The merry-go-round putting drill will help you feel more of a rocking motion than a turning motion

The merry-go-round series of drills helps train your pivot shoulder plane. In the putting version, because we are so close to the golf ball, for most golfers, the rocking action will feel much more of a tilting action than a rotating action. Use the merry-go-round drill to help you improve your start line and putter path.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.700
This drill is the putting merry-go-round.

2
00:00:07.700 --> 00:00:12.960
So we use the merry-go-round to work on the shoulder plane, that component of

3
00:00:12.960 --> 00:00:13.500
the pivot.

4
00:00:13.500 --> 00:00:18.680
So that has a big impact on low point and the shape of your overall swing.

5
00:00:18.680 --> 00:00:24.340
With putting, this is going to help us feel more of a rocking motion or more of

6
00:00:24.340 --> 00:00:24.980
a vertical

7
00:00:24.980 --> 00:00:29.840
motion of the shoulders rather than a horizontal movement of the shoulders.

8
00:00:29.840 --> 00:00:34.340
These were so close to the golf ball, somewhere around two putter heads, maybe

9
00:00:34.340 --> 00:00:35.280
eight inches

10
00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:37.200
away from the golf ball.

11
00:00:37.200 --> 00:00:41.960
If my shoulders are going to turn at the golf ball, then they're going to work

12
00:00:41.960 --> 00:00:42.520
much more

13
00:00:42.520 --> 00:00:45.960
vertically compared to the driver where I'm standing much further away.

14
00:00:45.960 --> 00:00:49.690
So one common problem that I see with a lot of putters is that they turn their

15
00:00:49.690 --> 00:00:50.360
shoulders

16
00:00:50.360 --> 00:00:52.080
more this way.

17
00:00:52.080 --> 00:00:57.280
When you do that, it's very hard to prevent the putter face from rotating a lot

18
00:00:57.280 --> 00:00:57.280
.

19
00:00:57.280 --> 00:01:01.080
The putter path tends to move on too big of an arc.

20
00:01:01.080 --> 00:01:06.340
The arc in the putting stroke happens because the putter head is coming up a

21
00:01:06.340 --> 00:01:07.440
straight line,

22
00:01:07.440 --> 00:01:12.680
not because I'm consciously rotating the club around me on an arc.

23
00:01:12.680 --> 00:01:18.150
If I was to move the grip along a straight line, then the putter head will come

24
00:01:18.150 --> 00:01:18.680
in and

25
00:01:18.680 --> 00:01:22.670
up as the putter shaft travels the straight line, and then as I go through, it

26
00:01:22.670 --> 00:01:23.280
will come

27
00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:25.520
in and up as it travels the straight line.

28
00:01:25.520 --> 00:01:29.600
So in order for me to get the putter shaft to travel on more of a straight line

29
00:01:29.600 --> 00:01:30.300
, I'm going

30
00:01:30.300 --> 00:01:33.800
to do more of this vertical or rocking shoulder action.

31
00:01:33.800 --> 00:01:36.560
So I'm going to get into the merry-go-round position.

32
00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:42.350
So my normal kind of setup where shoulders are kind of over the balls of my

33
00:01:42.350 --> 00:01:43.120
feet.

34
00:01:43.120 --> 00:01:48.910
And now from here, I'm going to try and point the butt end of the club at the

35
00:01:48.910 --> 00:01:50.240
ball and then

36
00:01:50.240 --> 00:01:51.520
the putter head at the ball.

37
00:01:51.520 --> 00:01:57.310
And this will feel very much like I'm doing more of a vertical movement like

38
00:01:57.310 --> 00:01:58.280
this rather

39
00:01:58.280 --> 00:02:01.360
than a horizontal movement like that.

40
00:02:01.360 --> 00:02:06.780
This can be a good pattern to combo with the chopsticks because then you can

41
00:02:06.780 --> 00:02:07.600
kind of take

42
00:02:07.600 --> 00:02:11.960
the arm out of it, especially if you're doing the version where you're holding

43
00:02:11.960 --> 00:02:12.480
on to the

44
00:02:12.480 --> 00:02:13.480
club.

45
00:02:13.480 --> 00:02:18.640
So now I'm going to basically hold my wrist in a pretty consistent position.

46
00:02:18.640 --> 00:02:22.800
I'm going to have a little bit of shoulder blade complementary movement.

47
00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:29.270
And I'm just going to rock the shoulders and I just didn't quite hit that hard

48
00:02:29.270 --> 00:02:30.320
enough.

49
00:02:30.320 --> 00:02:36.320
So the goal of the feel here is that I have very little turn and I'm getting

50
00:02:36.320 --> 00:02:37.160
into this

51
00:02:37.160 --> 00:02:42.760
follow through position here rather than that follow through position there.

52
00:02:42.760 --> 00:02:44.080
So we'll do one more.

53
00:02:44.080 --> 00:02:48.480
Hold the wrist in that position and then go ahead and rock the shoulders.

54
00:02:48.480 --> 00:02:49.480
That hit something.

55
00:02:49.480 --> 00:02:52.400
It's going to slow up and I need to work on my speed control.

56
00:02:52.400 --> 00:02:54.480
But both of those had pretty good start line.

57
00:02:54.480 --> 00:02:58.350
So if you're struggling with your start line, double check your shoulder plane

58
00:02:58.350 --> 00:02:59.480
and if you're

59
00:02:59.480 --> 00:03:02.520
not having a very good shoulder plane, you can always do this merry-go-round

60
00:03:02.520 --> 00:03:03.000
drill.

61
00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:08.510
If you're practicing at home, I like to do this right up against a doorway so

62
00:03:08.510 --> 00:03:09.160
that I

63
00:03:09.160 --> 00:03:14.430
can get really quick feedback if I'm turning level, I would hit the door where

64
00:03:14.430 --> 00:03:15.040
if I'm up

65
00:03:15.040 --> 00:03:19.070
against the corner of the wall or the doorway, if I'm moving more vertically

66
00:03:19.070 --> 00:03:19.880
than the door

67
00:03:19.880 --> 00:03:22.200
was right here, I wouldn't hit it.

68
00:03:22.200 --> 00:03:25.280
So train smart in putting.

69
00:03:25.280 --> 00:03:31.000
That means training more of a vertical or tilting shoulder action.
