors.
69
00:03:37.960 --> 00:03:42.750
One would be the tempo or the rate of the swing. So if I'm swinging the putter
70
00:03:42.750 --> 00:03:43.040
back
71
00:03:43.040 --> 00:03:49.130
and forth this is getting accelerated primarily by gravity once I got it
72
00:03:49.130 --> 00:03:51.080
swinging. Now I would
73
00:03:51.080 --> 00:03:56.340
say that most bad putters either guide the putter kind of like this so they're
74
00:03:56.340 --> 00:03:56.840
not actually
75
00:03:56.840 --> 00:04:01.210
letting it swing they're just kind of moving it through space or they
76
00:04:01.210 --> 00:04:02.480
accelerate it. And
77
00:04:02.480 --> 00:04:07.740
when you over accelerate something you're going to have a hard time with touch.
78
00:04:07.740 --> 00:04:08.040
Imagine
79
00:04:08.040 --> 00:04:13.300
shooting a free throw or tossing a ball and reaching kind of maximum
80
00:04:13.300 --> 00:04:14.120
acceleration as you
81
00:04:14.120 --> 00:04:18.030
were letting go. For those touch activities you will tend to see a pattern
82
00:04:18.030 --> 00:04:19.680
where the acceleration
83
00:04:19.680 --> 00:04:26.720
is happening early in the motion and then as you're getting ready to release it
84
00:04:26.720 --> 00:04:27.440
's actually
85
00:04:27.440 --> 00:04:32.640
kind of in more of a coast mode. That allows the brain to kind of feel what's
86
00:04:32.640 --> 00:04:32.640
happening
87
00:04:32.640 --> 00:04:37.900
because the brain either sends a signal out like I'm applying force to it or it
88
00:04:37.900 --> 00:04:38.520
receives
89
00:04:38.520 --> 00:04:43.350
the signal back which would be okay what is this doing? If you accelerate early
90
00:04:43.350 --> 00:04:43.640
and then
91
00:04:43.640 --> 00:04:47.260
guide late you'll be able to receive more information which allows you your
92
00:04:47.260 --> 00:04:47.960
unconscious
93
00:04:47.960 --> 00:04:53.380
mind to control the putter a little bit better. So what you'll see in this
94
00:04:53.380 --> 00:04:55.680
section is mostly
95
00:04:55.680 --> 00:05:01.610
drills related to either working on your tempo or the rate of acceleration or
96
00:05:01.610 --> 00:05:02.600
working on
97
00:05:02.600 --> 00:05:09.280
the length of stroke. So the majority of bad golfers or bad putters I should
98
00:05:09.280 --> 00:05:10.240
say do one
99
00:05:10.240 --> 00:05:16.670
of a couple things. When it relates to speed what they typically do is on they
100
00:05:16.670 --> 00:05:17.720
take about
101
00:05:17.720 --> 00:05:23.770
the same length stroke on every swing and then they accelerate it on the long
102
00:05:23.770 --> 00:05:24.400
ones and
103
00:05:24.400 --> 00:05:28.800
they kind of decelerate it on the short ones. So in general they take on short
104
00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:29.360
putts they
105
00:05:29.360 --> 00:05:33.210
take too long of a stroke and then decelerate and while it's decelerating the
106
00:05:33.210 --> 00:05:34.680
face is twisting
107
00:05:34.680 --> 00:05:39.040
and they can either push it or pull it. And then on the long putts they take
108
00:05:39.040 --> 00:05:39.440
the same
109
00:05:39.440 --> 00:05:43.370
length swing as their short putts and then they try to accelerate it and what
110
00:05:43.370 --> 00:05:43.920
they'll
111
00:05:43.920 --> 00:05:49.180
find is that while you're accelerating it really hard it's ultimately hard to
112
00:05:49.180 --> 00:05:49.760
control
113
00:05:49.760 --> 00:05:57.720
the precision. It becomes extra complicated or becomes more problematic on fast
114
00:05:57.720 --> 00:05:58.040
greens
115
00:05:58.040 --> 00:06:03.300
or big sloping putts. So downhill putts primarily that over acceleration rate
116
00:06:03.300 --> 00:06:03.720
is going to be
117
00:06:03.720 --> 00:06:09.390
a big problem. So we've got videos that kind of help us feel this consistent
118
00:06:09.390 --> 00:06:10.360
acceleration
119
00:06:10.360 --> 00:06:16.620
rate. I use the idea of more of a wrecking ball or like a pendulum or swinging
120
00:06:16.620 --> 00:06:17.240
it like
121
00:06:17.240 --> 00:06:24.280
dead weight. That way I'm taking some of my artificial acceleration out of it.
122
00:06:24.280 --> 00:06:24.480
I do
123
00:06:24.480 --> 00:06:29.140
know that you will provide a little bit of acceleration in transition so it's
124
00:06:29.140 --> 00:06:30.320
not a true
125
00:06:30.320 --> 00:06:36.430
pendulum but it's a good model for most golfers to try to recreate. The other
126
00:06:36.430 --> 00:06:36.720
thing that I
127
00:06:36.720 --> 00:06:43.320
like to do is use references for length of backswing. So similar to when if you
128
00:06:43.320 --> 00:06:43.920
're hitting
129
00:06:43.920 --> 00:06:49.120
your wedges and you're working on doing a clock system kind of like Dave Pels
130
00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:49.760
or James
131
00:06:49.760 --> 00:06:56.020
Seachman or a lot of the other popular wedge techniques where you're doing kind
132
00:06:56.020 --> 00:06:56.640
of a nine
133
00:06:56.640 --> 00:07:00.160
o'clock, a ten o'clock, an eleven o'clock type swing, we're going to use some
134
00:07:00.160 --> 00:07:00.840
references
135
00:07:00.840 --> 00:07:07.630
to help dial in our distance. So this section will primarily focus on those two
136
00:07:07.630 --> 00:07:08.440
big factors
137
00:07:08.440 --> 00:07:14.480
as well as potentially controlling the role of the ball from controlling your
138
00:07:14.480 --> 00:07:15.200
loft and
139
00:07:15.200 --> 00:07:18.850
your rise angle. So when you're analyzing your putting stroke for the purpose
140
00:07:18.850 --> 00:07:19.440
of distance
141
00:07:19.440 --> 00:07:24.610
control, you're primarily going to look at it from the face on camera view. So
142
00:07:24.610 --> 00:07:24.800
the face
143
00:07:24.800 --> 00:07:31.060
on camera view is going to reveal the length of backswing to downswing so that
144
00:07:31.060 --> 00:07:32.760
relationship.
145
00:07:32.760 --> 00:07:38.020
And you'll be able to see if there's some extra arm and hand motion. Now I do
146
00:07:38.020 --> 00:07:38.280
think
147
00:07:38.280 --> 00:07:43.540
the down the line can be easier to see if you're getting some hip rotation
148
00:07:43.540 --> 00:07:44.160
because that can
149
00:07:44.160 --> 00:07:49.620
be a little bit trickier to see from a face on camera angle though not
150
00:07:49.620 --> 00:07:51.080
impossible. And
151
00:07:51.080 --> 00:07:57.940
then solid strike, you can either use a gate or the down the line camera can be
152
00:07:57.940 --> 00:07:58.720
really
153
00:07:58.720 --> 00:08:03.130
helpful for looking at if you're getting some dip, some speeding consistency
154
00:08:03.130 --> 00:08:04.080
because of the
155
00:08:04.080 --> 00:08:10.980
contact location. Though I tend to find that to be the less common one because
156
00:08:10.980 --> 00:08:12.000
the strike
157
00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:15.790
location would have to change quite a bit in order to have a big impact on
158
00:08:15.790 --> 00:08:16.600
speed. The
159
00:08:16.600 --> 00:08:21.860
main thing I see is more the length of the backswing as well as the
160
00:08:21.860 --> 00:08:22.800
acceleration rate.
161
00:08:22.800 --> 00:08:27.470
But if you are analyzing how the golf ball is going rolling, you can get the
162
00:08:27.470 --> 00:08:27.480
putter or
163
00:08:27.480 --> 00:08:33.280
you can get the camera really close to the golf ball on a tripod and you can
164
00:08:33.280 --> 00:08:34.160
you'll watch
165
00:08:34.160 --> 00:08:38.850
the video where I show you how to kind of look at it in slow motion and you can
166
00:08:38.850 --> 00:08:39.360
set up a
167
00:08:39.360 --> 00:08:43.350
golf ball so that you can see how it's actually launching and how it's spinning
168
00:08:43.350 --> 00:08:45.160
when it lanes.
169
00:08:45.160 --> 00:08:50.830
Okay so the main speed control drills relate to either feeling or hearing or
170
00:08:50.830 --> 00:08:51.880
sensing some
171
00:08:51.880 --> 00:08:56.350
type of rhythmic motion. That can either be with the putter drop feel, the pend
172
00:08:56.350 --> 00:08:57.200
ulum feel,
173
00:08:57.200 --> 00:09:03.300
the metronome matching or working on length of backswing. I'm a big fan of
174
00:09:03.300 --> 00:09:04.040
practicing
175
00:09:04.040 --> 00:09:07.870
especially longer putts working on long lengths of backswings and having a
176
00:09:07.870 --> 00:09:09.320
couple of references
177
00:09:09.320 --> 00:09:17.280
for helping you go into each putt on the golf course from less of a guess. One
178
00:09:17.280 --> 00:09:18.120
game or when
179
00:09:18.120 --> 00:09:22.740
I go on the course with a lot of my high school kids, I will always ask them on
180
00:09:22.740 --> 00:09:23.120
this
181
00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:28.800
putt, okay how big of a backswing are you imagining before they hit the putt?
182
00:09:28.800 --> 00:09:29.200
That forces
183
00:09:29.200 --> 00:09:34.620
them to commit to a length of backswing and that can ultimately help both with
184
00:09:34.620 --> 00:09:35.400
tempo as
185
00:09:35.400 --> 00:09:39.830
well as with the acceleration rate. Some distance control games that can help
186
00:09:39.830 --> 00:09:43.160
you train. One
187
00:09:43.160 --> 00:09:48.480
of the most common ones I start with is the three time same distance. So
188
00:09:48.480 --> 00:09:49.200
basically building
189
00:09:49.200 --> 00:09:54.460
some stock putting stroke. Let's say I'm going to bring the putter back. I can
190
00:09:54.460 --> 00:09:54.800
either
191
00:09:54.800 --> 00:09:59.040
do it compared to my stance so I'm going to bring it back this far past my foot
192
00:09:59.040 --> 00:09:59.360
or I
193
00:09:59.360 --> 00:10:03.110
can do it more towards them compared to a ruler so I'm going to bring the put
194
00:10:03.110 --> 00:10:03.640
ter back
195
00:10:03.640 --> 00:10:11.190
about 15 inches on each side. Roughly a 15 inch backswing is about a 30 foot
196
00:10:11.190 --> 00:10:12.520
putt on
197
00:10:12.520 --> 00:10:20.850
about a 10 stem green. So I like to start with one reference and then build on
198
00:10:20.850 --> 00:10:21.400
that
199
00:10:21.400 --> 00:10:25.520
and maybe have two or three somewhere to we do with wedges. But then other
200
00:10:25.520 --> 00:10:26.360
games that
201
00:10:26.360 --> 00:10:33.660
are useful are working on ladder drills or leapfrog where you hit a putt, hit a
202
00:10:33.660 --> 00:10:33.880
putt
203
00:10:33.880 --> 00:10:37.960
slightly further, hit a putt slightly further and just basically work on can I
204
00:10:37.960 --> 00:10:38.760
incrementally
205
00:10:38.760 --> 00:10:44.020
take the putter back further and keep the same acceleration so that I get
206
00:10:44.020 --> 00:10:44.920
incremental
207
00:10:44.920 --> 00:10:49.880
distance improvement or moon walking which is basically the opposite. I'm going
208
00:10:49.880 --> 00:10:50.160
to start
209
00:10:50.160 --> 00:10:54.510
at the far one and then incrementally take the putter back shorter, shorter,
210
00:10:54.510 --> 00:10:55.040
shorter
211
00:10:55.040 --> 00:11:02.260
and try to keep kind of even gapping in those, in the distance of each putt. I
212
00:11:02.260 --> 00:11:03.560
'll also do
213
00:11:03.560 --> 00:11:07.720
end zone training, you'll see that video as well as fringe putting so that's
214
00:11:07.720 --> 00:11:08.160
more of
215
00:11:08.160 --> 00:11:13.420
kind of a little bit more random but using my references all the time for
216
00:11:13.420 --> 00:11:14.120
trying to control
217
00:11:14.120 --> 00:11:18.080
my distance. Alright as we summarize distance control I think the challenging
218
00:11:18.080 --> 00:11:18.440
thing is
219
00:11:18.440 --> 00:11:22.280
that it's deceptively simple. There's only a few factors for controlling
220
00:11:22.280 --> 00:11:23.120
distance. I
221
00:11:23.120 --> 00:11:27.200
have my length of stroke, my tempo and the quality of the golf ball rolling
222
00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:27.800
which comes
223
00:11:27.800 --> 00:11:33.390
from lost control, the angle of attack and solid contact. On paper it sounds
224
00:11:33.390 --> 00:11:33.720
like it
225
00:11:33.720 --> 00:11:38.960
should be easier than trying to control the putter face to within half a degree
226
00:11:38.960 --> 00:11:40.600
. But the
227
00:11:40.600 --> 00:11:48.640
tempo and the length of stroke can both be maybe more subject to distractions
228
00:11:48.640 --> 00:11:49.200
or even
229
00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:52.680
variance when you start to get a little bit of adrenaline or you get a little
230
00:11:52.680 --> 00:11:53.240
sluggish.
231
00:11:53.240 --> 00:11:57.290
I think that this one is a little bit less consistent than someone's start line
232
00:11:57.290 --> 00:11:57.720
or face
233
00:11:57.720 --> 00:12:04.060
control barring some certain putting styles. So this one takes, when we're
234
00:12:04.060 --> 00:12:04.920
designing our
235
00:12:04.920 --> 00:12:08.550
putting plan we're going to give more of the time typically working on speed
236
00:12:08.550 --> 00:12:09.080
control
237
00:12:09.080 --> 00:12:13.440
than start line unless we have a specific start line issue. Because this will
238
00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:13.800
be one
239
00:12:13.800 --> 00:12:20.080
of the ways to elevate your performance by getting you the ability to avoid
240
00:12:20.080 --> 00:12:21.080
long three
241
00:12:21.080 --> 00:12:28.180
putts as well as make more of your birdie opportunities in the 20, 25 foot zone
242
00:12:28.180 --> 00:12:28.680
down
243
00:12:28.680 --> 00:12:32.820
to about 10 feet or so. So in the next class we're going to take a look at the
244
00:12:32.820 --> 00:12:33.240
last of
245
00:12:33.240 --> 00:12:36.560
the three scales greenery.
