Learn to analyze your own putting stroke on video
The putting stroke is responsible for the start line and speed control. There are different elements that influence each of these. To master your putting stroke, you'll want to learn how to analyze your own video and identify why you are having trouble with distance control, direction, or both. The major components for distance control are tempo and length of swing. The major component for the start line is face control.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.120
Welcome back golfers. Let's take a look at how to analyze your putting stroke
2
00:00:10.120 --> 00:00:11.280
on video.
3
00:00:11.280 --> 00:00:15.820
So a big part of being your own coach is learning how to assess yourself on
4
00:00:15.820 --> 00:00:17.300
video and putting
5
00:00:17.300 --> 00:00:22.440
is no different. Now when you're assessing yourself on video, you can either
6
00:00:22.440 --> 00:00:22.880
bias what
7
00:00:22.880 --> 00:00:28.580
you're looking at towards factors that influence start line or speed control.
8
00:00:28.580 --> 00:00:28.760
Green reading
9
00:00:28.760 --> 00:00:33.990
is kind of a separate skill that you won't really see on video. But in this
10
00:00:33.990 --> 00:00:34.520
video, we
11
00:00:34.520 --> 00:00:38.210
are going to look at more building your general stroke, so kind of the general
12
00:00:38.210 --> 00:00:38.840
themes that
13
00:00:38.840 --> 00:00:44.160
will help us with both start line and speed. So keep in the back of your mind
14
00:00:44.160 --> 00:00:44.680
that we
15
00:00:44.680 --> 00:00:51.860
are striving for this pizza wedge shape where basically there's a suspension
16
00:00:51.860 --> 00:00:52.720
point or an
17
00:00:52.720 --> 00:00:59.370
anchor point and the putter is moving around that anchor point with very little
18
00:00:59.370 --> 00:01:00.960
face rotation.
19
00:01:00.960 --> 00:01:06.180
So it either looks like the classic pendulum model or like a slice of pizza
20
00:01:06.180 --> 00:01:06.880
where the crust
21
00:01:06.880 --> 00:01:12.370
is going to be tracing or sorry where the putter head is going to be tracing
22
00:01:12.370 --> 00:01:13.640
the crust. Now
23
00:01:13.640 --> 00:01:18.870
I should say that the bottom of the swing is going to be before hitting the
24
00:01:18.870 --> 00:01:19.760
golf ball,
25
00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:24.960
so it's not 100% symmetric which is part of the other reason why it doesn't
26
00:01:24.960 --> 00:01:25.240
quite follow
27
00:01:25.240 --> 00:01:32.570
the pendulum model. But as a model, as a visual, I like the general shape of
28
00:01:32.570 --> 00:01:33.480
the slice of pizza
29
00:01:33.480 --> 00:01:38.100
just finishing a little bit higher. From the down the line, you'll see that
30
00:01:38.100 --> 00:01:38.880
that slice
31
00:01:38.880 --> 00:01:45.360
of pizza is on a slight angle due to the line angle of the club. Alright, when
32
00:01:45.360 --> 00:01:45.920
we look at
33
00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:50.320
video analysis for the general shape, we're primarily going to look at the face
34
00:01:50.320 --> 00:01:50.720
on and
35
00:01:50.720 --> 00:01:54.720
the down the line, but if we're really investigating start line control, which
36
00:01:54.720 --> 00:01:55.760
we'll do in another
37
00:01:55.760 --> 00:02:00.100
video, we're going to prioritize looking at an overhead. So I'll show you how
38
00:02:00.100 --> 00:02:00.400
to set
39
00:02:00.400 --> 00:02:05.630
up your tripod to make that pretty easy. From the face on view, we have the
40
00:02:05.630 --> 00:02:05.920
suspension
41
00:02:05.920 --> 00:02:10.370
point, we can look at the length of stroke. I actually recommend filming the
42
00:02:10.370 --> 00:02:10.960
video in
43
00:02:10.960 --> 00:02:14.960
regular speed, not high speed so that you can get a general sense of the
44
00:02:14.960 --> 00:02:17.680
acceleration rate.
45
00:02:17.680 --> 00:02:22.910
And then we're also looking for kind of how well you maintain the consistency
46
00:02:22.910 --> 00:02:24.760
of the triangle
47
00:02:24.760 --> 00:02:29.990
of the arms. And we can also look at the consistency in the location of ball
48
00:02:29.990 --> 00:02:31.080
position. From the
49
00:02:31.080 --> 00:02:36.310
down the line, we can look at the setup posture angles, those have a big
50
00:02:36.310 --> 00:02:37.640
influence on both
51
00:02:37.640 --> 00:02:41.900
start line as well as speed. We can look at alignment, we can look at the
52
00:02:41.900 --> 00:02:42.680
distance from
53
00:02:42.680 --> 00:02:46.070
the golf ball or the position of your eyes compared to the golf ball that can
54
00:02:46.070 --> 00:02:46.520
help. We
55
00:02:46.520 --> 00:02:50.850
can look at the amount of iron bend. And then when we dig into looking at the
56
00:02:50.850 --> 00:02:52.080
actual stroke,
57
00:02:52.080 --> 00:02:56.430
this is a great view for looking at some of the start line elements, looking at
58
00:02:56.430 --> 00:02:58.760
face rotation
59
00:02:58.760 --> 00:03:03.990
and looking at whether the torso is moving on more of a tilt or more of just a
60
00:03:03.990 --> 00:03:06.600
level turn.
61
00:03:06.600 --> 00:03:10.990
From the overhead, we're primarily going to be looking at what's happening with
62
00:03:10.990 --> 00:03:11.600
the putter
63
00:03:11.600 --> 00:03:19.390
itself. And we'll primarily be looking at the path of the club and the face
64
00:03:19.390 --> 00:03:20.840
rotation.
65
00:03:20.840 --> 00:03:26.680
Okay so we'll keep this in mind as we start looking at building the basic
66
00:03:26.680 --> 00:03:28.040
stroke, we're
67
00:03:28.040 --> 00:03:33.280
going to start by looking at the face on view. Now what I have drawn on here
68
00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:34.320
with Luke Donald
69
00:03:34.320 --> 00:03:38.940
or a couple of reference lines that we'll look at when we learn how to analyze
70
00:03:38.940 --> 00:03:40.200
our own video.
71
00:03:40.200 --> 00:03:45.950
But basically I've drawn a line up from the shaft at the top of the swing or at
72
00:03:45.950 --> 00:03:46.400
a dress
73
00:03:46.400 --> 00:03:50.060
position, top of the swing and finish. And what you'll see is that they all
74
00:03:50.060 --> 00:03:50.680
converge
75
00:03:50.680 --> 00:03:55.910
in a point above the golf ball or sorry in line with the golf ball or just in
76
00:03:55.910 --> 00:03:56.280
front of
77
00:03:56.280 --> 00:04:02.780
it. That's kind of what we mean by the pizza shape. And if we, I'm sure some
78
00:04:02.780 --> 00:04:03.320
people will
79
00:04:03.320 --> 00:04:07.730
submit their swings. But if you look at a lot of amateurs, what will happen is
80
00:04:07.730 --> 00:04:08.480
often times
81
00:04:08.480 --> 00:04:12.620
it's point one at the top of the swing might be pointing over here or over here
82
00:04:12.620 --> 00:04:13.080
. And then
83
00:04:13.080 --> 00:04:18.600
it impact is pointing here or back here. There's a lot of change going on. And
84
00:04:18.600 --> 00:04:18.880
there's not
85
00:04:18.880 --> 00:04:22.360
really one common suspension point. That's because you're doing it too much
86
00:04:22.360 --> 00:04:22.840
with your
87
00:04:22.840 --> 00:04:28.220
arms and hands and not enough with the big muscles. So to get this pizza shape,
88
00:04:28.220 --> 00:04:28.640
we want
89
00:04:28.640 --> 00:04:34.670
quiet legs, quiet wrists, not totally dead but quiet. As one of my buddies Stan
90
00:04:34.670 --> 00:04:35.200
Utley
91
00:04:35.200 --> 00:04:40.400
says, I want you to use your wrist but I don't want it to look wristy. So we
92
00:04:40.400 --> 00:04:40.560
want to have
93
00:04:40.560 --> 00:04:45.280
a little bit of feel there but we want very little motion of the wrist. We want
94
00:04:45.280 --> 00:04:45.640
limited
95
00:04:45.640 --> 00:04:50.810
arm extension as well. We want the majority of the stroke happening more up
96
00:04:50.810 --> 00:04:51.120
here in the
97
00:04:51.120 --> 00:05:00.490
shoulders and upper back. Okay so similar to what we did for the stock swing, I
98
00:05:00.490 --> 00:05:00.720
'm going
99
00:05:00.720 --> 00:05:04.770
to show you how to analyze the basic positions. Now with the putting stroke, we
100
00:05:04.770 --> 00:05:05.080
're pretty
101
00:05:05.080 --> 00:05:12.120
much going to look at setup, top of backswing impact finish and the timing of
102
00:05:12.120 --> 00:05:13.040
when your
103
00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:17.130
eyes track the golf ball. That's just kind of a little bonus one. But usually
104
00:05:17.130 --> 00:05:17.680
just set
105
00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:21.710
up top of the swing impact finish or the four main positions that you're going
106
00:05:21.710 --> 00:05:22.320
to look at
107
00:05:22.320 --> 00:05:28.270
when analyzing your putting stroke. So here it's setup. We can look at the
108
00:05:28.270 --> 00:05:29.280
spine angle
109
00:05:29.280 --> 00:05:34.760
or the spine bend. We can also break that down and look at the neck angle. I
110
00:05:34.760 --> 00:05:35.480
want the
111
00:05:35.480 --> 00:05:39.500
top of your neck with most conventional putting stroke styles unless you have a
112
00:05:39.500 --> 00:05:41.000
long putter.
113
00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:43.850
But with most conventional styles, you want the top of your neck getting close
114
00:05:43.850 --> 00:05:44.400
to parallel
115
00:05:44.400 --> 00:05:49.790
to the ground. We can look at the eye position being either over the golf ball
116
00:05:49.790 --> 00:05:50.720
or slightly
117
00:05:50.720 --> 00:05:55.950
inside of it. I'd say you have a window of somewhere whether it's on top to a
118
00:05:55.950 --> 00:05:56.480
few inches
119
00:05:56.480 --> 00:06:02.980
inside, maybe up to three, four inches inside. We want to look at the shaft to
120
00:06:02.980 --> 00:06:03.720
the forearm
121
00:06:03.720 --> 00:06:10.160
angle there. So that primarily comes down to your grip and ulnar deviation. And
122
00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:10.160
then
123
00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:14.850
we want to look at the alignment or the forearms parallel, shoulders parallel,
124
00:06:14.850 --> 00:06:16.280
hips, thighs.
125
00:06:16.280 --> 00:06:21.450
Similar alignment structure is looking to see if you have any overt, either
126
00:06:21.450 --> 00:06:22.160
open or closed
127
00:06:22.160 --> 00:06:28.650
elements. We want to look at the knee bend and we want to look at the heel toe
128
00:06:28.650 --> 00:06:28.720
weight
129
00:06:28.720 --> 00:06:33.840
distribution either setting too much in the heels or the toes. But a good
130
00:06:33.840 --> 00:06:34.280
little reference
131
00:06:34.280 --> 00:06:39.770
line is if you drew a line down from the inside of the armpit, it should
132
00:06:39.770 --> 00:06:41.280
basically go through
133
00:06:41.280 --> 00:06:46.460
the tip of the elbow, the knees and the middle of the foot or the shoe laces.
134
00:06:46.460 --> 00:06:46.800
So that's kind
135
00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:54.600
of a good stacked stable position. And that kind of sets you up usually on a
136
00:06:54.600 --> 00:06:55.360
pretty good
137
00:06:55.360 --> 00:06:59.840
angle and distance from the golf ball. Oftentimes, if you are, if your eyes are
138
00:06:59.840 --> 00:07:00.560
too far over
139
00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:05.790
or too far inside, usually comes down to either knee bend, spine bend or arm
140
00:07:05.790 --> 00:07:06.880
bend. It's a
141
00:07:06.880 --> 00:07:12.590
little bit off. From the face on view, we can see kind of your arm triangle.
142
00:07:12.590 --> 00:07:13.520
Where are
143
00:07:13.520 --> 00:07:18.960
your elbows and your arms compared to your shoulders? I tend to prefer slightly
144
00:07:18.960 --> 00:07:19.640
inside,
145
00:07:19.640 --> 00:07:24.870
but there's some really good putters who go outside, shoulder or elbows outside
146
00:07:24.870 --> 00:07:25.120
of the
147
00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:30.490
shoulder line. Really just depends on how well you can keep that consistently
148
00:07:30.490 --> 00:07:31.320
the same.
149
00:07:31.320 --> 00:07:35.660
Ball position slightly ahead of the middle of your stance. And then weight
150
00:07:35.660 --> 00:07:36.440
looking, are
151
00:07:36.440 --> 00:07:40.360
you too much on your right foot or left foot or just looking at where that is?
152
00:07:40.360 --> 00:07:40.880
I prefer
153
00:07:40.880 --> 00:07:46.110
slightly on the left foot, but that's not 100%. There's some really good put
154
00:07:46.110 --> 00:07:46.400
ters who
155
00:07:46.400 --> 00:07:51.630
tend to have a little bit more weight on that rear foot. Okay, top of backswing
156
00:07:51.630 --> 00:07:52.180
position
157
00:07:52.180 --> 00:07:57.740
you'll see that I added a second vertical line. Now we have an idea of where my
158
00:07:57.740 --> 00:07:58.440
suspension
159
00:07:58.440 --> 00:08:03.670
point hopefully is when we look at the follow through position. From the face
160
00:08:03.670 --> 00:08:04.600
on, this is
161
00:08:04.600 --> 00:08:09.260
a great place for looking at face, sorry, length of backswing. But you can also
162
00:08:09.260 --> 00:08:09.560
look
163
00:08:09.560 --> 00:08:14.790
at the club face angle. So from the face on camera, we don't want to see a
164
00:08:14.790 --> 00:08:15.240
whole lot
165
00:08:15.240 --> 00:08:19.800
of the putter face, depending on the length of the swing. That usually means
166
00:08:19.800 --> 00:08:20.580
that there's
167
00:08:20.580 --> 00:08:24.670
some independent rotation either of the arms, or the shoulders are turning a
168
00:08:24.670 --> 00:08:25.320
little bit
169
00:08:25.320 --> 00:08:30.720
too flat. We can also start to see that the shoulders rotate, did the elbows
170
00:08:30.720 --> 00:08:31.600
straighten,
171
00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:35.910
did the wrist start to flip, and we can start to look for sway. We can look for
172
00:08:35.910 --> 00:08:36.480
too much
173
00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:41.760
lateral motion versus more of a turn and tilt. The down the line is probably a
174
00:08:41.760 --> 00:08:42.040
better
175
00:08:42.040 --> 00:08:45.970
view at the top of the swing for looking at club face angle, but the overhead
176
00:08:45.970 --> 00:08:46.560
is by far
177
00:08:46.560 --> 00:08:51.780
the best. So this can give you a quick snapshot if you're having some face
178
00:08:51.780 --> 00:08:52.500
control issues.
179
00:08:52.500 --> 00:08:56.170
You can see is, was it more of a backswing movement or more of a downswing
180
00:08:56.170 --> 00:08:56.940
movement.
181
00:08:56.940 --> 00:09:03.440
We can also look at the shoulder tilt versus turn here. Looking basically to
182
00:09:03.440 --> 00:09:03.860
see are the
183
00:09:03.860 --> 00:09:09.600
shoulders turning more on and axis down towards the golf ball, or are they
184
00:09:09.600 --> 00:09:11.660
turning more level.
185
00:09:11.660 --> 00:09:14.610
Potentially you could even have them working vertical, though I haven't seen
186
00:09:14.610 --> 00:09:15.100
that as too
187
00:09:15.100 --> 00:09:20.330
much of a problem. Usually it's the turning to level that causes some major
188
00:09:20.330 --> 00:09:20.900
face control
189
00:09:20.900 --> 00:09:28.930
issues. Depending on where you set up the camera, the putter shaft, if it moves
190
00:09:28.930 --> 00:09:29.220
in that
191
00:09:29.220 --> 00:09:33.450
straight line, the putter head will come up off the ground, but it will stay in
192
00:09:33.450 --> 00:09:33.780
line
193
00:09:33.780 --> 00:09:40.340
with that line you drew at set up, the forearm, the shaft plane. This is a
194
00:09:40.340 --> 00:09:40.980
great place for
195
00:09:40.980 --> 00:09:46.210
looking to make sure that we haven't had any hip rotation. So we don't want to
196
00:09:46.210 --> 00:09:46.620
have probably
197
00:09:46.620 --> 00:09:51.850
anything below the belly button or below the hips moving in the putting stroke.
198
00:09:51.850 --> 00:09:51.980
This is
199
00:09:51.980 --> 00:09:59.700
usually that first checkpoint to look for. Now if we come back to impact, it's
200
00:09:59.700 --> 00:09:59.980
going
201
00:09:59.980 --> 00:10:05.210
to look very similar to set up. Oftentimes the shaft is just a little bit
202
00:10:05.210 --> 00:10:05.700
forward or
203
00:10:05.700 --> 00:10:12.940
close to the same depending on the shaft position that you started with. If you
204
00:10:12.940 --> 00:10:13.700
set with it
205
00:10:13.700 --> 00:10:17.380
a little bit more back, you might be forward and you set with it way forward.
206
00:10:17.380 --> 00:10:17.980
But it will
207
00:10:17.980 --> 00:10:23.900
be relatively close. This is another good little mini checkpoint for looking at
208
00:10:23.900 --> 00:10:24.780
Swaver's
209
00:10:24.780 --> 00:10:30.010
turn. This is a great time for look for, especially rotations of the shoulder
210
00:10:30.010 --> 00:10:31.300
or straightening
211
00:10:31.300 --> 00:10:36.890
in the arms or flipping of the wrist. If you are going to use some active wrist
212
00:10:36.890 --> 00:10:37.480
motion
213
00:10:37.480 --> 00:10:41.810
on the video, you want it to appear mostly during transition. You want to have
214
00:10:41.810 --> 00:10:42.500
relatively
215
00:10:42.500 --> 00:10:47.730
stable or quiet wrist and shoulders through the ball and more of the rotation
216
00:10:47.730 --> 00:10:48.540
happening
217
00:10:48.540 --> 00:10:53.770
more at the shoulder blades and the upper back and ribs. So when we do, when we
218
00:10:53.770 --> 00:10:54.180
look
219
00:10:54.180 --> 00:10:58.720
at the start line video, we'll talk more about how to assess kind of the club
220
00:10:58.720 --> 00:10:59.460
face angle
221
00:10:59.460 --> 00:11:04.540
here. But this is a good place to look at why did the ball start where it did.
222
00:11:04.540 --> 00:11:05.180
The overwhelming
223
00:11:05.180 --> 00:11:09.330
majority of where the ball starts is comes down to club face angle. So looking
224
00:11:09.330 --> 00:11:10.060
at impact,
225
00:11:10.060 --> 00:11:13.660
you can see if the club is closed, it'll start left. If it's open, it'll start
226
00:11:13.660 --> 00:11:14.420
right.
227
00:11:14.420 --> 00:11:18.210
But the path has a big influence on how you're going to be able to control the
228
00:11:18.210 --> 00:11:18.900
face. We can
229
00:11:18.900 --> 00:11:25.410
also look for the shoulder tilt and again the hip rotation. So a couple little
230
00:11:25.410 --> 00:11:25.980
checkpoints
231
00:11:25.980 --> 00:11:31.710
there. This is probably from the global look at the swing. This is probably the
232
00:11:31.710 --> 00:11:32.780
least important.
233
00:11:32.780 --> 00:11:38.010
But if you do some of the zoomed in ways of assessing your face control, then
234
00:11:38.010 --> 00:11:38.180
looking
235
00:11:38.180 --> 00:11:42.920
at impact, especially from the down the line, can be really useful. Okay. Now
236
00:11:42.920 --> 00:11:43.380
we jump to
237
00:11:43.380 --> 00:11:47.110
the finish or the follow through position. There's a lot of great information
238
00:11:47.110 --> 00:11:47.460
if you
239
00:11:47.460 --> 00:11:52.690
just look at the top of the swing and the finish. We can look here at the
240
00:11:52.690 --> 00:11:53.340
finish position
241
00:11:53.340 --> 00:11:56.820
and again, that we're following the shafts and creating this kind of stable
242
00:11:56.820 --> 00:11:57.420
suspension
243
00:11:57.420 --> 00:12:02.670
point somewhere up around the bottom of your rib cage. Looking at the club
244
00:12:02.670 --> 00:12:03.420
height and finish.
245
00:12:03.420 --> 00:12:10.290
A lot of bad putters tend to keep the club head low to the ground too long. If
246
00:12:10.290 --> 00:12:10.980
that happens,
247
00:12:10.980 --> 00:12:15.450
that usually means that I have more of a lengthening movement, more of a lung
248
00:12:15.450 --> 00:12:16.700
ing type movement,
249
00:12:16.700 --> 00:12:20.620
or more of a level shoulder short, or a combination of all three. That can
250
00:12:20.620 --> 00:12:22.140
create some really hard
251
00:12:22.140 --> 00:12:27.620
timing issues for face and path. You can also look from the face on view at the
252
00:12:27.620 --> 00:12:28.180
club face
253
00:12:28.180 --> 00:12:33.920
angle. But again, that's easiest to see from overhead or from the down the line
254
00:12:33.920 --> 00:12:36.260
. This is
255
00:12:36.260 --> 00:12:41.490
a great place for looking at shoulder rotation. You can also look at the arm
256
00:12:41.490 --> 00:12:43.060
spacing. I actually
257
00:12:43.060 --> 00:12:47.820
prefer to see that arm even a little bit closer as we'll look at some pros. I
258
00:12:47.820 --> 00:12:48.340
might have gotten
259
00:12:48.340 --> 00:12:52.490
a little sloppy here over the last six months or so, not really doing a whole
260
00:12:52.490 --> 00:12:53.380
lot of putting
261
00:12:53.380 --> 00:12:58.610
practice. It looks like I'm getting a little bit wider with my arms than normal
262
00:12:58.610 --> 00:12:59.340
, so that's
263
00:12:59.340 --> 00:13:04.520
the elbow spacing. You'll notice the putter is this far by and my eyes are
264
00:13:04.520 --> 00:13:04.980
still looking
265
00:13:04.980 --> 00:13:11.850
down. That is looking at more the timing of the quiet eye. In theory, I don't
266
00:13:11.850 --> 00:13:12.420
really care
267
00:13:12.420 --> 00:13:18.360
if your eyes track the golf ball, but I want them to stay quiet until contact.
268
00:13:18.360 --> 00:13:19.180
I like most
269
00:13:19.180 --> 00:13:23.680
of my students to train that they stay quiet and then look once the footer or
270
00:13:23.680 --> 00:13:24.700
once the stroke
271
00:13:24.700 --> 00:13:32.440
is finished. We'll see that with Tiger in some of his videos as well. From here
272
00:13:32.440 --> 00:13:32.980
, this
273
00:13:32.980 --> 00:13:38.210
is a great place for looking at the shoulder turn versus tilt. Is the shoulder
274
00:13:38.210 --> 00:13:38.500
working
275
00:13:38.500 --> 00:13:42.900
more down the plane or is it turning more level and you'll have any hip
276
00:13:42.900 --> 00:13:44.220
rotation, any kind
277
00:13:44.220 --> 00:13:48.530
of little hit and chase move. The other thing that's really useful that I don't
278
00:13:48.530 --> 00:13:49.060
have listed
279
00:13:49.060 --> 00:13:52.990
here, but we'll talk about in the speed control, is looking at the length of
280
00:13:52.990 --> 00:13:54.180
backswing compared
281
00:13:54.180 --> 00:13:59.410
to follow through and roughly seeing those about the same. That can help
282
00:13:59.410 --> 00:14:00.060
tremendously
283
00:14:00.060 --> 00:14:06.620
with speed control. From face on, the big keys you're going to look at are
284
00:14:06.620 --> 00:14:08.020
length of backswing
285
00:14:08.020 --> 00:14:11.750
compared to follow through. The height of the putter as it comes into the ball
286
00:14:11.750 --> 00:14:12.300
compared
287
00:14:12.300 --> 00:14:17.520
to after the ball. I want to see it higher in the follow through. The shoulder
288
00:14:17.520 --> 00:14:17.940
turn versus
289
00:14:17.940 --> 00:14:24.960
tilt, so whether the shoulders are turning this way. The arm extension or
290
00:14:24.960 --> 00:14:26.080
rotation or
291
00:14:26.080 --> 00:14:31.280
lack thereof, we want to see basically the arm consistency staying the same.
292
00:14:31.280 --> 00:14:31.540
Then we want
293
00:14:31.540 --> 00:14:35.860
to see the timing of when your eyes follow the golf ball or head rotation.
294
00:14:35.860 --> 00:14:42.360
Here's a dynamic look at the stroke that we've been looking at in this
295
00:14:42.360 --> 00:14:43.740
presentation.
296
00:14:43.740 --> 00:14:49.440
When I videotape a putting stroke, I'm going to scan through a couple big areas
297
00:14:49.440 --> 00:14:49.940
. We want
298
00:14:49.940 --> 00:14:55.640
to look at the arm structure. Looking at the arm bend, we can see maybe just
299
00:14:55.640 --> 00:14:56.260
the increase
300
00:14:56.260 --> 00:15:02.760
of that lean arm or moving that shoulder on the way through. We can look at the
301
00:15:02.760 --> 00:15:03.260
pivot
302
00:15:03.260 --> 00:15:06.850
location. Is most of the movement happening here in the shoulder girdle or is
303
00:15:06.850 --> 00:15:07.500
it happening
304
00:15:07.500 --> 00:15:11.320
more down in the lower body? Lower body looks pretty good here. We can look at
305
00:15:11.320 --> 00:15:11.940
the length
306
00:15:11.940 --> 00:15:20.240
of the stroke as well as the overall acceleration. I like the appearance that
307
00:15:20.240 --> 00:15:22.260
the putter is moving
308
00:15:22.260 --> 00:15:28.750
at a constant speed the whole time. There's no rapid acceleration or deceler
309
00:15:28.750 --> 00:15:29.580
ation. Then
310
00:15:29.580 --> 00:15:38.460
we can look at the face location. We can look at the club head to see if we
311
00:15:38.460 --> 00:15:38.860
break it down
312
00:15:38.860 --> 00:15:43.080
to the top of the swing. Is the putter really facing the camera or has there
313
00:15:43.080 --> 00:15:43.980
been minimal
314
00:15:43.980 --> 00:15:52.010
rotation? Then same thing in the follow through. Looking at a rough idea of if
315
00:15:52.010 --> 00:15:52.580
the face is
316
00:15:52.580 --> 00:15:57.810
rotating on the way through. We can also look at the height of the putter,
317
00:15:57.810 --> 00:15:58.300
making sure that
318
00:15:58.300 --> 00:16:04.040
the putter is slightly coming up through the stroke. Lastly, we can look at the
319
00:16:04.040 --> 00:16:04.460
timing
320
00:16:04.460 --> 00:16:09.690
of the head rotation. I like to see golfers finish their stroke before their
321
00:16:09.690 --> 00:16:10.300
eyes start
322
00:16:10.300 --> 00:16:14.680
to track the golf ball. In reality, if the eyes start tracking now as I'm
323
00:16:14.680 --> 00:16:15.500
hitting the
324
00:16:15.500 --> 00:16:19.290
golf ball, it's not going to be a big deal. But oftentimes they'll start
325
00:16:19.290 --> 00:16:20.460
tracking sooner,
326
00:16:20.460 --> 00:16:25.690
causing the shoulders to get open, which can cause either pulls or pushes
327
00:16:25.690 --> 00:16:26.220
depending on
328
00:16:26.220 --> 00:16:32.140
what the release style or the way that you're using your arms in the funny
329
00:16:32.140 --> 00:16:32.780
strip.
330
00:16:32.780 --> 00:16:40.110
From the down the line, we're looking primarily at more of a control element. I
331
00:16:40.110 --> 00:16:40.540
would probably
332
00:16:40.540 --> 00:16:44.470
look at lower body stability first, even with listed seconds. Hip rotation,
333
00:16:44.470 --> 00:16:45.420
knee rotation,
334
00:16:45.420 --> 00:16:50.290
making sure that from belly button down there's very little change between top
335
00:16:50.290 --> 00:16:51.180
of backswing and
336
00:16:51.180 --> 00:16:56.700
follow through. Looking at the shoulder plane or tilt versus turn, this is a
337
00:16:56.700 --> 00:16:57.580
great place to see
338
00:16:57.580 --> 00:17:02.810
if the shoulder is working down versus turning more level. Then looking at the
339
00:17:02.810 --> 00:17:03.660
control elements,
340
00:17:03.660 --> 00:17:10.150
looking at the swing path. The path and face, I should say. Looking at the down
341
00:17:10.150 --> 00:17:10.700
the line is the
342
00:17:10.700 --> 00:17:16.400
putter face going way open, as the path going outside in, too much inside. This
343
00:17:16.400 --> 00:17:17.180
gives you a lot
344
00:17:17.180 --> 00:17:23.680
of good diagnostic information to see what am I going to experiment with when I
345
00:17:23.680 --> 00:17:24.540
'm trying to
346
00:17:24.540 --> 00:17:29.410
fine-tune my drills or fine-tune my arm motions. If my lower body's stable and
347
00:17:29.410 --> 00:17:30.300
this is moving in
348
00:17:30.300 --> 00:17:35.690
a good path, then anything related to the putter face and the putter path are
349
00:17:35.690 --> 00:17:37.100
primarily coming down
350
00:17:37.100 --> 00:17:40.860
to arm overactivity or your arm movement pattern.
351
00:17:44.620 --> 00:17:49.780
Okay, so now if we're looking from the down the line, we're still going to kind
352
00:17:49.780 --> 00:17:50.700
of scan the overall
353
00:17:50.700 --> 00:17:55.050
putting stroke. We'll have a few fewer things to look at than say the face on
354
00:17:55.050 --> 00:17:56.940
view. First,
355
00:17:56.940 --> 00:18:01.640
I like to look at the pivot and the lower body stability, and I like to look at
356
00:18:01.640 --> 00:18:02.700
the torso angle
357
00:18:02.700 --> 00:18:07.180
or the angle that the shoulders are working. I want them working more down at
358
00:18:07.180 --> 00:18:07.820
the golf ball as
359
00:18:07.820 --> 00:18:12.980
opposed to the shoulder working horizontally across the screen. Then I'm going
360
00:18:12.980 --> 00:18:14.780
to look at the quality
361
00:18:14.780 --> 00:18:21.340
of the roll if I use the line and overall the general shape of the stroke. Is
362
00:18:21.340 --> 00:18:23.020
the putter coming
363
00:18:23.020 --> 00:18:29.920
well out and across? Is it coming too far in and out or in and in? It can often
364
00:18:29.920 --> 00:18:30.700
happen.
365
00:18:31.260 --> 00:18:36.700
It's better when it's more symmetric. I like to see a gentle stroke. In my mind
366
00:18:36.700 --> 00:18:38.220
, I'm imagining
367
00:18:38.220 --> 00:18:41.580
a vertical line and you can see that there's just a little bit of curve on the
368
00:18:41.580 --> 00:18:42.460
way in and then a
369
00:18:42.460 --> 00:18:47.290
little bit of curve on the way out. We can look at the putter face to see if it
370
00:18:47.290 --> 00:18:49.020
's twisting on the way
371
00:18:49.020 --> 00:18:55.980
through. You can see that it stays relatively square on this putt. Then lastly,
372
00:18:55.980 --> 00:18:57.260
looking at the
373
00:18:57.260 --> 00:19:01.660
height of the putter coming up as opposed to staying low to the ground too long
374
00:19:01.660 --> 00:19:02.460
in the follow-through.
375
00:19:02.460 --> 00:19:08.380
You can also look at the timing of when the eyes look, when the head rotates.
376
00:19:08.380 --> 00:19:09.420
That can be
377
00:19:09.420 --> 00:19:13.980
helpful, especially if you're missing a lot of your short putts. Let's briefly
378
00:19:13.980 --> 00:19:15.260
look at some pros.
379
00:19:15.260 --> 00:19:19.430
You've seen my swing, but these are the guys we really want to learn from. We
380
00:19:19.430 --> 00:19:20.060
'll look at some
381
00:19:20.060 --> 00:19:24.640
of my favorite strokes. We've got Luke Donald first. If you were just looking
382
00:19:24.640 --> 00:19:25.660
at one position,
383
00:19:25.660 --> 00:19:29.260
I think this is the most important to look at, but if you're comparing top of
384
00:19:29.260 --> 00:19:29.980
the swing and finish,
385
00:19:29.980 --> 00:19:35.130
you get a lot of information. You can look at the height of the putter, the
386
00:19:35.130 --> 00:19:36.460
amount of face rotation,
387
00:19:36.460 --> 00:19:41.100
and maintaining that arm triangle, all those classic positions. You can see
388
00:19:41.100 --> 00:19:41.980
very little knee
389
00:19:41.980 --> 00:19:46.180
rotation, very little wrist change, and just scanning across the pictures, you
390
00:19:46.180 --> 00:19:46.860
'll see most of
391
00:19:46.860 --> 00:19:52.380
the movement happening in this band of the body right there. Now, Jordan Smith,
392
00:19:52.380 --> 00:19:53.340
I included in here
393
00:19:53.340 --> 00:19:59.040
because he's got a little more of a forward press because of that left-hand low
394
00:19:59.040 --> 00:19:59.420
.
395
00:19:59.420 --> 00:20:05.920
His suspension point is more in line closer to the left shoulder instead of in
396
00:20:05.920 --> 00:20:06.540
the belly button,
397
00:20:06.540 --> 00:20:10.940
but if you look at where the shaft is pointing, it's pretty much pointing in
398
00:20:10.940 --> 00:20:12.220
the same position
399
00:20:12.220 --> 00:20:15.560
at all times. Remember, when most of you look at your putting stroke, you're
400
00:20:15.560 --> 00:20:16.300
going to tend to see
401
00:20:16.300 --> 00:20:21.020
either it pointing. You're not going to see those lines converge. You're going
402
00:20:21.020 --> 00:20:22.380
to see them pointing
403
00:20:22.380 --> 00:20:26.300
oftentimes in different positions, and that usually comes down to either the
404
00:20:26.300 --> 00:20:32.220
stableness of the pivot or the quality of the arm movements. So he still gets
405
00:20:32.220 --> 00:20:33.020
the putter rising,
406
00:20:33.020 --> 00:20:39.520
he still gets the kind of classic pizza shape, still has lower body stability,
407
00:20:39.520 --> 00:20:39.980
all those good
408
00:20:39.980 --> 00:20:43.520
things. He's just shifted a little bit forward because of the grip. Now, he has
409
00:20:43.520 --> 00:20:44.300
to potentially
410
00:20:44.300 --> 00:20:48.860
adjust loft and other things or ball position, but he's still got all the big
411
00:20:48.860 --> 00:20:50.060
pieces in play for
412
00:20:50.060 --> 00:20:58.620
being a really consistent putter. Now, we've got Steve Stricker, so another
413
00:20:58.620 --> 00:21:00.060
really good classic
414
00:21:00.060 --> 00:21:03.270
looking putting stroke. He actually, we'll see from the down the line, tends to
415
00:21:03.270 --> 00:21:03.820
stand a little
416
00:21:03.820 --> 00:21:09.050
bit taller. If you have any back issues that get really aggravated from getting
417
00:21:09.050 --> 00:21:10.620
into a 40-degree
418
00:21:10.620 --> 00:21:14.990
angle or a classic putting stroke, he's a good one to emulate where he's a
419
00:21:14.990 --> 00:21:16.220
little bit taller and
420
00:21:16.220 --> 00:21:22.710
has a little bit more exaggerated ulnar deviation, but still gets all the
421
00:21:22.710 --> 00:21:24.060
classic pieces. Love this
422
00:21:24.060 --> 00:21:30.560
follow through. Putter has good rise there. No change in the wrist angles. Very
423
00:21:30.560 --> 00:21:31.580
good for rolling
424
00:21:31.580 --> 00:21:37.940
the ball consistently. And then with Tiger here, you can scan the pictures, and
425
00:21:37.940 --> 00:21:38.620
you'll notice I
426
00:21:38.620 --> 00:21:42.850
included an extra one here where you can see how long he keeps his eyes down,
427
00:21:42.850 --> 00:21:44.060
especially when he's
428
00:21:45.020 --> 00:21:51.210
training or practicing. So the hat pretty much doesn't change through there,
429
00:21:51.210 --> 00:21:52.300
and then once
430
00:21:52.300 --> 00:21:55.340
he gets to about this point, then he looks to see where the putter is going.
431
00:21:55.340 --> 00:21:56.940
But that can train
432
00:21:56.940 --> 00:22:00.670
kind of the quiet eye. I think that's part of the reason that he's been so
433
00:22:00.670 --> 00:22:02.140
successful with pressure
434
00:22:02.140 --> 00:22:06.010
putts. If you have a tendency to look really quickly, that can creep into
435
00:22:06.010 --> 00:22:06.860
looking before
436
00:22:06.860 --> 00:22:10.420
you hit the ball, and that can often create some shoulder plane or arm
437
00:22:10.420 --> 00:22:11.660
extension issues.
438
00:22:13.660 --> 00:22:17.180
Okay, from the down the line, I think there are fewer things to look at, but
439
00:22:17.180 --> 00:22:18.140
looking at the amount
440
00:22:18.140 --> 00:22:23.270
of lower body rotation. And then this is a good place for looking at the angle
441
00:22:23.270 --> 00:22:24.060
of the shoulder
442
00:22:24.060 --> 00:22:30.920
turn versus tilt. So you can see here in the follow through, I have that frame
443
00:22:30.920 --> 00:22:31.260
out of order,
444
00:22:31.260 --> 00:22:36.490
but you can see here in the follow through there, the shoulder is working more
445
00:22:36.490 --> 00:22:38.140
down instead of around.
446
00:22:38.140 --> 00:22:41.930
A lot of you, when you see yourself on video, that shoulder is going to be
447
00:22:41.930 --> 00:22:42.940
working more out
448
00:22:42.940 --> 00:22:47.730
that way instead of down towards the golf ball, and that can be a big source of
449
00:22:47.730 --> 00:22:48.940
putter face control
450
00:22:48.940 --> 00:22:54.220
issues. You can also see just that classic setup where he gets in a really good
451
00:22:54.220 --> 00:22:55.340
position where the
452
00:22:55.340 --> 00:22:59.320
armpit elbow, knees, and middle defeat are kind of in line, and the putter
453
00:22:59.320 --> 00:23:00.380
shaft is in a really
454
00:23:00.380 --> 00:23:05.900
good angle. For a long time, when he was the number one player in the world, he
455
00:23:05.900 --> 00:23:06.700
was by far
456
00:23:06.700 --> 00:23:10.900
the best putter. So he's a good one to emulate. Here's Steve Sturker, who we
457
00:23:10.900 --> 00:23:12.140
talked about being
458
00:23:12.140 --> 00:23:17.510
a little bit taller, a little bit more wrist kind of set in more max ulnar
459
00:23:17.510 --> 00:23:18.780
deviation, which can help
460
00:23:18.780 --> 00:23:25.710
block out. He still gets, even though he has that ulnar deviation, he still
461
00:23:25.710 --> 00:23:27.100
gets really good
462
00:23:27.100 --> 00:23:31.240
tilt and the rise of the putter on the way through with very little face
463
00:23:31.240 --> 00:23:33.340
rotation. In fact, you can
464
00:23:33.340 --> 00:23:38.850
see the height of the putter there to there. He has quite what appears to be a
465
00:23:38.850 --> 00:23:41.020
significant rise angle,
466
00:23:41.020 --> 00:23:48.530
but overall, all the big pieces in play. Now, Tiger classically from the down
467
00:23:48.530 --> 00:23:49.340
the line
468
00:23:49.340 --> 00:23:53.180
doesn't have the shaft and the forearms in line, so that creates, he has a
469
00:23:53.180 --> 00:23:54.300
little bit more face
470
00:23:54.300 --> 00:24:00.790
rotation than the average pro. He's talked about when he puts well that he
471
00:24:00.790 --> 00:24:01.740
feels a release and he
472
00:24:01.740 --> 00:24:06.370
feels the putter, the toe of the putter kind of release. That's partly why,
473
00:24:06.370 --> 00:24:07.660
just because of that
474
00:24:07.660 --> 00:24:14.140
setup position. But again, this is right around the frame where his head starts
475
00:24:14.140 --> 00:24:14.700
to rotate and
476
00:24:14.700 --> 00:24:20.140
he starts to look at the golf ball. So training that quiet eye, I think that's
477
00:24:20.140 --> 00:24:20.780
one way to get
478
00:24:20.780 --> 00:24:25.250
more resilient under pressure. Okay, and then just being able to kind of see
479
00:24:25.250 --> 00:24:26.460
the swing in 3D,
480
00:24:26.460 --> 00:24:32.960
it's helpful to look at the start, the down the line as well as the face on
481
00:24:32.960 --> 00:24:34.460
kind of simultaneously.
482
00:24:34.460 --> 00:24:42.740
So you can see the the global changes. You'll see mostly shoulder movement, not
483
00:24:42.740 --> 00:24:43.340
a lot of arm
484
00:24:43.340 --> 00:24:47.180
change, but everything works a little bit up the plane. And then really on the
485
00:24:47.180 --> 00:24:47.820
follow through,
486
00:24:47.820 --> 00:24:51.820
I think this is one of the best positions to analyze when you're looking at the
487
00:24:51.820 --> 00:24:52.540
general theme
488
00:24:52.540 --> 00:24:58.240
of your stroke. Keeping the keeping the arm triangle while still getting more
489
00:24:58.240 --> 00:24:59.340
tilt to get that putter
490
00:24:59.340 --> 00:25:03.690
rising. I usually use that as kind of like the simple mantra for building your
491
00:25:03.690 --> 00:25:04.700
overall general
492
00:25:04.700 --> 00:25:11.900
stroke. So here we have Steve Stricker. You can scan through. He's doing the
493
00:25:11.900 --> 00:25:13.580
similar things.
494
00:25:13.580 --> 00:25:21.640
And we added the extra frame for tiger for when his head looks. But you can see
495
00:25:21.640 --> 00:25:22.700
how high on this
496
00:25:22.700 --> 00:25:27.930
length of a stroke the putter is in the follow through. That comes from having
497
00:25:27.930 --> 00:25:28.860
the more dominant
498
00:25:28.860 --> 00:25:34.300
engine happening here in the body. Kind of like that rather than if the putter
499
00:25:34.300 --> 00:25:35.100
stays really low,
500
00:25:35.100 --> 00:25:38.460
it's a good sign that you're getting some lengthening happening from those arms
501
00:25:38.460 --> 00:25:41.180
. So knowing what to
502
00:25:41.180 --> 00:25:45.870
look for and knowing how to analyze your putting stroke is one of the key steps
503
00:25:45.870 --> 00:25:46.860
for being able
504
00:25:46.860 --> 00:25:52.090
to become your own coach. So I recommend putting yourself on video and looking
505
00:25:52.090 --> 00:25:53.180
at it, compare it,
506
00:25:53.180 --> 00:25:58.400
and this will help shape which drills will be most applicable for you. In some
507
00:25:58.400 --> 00:25:58.940
subsequent videos,
508
00:25:58.940 --> 00:26:08.710
we will take a look at prioritizing your stroke based on start line or speed
509
00:26:08.710 --> 00:26:10.380
control.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.120
Welcome back golfers. Let's take a look at how to analyze your putting stroke
2
00:00:10.120 --> 00:00:11.280
on video.
3
00:00:11.280 --> 00:00:15.820
So a big part of being your own coach is learning how to assess yourself on
4
00:00:15.820 --> 00:00:17.300
video and putting
5
00:00:17.300 --> 00:00:22.440
is no different. Now when you're assessing yourself on video, you can either
6
00:00:22.440 --> 00:00:22.880
bias what
7
00:00:22.880 --> 00:00:28.580
you're looking at towards factors that influence start line or speed control.
8
00:00:28.580 --> 00:00:28.760
Green reading
9
00:00:28.760 --> 00:00:33.990
is kind of a separate skill that you won't really see on video. But in this
10
00:00:33.990 --> 00:00:34.520
video, we
11
00:00:34.520 --> 00:00:38.210
are going to look at more building your general stroke, so kind of the general
12
00:00:38.210 --> 00:00:38.840
themes that
13
00:00:38.840 --> 00:00:44.160
will help us with both start line and speed. So keep in the back of your mind
14
00:00:44.160 --> 00:00:44.680
that we
15
00:00:44.680 --> 00:00:51.860
are striving for this pizza wedge shape where basically there's a suspension
16
00:00:51.860 --> 00:00:52.720
point or an
17
00:00:52.720 --> 00:00:59.370
anchor point and the putter is moving around that anchor point with very little
18
00:00:59.370 --> 00:01:00.960
face rotation.
19
00:01:00.960 --> 00:01:06.180
So it either looks like the classic pendulum model or like a slice of pizza
20
00:01:06.180 --> 00:01:06.880
where the crust
21
00:01:06.880 --> 00:01:12.370
is going to be tracing or sorry where the putter head is going to be tracing
22
00:01:12.370 --> 00:01:13.640
the crust. Now
23
00:01:13.640 --> 00:01:18.870
I should say that the bottom of the swing is going to be before hitting the
24
00:01:18.870 --> 00:01:19.760
golf ball,
25
00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:24.960
so it's not 100% symmetric which is part of the other reason why it doesn't
26
00:01:24.960 --> 00:01:25.240
quite follow
27
00:01:25.240 --> 00:01:32.570
the pendulum model. But as a model, as a visual, I like the general shape of
28
00:01:32.570 --> 00:01:33.480
the slice of pizza
29
00:01:33.480 --> 00:01:38.100
just finishing a little bit higher. From the down the line, you'll see that
30
00:01:38.100 --> 00:01:38.880
that slice
31
00:01:38.880 --> 00:01:45.360
of pizza is on a slight angle due to the line angle of the club. Alright, when
32
00:01:45.360 --> 00:01:45.920
we look at
33
00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:50.320
video analysis for the general shape, we're primarily going to look at the face
34
00:01:50.320 --> 00:01:50.720
on and
35
00:01:50.720 --> 00:01:54.720
the down the line, but if we're really investigating start line control, which
36
00:01:54.720 --> 00:01:55.760
we'll do in another
37
00:01:55.760 --> 00:02:00.100
video, we're going to prioritize looking at an overhead. So I'll show you how
38
00:02:00.100 --> 00:02:00.400
to set
39
00:02:00.400 --> 00:02:05.630
up your tripod to make that pretty easy. From the face on view, we have the
40
00:02:05.630 --> 00:02:05.920
suspension
41
00:02:05.920 --> 00:02:10.370
point, we can look at the length of stroke. I actually recommend filming the
42
00:02:10.370 --> 00:02:10.960
video in
43
00:02:10.960 --> 00:02:14.960
regular speed, not high speed so that you can get a general sense of the
44
00:02:14.960 --> 00:02:17.680
acceleration rate.
45
00:02:17.680 --> 00:02:22.910
And then we're also looking for kind of how well you maintain the consistency
46
00:02:22.910 --> 00:02:24.760
of the triangle
47
00:02:24.760 --> 00:02:29.990
of the arms. And we can also look at the consistency in the location of ball
48
00:02:29.990 --> 00:02:31.080
position. From the
49
00:02:31.080 --> 00:02:36.310
down the line, we can look at the setup posture angles, those have a big
50
00:02:36.310 --> 00:02:37.640
influence on both
51
00:02:37.640 --> 00:02:41.900
start line as well as speed. We can look at alignment, we can look at the
52
00:02:41.900 --> 00:02:42.680
distance from
53
00:02:42.680 --> 00:02:46.070
the golf ball or the position of your eyes compared to the golf ball that can
54
00:02:46.070 --> 00:02:46.520
help. We
55
00:02:46.520 --> 00:02:50.850
can look at the amount of iron bend. And then when we dig into looking at the
56
00:02:50.850 --> 00:02:52.080
actual stroke,
57
00:02:52.080 --> 00:02:56.430
this is a great view for looking at some of the start line elements, looking at
58
00:02:56.430 --> 00:02:58.760
face rotation
59
00:02:58.760 --> 00:03:03.990
and looking at whether the torso is moving on more of a tilt or more of just a
60
00:03:03.990 --> 00:03:06.600
level turn.
61
00:03:06.600 --> 00:03:10.990
From the overhead, we're primarily going to be looking at what's happening with
62
00:03:10.990 --> 00:03:11.600
the putter
63
00:03:11.600 --> 00:03:19.390
itself. And we'll primarily be looking at the path of the club and the face
64
00:03:19.390 --> 00:03:20.840
rotation.
65
00:03:20.840 --> 00:03:26.680
Okay so we'll keep this in mind as we start looking at building the basic
66
00:03:26.680 --> 00:03:28.040
stroke, we're
67
00:03:28.040 --> 00:03:33.280
going to start by looking at the face on view. Now what I have drawn on here
68
00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:34.320
with Luke Donald
69
00:03:34.320 --> 00:03:38.940
or a couple of reference lines that we'll look at when we learn how to analyze
70
00:03:38.940 --> 00:03:40.200
our own video.
71
00:03:40.200 --> 00:03:45.950
But basically I've drawn a line up from the shaft at the top of the swing or at
72
00:03:45.950 --> 00:03:46.400
a dress
73
00:03:46.400 --> 00:03:50.060
position, top of the swing and finish. And what you'll see is that they all
74
00:03:50.060 --> 00:03:50.680
converge
75
00:03:50.680 --> 00:03:55.910
in a point above the golf ball or sorry in line with the golf ball or just in
76
00:03:55.910 --> 00:03:56.280
front of
77
00:03:56.280 --> 00:04:02.780
it. That's kind of what we mean by the pizza shape. And if we, I'm sure some
78
00:04:02.780 --> 00:04:03.320
people will
79
00:04:03.320 --> 00:04:07.730
submit their swings. But if you look at a lot of amateurs, what will happen is
80
00:04:07.730 --> 00:04:08.480
often times
81
00:04:08.480 --> 00:04:12.620
it's point one at the top of the swing might be pointing over here or over here
82
00:04:12.620 --> 00:04:13.080
. And then
83
00:04:13.080 --> 00:04:18.600
it impact is pointing here or back here. There's a lot of change going on. And
84
00:04:18.600 --> 00:04:18.880
there's not
85
00:04:18.880 --> 00:04:22.360
really one common suspension point. That's because you're doing it too much
86
00:04:22.360 --> 00:04:22.840
with your
87
00:04:22.840 --> 00:04:28.220
arms and hands and not enough with the big muscles. So to get this pizza shape,
88
00:04:28.220 --> 00:04:28.640
we want
89
00:04:28.640 --> 00:04:34.670
quiet legs, quiet wrists, not totally dead but quiet. As one of my buddies Stan
90
00:04:34.670 --> 00:04:35.200
Utley
91
00:04:35.200 --> 00:04:40.400
says, I want you to use your wrist but I don't want it to look wristy. So we
92
00:04:40.400 --> 00:04:40.560
want to have
93
00:04:40.560 --> 00:04:45.280
a little bit of feel there but we want very little motion of the wrist. We want
94
00:04:45.280 --> 00:04:45.640
limited
95
00:04:45.640 --> 00:04:50.810
arm extension as well. We want the majority of the stroke happening more up
96
00:04:50.810 --> 00:04:51.120
here in the
97
00:04:51.120 --> 00:05:00.490
shoulders and upper back. Okay so similar to what we did for the stock swing, I
98
00:05:00.490 --> 00:05:00.720
'm going
99
00:05:00.720 --> 00:05:04.770
to show you how to analyze the basic positions. Now with the putting stroke, we
100
00:05:04.770 --> 00:05:05.080
're pretty
101
00:05:05.080 --> 00:05:12.120
much going to look at setup, top of backswing impact finish and the timing of
102
00:05:12.120 --> 00:05:13.040
when your
103
00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:17.130
eyes track the golf ball. That's just kind of a little bonus one. But usually
104
00:05:17.130 --> 00:05:17.680
just set
105
00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:21.710
up top of the swing impact finish or the four main positions that you're going
106
00:05:21.710 --> 00:05:22.320
to look at
107
00:05:22.320 --> 00:05:28.270
when analyzing your putting stroke. So here it's setup. We can look at the
108
00:05:28.270 --> 00:05:29.280
spine angle
109
00:05:29.280 --> 00:05:34.760
or the spine bend. We can also break that down and look at the neck angle. I
110
00:05:34.760 --> 00:05:35.480
want the
111
00:05:35.480 --> 00:05:39.500
top of your neck with most conventional putting stroke styles unless you have a
112
00:05:39.500 --> 00:05:41.000
long putter.
113
00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:43.850
But with most conventional styles, you want the top of your neck getting close
114
00:05:43.850 --> 00:05:44.400
to parallel
115
00:05:44.400 --> 00:05:49.790
to the ground. We can look at the eye position being either over the golf ball
116
00:05:49.790 --> 00:05:50.720
or slightly
117
00:05:50.720 --> 00:05:55.950
inside of it. I'd say you have a window of somewhere whether it's on top to a
118
00:05:55.950 --> 00:05:56.480
few inches
119
00:05:56.480 --> 00:06:02.980
inside, maybe up to three, four inches inside. We want to look at the shaft to
120
00:06:02.980 --> 00:06:03.720
the forearm
121
00:06:03.720 --> 00:06:10.160
angle there. So that primarily comes down to your grip and ulnar deviation. And
122
00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:10.160
then
123
00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:14.850
we want to look at the alignment or the forearms parallel, shoulders parallel,
124
00:06:14.850 --> 00:06:16.280
hips, thighs.
125
00:06:16.280 --> 00:06:21.450
Similar alignment structure is looking to see if you have any overt, either
126
00:06:21.450 --> 00:06:22.160
open or closed
127
00:06:22.160 --> 00:06:28.650
elements. We want to look at the knee bend and we want to look at the heel toe
128
00:06:28.650 --> 00:06:28.720
weight
129
00:06:28.720 --> 00:06:33.840
distribution either setting too much in the heels or the toes. But a good
130
00:06:33.840 --> 00:06:34.280
little reference
131
00:06:34.280 --> 00:06:39.770
line is if you drew a line down from the inside of the armpit, it should
132
00:06:39.770 --> 00:06:41.280
basically go through
133
00:06:41.280 --> 00:06:46.460
the tip of the elbow, the knees and the middle of the foot or the shoe laces.
134
00:06:46.460 --> 00:06:46.800
So that's kind
135
00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:54.600
of a good stacked stable position. And that kind of sets you up usually on a
136
00:06:54.600 --> 00:06:55.360
pretty good
137
00:06:55.360 --> 00:06:59.840
angle and distance from the golf ball. Oftentimes, if you are, if your eyes are
138
00:06:59.840 --> 00:07:00.560
too far over
139
00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:05.790
or too far inside, usually comes down to either knee bend, spine bend or arm
140
00:07:05.790 --> 00:07:06.880
bend. It's a
141
00:07:06.880 --> 00:07:12.590
little bit off. From the face on view, we can see kind of your arm triangle.
142
00:07:12.590 --> 00:07:13.520
Where are
143
00:07:13.520 --> 00:07:18.960
your elbows and your arms compared to your shoulders? I tend to prefer slightly
144
00:07:18.960 --> 00:07:19.640
inside,
145
00:07:19.640 --> 00:07:24.870
but there's some really good putters who go outside, shoulder or elbows outside
146
00:07:24.870 --> 00:07:25.120
of the
147
00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:30.490
shoulder line. Really just depends on how well you can keep that consistently
148
00:07:30.490 --> 00:07:31.320
the same.
149
00:07:31.320 --> 00:07:35.660
Ball position slightly ahead of the middle of your stance. And then weight
150
00:07:35.660 --> 00:07:36.440
looking, are
151
00:07:36.440 --> 00:07:40.360
you too much on your right foot or left foot or just looking at where that is?
152
00:07:40.360 --> 00:07:40.880
I prefer
153
00:07:40.880 --> 00:07:46.110
slightly on the left foot, but that's not 100%. There's some really good put
154
00:07:46.110 --> 00:07:46.400
ters who
155
00:07:46.400 --> 00:07:51.630
tend to have a little bit more weight on that rear foot. Okay, top of backswing
156
00:07:51.630 --> 00:07:52.180
position
157
00:07:52.180 --> 00:07:57.740
you'll see that I added a second vertical line. Now we have an idea of where my
158
00:07:57.740 --> 00:07:58.440
suspension
159
00:07:58.440 --> 00:08:03.670
point hopefully is when we look at the follow through position. From the face
160
00:08:03.670 --> 00:08:04.600
on, this is
161
00:08:04.600 --> 00:08:09.260
a great place for looking at face, sorry, length of backswing. But you can also
162
00:08:09.260 --> 00:08:09.560
look
163
00:08:09.560 --> 00:08:14.790
at the club face angle. So from the face on camera, we don't want to see a
164
00:08:14.790 --> 00:08:15.240
whole lot
165
00:08:15.240 --> 00:08:19.800
of the putter face, depending on the length of the swing. That usually means
166
00:08:19.800 --> 00:08:20.580
that there's
167
00:08:20.580 --> 00:08:24.670
some independent rotation either of the arms, or the shoulders are turning a
168
00:08:24.670 --> 00:08:25.320
little bit
169
00:08:25.320 --> 00:08:30.720
too flat. We can also start to see that the shoulders rotate, did the elbows
170
00:08:30.720 --> 00:08:31.600
straighten,
171
00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:35.910
did the wrist start to flip, and we can start to look for sway. We can look for
172
00:08:35.910 --> 00:08:36.480
too much
173
00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:41.760
lateral motion versus more of a turn and tilt. The down the line is probably a
174
00:08:41.760 --> 00:08:42.040
better
175
00:08:42.040 --> 00:08:45.970
view at the top of the swing for looking at club face angle, but the overhead
176
00:08:45.970 --> 00:08:46.560
is by far
177
00:08:46.560 --> 00:08:51.780
the best. So this can give you a quick snapshot if you're having some face
178
00:08:51.780 --> 00:08:52.500
control issues.
179
00:08:52.500 --> 00:08:56.170
You can see is, was it more of a backswing movement or more of a downswing
180
00:08:56.170 --> 00:08:56.940
movement.
181
00:08:56.940 --> 00:09:03.440
We can also look at the shoulder tilt versus turn here. Looking basically to
182
00:09:03.440 --> 00:09:03.860
see are the
183
00:09:03.860 --> 00:09:09.600
shoulders turning more on and axis down towards the golf ball, or are they
184
00:09:09.600 --> 00:09:11.660
turning more level.
185
00:09:11.660 --> 00:09:14.610
Potentially you could even have them working vertical, though I haven't seen
186
00:09:14.610 --> 00:09:15.100
that as too
187
00:09:15.100 --> 00:09:20.330
much of a problem. Usually it's the turning to level that causes some major
188
00:09:20.330 --> 00:09:20.900
face control
189
00:09:20.900 --> 00:09:28.930
issues. Depending on where you set up the camera, the putter shaft, if it moves
190
00:09:28.930 --> 00:09:29.220
in that
191
00:09:29.220 --> 00:09:33.450
straight line, the putter head will come up off the ground, but it will stay in
192
00:09:33.450 --> 00:09:33.780
line
193
00:09:33.780 --> 00:09:40.340
with that line you drew at set up, the forearm, the shaft plane. This is a
194
00:09:40.340 --> 00:09:40.980
great place for
195
00:09:40.980 --> 00:09:46.210
looking to make sure that we haven't had any hip rotation. So we don't want to
196
00:09:46.210 --> 00:09:46.620
have probably
197
00:09:46.620 --> 00:09:51.850
anything below the belly button or below the hips moving in the putting stroke.
198
00:09:51.850 --> 00:09:51.980
This is
199
00:09:51.980 --> 00:09:59.700
usually that first checkpoint to look for. Now if we come back to impact, it's
200
00:09:59.700 --> 00:09:59.980
going
201
00:09:59.980 --> 00:10:05.210
to look very similar to set up. Oftentimes the shaft is just a little bit
202
00:10:05.210 --> 00:10:05.700
forward or
203
00:10:05.700 --> 00:10:12.940
close to the same depending on the shaft position that you started with. If you
204
00:10:12.940 --> 00:10:13.700
set with it
205
00:10:13.700 --> 00:10:17.380
a little bit more back, you might be forward and you set with it way forward.
206
00:10:17.380 --> 00:10:17.980
But it will
207
00:10:17.980 --> 00:10:23.900
be relatively close. This is another good little mini checkpoint for looking at
208
00:10:23.900 --> 00:10:24.780
Swaver's
209
00:10:24.780 --> 00:10:30.010
turn. This is a great time for look for, especially rotations of the shoulder
210
00:10:30.010 --> 00:10:31.300
or straightening
211
00:10:31.300 --> 00:10:36.890
in the arms or flipping of the wrist. If you are going to use some active wrist
212
00:10:36.890 --> 00:10:37.480
motion
213
00:10:37.480 --> 00:10:41.810
on the video, you want it to appear mostly during transition. You want to have
214
00:10:41.810 --> 00:10:42.500
relatively
215
00:10:42.500 --> 00:10:47.730
stable or quiet wrist and shoulders through the ball and more of the rotation
216
00:10:47.730 --> 00:10:48.540
happening
217
00:10:48.540 --> 00:10:53.770
more at the shoulder blades and the upper back and ribs. So when we do, when we
218
00:10:53.770 --> 00:10:54.180
look
219
00:10:54.180 --> 00:10:58.720
at the start line video, we'll talk more about how to assess kind of the club
220
00:10:58.720 --> 00:10:59.460
face angle
221
00:10:59.460 --> 00:11:04.540
here. But this is a good place to look at why did the ball start where it did.
222
00:11:04.540 --> 00:11:05.180
The overwhelming
223
00:11:05.180 --> 00:11:09.330
majority of where the ball starts is comes down to club face angle. So looking
224
00:11:09.330 --> 00:11:10.060
at impact,
225
00:11:10.060 --> 00:11:13.660
you can see if the club is closed, it'll start left. If it's open, it'll start
226
00:11:13.660 --> 00:11:14.420
right.
227
00:11:14.420 --> 00:11:18.210
But the path has a big influence on how you're going to be able to control the
228
00:11:18.210 --> 00:11:18.900
face. We can
229
00:11:18.900 --> 00:11:25.410
also look for the shoulder tilt and again the hip rotation. So a couple little
230
00:11:25.410 --> 00:11:25.980
checkpoints
231
00:11:25.980 --> 00:11:31.710
there. This is probably from the global look at the swing. This is probably the
232
00:11:31.710 --> 00:11:32.780
least important.
233
00:11:32.780 --> 00:11:38.010
But if you do some of the zoomed in ways of assessing your face control, then
234
00:11:38.010 --> 00:11:38.180
looking
235
00:11:38.180 --> 00:11:42.920
at impact, especially from the down the line, can be really useful. Okay. Now
236
00:11:42.920 --> 00:11:43.380
we jump to
237
00:11:43.380 --> 00:11:47.110
the finish or the follow through position. There's a lot of great information
238
00:11:47.110 --> 00:11:47.460
if you
239
00:11:47.460 --> 00:11:52.690
just look at the top of the swing and the finish. We can look here at the
240
00:11:52.690 --> 00:11:53.340
finish position
241
00:11:53.340 --> 00:11:56.820
and again, that we're following the shafts and creating this kind of stable
242
00:11:56.820 --> 00:11:57.420
suspension
243
00:11:57.420 --> 00:12:02.670
point somewhere up around the bottom of your rib cage. Looking at the club
244
00:12:02.670 --> 00:12:03.420
height and finish.
245
00:12:03.420 --> 00:12:10.290
A lot of bad putters tend to keep the club head low to the ground too long. If
246
00:12:10.290 --> 00:12:10.980
that happens,
247
00:12:10.980 --> 00:12:15.450
that usually means that I have more of a lengthening movement, more of a lung
248
00:12:15.450 --> 00:12:16.700
ing type movement,
249
00:12:16.700 --> 00:12:20.620
or more of a level shoulder short, or a combination of all three. That can
250
00:12:20.620 --> 00:12:22.140
create some really hard
251
00:12:22.140 --> 00:12:27.620
timing issues for face and path. You can also look from the face on view at the
252
00:12:27.620 --> 00:12:28.180
club face
253
00:12:28.180 --> 00:12:33.920
angle. But again, that's easiest to see from overhead or from the down the line
254
00:12:33.920 --> 00:12:36.260
. This is
255
00:12:36.260 --> 00:12:41.490
a great place for looking at shoulder rotation. You can also look at the arm
256
00:12:41.490 --> 00:12:43.060
spacing. I actually
257
00:12:43.060 --> 00:12:47.820
prefer to see that arm even a little bit closer as we'll look at some pros. I
258
00:12:47.820 --> 00:12:48.340
might have gotten
259
00:12:48.340 --> 00:12:52.490
a little sloppy here over the last six months or so, not really doing a whole
260
00:12:52.490 --> 00:12:53.380
lot of putting
261
00:12:53.380 --> 00:12:58.610
practice. It looks like I'm getting a little bit wider with my arms than normal
262
00:12:58.610 --> 00:12:59.340
, so that's
263
00:12:59.340 --> 00:13:04.520
the elbow spacing. You'll notice the putter is this far by and my eyes are
264
00:13:04.520 --> 00:13:04.980
still looking
265
00:13:04.980 --> 00:13:11.850
down. That is looking at more the timing of the quiet eye. In theory, I don't
266
00:13:11.850 --> 00:13:12.420
really care
267
00:13:12.420 --> 00:13:18.360
if your eyes track the golf ball, but I want them to stay quiet until contact.
268
00:13:18.360 --> 00:13:19.180
I like most
269
00:13:19.180 --> 00:13:23.680
of my students to train that they stay quiet and then look once the footer or
270
00:13:23.680 --> 00:13:24.700
once the stroke
271
00:13:24.700 --> 00:13:32.440
is finished. We'll see that with Tiger in some of his videos as well. From here
272
00:13:32.440 --> 00:13:32.980
, this
273
00:13:32.980 --> 00:13:38.210
is a great place for looking at the shoulder turn versus tilt. Is the shoulder
274
00:13:38.210 --> 00:13:38.500
working
275
00:13:38.500 --> 00:13:42.900
more down the plane or is it turning more level and you'll have any hip
276
00:13:42.900 --> 00:13:44.220
rotation, any kind
277
00:13:44.220 --> 00:13:48.530
of little hit and chase move. The other thing that's really useful that I don't
278
00:13:48.530 --> 00:13:49.060
have listed
279
00:13:49.060 --> 00:13:52.990
here, but we'll talk about in the speed control, is looking at the length of
280
00:13:52.990 --> 00:13:54.180
backswing compared
281
00:13:54.180 --> 00:13:59.410
to follow through and roughly seeing those about the same. That can help
282
00:13:59.410 --> 00:14:00.060
tremendously
283
00:14:00.060 --> 00:14:06.620
with speed control. From face on, the big keys you're going to look at are
284
00:14:06.620 --> 00:14:08.020
length of backswing
285
00:14:08.020 --> 00:14:11.750
compared to follow through. The height of the putter as it comes into the ball
286
00:14:11.750 --> 00:14:12.300
compared
287
00:14:12.300 --> 00:14:17.520
to after the ball. I want to see it higher in the follow through. The shoulder
288
00:14:17.520 --> 00:14:17.940
turn versus
289
00:14:17.940 --> 00:14:24.960
tilt, so whether the shoulders are turning this way. The arm extension or
290
00:14:24.960 --> 00:14:26.080
rotation or
291
00:14:26.080 --> 00:14:31.280
lack thereof, we want to see basically the arm consistency staying the same.
292
00:14:31.280 --> 00:14:31.540
Then we want
293
00:14:31.540 --> 00:14:35.860
to see the timing of when your eyes follow the golf ball or head rotation.
294
00:14:35.860 --> 00:14:42.360
Here's a dynamic look at the stroke that we've been looking at in this
295
00:14:42.360 --> 00:14:43.740
presentation.
296
00:14:43.740 --> 00:14:49.440
When I videotape a putting stroke, I'm going to scan through a couple big areas
297
00:14:49.440 --> 00:14:49.940
. We want
298
00:14:49.940 --> 00:14:55.640
to look at the arm structure. Looking at the arm bend, we can see maybe just
299
00:14:55.640 --> 00:14:56.260
the increase
300
00:14:56.260 --> 00:15:02.760
of that lean arm or moving that shoulder on the way through. We can look at the
301
00:15:02.760 --> 00:15:03.260
pivot
302
00:15:03.260 --> 00:15:06.850
location. Is most of the movement happening here in the shoulder girdle or is
303
00:15:06.850 --> 00:15:07.500
it happening
304
00:15:07.500 --> 00:15:11.320
more down in the lower body? Lower body looks pretty good here. We can look at
305
00:15:11.320 --> 00:15:11.940
the length
306
00:15:11.940 --> 00:15:20.240
of the stroke as well as the overall acceleration. I like the appearance that
307
00:15:20.240 --> 00:15:22.260
the putter is moving
308
00:15:22.260 --> 00:15:28.750
at a constant speed the whole time. There's no rapid acceleration or deceler
309
00:15:28.750 --> 00:15:29.580
ation. Then
310
00:15:29.580 --> 00:15:38.460
we can look at the face location. We can look at the club head to see if we
311
00:15:38.460 --> 00:15:38.860
break it down
312
00:15:38.860 --> 00:15:43.080
to the top of the swing. Is the putter really facing the camera or has there
313
00:15:43.080 --> 00:15:43.980
been minimal
314
00:15:43.980 --> 00:15:52.010
rotation? Then same thing in the follow through. Looking at a rough idea of if
315
00:15:52.010 --> 00:15:52.580
the face is
316
00:15:52.580 --> 00:15:57.810
rotating on the way through. We can also look at the height of the putter,
317
00:15:57.810 --> 00:15:58.300
making sure that
318
00:15:58.300 --> 00:16:04.040
the putter is slightly coming up through the stroke. Lastly, we can look at the
319
00:16:04.040 --> 00:16:04.460
timing
320
00:16:04.460 --> 00:16:09.690
of the head rotation. I like to see golfers finish their stroke before their
321
00:16:09.690 --> 00:16:10.300
eyes start
322
00:16:10.300 --> 00:16:14.680
to track the golf ball. In reality, if the eyes start tracking now as I'm
323
00:16:14.680 --> 00:16:15.500
hitting the
324
00:16:15.500 --> 00:16:19.290
golf ball, it's not going to be a big deal. But oftentimes they'll start
325
00:16:19.290 --> 00:16:20.460
tracking sooner,
326
00:16:20.460 --> 00:16:25.690
causing the shoulders to get open, which can cause either pulls or pushes
327
00:16:25.690 --> 00:16:26.220
depending on
328
00:16:26.220 --> 00:16:32.140
what the release style or the way that you're using your arms in the funny
329
00:16:32.140 --> 00:16:32.780
strip.
330
00:16:32.780 --> 00:16:40.110
From the down the line, we're looking primarily at more of a control element. I
331
00:16:40.110 --> 00:16:40.540
would probably
332
00:16:40.540 --> 00:16:44.470
look at lower body stability first, even with listed seconds. Hip rotation,
333
00:16:44.470 --> 00:16:45.420
knee rotation,
334
00:16:45.420 --> 00:16:50.290
making sure that from belly button down there's very little change between top
335
00:16:50.290 --> 00:16:51.180
of backswing and
336
00:16:51.180 --> 00:16:56.700
follow through. Looking at the shoulder plane or tilt versus turn, this is a
337
00:16:56.700 --> 00:16:57.580
great place to see
338
00:16:57.580 --> 00:17:02.810
if the shoulder is working down versus turning more level. Then looking at the
339
00:17:02.810 --> 00:17:03.660
control elements,
340
00:17:03.660 --> 00:17:10.150
looking at the swing path. The path and face, I should say. Looking at the down
341
00:17:10.150 --> 00:17:10.700
the line is the
342
00:17:10.700 --> 00:17:16.400
putter face going way open, as the path going outside in, too much inside. This
343
00:17:16.400 --> 00:17:17.180
gives you a lot
344
00:17:17.180 --> 00:17:23.680
of good diagnostic information to see what am I going to experiment with when I
345
00:17:23.680 --> 00:17:24.540
'm trying to
346
00:17:24.540 --> 00:17:29.410
fine-tune my drills or fine-tune my arm motions. If my lower body's stable and
347
00:17:29.410 --> 00:17:30.300
this is moving in
348
00:17:30.300 --> 00:17:35.690
a good path, then anything related to the putter face and the putter path are
349
00:17:35.690 --> 00:17:37.100
primarily coming down
350
00:17:37.100 --> 00:17:40.860
to arm overactivity or your arm movement pattern.
351
00:17:44.620 --> 00:17:49.780
Okay, so now if we're looking from the down the line, we're still going to kind
352
00:17:49.780 --> 00:17:50.700
of scan the overall
353
00:17:50.700 --> 00:17:55.050
putting stroke. We'll have a few fewer things to look at than say the face on
354
00:17:55.050 --> 00:17:56.940
view. First,
355
00:17:56.940 --> 00:18:01.640
I like to look at the pivot and the lower body stability, and I like to look at
356
00:18:01.640 --> 00:18:02.700
the torso angle
357
00:18:02.700 --> 00:18:07.180
or the angle that the shoulders are working. I want them working more down at
358
00:18:07.180 --> 00:18:07.820
the golf ball as
359
00:18:07.820 --> 00:18:12.980
opposed to the shoulder working horizontally across the screen. Then I'm going
360
00:18:12.980 --> 00:18:14.780
to look at the quality
361
00:18:14.780 --> 00:18:21.340
of the roll if I use the line and overall the general shape of the stroke. Is
362
00:18:21.340 --> 00:18:23.020
the putter coming
363
00:18:23.020 --> 00:18:29.920
well out and across? Is it coming too far in and out or in and in? It can often
364
00:18:29.920 --> 00:18:30.700
happen.
365
00:18:31.260 --> 00:18:36.700
It's better when it's more symmetric. I like to see a gentle stroke. In my mind
366
00:18:36.700 --> 00:18:38.220
, I'm imagining
367
00:18:38.220 --> 00:18:41.580
a vertical line and you can see that there's just a little bit of curve on the
368
00:18:41.580 --> 00:18:42.460
way in and then a
369
00:18:42.460 --> 00:18:47.290
little bit of curve on the way out. We can look at the putter face to see if it
370
00:18:47.290 --> 00:18:49.020
's twisting on the way
371
00:18:49.020 --> 00:18:55.980
through. You can see that it stays relatively square on this putt. Then lastly,
372
00:18:55.980 --> 00:18:57.260
looking at the
373
00:18:57.260 --> 00:19:01.660
height of the putter coming up as opposed to staying low to the ground too long
374
00:19:01.660 --> 00:19:02.460
in the follow-through.
375
00:19:02.460 --> 00:19:08.380
You can also look at the timing of when the eyes look, when the head rotates.
376
00:19:08.380 --> 00:19:09.420
That can be
377
00:19:09.420 --> 00:19:13.980
helpful, especially if you're missing a lot of your short putts. Let's briefly
378
00:19:13.980 --> 00:19:15.260
look at some pros.
379
00:19:15.260 --> 00:19:19.430
You've seen my swing, but these are the guys we really want to learn from. We
380
00:19:19.430 --> 00:19:20.060
'll look at some
381
00:19:20.060 --> 00:19:24.640
of my favorite strokes. We've got Luke Donald first. If you were just looking
382
00:19:24.640 --> 00:19:25.660
at one position,
383
00:19:25.660 --> 00:19:29.260
I think this is the most important to look at, but if you're comparing top of
384
00:19:29.260 --> 00:19:29.980
the swing and finish,
385
00:19:29.980 --> 00:19:35.130
you get a lot of information. You can look at the height of the putter, the
386
00:19:35.130 --> 00:19:36.460
amount of face rotation,
387
00:19:36.460 --> 00:19:41.100
and maintaining that arm triangle, all those classic positions. You can see
388
00:19:41.100 --> 00:19:41.980
very little knee
389
00:19:41.980 --> 00:19:46.180
rotation, very little wrist change, and just scanning across the pictures, you
390
00:19:46.180 --> 00:19:46.860
'll see most of
391
00:19:46.860 --> 00:19:52.380
the movement happening in this band of the body right there. Now, Jordan Smith,
392
00:19:52.380 --> 00:19:53.340
I included in here
393
00:19:53.340 --> 00:19:59.040
because he's got a little more of a forward press because of that left-hand low
394
00:19:59.040 --> 00:19:59.420
.
395
00:19:59.420 --> 00:20:05.920
His suspension point is more in line closer to the left shoulder instead of in
396
00:20:05.920 --> 00:20:06.540
the belly button,
397
00:20:06.540 --> 00:20:10.940
but if you look at where the shaft is pointing, it's pretty much pointing in
398
00:20:10.940 --> 00:20:12.220
the same position
399
00:20:12.220 --> 00:20:15.560
at all times. Remember, when most of you look at your putting stroke, you're
400
00:20:15.560 --> 00:20:16.300
going to tend to see
401
00:20:16.300 --> 00:20:21.020
either it pointing. You're not going to see those lines converge. You're going
402
00:20:21.020 --> 00:20:22.380
to see them pointing
403
00:20:22.380 --> 00:20:26.300
oftentimes in different positions, and that usually comes down to either the
404
00:20:26.300 --> 00:20:32.220
stableness of the pivot or the quality of the arm movements. So he still gets
405
00:20:32.220 --> 00:20:33.020
the putter rising,
406
00:20:33.020 --> 00:20:39.520
he still gets the kind of classic pizza shape, still has lower body stability,
407
00:20:39.520 --> 00:20:39.980
all those good
408
00:20:39.980 --> 00:20:43.520
things. He's just shifted a little bit forward because of the grip. Now, he has
409
00:20:43.520 --> 00:20:44.300
to potentially
410
00:20:44.300 --> 00:20:48.860
adjust loft and other things or ball position, but he's still got all the big
411
00:20:48.860 --> 00:20:50.060
pieces in play for
412
00:20:50.060 --> 00:20:58.620
being a really consistent putter. Now, we've got Steve Stricker, so another
413
00:20:58.620 --> 00:21:00.060
really good classic
414
00:21:00.060 --> 00:21:03.270
looking putting stroke. He actually, we'll see from the down the line, tends to
415
00:21:03.270 --> 00:21:03.820
stand a little
416
00:21:03.820 --> 00:21:09.050
bit taller. If you have any back issues that get really aggravated from getting
417
00:21:09.050 --> 00:21:10.620
into a 40-degree
418
00:21:10.620 --> 00:21:14.990
angle or a classic putting stroke, he's a good one to emulate where he's a
419
00:21:14.990 --> 00:21:16.220
little bit taller and
420
00:21:16.220 --> 00:21:22.710
has a little bit more exaggerated ulnar deviation, but still gets all the
421
00:21:22.710 --> 00:21:24.060
classic pieces. Love this
422
00:21:24.060 --> 00:21:30.560
follow through. Putter has good rise there. No change in the wrist angles. Very
423
00:21:30.560 --> 00:21:31.580
good for rolling
424
00:21:31.580 --> 00:21:37.940
the ball consistently. And then with Tiger here, you can scan the pictures, and
425
00:21:37.940 --> 00:21:38.620
you'll notice I
426
00:21:38.620 --> 00:21:42.850
included an extra one here where you can see how long he keeps his eyes down,
427
00:21:42.850 --> 00:21:44.060
especially when he's
428
00:21:45.020 --> 00:21:51.210
training or practicing. So the hat pretty much doesn't change through there,
429
00:21:51.210 --> 00:21:52.300
and then once
430
00:21:52.300 --> 00:21:55.340
he gets to about this point, then he looks to see where the putter is going.
431
00:21:55.340 --> 00:21:56.940
But that can train
432
00:21:56.940 --> 00:22:00.670
kind of the quiet eye. I think that's part of the reason that he's been so
433
00:22:00.670 --> 00:22:02.140
successful with pressure
434
00:22:02.140 --> 00:22:06.010
putts. If you have a tendency to look really quickly, that can creep into
435
00:22:06.010 --> 00:22:06.860
looking before
436
00:22:06.860 --> 00:22:10.420
you hit the ball, and that can often create some shoulder plane or arm
437
00:22:10.420 --> 00:22:11.660
extension issues.
438
00:22:13.660 --> 00:22:17.180
Okay, from the down the line, I think there are fewer things to look at, but
439
00:22:17.180 --> 00:22:18.140
looking at the amount
440
00:22:18.140 --> 00:22:23.270
of lower body rotation. And then this is a good place for looking at the angle
441
00:22:23.270 --> 00:22:24.060
of the shoulder
442
00:22:24.060 --> 00:22:30.920
turn versus tilt. So you can see here in the follow through, I have that frame
443
00:22:30.920 --> 00:22:31.260
out of order,
444
00:22:31.260 --> 00:22:36.490
but you can see here in the follow through there, the shoulder is working more
445
00:22:36.490 --> 00:22:38.140
down instead of around.
446
00:22:38.140 --> 00:22:41.930
A lot of you, when you see yourself on video, that shoulder is going to be
447
00:22:41.930 --> 00:22:42.940
working more out
448
00:22:42.940 --> 00:22:47.730
that way instead of down towards the golf ball, and that can be a big source of
449
00:22:47.730 --> 00:22:48.940
putter face control
450
00:22:48.940 --> 00:22:54.220
issues. You can also see just that classic setup where he gets in a really good
451
00:22:54.220 --> 00:22:55.340
position where the
452
00:22:55.340 --> 00:22:59.320
armpit elbow, knees, and middle defeat are kind of in line, and the putter
453
00:22:59.320 --> 00:23:00.380
shaft is in a really
454
00:23:00.380 --> 00:23:05.900
good angle. For a long time, when he was the number one player in the world, he
455
00:23:05.900 --> 00:23:06.700
was by far
456
00:23:06.700 --> 00:23:10.900
the best putter. So he's a good one to emulate. Here's Steve Sturker, who we
457
00:23:10.900 --> 00:23:12.140
talked about being
458
00:23:12.140 --> 00:23:17.510
a little bit taller, a little bit more wrist kind of set in more max ulnar
459
00:23:17.510 --> 00:23:18.780
deviation, which can help
460
00:23:18.780 --> 00:23:25.710
block out. He still gets, even though he has that ulnar deviation, he still
461
00:23:25.710 --> 00:23:27.100
gets really good
462
00:23:27.100 --> 00:23:31.240
tilt and the rise of the putter on the way through with very little face
463
00:23:31.240 --> 00:23:33.340
rotation. In fact, you can
464
00:23:33.340 --> 00:23:38.850
see the height of the putter there to there. He has quite what appears to be a
465
00:23:38.850 --> 00:23:41.020
significant rise angle,
466
00:23:41.020 --> 00:23:48.530
but overall, all the big pieces in play. Now, Tiger classically from the down
467
00:23:48.530 --> 00:23:49.340
the line
468
00:23:49.340 --> 00:23:53.180
doesn't have the shaft and the forearms in line, so that creates, he has a
469
00:23:53.180 --> 00:23:54.300
little bit more face
470
00:23:54.300 --> 00:24:00.790
rotation than the average pro. He's talked about when he puts well that he
471
00:24:00.790 --> 00:24:01.740
feels a release and he
472
00:24:01.740 --> 00:24:06.370
feels the putter, the toe of the putter kind of release. That's partly why,
473
00:24:06.370 --> 00:24:07.660
just because of that
474
00:24:07.660 --> 00:24:14.140
setup position. But again, this is right around the frame where his head starts
475
00:24:14.140 --> 00:24:14.700
to rotate and
476
00:24:14.700 --> 00:24:20.140
he starts to look at the golf ball. So training that quiet eye, I think that's
477
00:24:20.140 --> 00:24:20.780
one way to get
478
00:24:20.780 --> 00:24:25.250
more resilient under pressure. Okay, and then just being able to kind of see
479
00:24:25.250 --> 00:24:26.460
the swing in 3D,
480
00:24:26.460 --> 00:24:32.960
it's helpful to look at the start, the down the line as well as the face on
481
00:24:32.960 --> 00:24:34.460
kind of simultaneously.
482
00:24:34.460 --> 00:24:42.740
So you can see the the global changes. You'll see mostly shoulder movement, not
483
00:24:42.740 --> 00:24:43.340
a lot of arm
484
00:24:43.340 --> 00:24:47.180
change, but everything works a little bit up the plane. And then really on the
485
00:24:47.180 --> 00:24:47.820
follow through,
486
00:24:47.820 --> 00:24:51.820
I think this is one of the best positions to analyze when you're looking at the
487
00:24:51.820 --> 00:24:52.540
general theme
488
00:24:52.540 --> 00:24:58.240
of your stroke. Keeping the keeping the arm triangle while still getting more
489
00:24:58.240 --> 00:24:59.340
tilt to get that putter
490
00:24:59.340 --> 00:25:03.690
rising. I usually use that as kind of like the simple mantra for building your
491
00:25:03.690 --> 00:25:04.700
overall general
492
00:25:04.700 --> 00:25:11.900
stroke. So here we have Steve Stricker. You can scan through. He's doing the
493
00:25:11.900 --> 00:25:13.580
similar things.
494
00:25:13.580 --> 00:25:21.640
And we added the extra frame for tiger for when his head looks. But you can see
495
00:25:21.640 --> 00:25:22.700
how high on this
496
00:25:22.700 --> 00:25:27.930
length of a stroke the putter is in the follow through. That comes from having
497
00:25:27.930 --> 00:25:28.860
the more dominant
498
00:25:28.860 --> 00:25:34.300
engine happening here in the body. Kind of like that rather than if the putter
499
00:25:34.300 --> 00:25:35.100
stays really low,
500
00:25:35.100 --> 00:25:38.460
it's a good sign that you're getting some lengthening happening from those arms
501
00:25:38.460 --> 00:25:41.180
. So knowing what to
502
00:25:41.180 --> 00:25:45.870
look for and knowing how to analyze your putting stroke is one of the key steps
503
00:25:45.870 --> 00:25:46.860
for being able
504
00:25:46.860 --> 00:25:52.090
to become your own coach. So I recommend putting yourself on video and looking
505
00:25:52.090 --> 00:25:53.180
at it, compare it,
506
00:25:53.180 --> 00:25:58.400
and this will help shape which drills will be most applicable for you. In some
507
00:25:58.400 --> 00:25:58.940
subsequent videos,
508
00:25:58.940 --> 00:26:08.710
we will take a look at prioritizing your stroke based on start line or speed
509
00:26:08.710 --> 00:26:10.380
control.
