A simple guide for customizing your grip but keeping the key fundamentals
All good putting grips vary by style. Cross handed. The Claw. Classic Vardon Overlap. There are many options for grips that can work, so I think it's helpful to have a system for evaluating if a grip is good or not. I think the most important goal of a grip is to set up, and then control, the club face. We do this the easiest with opposing grip pressure points. Aim for at least 2 different sets of opposing pressure points as a starting point. Ideally, your whole grip will feel very secure during the entire stroke.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.320
This putting video is exploring the pressure points of your grip.
2
00:00:09.320 --> 00:00:14.860
So I get a lot of questions about grip and as it relates to putting and
3
00:00:14.860 --> 00:00:15.920
basically the
4
00:00:15.920 --> 00:00:18.000
most common phrase is, "How's my grip?
5
00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:19.000
Is this a good grip?"
6
00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:23.000
So I'm going to talk a little bit about how I approach assessing a grip and
7
00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:23.640
what I think
8
00:00:23.640 --> 00:00:25.600
the big goals are for the grip.
9
00:00:25.600 --> 00:00:29.480
So with the inputting, there are three general skills, reading a green, we're
10
00:00:29.480 --> 00:00:30.280
going to throw
11
00:00:30.280 --> 00:00:31.280
that out.
12
00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:34.170
Now we're talking about making a stroke, we're looking at controlling the ball
13
00:00:34.170 --> 00:00:35.200
start line,
14
00:00:35.200 --> 00:00:38.240
we're starting the ball online and controlling the speed.
15
00:00:38.240 --> 00:00:42.710
I think of the grip as one of the big influences for controlling the start line
16
00:00:42.710 --> 00:00:42.960
.
17
00:00:42.960 --> 00:00:47.690
So in order to control the start line, I want to control where this putter face
18
00:00:47.690 --> 00:00:48.720
is pointing.
19
00:00:48.720 --> 00:00:52.240
And so there's two main things that can influence it.
20
00:00:52.240 --> 00:00:56.850
One is the rotation of my wrist and forearms and then two is going to be the
21
00:00:56.850 --> 00:00:57.720
rotation of
22
00:00:57.720 --> 00:00:59.560
my shoulders.
23
00:00:59.560 --> 00:01:04.140
So I'm basically trying to take a grip where I'm going to minimize some of
24
00:01:04.140 --> 00:01:05.560
these rotations.
25
00:01:05.560 --> 00:01:10.620
In order to do that, I'll talk about equal and opposite pressure points.
26
00:01:10.620 --> 00:01:15.130
So with beginners, I typically have them take like a prayer position kind of
27
00:01:15.130 --> 00:01:16.040
like this and
28
00:01:16.040 --> 00:01:19.790
then point the thumbs away from them a little bit like that and apply even
29
00:01:19.790 --> 00:01:20.840
pressure through
30
00:01:20.840 --> 00:01:27.630
the whole hand, fingers, thumbs, palms, and then just rotate hopefully on
31
00:01:27.630 --> 00:01:28.120
planes so a
32
00:01:28.120 --> 00:01:32.740
little bit more of a rocking or vertical shoulder action, but just bringing the
33
00:01:32.740 --> 00:01:33.480
hands back and
34
00:01:33.480 --> 00:01:34.480
forth like this.
35
00:01:34.480 --> 00:01:37.600
And I'll ask them what do you feel in your arms and hands and usually they'll
36
00:01:37.600 --> 00:01:38.680
say nothing.
37
00:01:38.680 --> 00:01:42.580
And what I'll say is, okay, now when you do it, can you feel that there is even
38
00:01:42.580 --> 00:01:43.120
pressure
39
00:01:43.120 --> 00:01:44.360
between the hands?
40
00:01:44.360 --> 00:01:46.240
I'll say yes, okay.
41
00:01:46.240 --> 00:01:50.660
Now I pull out the yoga block to highlight one of the problems or challenges
42
00:01:50.660 --> 00:01:51.480
for golf.
43
00:01:51.480 --> 00:01:54.770
So it's easy to have the hands applying even pressure when the hands are
44
00:01:54.770 --> 00:01:55.840
matched like this,
45
00:01:55.840 --> 00:01:59.710
but we're typically going to be gripping the club in more fashion where the
46
00:01:59.710 --> 00:02:00.360
right hand
47
00:02:00.360 --> 00:02:05.100
is low or the left hand is low, but usually the hands are not dead symmetric on
48
00:02:05.100 --> 00:02:05.960
the putting
49
00:02:05.960 --> 00:02:06.960
grip.
50
00:02:06.960 --> 00:02:13.120
And so now I have to try to create that same synergy of pressure points.
51
00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:19.030
So essentially what I'm trying to do is I'm trying to create at least two
52
00:02:19.030 --> 00:02:20.240
different equal
53
00:02:20.240 --> 00:02:21.520
and opposing forces.
54
00:02:21.520 --> 00:02:24.840
So I'll show you how this works with the typical golf grip.
55
00:02:24.840 --> 00:02:28.970
So I've got these equal and opposing forces kind of like this, even though my
56
00:02:28.970 --> 00:02:29.560
hands are
57
00:02:29.560 --> 00:02:32.560
in an asymmetric position.
58
00:02:32.560 --> 00:02:38.390
So when I take my grip, the equal and opposite pressure points typically happen
59
00:02:38.390 --> 00:02:39.200
through the
60
00:02:39.200 --> 00:02:44.720
middle finger of the left hand going into the heel of the right hand.
61
00:02:44.720 --> 00:02:48.900
So this pressure point right there, and then the second one would be in the
62
00:02:48.900 --> 00:02:49.960
classic Varden
63
00:02:49.960 --> 00:02:54.050
or a reverse overlap, you're going to take the index finger of the left hand
64
00:02:54.050 --> 00:02:54.680
and place
65
00:02:54.680 --> 00:02:58.640
it up against either the ring finger or the middle finger, but basically
66
00:02:58.640 --> 00:02:59.600
against here.
67
00:02:59.600 --> 00:03:03.440
So I have pressure number one there, pressure number two there.
68
00:03:03.440 --> 00:03:08.640
If I take the rest of the fingers out, I can feel that I'm pushing a little bit
69
00:03:08.640 --> 00:03:09.280
this way
70
00:03:09.280 --> 00:03:11.540
just like I was pushing my palms that way.
71
00:03:11.540 --> 00:03:16.660
So I'm pushing a little bit like this, and then I'm simply rocking my shoulders
72
00:03:16.660 --> 00:03:17.600
on plane.
73
00:03:17.600 --> 00:03:20.720
This will help eliminate some of the face rotation.
74
00:03:20.720 --> 00:03:24.190
To test it, I'll usually come in, have a golfer take their grip and then try
75
00:03:24.190 --> 00:03:24.920
and rotate the
76
00:03:24.920 --> 00:03:29.600
face and we'll feel like where in your hands do you feel the gaps?
77
00:03:29.600 --> 00:03:32.680
Where do you feel like the putter wants the twist?
78
00:03:32.680 --> 00:03:36.970
So if you don't do it in the fashion I'm describing of this being the common
79
00:03:36.970 --> 00:03:37.680
one, this being the
80
00:03:37.680 --> 00:03:44.160
common two, I could have it where I have this hand opposing this hand.
81
00:03:44.160 --> 00:03:47.410
So there's a pressure point as long as I can make that nice and even, and then
82
00:03:47.410 --> 00:03:48.040
this hand
83
00:03:48.040 --> 00:03:52.160
opposing the opposite palm or the same palm kind of like this.
84
00:03:52.160 --> 00:03:57.300
There I would have my two pressure points as well, but it's a little bit harder
85
00:03:57.300 --> 00:03:58.440
to control
86
00:03:58.440 --> 00:04:03.980
it from twisting in that sense compared to if I have each hand resisting each
87
00:04:03.980 --> 00:04:04.640
other.
88
00:04:04.640 --> 00:04:10.340
So whether you take a reverse grip where I typically see this palm against this
89
00:04:10.340 --> 00:04:10.840
index
90
00:04:10.840 --> 00:04:17.140
finger and then usually the right hand fingers against palm that creates my
91
00:04:17.140 --> 00:04:18.400
four pressure
92
00:04:18.400 --> 00:04:24.620
points or if I do more of the paint brush where I have or the claw where I have
93
00:04:24.620 --> 00:04:25.240
these
94
00:04:25.240 --> 00:04:32.680
fingers opposing this palm and then this hand opposing this knuckle here.
95
00:04:32.680 --> 00:04:35.660
So those two are pretty close together or this knuckle opposing that knuckle I
96
00:04:35.660 --> 00:04:36.040
should
97
00:04:36.040 --> 00:04:37.720
have said.
98
00:04:37.720 --> 00:04:45.010
So those two knuckles opposing each other creates a nice couple whether it's
99
00:04:45.010 --> 00:04:45.960
the paint
100
00:04:45.960 --> 00:04:51.870
brush or the claw, okay that breaks a little bit or the classic one so there's
101
00:04:51.870 --> 00:04:52.720
pressure
102
00:04:52.720 --> 00:04:59.120
one there's pressure two and then I simply rock the shoulders more or less on
103
00:04:59.120 --> 00:05:00.040
plane.
104
00:05:00.040 --> 00:05:04.640
Oh just not enough speed this thing turns hard at the end.
105
00:05:04.640 --> 00:05:10.470
So pressure there no twist of the hands there I hit it a little firmer and it
106
00:05:10.470 --> 00:05:11.600
goes in.
107
00:05:11.600 --> 00:05:17.300
If I was to do the lead hand low I can experiment with finding a grip where I
108
00:05:17.300 --> 00:05:18.920
can feel no twisting
109
00:05:18.920 --> 00:05:24.450
and even pressure so that feels pretty good I've got kind of a steady pressure
110
00:05:24.450 --> 00:05:25.200
here against
111
00:05:25.200 --> 00:05:31.930
that palm and then I've got a little pressure here against the fingers of the
112
00:05:31.930 --> 00:05:33.080
right hand.
113
00:05:33.080 --> 00:05:36.960
So we've got that going.
114
00:05:36.960 --> 00:05:40.700
As long as I can develop a grip where I have equal pressure so that the putter
115
00:05:40.700 --> 00:05:41.240
doesn't
116
00:05:41.240 --> 00:05:44.910
twist I'm going to have good putter control and then it's a matter of
117
00:05:44.910 --> 00:05:46.160
developing a stroke
118
00:05:46.160 --> 00:05:51.300
where I use some of the bigger muscles on my shoulder in order to smoothly
119
00:05:51.300 --> 00:05:52.000
create a tempo
120
00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:55.530
and length of backswing that's how I'll control both putter face and distance
121
00:05:55.530 --> 00:05:56.040
and then it all
122
00:05:56.040 --> 00:05:57.720
comes down to reading greens.
123
00:05:57.720 --> 00:06:02.060
So hopefully this gives you a way to experiment at home with your grip find a
124
00:06:02.060 --> 00:06:02.880
really solid
125
00:06:02.880 --> 00:06:09.120
feeling pressure points and do little tweaks until you feel like you have 100%
126
00:06:09.120 --> 00:06:09.880
control
127
00:06:09.880 --> 00:06:13.560
of the putter face.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.320
This putting video is exploring the pressure points of your grip.
2
00:00:09.320 --> 00:00:14.860
So I get a lot of questions about grip and as it relates to putting and
3
00:00:14.860 --> 00:00:15.920
basically the
4
00:00:15.920 --> 00:00:18.000
most common phrase is, "How's my grip?
5
00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:19.000
Is this a good grip?"
6
00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:23.000
So I'm going to talk a little bit about how I approach assessing a grip and
7
00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:23.640
what I think
8
00:00:23.640 --> 00:00:25.600
the big goals are for the grip.
9
00:00:25.600 --> 00:00:29.480
So with the inputting, there are three general skills, reading a green, we're
10
00:00:29.480 --> 00:00:30.280
going to throw
11
00:00:30.280 --> 00:00:31.280
that out.
12
00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:34.170
Now we're talking about making a stroke, we're looking at controlling the ball
13
00:00:34.170 --> 00:00:35.200
start line,
14
00:00:35.200 --> 00:00:38.240
we're starting the ball online and controlling the speed.
15
00:00:38.240 --> 00:00:42.710
I think of the grip as one of the big influences for controlling the start line
16
00:00:42.710 --> 00:00:42.960
.
17
00:00:42.960 --> 00:00:47.690
So in order to control the start line, I want to control where this putter face
18
00:00:47.690 --> 00:00:48.720
is pointing.
19
00:00:48.720 --> 00:00:52.240
And so there's two main things that can influence it.
20
00:00:52.240 --> 00:00:56.850
One is the rotation of my wrist and forearms and then two is going to be the
21
00:00:56.850 --> 00:00:57.720
rotation of
22
00:00:57.720 --> 00:00:59.560
my shoulders.
23
00:00:59.560 --> 00:01:04.140
So I'm basically trying to take a grip where I'm going to minimize some of
24
00:01:04.140 --> 00:01:05.560
these rotations.
25
00:01:05.560 --> 00:01:10.620
In order to do that, I'll talk about equal and opposite pressure points.
26
00:01:10.620 --> 00:01:15.130
So with beginners, I typically have them take like a prayer position kind of
27
00:01:15.130 --> 00:01:16.040
like this and
28
00:01:16.040 --> 00:01:19.790
then point the thumbs away from them a little bit like that and apply even
29
00:01:19.790 --> 00:01:20.840
pressure through
30
00:01:20.840 --> 00:01:27.630
the whole hand, fingers, thumbs, palms, and then just rotate hopefully on
31
00:01:27.630 --> 00:01:28.120
planes so a
32
00:01:28.120 --> 00:01:32.740
little bit more of a rocking or vertical shoulder action, but just bringing the
33
00:01:32.740 --> 00:01:33.480
hands back and
34
00:01:33.480 --> 00:01:34.480
forth like this.
35
00:01:34.480 --> 00:01:37.600
And I'll ask them what do you feel in your arms and hands and usually they'll
36
00:01:37.600 --> 00:01:38.680
say nothing.
37
00:01:38.680 --> 00:01:42.580
And what I'll say is, okay, now when you do it, can you feel that there is even
38
00:01:42.580 --> 00:01:43.120
pressure
39
00:01:43.120 --> 00:01:44.360
between the hands?
40
00:01:44.360 --> 00:01:46.240
I'll say yes, okay.
41
00:01:46.240 --> 00:01:50.660
Now I pull out the yoga block to highlight one of the problems or challenges
42
00:01:50.660 --> 00:01:51.480
for golf.
43
00:01:51.480 --> 00:01:54.770
So it's easy to have the hands applying even pressure when the hands are
44
00:01:54.770 --> 00:01:55.840
matched like this,
45
00:01:55.840 --> 00:01:59.710
but we're typically going to be gripping the club in more fashion where the
46
00:01:59.710 --> 00:02:00.360
right hand
47
00:02:00.360 --> 00:02:05.100
is low or the left hand is low, but usually the hands are not dead symmetric on
48
00:02:05.100 --> 00:02:05.960
the putting
49
00:02:05.960 --> 00:02:06.960
grip.
50
00:02:06.960 --> 00:02:13.120
And so now I have to try to create that same synergy of pressure points.
51
00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:19.030
So essentially what I'm trying to do is I'm trying to create at least two
52
00:02:19.030 --> 00:02:20.240
different equal
53
00:02:20.240 --> 00:02:21.520
and opposing forces.
54
00:02:21.520 --> 00:02:24.840
So I'll show you how this works with the typical golf grip.
55
00:02:24.840 --> 00:02:28.970
So I've got these equal and opposing forces kind of like this, even though my
56
00:02:28.970 --> 00:02:29.560
hands are
57
00:02:29.560 --> 00:02:32.560
in an asymmetric position.
58
00:02:32.560 --> 00:02:38.390
So when I take my grip, the equal and opposite pressure points typically happen
59
00:02:38.390 --> 00:02:39.200
through the
60
00:02:39.200 --> 00:02:44.720
middle finger of the left hand going into the heel of the right hand.
61
00:02:44.720 --> 00:02:48.900
So this pressure point right there, and then the second one would be in the
62
00:02:48.900 --> 00:02:49.960
classic Varden
63
00:02:49.960 --> 00:02:54.050
or a reverse overlap, you're going to take the index finger of the left hand
64
00:02:54.050 --> 00:02:54.680
and place
65
00:02:54.680 --> 00:02:58.640
it up against either the ring finger or the middle finger, but basically
66
00:02:58.640 --> 00:02:59.600
against here.
67
00:02:59.600 --> 00:03:03.440
So I have pressure number one there, pressure number two there.
68
00:03:03.440 --> 00:03:08.640
If I take the rest of the fingers out, I can feel that I'm pushing a little bit
69
00:03:08.640 --> 00:03:09.280
this way
70
00:03:09.280 --> 00:03:11.540
just like I was pushing my palms that way.
71
00:03:11.540 --> 00:03:16.660
So I'm pushing a little bit like this, and then I'm simply rocking my shoulders
72
00:03:16.660 --> 00:03:17.600
on plane.
73
00:03:17.600 --> 00:03:20.720
This will help eliminate some of the face rotation.
74
00:03:20.720 --> 00:03:24.190
To test it, I'll usually come in, have a golfer take their grip and then try
75
00:03:24.190 --> 00:03:24.920
and rotate the
76
00:03:24.920 --> 00:03:29.600
face and we'll feel like where in your hands do you feel the gaps?
77
00:03:29.600 --> 00:03:32.680
Where do you feel like the putter wants the twist?
78
00:03:32.680 --> 00:03:36.970
So if you don't do it in the fashion I'm describing of this being the common
79
00:03:36.970 --> 00:03:37.680
one, this being the
80
00:03:37.680 --> 00:03:44.160
common two, I could have it where I have this hand opposing this hand.
81
00:03:44.160 --> 00:03:47.410
So there's a pressure point as long as I can make that nice and even, and then
82
00:03:47.410 --> 00:03:48.040
this hand
83
00:03:48.040 --> 00:03:52.160
opposing the opposite palm or the same palm kind of like this.
84
00:03:52.160 --> 00:03:57.300
There I would have my two pressure points as well, but it's a little bit harder
85
00:03:57.300 --> 00:03:58.440
to control
86
00:03:58.440 --> 00:04:03.980
it from twisting in that sense compared to if I have each hand resisting each
87
00:04:03.980 --> 00:04:04.640
other.
88
00:04:04.640 --> 00:04:10.340
So whether you take a reverse grip where I typically see this palm against this
89
00:04:10.340 --> 00:04:10.840
index
90
00:04:10.840 --> 00:04:17.140
finger and then usually the right hand fingers against palm that creates my
91
00:04:17.140 --> 00:04:18.400
four pressure
92
00:04:18.400 --> 00:04:24.620
points or if I do more of the paint brush where I have or the claw where I have
93
00:04:24.620 --> 00:04:25.240
these
94
00:04:25.240 --> 00:04:32.680
fingers opposing this palm and then this hand opposing this knuckle here.
95
00:04:32.680 --> 00:04:35.660
So those two are pretty close together or this knuckle opposing that knuckle I
96
00:04:35.660 --> 00:04:36.040
should
97
00:04:36.040 --> 00:04:37.720
have said.
98
00:04:37.720 --> 00:04:45.010
So those two knuckles opposing each other creates a nice couple whether it's
99
00:04:45.010 --> 00:04:45.960
the paint
100
00:04:45.960 --> 00:04:51.870
brush or the claw, okay that breaks a little bit or the classic one so there's
101
00:04:51.870 --> 00:04:52.720
pressure
102
00:04:52.720 --> 00:04:59.120
one there's pressure two and then I simply rock the shoulders more or less on
103
00:04:59.120 --> 00:05:00.040
plane.
104
00:05:00.040 --> 00:05:04.640
Oh just not enough speed this thing turns hard at the end.
105
00:05:04.640 --> 00:05:10.470
So pressure there no twist of the hands there I hit it a little firmer and it
106
00:05:10.470 --> 00:05:11.600
goes in.
107
00:05:11.600 --> 00:05:17.300
If I was to do the lead hand low I can experiment with finding a grip where I
108
00:05:17.300 --> 00:05:18.920
can feel no twisting
109
00:05:18.920 --> 00:05:24.450
and even pressure so that feels pretty good I've got kind of a steady pressure
110
00:05:24.450 --> 00:05:25.200
here against
111
00:05:25.200 --> 00:05:31.930
that palm and then I've got a little pressure here against the fingers of the
112
00:05:31.930 --> 00:05:33.080
right hand.
113
00:05:33.080 --> 00:05:36.960
So we've got that going.
114
00:05:36.960 --> 00:05:40.700
As long as I can develop a grip where I have equal pressure so that the putter
115
00:05:40.700 --> 00:05:41.240
doesn't
116
00:05:41.240 --> 00:05:44.910
twist I'm going to have good putter control and then it's a matter of
117
00:05:44.910 --> 00:05:46.160
developing a stroke
118
00:05:46.160 --> 00:05:51.300
where I use some of the bigger muscles on my shoulder in order to smoothly
119
00:05:51.300 --> 00:05:52.000
create a tempo
120
00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:55.530
and length of backswing that's how I'll control both putter face and distance
121
00:05:55.530 --> 00:05:56.040
and then it all
122
00:05:56.040 --> 00:05:57.720
comes down to reading greens.
123
00:05:57.720 --> 00:06:02.060
So hopefully this gives you a way to experiment at home with your grip find a
124
00:06:02.060 --> 00:06:02.880
really solid
125
00:06:02.880 --> 00:06:09.120
feeling pressure points and do little tweaks until you feel like you have 100%
126
00:06:09.120 --> 00:06:09.880
control
127
00:06:09.880 --> 00:06:13.560
of the putter face.
