00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.720
Okay golfers, here we are with the fifth class here, we're going to talk about
2
00:00:09.720 --> 00:00:10.840
troubleshooting.
3
00:00:10.840 --> 00:00:15.880
So three big skills, where can they go wrong?
4
00:00:15.880 --> 00:00:17.840
Keep in mind the putting benchmark.
5
00:00:17.840 --> 00:00:24.400
So as a general rule, I say make everything from three feet and in roughly 50%
6
00:00:24.400 --> 00:00:25.280
of around
7
00:00:25.280 --> 00:00:30.620
your eight footers, make one in four of kind of your 10 to 20 footers and then
8
00:00:30.620 --> 00:00:31.200
never put
9
00:00:31.200 --> 00:00:35.280
a three putt from inside of 30 feet.
10
00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:40.750
So with the longer putts, getting them, or if you're struggling with the longer
11
00:00:40.750 --> 00:00:41.240
putts
12
00:00:41.240 --> 00:00:44.820
and the medium putts, then it's primarily working on speed control and green
13
00:00:44.820 --> 00:00:45.480
reading.
14
00:00:45.480 --> 00:00:49.510
If you're struggling more with the shorter putts, then it's probably green
15
00:00:49.510 --> 00:00:50.200
reading as
16
00:00:50.200 --> 00:00:54.120
well as start line, but even more just start line.
17
00:00:54.120 --> 00:00:59.470
So by having these benchmarks, it might help you to prioritize what it is you
18
00:00:59.470 --> 00:01:00.280
need to work
19
00:01:00.280 --> 00:01:01.440
on.
20
00:01:01.440 --> 00:01:06.790
There's only a handful of things that can really go wrong with your putting
21
00:01:06.790 --> 00:01:07.480
stroke.
22
00:01:07.480 --> 00:01:11.720
You can look at it as far as skills or just assessing your overall stroke.
23
00:01:11.720 --> 00:01:17.070
For looking at skills, we've got your face control, your path control, and your
24
00:01:17.070 --> 00:01:17.520
speed
25
00:01:17.520 --> 00:01:19.760
control or tempo acceleration.
26
00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:23.910
So with the face control, I want to start at the wrist and make sure that I'm
27
00:01:23.910 --> 00:01:24.640
not seeing
28
00:01:24.640 --> 00:01:31.890
any crazy wrist action changes and then move on to the hips, making sure that I
29
00:01:31.890 --> 00:01:32.640
've got
30
00:01:32.640 --> 00:01:39.040
my lower body stable, especially if I'm struggling with some of those.
31
00:01:39.040 --> 00:01:44.390
I tend to find hip action shows up in either missing a lot of three footers or
32
00:01:44.390 --> 00:01:45.360
having speed
33
00:01:45.360 --> 00:01:50.560
control issues on my 15, 20 footers.
34
00:01:50.560 --> 00:01:55.910
And then lastly, so if the wrists are okay and the hips are okay, then lastly
35
00:01:55.910 --> 00:01:56.360
what's
36
00:01:56.360 --> 00:02:01.830
going on with the shoulders, but those are kind of the three big buckets if you
37
00:02:01.830 --> 00:02:02.720
're struggling
38
00:02:02.720 --> 00:02:04.280
with the face control drills.
39
00:02:04.280 --> 00:02:08.920
You want to look at your video and really assess what's going on there.
40
00:02:08.920 --> 00:02:11.600
When it comes to path control, I'm going to reverse the order.
41
00:02:11.600 --> 00:02:15.780
I'm going to focus on the hips and the shoulders, kind of get the pivot under
42
00:02:15.780 --> 00:02:16.560
control.
43
00:02:16.560 --> 00:02:21.080
And then I'm going to look at the wrist, but the wrist will have a big impact.
44
00:02:21.080 --> 00:02:27.520
So all three of those can cause you to have a big path issue.
45
00:02:27.520 --> 00:02:34.530
If you remember, the main issues that we will see putting stroke wise would
46
00:02:34.530 --> 00:02:36.520
either be the
47
00:02:36.520 --> 00:02:42.080
putter face is twisting independently, the putter is not traveling, the putter
48
00:02:42.080 --> 00:02:42.680
is kind
49
00:02:42.680 --> 00:02:47.150
of traveling either linearly or kind of having some of this float, basically it
50
00:02:47.150 --> 00:02:47.880
doesn't have
51
00:02:47.880 --> 00:02:54.310
a consistent suspension point just in front of your spine or the whole pizza is
52
00:02:54.310 --> 00:02:55.200
turning.
53
00:02:55.200 --> 00:02:58.890
That usually happens more from the pivot than the arms, but could go from
54
00:02:58.890 --> 00:02:59.720
either level
55
00:02:59.720 --> 00:03:02.560
shoulder turn or too much hip action.
56
00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:08.030
And then lastly, instead of the putter swinging, I'm either guiding it or over
57
00:03:08.030 --> 00:03:09.040
accelerating
58
00:03:09.040 --> 00:03:10.040
it.
59
00:03:10.040 --> 00:03:14.040
So I'm either pushing it, kind of like a battering ram or I'm guiding it where
60
00:03:14.040 --> 00:03:14.800
I'm not letting
61
00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:15.800
it swing.
62
00:03:15.800 --> 00:03:20.520
Both of those can be big problems for speed control.
63
00:03:20.520 --> 00:03:27.050
So with the, so we covered the face and the path now for tempo, we're going to
64
00:03:27.050 --> 00:03:28.400
look at
65
00:03:28.400 --> 00:03:34.070
the hips, we're going to look at the arm extension and we're going to look at
66
00:03:34.070 --> 00:03:35.000
the relationship
67
00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:36.840
of backswing to through swing.
68
00:03:36.840 --> 00:03:42.310
Am I getting equal tilt or am I kind of bringing it back with arms on one and
69
00:03:42.310 --> 00:03:44.120
tilt on the other?
70
00:03:44.120 --> 00:03:45.480
Those can cause some issues.
71
00:03:45.480 --> 00:03:52.360
So we've got kind of videos in this section related to the main problems that I
72
00:03:52.360 --> 00:03:53.320
see with
73
00:03:53.320 --> 00:03:56.040
each one of those core issues.
74
00:03:56.040 --> 00:03:58.800
Now if I'm just looking at my stroke and there's some things that I don't like,
75
00:03:58.800 --> 00:03:59.360
like let's
76
00:03:59.360 --> 00:04:05.190
say I'm seeing a lot of, sorry, I'm seeing a lot of wrist movement and I've
77
00:04:05.190 --> 00:04:06.160
tried some
78
00:04:06.160 --> 00:04:09.400
single arms, I've tried some wrist drills.
79
00:04:09.400 --> 00:04:12.860
Look at the pressure points, look at where your fingers are actually applying
80
00:04:12.860 --> 00:04:13.360
pressure
81
00:04:13.360 --> 00:04:19.400
and make sure that they have some opposing pressure and enough force to prevent
82
00:04:19.400 --> 00:04:19.880
the putter
83
00:04:19.880 --> 00:04:20.880
from rotating.
84
00:04:20.880 --> 00:04:23.560
Got drills that kind of help you with that.
85
00:04:23.560 --> 00:04:27.040
If you're looking at the, you're putting stroke and you're seeing some funky
86
00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:28.040
stuff with your
87
00:04:28.040 --> 00:04:32.440
arm motion, any of these combinations.
88
00:04:32.440 --> 00:04:38.300
You want to look to see if the arm spacing is changing, that can be wrist
89
00:04:38.300 --> 00:04:39.240
action.
90
00:04:39.240 --> 00:04:44.590
You want to look to see if the spacing between the elbows and the body is
91
00:04:44.590 --> 00:04:45.680
changing a lot,
92
00:04:45.680 --> 00:04:49.970
that can be more independent shoulder motion instead of kind of your rib cage
93
00:04:49.970 --> 00:04:50.480
and your
94
00:04:50.480 --> 00:04:55.830
shoulder blades or if you're looking and you're seeing kind of twisting and
95
00:04:55.830 --> 00:04:57.040
straightening
96
00:04:57.040 --> 00:05:02.160
either in both one direction or the other.
97
00:05:02.160 --> 00:05:05.670
So if there's something funky in your arm motion, I would work from the club
98
00:05:05.670 --> 00:05:06.220
backward
99
00:05:06.220 --> 00:05:10.190
or I would work from the wrist motion to the shoulder motion or to the arm
100
00:05:10.190 --> 00:05:10.920
motion to the
101
00:05:10.920 --> 00:05:12.480
shoulder motion.
102
00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:17.830
And then lastly with the pivot drills, there's only a handful of big pivot
103
00:05:17.830 --> 00:05:18.760
problems.
104
00:05:18.760 --> 00:05:22.300
Either the lower body moves too much, either laterally or rotationally, so
105
00:05:22.300 --> 00:05:22.960
working on that
106
00:05:22.960 --> 00:05:29.000
lower body's ability or the upper body tends to kind of move too much.
107
00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:35.550
The classic kind of high handicap bad putting stroke is if I got set up like
108
00:05:35.550 --> 00:05:36.760
this, then
109
00:05:36.760 --> 00:05:41.960
there's going to be more of a drag the putter back and then there's going to be
110
00:05:41.960 --> 00:05:42.800
a rotation
111
00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:46.880
and an arm extension on the way through and a little bit of a wrist flip.
112
00:05:46.880 --> 00:05:52.230
So it'll kind of look kind of like that, has that classic look of kind of
113
00:05:52.230 --> 00:05:53.760
turning and chasing.
114
00:05:53.760 --> 00:05:57.880
So the shape of the pizza gets off, the suspension point gets off and usually
115
00:05:57.880 --> 00:05:58.960
the acceleration
116
00:05:58.960 --> 00:06:04.310
rate is slow to fast, that causes the whole host of putting consistency
117
00:06:04.310 --> 00:06:05.200
problems.
118
00:06:05.200 --> 00:06:09.570
But this gives just a little quick framework for when you're assessing your
119
00:06:09.570 --> 00:06:10.520
putting stroke
120
00:06:10.520 --> 00:06:14.640
to figure out where you can improve on either your start line or your speed
121
00:06:14.640 --> 00:06:15.440
control.
122
00:06:15.440 --> 00:06:18.690
If you're doing pretty well in practice and you're struggling on the course,
123
00:06:18.690 --> 00:06:19.240
then I find
124
00:06:19.240 --> 00:06:23.100
there's a couple of questions you want to ask yourself to zero in what's going
125
00:06:23.100 --> 00:06:23.480
on.
126
00:06:23.480 --> 00:06:27.290
You first want to ask yourself, did you hit the putt that you wanted, but it
127
00:06:27.290 --> 00:06:27.960
didn't go
128
00:06:27.960 --> 00:06:28.960
in?
129
00:06:28.960 --> 00:06:32.410
If that's the case, I hit the putt exactly how I wanted, then it's more of
130
00:06:32.410 --> 00:06:33.160
working on my
131
00:06:33.160 --> 00:06:34.160
green reading.
132
00:06:34.160 --> 00:06:39.290
So ladders, clocks, refining, maybe trying feet, maybe trying eyes, refining
133
00:06:39.290 --> 00:06:39.800
how I read
134
00:06:39.800 --> 00:06:41.080
the green.
135
00:06:41.080 --> 00:06:46.720
But if I had a putt and I missed my start line or I missed my speed or both, I
136
00:06:46.720 --> 00:06:47.760
would probably
137
00:06:47.760 --> 00:06:51.200
start with improving the start line so that at least you can make most of your
138
00:06:51.200 --> 00:06:51.920
putts inside
139
00:06:51.920 --> 00:06:57.830
10 feet and then work on speed control so that you can make more of your 10 to
140
00:06:57.830 --> 00:06:58.680
25 footers
141
00:06:58.680 --> 00:07:05.480
and lag your putts from 30, 40, 50 feet inside three or four feet.
142
00:07:05.480 --> 00:07:09.440
So that's kind of the hierarchy for if it's breaking down primarily on the
143
00:07:09.440 --> 00:07:10.120
course.
144
00:07:10.120 --> 00:07:13.800
In general, with every putt, you're just trying to figure out, did I miss the
145
00:07:13.800 --> 00:07:14.520
putt because
146
00:07:14.520 --> 00:07:17.920
of my read, my aim, or my stroke.
147
00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:21.480
So last section here, let's look at building a training plan.
148
00:07:21.480 --> 00:07:24.550
So even if you're going to spend 10 minutes or 15 minutes putting, you still
149
00:07:24.550 --> 00:07:24.960
want to have
150
00:07:24.960 --> 00:07:27.400
a plan.
151
00:07:27.400 --> 00:07:31.760
I think there's kind of four big parts to a good putting practice.
152
00:07:31.760 --> 00:07:34.560
You're going to do something to dial in mechanics.
153
00:07:34.560 --> 00:07:40.030
So whether that's working on posture, setup, chopsticks, working on stroke
154
00:07:40.030 --> 00:07:40.960
mechanics,
155
00:07:40.960 --> 00:07:45.800
you're going to do something for a little bit to dial in mechanics.
156
00:07:45.800 --> 00:07:49.080
Then you're going to apply your mechanics to either short putts and working on
157
00:07:49.080 --> 00:07:49.440
start
158
00:07:49.440 --> 00:07:53.560
line or longer putts and working on speed control.
159
00:07:53.560 --> 00:07:58.200
Once you've refined whatever your main skill is for that day or if you've
160
00:07:58.200 --> 00:07:59.480
worked on both,
161
00:07:59.480 --> 00:08:04.830
then you want to try and put yourself in some game like situations to see how
162
00:08:04.830 --> 00:08:05.840
you respond
163
00:08:05.840 --> 00:08:07.680
to a little bit of stress.
164
00:08:07.680 --> 00:08:11.770
One of my favorites was always the Ring of Fire where you had to make eight,
165
00:08:11.770 --> 00:08:12.720
three footers,
166
00:08:12.720 --> 00:08:14.720
four footers, five footers in a row.
167
00:08:14.720 --> 00:08:20.070
I guarantee you on that last five footer, it's taken about 10 to 15 minutes to
168
00:08:20.070 --> 00:08:20.560
get through
169
00:08:20.560 --> 00:08:22.120
that game.
170
00:08:22.120 --> 00:08:26.140
On that last putt, you're going to start feeling some pressure and so that's
171
00:08:26.140 --> 00:08:26.780
going to help
172
00:08:26.780 --> 00:08:30.960
you see how you're going to respond on the course when you start having a
173
00:08:30.960 --> 00:08:31.680
little bit
174
00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:33.680
of doubt.
175
00:08:33.680 --> 00:08:35.920
This is the system I like to use.
176
00:08:35.920 --> 00:08:40.810
I think hopefully this program helps you learn how to be your own coach and how
177
00:08:40.810 --> 00:08:41.440
to assess
178
00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:46.780
your putting stroke and really get laser focused on the one or two things that
179
00:08:46.780 --> 00:08:47.280
are causing
180
00:08:47.280 --> 00:08:48.580
you to struggle.
181
00:08:48.580 --> 00:08:53.930
If you're not sure if you're struggling, compare your benchmarks to those
182
00:08:53.930 --> 00:08:55.760
toward putting data.
183
00:08:55.760 --> 00:09:01.900
Again, I think that anybody can get to a single-digit level of putting, but it
184
00:09:01.900 --> 00:09:02.980
takes a lot of work
185
00:09:02.980 --> 00:09:05.820
to get down into the actual toward numbers.
186
00:09:05.820 --> 00:09:10.070
Again, if you have any questions, comment below, otherwise check out all the
187
00:09:10.070 --> 00:09:10.540
videos
188
00:09:10.540 --> 00:09:16.020
on the right related to the three big skills and how you can master being your
189
00:09:16.020 --> 00:09:16.980
own putting
190
00:09:16.980 --> 00:09:19.420
coach using the Golf Smart Academy system.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.720
Okay golfers, here we are with the fifth class here, we're going to talk about
2
00:00:09.720 --> 00:00:10.840
troubleshooting.
3
00:00:10.840 --> 00:00:15.880
So three big skills, where can they go wrong?
4
00:00:15.880 --> 00:00:17.840
Keep in mind the putting benchmark.
5
00:00:17.840 --> 00:00:24.400
So as a general rule, I say make everything from three feet and in roughly 50%
6
00:00:24.400 --> 00:00:25.280
of around
7
00:00:25.280 --> 00:00:30.620
your eight footers, make one in four of kind of your 10 to 20 footers and then
8
00:00:30.620 --> 00:00:31.200
never put
9
00:00:31.200 --> 00:00:35.280
a three putt from inside of 30 feet.
10
00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:40.750
So with the longer putts, getting them, or if you're struggling with the longer
11
00:00:40.750 --> 00:00:41.240
putts
12
00:00:41.240 --> 00:00:44.820
and the medium putts, then it's primarily working on speed control and green
13
00:00:44.820 --> 00:00:45.480
reading.
14
00:00:45.480 --> 00:00:49.510
If you're struggling more with the shorter putts, then it's probably green
15
00:00:49.510 --> 00:00:50.200
reading as
16
00:00:50.200 --> 00:00:54.120
well as start line, but even more just start line.
17
00:00:54.120 --> 00:00:59.470
So by having these benchmarks, it might help you to prioritize what it is you
18
00:00:59.470 --> 00:01:00.280
need to work
19
00:01:00.280 --> 00:01:01.440
on.
20
00:01:01.440 --> 00:01:06.790
There's only a handful of things that can really go wrong with your putting
21
00:01:06.790 --> 00:01:07.480
stroke.
22
00:01:07.480 --> 00:01:11.720
You can look at it as far as skills or just assessing your overall stroke.
23
00:01:11.720 --> 00:01:17.070
For looking at skills, we've got your face control, your path control, and your
24
00:01:17.070 --> 00:01:17.520
speed
25
00:01:17.520 --> 00:01:19.760
control or tempo acceleration.
26
00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:23.910
So with the face control, I want to start at the wrist and make sure that I'm
27
00:01:23.910 --> 00:01:24.640
not seeing
28
00:01:24.640 --> 00:01:31.890
any crazy wrist action changes and then move on to the hips, making sure that I
29
00:01:31.890 --> 00:01:32.640
've got
30
00:01:32.640 --> 00:01:39.040
my lower body stable, especially if I'm struggling with some of those.
31
00:01:39.040 --> 00:01:44.390
I tend to find hip action shows up in either missing a lot of three footers or
32
00:01:44.390 --> 00:01:45.360
having speed
33
00:01:45.360 --> 00:01:50.560
control issues on my 15, 20 footers.
34
00:01:50.560 --> 00:01:55.910
And then lastly, so if the wrists are okay and the hips are okay, then lastly
35
00:01:55.910 --> 00:01:56.360
what's
36
00:01:56.360 --> 00:02:01.830
going on with the shoulders, but those are kind of the three big buckets if you
37
00:02:01.830 --> 00:02:02.720
're struggling
38
00:02:02.720 --> 00:02:04.280
with the face control drills.
39
00:02:04.280 --> 00:02:08.920
You want to look at your video and really assess what's going on there.
40
00:02:08.920 --> 00:02:11.600
When it comes to path control, I'm going to reverse the order.
41
00:02:11.600 --> 00:02:15.780
I'm going to focus on the hips and the shoulders, kind of get the pivot under
42
00:02:15.780 --> 00:02:16.560
control.
43
00:02:16.560 --> 00:02:21.080
And then I'm going to look at the wrist, but the wrist will have a big impact.
44
00:02:21.080 --> 00:02:27.520
So all three of those can cause you to have a big path issue.
45
00:02:27.520 --> 00:02:34.530
If you remember, the main issues that we will see putting stroke wise would
46
00:02:34.530 --> 00:02:36.520
either be the
47
00:02:36.520 --> 00:02:42.080
putter face is twisting independently, the putter is not traveling, the putter
48
00:02:42.080 --> 00:02:42.680
is kind
49
00:02:42.680 --> 00:02:47.150
of traveling either linearly or kind of having some of this float, basically it
50
00:02:47.150 --> 00:02:47.880
doesn't have
51
00:02:47.880 --> 00:02:54.310
a consistent suspension point just in front of your spine or the whole pizza is
52
00:02:54.310 --> 00:02:55.200
turning.
53
00:02:55.200 --> 00:02:58.890
That usually happens more from the pivot than the arms, but could go from
54
00:02:58.890 --> 00:02:59.720
either level
55
00:02:59.720 --> 00:03:02.560
shoulder turn or too much hip action.
56
00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:08.030
And then lastly, instead of the putter swinging, I'm either guiding it or over
57
00:03:08.030 --> 00:03:09.040
accelerating
58
00:03:09.040 --> 00:03:10.040
it.
59
00:03:10.040 --> 00:03:14.040
So I'm either pushing it, kind of like a battering ram or I'm guiding it where
60
00:03:14.040 --> 00:03:14.800
I'm not letting
61
00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:15.800
it swing.
62
00:03:15.800 --> 00:03:20.520
Both of those can be big problems for speed control.
63
00:03:20.520 --> 00:03:27.050
So with the, so we covered the face and the path now for tempo, we're going to
64
00:03:27.050 --> 00:03:28.400
look at
65
00:03:28.400 --> 00:03:34.070
the hips, we're going to look at the arm extension and we're going to look at
66
00:03:34.070 --> 00:03:35.000
the relationship
67
00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:36.840
of backswing to through swing.
68
00:03:36.840 --> 00:03:42.310
Am I getting equal tilt or am I kind of bringing it back with arms on one and
69
00:03:42.310 --> 00:03:44.120
tilt on the other?
70
00:03:44.120 --> 00:03:45.480
Those can cause some issues.
71
00:03:45.480 --> 00:03:52.360
So we've got kind of videos in this section related to the main problems that I
72
00:03:52.360 --> 00:03:53.320
see with
73
00:03:53.320 --> 00:03:56.040
each one of those core issues.
74
00:03:56.040 --> 00:03:58.800
Now if I'm just looking at my stroke and there's some things that I don't like,
75
00:03:58.800 --> 00:03:59.360
like let's
76
00:03:59.360 --> 00:04:05.190
say I'm seeing a lot of, sorry, I'm seeing a lot of wrist movement and I've
77
00:04:05.190 --> 00:04:06.160
tried some
78
00:04:06.160 --> 00:04:09.400
single arms, I've tried some wrist drills.
79
00:04:09.400 --> 00:04:12.860
Look at the pressure points, look at where your fingers are actually applying
80
00:04:12.860 --> 00:04:13.360
pressure
81
00:04:13.360 --> 00:04:19.400
and make sure that they have some opposing pressure and enough force to prevent
82
00:04:19.400 --> 00:04:19.880
the putter
83
00:04:19.880 --> 00:04:20.880
from rotating.
84
00:04:20.880 --> 00:04:23.560
Got drills that kind of help you with that.
85
00:04:23.560 --> 00:04:27.040
If you're looking at the, you're putting stroke and you're seeing some funky
86
00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:28.040
stuff with your
87
00:04:28.040 --> 00:04:32.440
arm motion, any of these combinations.
88
00:04:32.440 --> 00:04:38.300
You want to look to see if the arm spacing is changing, that can be wrist
89
00:04:38.300 --> 00:04:39.240
action.
90
00:04:39.240 --> 00:04:44.590
You want to look to see if the spacing between the elbows and the body is
91
00:04:44.590 --> 00:04:45.680
changing a lot,
92
00:04:45.680 --> 00:04:49.970
that can be more independent shoulder motion instead of kind of your rib cage
93
00:04:49.970 --> 00:04:50.480
and your
94
00:04:50.480 --> 00:04:55.830
shoulder blades or if you're looking and you're seeing kind of twisting and
95
00:04:55.830 --> 00:04:57.040
straightening
96
00:04:57.040 --> 00:05:02.160
either in both one direction or the other.
97
00:05:02.160 --> 00:05:05.670
So if there's something funky in your arm motion, I would work from the club
98
00:05:05.670 --> 00:05:06.220
backward
99
00:05:06.220 --> 00:05:10.190
or I would work from the wrist motion to the shoulder motion or to the arm
100
00:05:10.190 --> 00:05:10.920
motion to the
101
00:05:10.920 --> 00:05:12.480
shoulder motion.
102
00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:17.830
And then lastly with the pivot drills, there's only a handful of big pivot
103
00:05:17.830 --> 00:05:18.760
problems.
104
00:05:18.760 --> 00:05:22.300
Either the lower body moves too much, either laterally or rotationally, so
105
00:05:22.300 --> 00:05:22.960
working on that
106
00:05:22.960 --> 00:05:29.000
lower body's ability or the upper body tends to kind of move too much.
107
00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:35.550
The classic kind of high handicap bad putting stroke is if I got set up like
108
00:05:35.550 --> 00:05:36.760
this, then
109
00:05:36.760 --> 00:05:41.960
there's going to be more of a drag the putter back and then there's going to be
110
00:05:41.960 --> 00:05:42.800
a rotation
111
00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:46.880
and an arm extension on the way through and a little bit of a wrist flip.
112
00:05:46.880 --> 00:05:52.230
So it'll kind of look kind of like that, has that classic look of kind of
113
00:05:52.230 --> 00:05:53.760
turning and chasing.
114
00:05:53.760 --> 00:05:57.880
So the shape of the pizza gets off, the suspension point gets off and usually
115
00:05:57.880 --> 00:05:58.960
the acceleration
116
00:05:58.960 --> 00:06:04.310
rate is slow to fast, that causes the whole host of putting consistency
117
00:06:04.310 --> 00:06:05.200
problems.
118
00:06:05.200 --> 00:06:09.570
But this gives just a little quick framework for when you're assessing your
119
00:06:09.570 --> 00:06:10.520
putting stroke
120
00:06:10.520 --> 00:06:14.640
to figure out where you can improve on either your start line or your speed
121
00:06:14.640 --> 00:06:15.440
control.
122
00:06:15.440 --> 00:06:18.690
If you're doing pretty well in practice and you're struggling on the course,
123
00:06:18.690 --> 00:06:19.240
then I find
124
00:06:19.240 --> 00:06:23.100
there's a couple of questions you want to ask yourself to zero in what's going
125
00:06:23.100 --> 00:06:23.480
on.
126
00:06:23.480 --> 00:06:27.290
You first want to ask yourself, did you hit the putt that you wanted, but it
127
00:06:27.290 --> 00:06:27.960
didn't go
128
00:06:27.960 --> 00:06:28.960
in?
129
00:06:28.960 --> 00:06:32.410
If that's the case, I hit the putt exactly how I wanted, then it's more of
130
00:06:32.410 --> 00:06:33.160
working on my
131
00:06:33.160 --> 00:06:34.160
green reading.
132
00:06:34.160 --> 00:06:39.290
So ladders, clocks, refining, maybe trying feet, maybe trying eyes, refining
133
00:06:39.290 --> 00:06:39.800
how I read
134
00:06:39.800 --> 00:06:41.080
the green.
135
00:06:41.080 --> 00:06:46.720
But if I had a putt and I missed my start line or I missed my speed or both, I
136
00:06:46.720 --> 00:06:47.760
would probably
137
00:06:47.760 --> 00:06:51.200
start with improving the start line so that at least you can make most of your
138
00:06:51.200 --> 00:06:51.920
putts inside
139
00:06:51.920 --> 00:06:57.830
10 feet and then work on speed control so that you can make more of your 10 to
140
00:06:57.830 --> 00:06:58.680
25 footers
141
00:06:58.680 --> 00:07:05.480
and lag your putts from 30, 40, 50 feet inside three or four feet.
142
00:07:05.480 --> 00:07:09.440
So that's kind of the hierarchy for if it's breaking down primarily on the
143
00:07:09.440 --> 00:07:10.120
course.
144
00:07:10.120 --> 00:07:13.800
In general, with every putt, you're just trying to figure out, did I miss the
145
00:07:13.800 --> 00:07:14.520
putt because
146
00:07:14.520 --> 00:07:17.920
of my read, my aim, or my stroke.
147
00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:21.480
So last section here, let's look at building a training plan.
148
00:07:21.480 --> 00:07:24.550
So even if you're going to spend 10 minutes or 15 minutes putting, you still
149
00:07:24.550 --> 00:07:24.960
want to have
150
00:07:24.960 --> 00:07:27.400
a plan.
151
00:07:27.400 --> 00:07:31.760
I think there's kind of four big parts to a good putting practice.
152
00:07:31.760 --> 00:07:34.560
You're going to do something to dial in mechanics.
153
00:07:34.560 --> 00:07:40.030
So whether that's working on posture, setup, chopsticks, working on stroke
154
00:07:40.030 --> 00:07:40.960
mechanics,
155
00:07:40.960 --> 00:07:45.800
you're going to do something for a little bit to dial in mechanics.
156
00:07:45.800 --> 00:07:49.080
Then you're going to apply your mechanics to either short putts and working on
157
00:07:49.080 --> 00:07:49.440
start
158
00:07:49.440 --> 00:07:53.560
line or longer putts and working on speed control.
159
00:07:53.560 --> 00:07:58.200
Once you've refined whatever your main skill is for that day or if you've
160
00:07:58.200 --> 00:07:59.480
worked on both,
161
00:07:59.480 --> 00:08:04.830
then you want to try and put yourself in some game like situations to see how
162
00:08:04.830 --> 00:08:05.840
you respond
163
00:08:05.840 --> 00:08:07.680
to a little bit of stress.
164
00:08:07.680 --> 00:08:11.770
One of my favorites was always the Ring of Fire where you had to make eight,
165
00:08:11.770 --> 00:08:12.720
three footers,
166
00:08:12.720 --> 00:08:14.720
four footers, five footers in a row.
167
00:08:14.720 --> 00:08:20.070
I guarantee you on that last five footer, it's taken about 10 to 15 minutes to
168
00:08:20.070 --> 00:08:20.560
get through
169
00:08:20.560 --> 00:08:22.120
that game.
170
00:08:22.120 --> 00:08:26.140
On that last putt, you're going to start feeling some pressure and so that's
171
00:08:26.140 --> 00:08:26.780
going to help
172
00:08:26.780 --> 00:08:30.960
you see how you're going to respond on the course when you start having a
173
00:08:30.960 --> 00:08:31.680
little bit
174
00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:33.680
of doubt.
175
00:08:33.680 --> 00:08:35.920
This is the system I like to use.
176
00:08:35.920 --> 00:08:40.810
I think hopefully this program helps you learn how to be your own coach and how
177
00:08:40.810 --> 00:08:41.440
to assess
178
00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:46.780
your putting stroke and really get laser focused on the one or two things that
179
00:08:46.780 --> 00:08:47.280
are causing
180
00:08:47.280 --> 00:08:48.580
you to struggle.
181
00:08:48.580 --> 00:08:53.930
If you're not sure if you're struggling, compare your benchmarks to those
182
00:08:53.930 --> 00:08:55.760
toward putting data.
183
00:08:55.760 --> 00:09:01.900
Again, I think that anybody can get to a single-digit level of putting, but it
184
00:09:01.900 --> 00:09:02.980
takes a lot of work
185
00:09:02.980 --> 00:09:05.820
to get down into the actual toward numbers.
186
00:09:05.820 --> 00:09:10.070
Again, if you have any questions, comment below, otherwise check out all the
187
00:09:10.070 --> 00:09:10.540
videos
188
00:09:10.540 --> 00:09:16.020
on the right related to the three big skills and how you can master being your
189
00:09:16.020 --> 00:09:16.980
own putting
190
00:09:16.980 --> 00:09:19.420
coach using the Golf Smart Academy system.
