Hit from the top is a brilliant putting drill for combining the two factors for speed control

Hit from the top is a sneaky good putting game. It combines the length of swing and tempo to help you train your stroke for distance. You have to commit to a length of swing and stop there, then you'll have to an increased awareness of the acceleration. This is a great drill to combine with either 30 40 50, end zone, or 3 times the same distance.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.720
This putting drill video is hit from the top so hit from the top is one of my

2
00:00:09.720 --> 00:00:11.000
favorite

3
00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:16.260
putting drills for working on speed control because it combines the two most

4
00:00:16.260 --> 00:00:16.960
important

5
00:00:16.960 --> 00:00:22.090
skills for speed control, length of backswing training as well as tempo

6
00:00:22.090 --> 00:00:22.560
training.

7
00:00:22.560 --> 00:00:27.700
So basically hit from the top, we use it in the full swing as well as chipping

8
00:00:27.700 --> 00:00:28.040
or the

9
00:00:28.040 --> 00:00:32.350
finesse wedge for working on sequencing and acceleration rates, we're going to

10
00:00:32.350 --> 00:00:32.720
use it

11
00:00:32.720 --> 00:00:36.660
the same here, we're just going to do it from a couple different length back

12
00:00:36.660 --> 00:00:37.400
swing.

13
00:00:37.400 --> 00:00:40.940
So the normal setup that I use is something similar to this, where I have a T

14
00:00:40.940 --> 00:00:41.480
at about

15
00:00:41.480 --> 00:00:45.730
30 feet and then another T at about 15, but you can pick any two distances or

16
00:00:45.730 --> 00:00:46.160
you could

17
00:00:46.160 --> 00:00:52.200
combo this with something like the 30, 40, 50 drill or something like that.

18
00:00:52.200 --> 00:00:55.860
So basically what we're going to do here is we're going to try to keep our

19
00:00:55.860 --> 00:00:56.760
setup the

20
00:00:56.760 --> 00:01:02.760
same and we're going to pre-determine how big of a backstroke or a backswing we

21
00:01:02.760 --> 00:01:03.040
're going

22
00:01:03.040 --> 00:01:07.030
to take and then our goal is to roll it even to those T's, we're not really

23
00:01:07.030 --> 00:01:07.760
working too

24
00:01:07.760 --> 00:01:13.440
much on alignment here, we're just focusing on length of swing, comboing with

25
00:01:13.440 --> 00:01:14.200
distance

26
00:01:14.200 --> 00:01:18.450
control and you can either do a couple at each or you can alternate going back

27
00:01:18.450 --> 00:01:19.920
and forth,

28
00:01:19.920 --> 00:01:24.320
the better you get I like to do more of the alternating back and forth.

29
00:01:24.320 --> 00:01:31.680
So now I set them up at 15 and 30 feet or roughly five and ten paces.

30
00:01:31.680 --> 00:01:38.220
So I know that 30 feet should be about a 15 inch backstroke for me, although

31
00:01:38.220 --> 00:01:39.000
the greens

32
00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:43.440
are a little bit flow today so I'll probably add an extra inch or two to the

33
00:01:43.440 --> 00:01:44.200
backswing

34
00:01:44.200 --> 00:01:45.200
length.

35
00:01:45.200 --> 00:01:51.740
So if I get into my normal setup position, 15 inch backswing is going to be

36
00:01:51.740 --> 00:01:52.640
somewhere

37
00:01:52.640 --> 00:01:53.880
around there.

38
00:01:53.880 --> 00:02:02.070
So I'm going to try and hit a put where I get there and stop and yes they are a

39
00:02:02.070 --> 00:02:02.480
little

40
00:02:02.480 --> 00:02:03.760
bit slow today.

41
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:08.900
So now I don't want to change my tempo in my head, I'm going to change how long

42
00:02:08.900 --> 00:02:09.080
of a

43
00:02:09.080 --> 00:02:10.080
backswing.

44
00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:16.210
So there you'll see that's just slightly bigger and I went, that was the right

45
00:02:16.210 --> 00:02:17.160
distance, so

46
00:02:17.160 --> 00:02:20.060
I went a little bit more to the right of that golf ball so that I made sure

47
00:02:20.060 --> 00:02:20.680
that I didn't

48
00:02:20.680 --> 00:02:22.320
hit it.

49
00:02:22.320 --> 00:02:27.780
Now if I want to, I can either switch targets or try to match that with an

50
00:02:27.780 --> 00:02:29.320
actual stroke.

51
00:02:29.320 --> 00:02:33.660
So now I'm going to try to match it where basically there is no pause, let's

52
00:02:33.660 --> 00:02:34.040
see if

53
00:02:34.040 --> 00:02:36.840
we can match that.

54
00:02:36.840 --> 00:02:42.100
So there we had no pause and we tried to take it back the same length, back

55
00:02:42.100 --> 00:02:42.280
swing to

56
00:02:42.280 --> 00:02:43.920
get the same roll.

57
00:02:43.920 --> 00:02:47.720
So that looked pretty good so now I'm going to try to go to the shorter one.

58
00:02:47.720 --> 00:02:52.980
So now my reference for the shorter one is more bringing the putter back,

59
00:02:52.980 --> 00:02:53.760
somewhere

60
00:02:53.760 --> 00:02:59.600
in the eight to ten inch range or about the outside of my foot.

61
00:02:59.600 --> 00:03:04.250
So here I'm going to get into that same setup position, we're going to bring it

62
00:03:04.250 --> 00:03:04.760
back and

63
00:03:04.760 --> 00:03:10.020
now from here I'm just going to feel like my arms and the putter drop as dead

64
00:03:10.020 --> 00:03:10.400
weight

65
00:03:10.400 --> 00:03:13.830
and again they're a little bit slow so I probably should have added more to it

66
00:03:13.830 --> 00:03:14.440
but that wasn't

67
00:03:14.440 --> 00:03:16.040
too bad.

68
00:03:16.040 --> 00:03:22.060
So we'll do one more where we're going to bring it back and then drop it and

69
00:03:22.060 --> 00:03:23.400
that was

70
00:03:23.400 --> 00:03:25.320
almost an identical putter.

71
00:03:25.320 --> 00:03:30.740
So now we're going to try to match that same speed more dynamically where we

72
00:03:30.740 --> 00:03:31.720
bring it back

73
00:03:31.720 --> 00:03:37.620
or we swing the club back and then release and this should go just about the

74
00:03:37.620 --> 00:03:38.840
same speed.

75
00:03:38.840 --> 00:03:42.650
So now I've got a few balls left and we'll alternate going back and forth

76
00:03:42.650 --> 00:03:43.400
between those

77
00:03:43.400 --> 00:03:45.160
two length shots.

78
00:03:45.160 --> 00:03:53.700
So now I'm going to bring it back, have a clear pause and then a clear start

79
00:03:53.700 --> 00:03:55.080
and swing.

80
00:03:55.080 --> 00:04:01.380
That gets me close to the 30 and then I'm going to do a clear pause, bring it

81
00:04:01.380 --> 00:04:02.080
back to

82
00:04:02.080 --> 00:04:05.800
the foot, stop, stroke through.

83
00:04:05.800 --> 00:04:09.680
And so like I said at the beginning, this is one of my favorite drills for

84
00:04:09.680 --> 00:04:10.360
working on

85
00:04:10.360 --> 00:04:15.490
speed control because it combos, having to trust my tempo in the length of

86
00:04:15.490 --> 00:04:16.120
swing to control

87
00:04:16.120 --> 00:04:17.120
the distance.

88
00:04:17.120 --> 00:04:21.080
If you have a hard time doing this, what you'll quickly find is that you either

89
00:04:21.080 --> 00:04:21.800
accelerate

90
00:04:21.800 --> 00:04:24.480
it or kind of slow it, guide it down.

91
00:04:24.480 --> 00:04:30.650
So it's more of a tempo problem where with the pause, I rarely see people

92
00:04:30.650 --> 00:04:31.840
struggle with

93
00:04:31.840 --> 00:04:36.310
the length of backswing component but what this does is this ties keeping the

94
00:04:36.310 --> 00:04:36.960
same tempo

95
00:04:36.960 --> 00:04:39.640
to the length of backswing that you take.

96
00:04:39.640 --> 00:04:44.400
So I highly recommend working this into your distance control practice.

97
00:04:44.400 --> 00:04:49.040
This will have a big impact on your ability to cut down three puts on the

98
00:04:49.040 --> 00:04:49.800
course.
