Use string to help you train your putter face and start line control
There are a handful of classic drills that pros frequently use to dial in their start line control by better face control. The more common tools are putting mirrors, string, chalk lines. But some also use rulers, alignment sticks, or the Pelz Putting Tutor. All of these help a golfer recalibrate for what is straight.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:11.050
this video is using strings to visualize your breaking putts. So I find that
2
00:00:11.050 --> 00:00:11.160
this
3
00:00:11.160 --> 00:00:15.320
can be really helpful for golfers who are new to green reading. I have a couple
4
00:00:15.320 --> 00:00:19.360
different strings set up here and I'll kind of talk you through the station. So
5
00:00:19.360 --> 00:00:25.600
the first one here I have a straight uphill putt. So this is kind of
6
00:00:25.600 --> 00:00:32.600
calibrating me being able to roll the ball straight with the string. So we'll
7
00:00:32.600 --> 00:00:40.000
we've got the line underneath pretty close and then hopefully we can start
8
00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:45.720
that online and I pulled that just slightly. You better have my string. You
9
00:00:45.720 --> 00:00:52.680
better I didn't quite pick the vertical putt or the straight putt. So that
10
00:00:52.680 --> 00:00:52.920
started
11
00:00:52.920 --> 00:00:57.220
more with the string and that was going to go in if I hit it hard enough. Let's
12
00:00:57.220 --> 00:01:04.170
see if we can get it for a third putt of the day. So I often like to use a
13
00:01:04.170 --> 00:01:04.560
string
14
00:01:04.560 --> 00:01:10.320
to help calibrate my start line at the beginning of a practice session. So
15
00:01:10.320 --> 00:01:10.880
there
16
00:01:10.880 --> 00:01:16.370
we know that I'm rolling it pretty close to end over end with the string. Now I
17
00:01:16.370 --> 00:01:16.560
'm
18
00:01:16.560 --> 00:01:21.440
gonna apply that to some green reading. So I have a second string set up here
19
00:01:21.440 --> 00:01:28.360
where I read the putt and used some of the math to figure out where I want to
20
00:01:28.360 --> 00:01:37.080
aim it. So if I'm striking the putt from underneath the string this is about a
21
00:01:37.080 --> 00:01:46.000
18 foot putt and I've got the it's about a 3% slope and so I've got the the pin
22
00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:52.880
about 27 inches or the aim spot 27 inches or so up the hill. You can always
23
00:01:52.880 --> 00:01:58.680
review the using the math to pick your start line to help help you understand
24
00:01:58.680 --> 00:02:05.320
how I got to that spot. But then I've also got a point or a ball marker on the
25
00:02:05.320 --> 00:02:10.680
ground right here where I think the apex is going to be. So if I was to look
26
00:02:10.680 --> 00:02:16.310
from the down the line camera and draw a straight line from the golf ball to
27
00:02:16.310 --> 00:02:16.360
the
28
00:02:16.360 --> 00:02:22.280
hole the apex would be the highest point further away from that. So the ball is
29
00:02:22.280 --> 00:02:27.120
following kind of a curve more or less like this. This would be where the apex
30
00:02:27.120 --> 00:02:32.520
would be. But what you'll see is the apex is not the highest part. So a lot of
31
00:02:32.520 --> 00:02:38.150
golfers who are new to green reading will basically see the apex and then aim
32
00:02:38.150 --> 00:02:38.280
at
33
00:02:38.280 --> 00:02:44.240
the apex. So now you can see if I was to start this ball at the apex with
34
00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:44.520
pretty
35
00:02:44.520 --> 00:02:52.560
good speed then it's going to finish a good amount low of the hole. So what I
36
00:02:52.560 --> 00:02:59.680
need to make sure happens is that I'm going to hit this higher than the apex
37
00:02:59.680 --> 00:03:06.680
to start so that when it gets there so that was just slightly low of the apex
38
00:03:06.680 --> 00:03:12.680
and it missed on the on the left edge. So we'll see if we can get this to start
39
00:03:12.680 --> 00:03:19.640
even a little bit higher. So that was a little bit better start line or a
40
00:03:19.640 --> 00:03:19.820
little
41
00:03:19.820 --> 00:03:28.040
bit firmer. Just missed that same apex. Potentially I'm pulling it or I've got
42
00:03:28.040 --> 00:03:28.880
to
43
00:03:28.880 --> 00:03:35.000
work a little work to do on my string. Let's see. So I'll visualize with the
44
00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:39.880
string one more time. That started a little bit better. That rolled over the
45
00:03:39.880 --> 00:03:43.660
apex and went in the center. So the first two were just a little bit
46
00:03:43.660 --> 00:03:49.150
poles. It kind of felt my my right side get a little bit early. But this
47
00:03:49.150 --> 00:03:49.520
station
48
00:03:49.520 --> 00:03:54.560
I'll use something like this when I'm working on green reading with newer
49
00:03:54.560 --> 00:03:59.000
golfers. Basically we'll give you two or three putts at each putt but each one
50
00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:03.960
you have to read it and then put the string exactly where you want the ball
51
00:04:03.960 --> 00:04:09.280
to roll. I find that a lot of golfers kind of they start adjusting their
52
00:04:09.280 --> 00:04:14.480
stroke to try to change where the ball is going to roll rather than simply
53
00:04:14.480 --> 00:04:19.120
choosing a different start line and committing to that start line and then
54
00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:23.320
making the same stroke. If you're trying to direct control start line based on
55
00:04:23.320 --> 00:04:28.640
changing your stroke then you're going to really struggle with consistency of
56
00:04:28.640 --> 00:04:34.000
start line and that change usually affects your speed as well. So I love
57
00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:39.000
using strings to help get me and the student fully committed to where we want
58
00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:44.000
it to start and then the apex can help you visualize the putt. You can either
59
00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:48.000
use a ball mark that you want to roll over or you can use a tee that you put
60
00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:52.640
just below the apex that you have to make sure you go above. So if you're
61
00:04:52.640 --> 00:04:56.040
working on your green reading calibrate your face control with the straight up
62
00:04:56.040 --> 00:05:01.360
hill putt read the greens committing to a spot up on the high side and then
63
00:05:01.360 --> 00:05:05.000
practice rolling that same stroke that you were doing on the breaking or on the
64
00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:08.400
straight putt but using the breaking putt. You follow that sequence it will
65
00:05:08.400 --> 00:05:13.800
really help you be able to visualize and take your putting stroke to breaking
66
00:05:13.800 --> 00:05:16.800
putts on the course.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:11.050
this video is using strings to visualize your breaking putts. So I find that
2
00:00:11.050 --> 00:00:11.160
this

00:00:11.160 --> 00:00:15.320

to help calibrate my start line at the beginning of a practice session. So
15
00:01:10.320 --> 00:01:10.880
there
16
00:01:10.880 --> 00:01:16.370
