One of my favorite putting practice stations
For this station, you'll need a ball with a line on it and a yard/meter stick to balance your ball on. Line the ball up vertically and practice rolling the ball wherever the stick is aimed. This station can be useful for training your putter face control, as well as for training committing to a specific line.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.680
This drill is the ultimate start line training station.
2
00:00:07.680 --> 00:00:11.120
So we're going to focus in on start line.
3
00:00:11.120 --> 00:00:16.680
There are three skills to being a really good putter, controlling speed,
4
00:00:16.680 --> 00:00:18.400
reading the green,
5
00:00:18.400 --> 00:00:21.440
and start line, or starting the ball in the intended line.
6
00:00:21.440 --> 00:00:26.320
So what I'm going to do here is I've got a yardstick that has a hole in it.
7
00:00:26.320 --> 00:00:32.960
What I'm going to do is I'm going to use the hole to place the golf ball,
8
00:00:32.960 --> 00:00:38.020
and I'm going to place the golf ball with a thick black line, or in this case
9
00:00:38.020 --> 00:00:38.960
blue or red,
10
00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:42.720
but basically with a thick line going around the circumference of the ball.
11
00:00:42.720 --> 00:00:48.550
You can either do this with the piece of PVC pipe, or they sell a little sten
12
00:00:48.550 --> 00:00:48.880
cils,
13
00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:54.880
or you can order them online, but the line is a really good diagnostic
14
00:00:54.880 --> 00:00:59.160
to how well you're controlling the putter face, how well you're getting square
15
00:00:59.160 --> 00:01:02.720
role end over end.
16
00:01:02.720 --> 00:01:07.680
So what I've got here, the ball is straight up and down on top of the
17
00:01:07.680 --> 00:01:13.040
ruler, now we're the meter stick, and I'm going to use a meter stick because I
18
00:01:13.040 --> 00:01:14.400
want to commit
19
00:01:14.400 --> 00:01:19.600
to a line. So I'm going to make a little adjustment here, come back.
20
00:01:20.800 --> 00:01:26.880
So I've now aimed this meter stick where I want the ball to start, and the ball
21
00:01:26.880 --> 00:01:27.680
is straight up and
22
00:01:27.680 --> 00:01:36.110
down. So if I hit a good put, the ball is going to roll end over end, and if it
23
00:01:36.110 --> 00:01:38.960
rolls end over end,
24
00:01:38.960 --> 00:01:43.680
we can see a little bit of a wobble in that one. So it wasn't quite perfect,
25
00:01:43.680 --> 00:01:46.640
but I also saw a little
26
00:01:46.640 --> 00:01:52.830
bit more of the break. So this is going to help me commit to a line, and then
27
00:01:52.830 --> 00:01:53.600
once I commit to a
28
00:01:53.600 --> 00:01:58.150
line, I'm going to forget about that, and I'm just going to train rolling the
29
00:01:58.150 --> 00:01:59.360
ball end over end. So
30
00:01:59.360 --> 00:02:04.800
that one rolled a bit more end over end. If that happens, you'll see one line,
31
00:02:04.800 --> 00:02:06.000
and you'll see that
32
00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:11.860
that tracked in towards the golf ball. Here's a handful of videos showing this
33
00:02:11.860 --> 00:02:13.040
common trend
34
00:02:13.040 --> 00:02:18.020
that a lot of golfers, over 90% of golfers on tour, will use a line of some
35
00:02:18.020 --> 00:02:19.200
sort on the ball,
36
00:02:19.200 --> 00:02:28.890
and here's a bunch of them rolling it end over end, especially on these shorter
37
00:02:28.890 --> 00:02:30.160
putts.
38
00:02:36.640 --> 00:02:42.560
After seeing those examples, you're probably, you bought in that, okay, I want
39
00:02:42.560 --> 00:02:43.440
to get the ball
40
00:02:43.440 --> 00:02:49.630
rolling end over end. This is really coming down to my putter face control. If
41
00:02:49.630 --> 00:02:50.880
I tend to have more
42
00:02:50.880 --> 00:02:58.010
of a cut stroke, or more of a hook kind of flip stroke, that will tend to cause
43
00:02:58.010 --> 00:02:58.720
the ball to
44
00:02:58.720 --> 00:03:05.360
launch and spin, and so the ball won't go end over end. So here you'll see if I
45
00:03:05.360 --> 00:03:06.320
have the putter face
46
00:03:06.320 --> 00:03:11.300
open and cut across. Yes, I can hit the putt where it goes online, but you can
47
00:03:11.300 --> 00:03:12.080
see that that did not
48
00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:16.700
roll very well. It's going to be really difficult for me to be a consistent put
49
00:03:16.700 --> 00:03:18.640
ter, both in terms of
50
00:03:18.640 --> 00:03:23.050
start line as well as distance control, if the ball is not rolling end over end
51
00:03:23.050 --> 00:03:24.240
. So that's why
52
00:03:24.240 --> 00:03:29.800
this is one of my kind of go-to ultimate diagnostics for just seeing how good
53
00:03:29.800 --> 00:03:30.880
all that hit a little
54
00:03:30.880 --> 00:03:35.110
something midway and kicked it left. It was rolling end over end, it was a good
55
00:03:35.110 --> 00:03:37.440
stroke. We'll try one
56
00:03:37.440 --> 00:03:40.900
more time, although I think that ball is now in the way, so we'll just hit
57
00:03:40.900 --> 00:03:43.520
through it. So that's
58
00:03:43.520 --> 00:03:49.440
rolling end over end, boom, right in the center of the cup. Quick little demo.
59
00:03:49.440 --> 00:03:51.280
We've got the line
60
00:03:51.280 --> 00:03:57.130
straight up and down. We're going to try to match it, and then we're going to
61
00:03:57.130 --> 00:03:58.080
try and roll
62
00:03:59.360 --> 00:04:05.360
ball end over end.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.680
This drill is the ultimate start line training station.
2
00:00:07.680 --> 00:00:11.120
So we're going to focus in on start line.
