Use different length putts to build your system for training feel

The two main components for distance control are the length of stroke and tempo. In this drill, you can practice varying the length of the stroke for each putt. In general, most students find each 10 feet needs about a 3-inch longer backswing, but play around with the exact distance to determine what works best with your pattern.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:11.200
This speed control game is 30 40 50. So 30 40 50 is one of my favorite speed

2
00:00:11.200 --> 00:00:11.520
control

3
00:00:11.520 --> 00:00:16.140
games. It creates a little bit of random practice for controlling speed. I've

4
00:00:16.140 --> 00:00:16.960
got a target

5
00:00:16.960 --> 00:00:21.250
down there. You can use a hole. I have an end zone set up that's about a three

6
00:00:21.250 --> 00:00:22.000
foot target.

7
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:26.050
So if you're using a hole, I'll usually say you get a point if you get it

8
00:00:26.050 --> 00:00:27.240
inside of the

9
00:00:27.240 --> 00:00:33.800
club length. When you get to the 50 foot or sometimes I'll do this 30 40 50.

10
00:00:33.800 --> 00:00:34.200
Sometimes

11
00:00:34.200 --> 00:00:40.570
I'll do it 40 50 60. But I find that if you can two putt consistently from 40

12
00:00:40.570 --> 00:00:41.400
feet 50

13
00:00:41.400 --> 00:00:46.630
feet up to 60 feet, it makes two putting inside of 30 feet more of a breeze. So

14
00:00:46.630 --> 00:00:47.520
the only rule

15
00:00:47.520 --> 00:00:50.170
here is you're not allowed to hit the same putt twice and you have to take a

16
00:00:50.170 --> 00:00:50.640
practice

17
00:00:50.640 --> 00:00:54.100
stroke to commit to the length of backswing you're going to take. So your goal

18
00:00:54.100 --> 00:00:54.600
is to keep

19
00:00:54.600 --> 00:00:58.360
your tempo the same and focus on the length of backswing to get the ball to

20
00:00:58.360 --> 00:00:58.960
finish in

21
00:00:58.960 --> 00:01:04.780
the end zone. If you're like most golfers, then from each stage, it's probably

22
00:01:04.780 --> 00:01:05.280
going

23
00:01:05.280 --> 00:01:09.580
to be about two or three inches of additional backswing length in order to hit

24
00:01:09.580 --> 00:01:10.280
it. At least

25
00:01:10.280 --> 00:01:14.560
that's my kind of teaching experience. The other real quick setup thing you'll

26
00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:14.920
notice

27
00:01:14.920 --> 00:01:19.610
that I have these balls not directly in line with the target, but on a little

28
00:01:19.610 --> 00:01:20.280
bit of an

29
00:01:20.280 --> 00:01:24.480
angle that way I don't have to hit around the golf balls. I can aim at the

30
00:01:24.480 --> 00:01:25.360
target on all

31
00:01:25.360 --> 00:01:32.290
of them. So again, I'll usually do this in multiples of three. So right now I

32
00:01:32.290 --> 00:01:32.640
have six

33
00:01:32.640 --> 00:01:37.960
golf balls, but many times I'll do this with 15 golf balls or nine golf balls.

34
00:01:37.960 --> 00:01:38.160
If I do

35
00:01:38.160 --> 00:01:42.610
it with 15 golf balls, I'll vary how I go through. So the first time we'll do

36
00:01:42.610 --> 00:01:44.560
30 40 50.

37
00:01:44.560 --> 00:01:49.300
But then we might do 40 50 30 or something like that. So we'll jump around a

38
00:01:49.300 --> 00:01:49.680
little bit

39
00:01:49.680 --> 00:01:55.100
more. Okay, so the first putt should be pretty close to one of my stock putt.

40
00:01:55.100 --> 00:01:56.840
So for 30 feet,

41
00:01:56.840 --> 00:02:00.770
I'm going to rehearse my backswing. That's going to be how long I'm going to

42
00:02:00.770 --> 00:02:01.360
take. And

43
00:02:01.360 --> 00:02:06.590
then if I keep my good tempo, hopefully that all that looks a little fast, they

44
00:02:06.590 --> 00:02:06.720
might

45
00:02:06.720 --> 00:02:12.560
be quick today. Oh, just a little strong. So now I'm trying to factor that in.

46
00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:13.200
Normally

47
00:02:13.200 --> 00:02:17.810
I would do about a three inch longer backswing, but instead I'm probably going

48
00:02:17.810 --> 00:02:18.400
to try for

49
00:02:18.400 --> 00:02:24.070
about two. Hold that a little bit, but this is not a direction game as long as

50
00:02:24.070 --> 00:02:25.000
that finishes

51
00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:31.400
in the zone. I'll count it good. Now, if you are using a hole, then it does, it

52
00:02:31.400 --> 00:02:31.800
, it forces

53
00:02:31.800 --> 00:02:36.100
you to be a little bit more. You have to factor in direction, but I'm just

54
00:02:36.100 --> 00:02:37.640
using an end zone.

55
00:02:37.640 --> 00:02:40.910
So now I'm going to try to do about two inches bigger backswing compared to

56
00:02:40.910 --> 00:02:42.560
that last stroke.

57
00:02:42.560 --> 00:02:52.100
That's going to come up short. So now we'll go back to the middle putt. So here

58
00:02:52.100 --> 00:02:52.480
we've

59
00:02:52.480 --> 00:03:01.010
got the 40 footer. I think that was pretty good. So that's if I'm keeping score

60
00:03:01.010 --> 00:03:01.280
of one

61
00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:07.010
point in and one point out, now I'm at even anytime I can finish this one up in

62
00:03:07.010 --> 00:03:08.160
the positive

63
00:03:08.160 --> 00:03:13.670
zone. I'm not happy, but with this one, if I can get these last two points and

64
00:03:13.670 --> 00:03:14.280
finish

65
00:03:14.280 --> 00:03:19.510
plus two, I would be pretty happy. Depends how many golf balls and how much

66
00:03:19.510 --> 00:03:20.000
slope I've

67
00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:30.080
picked. Got a chance to stop, stop, stop. Oh, just squeak by. Now I've got the

68
00:03:30.080 --> 00:03:30.520
long one

69
00:03:30.520 --> 00:03:38.250
just to break even. Looks like we got to do a little speed control practice

70
00:03:38.250 --> 00:03:39.600
today after

71
00:03:39.600 --> 00:03:42.840
work. Now, while I was taking that stroke, I realized

72
00:03:42.840 --> 00:03:46.180
that I didn't take a practice stroke. I was trying to speed it up for the

73
00:03:46.180 --> 00:03:46.920
camera, but

74
00:03:46.920 --> 00:03:50.130
remember, part of this game is committing to a length of stroke every single

75
00:03:50.130 --> 00:03:50.560
time you

76
00:03:50.560 --> 00:03:54.140
take it. That will help you with your speed control. By working on your speed

77
00:03:54.140 --> 00:03:54.600
control,

78
00:03:54.600 --> 00:03:58.510
you'll help minimize your three putts while you improve your ball striking and

79
00:03:58.510 --> 00:03:59.040
starting

80
00:03:59.040 --> 00:04:02.480
the ball closer. That's going to have a big impact on your ability to lower

81
00:04:02.480 --> 00:04:03.080
your scores

82
00:04:03.080 --> 00:04:08.930
by avoiding some of those stupid bogeys when you hit the green and then three

83
00:04:08.930 --> 00:04:09.800
putts.
