A great "reference" point for golfers who struggle with distance control on the green.

A lot of my students who struggle with lag putting are simply not taking a long enough backswing; this leads to an over exaggeration of the acceleration in the forward stroke, which is hard to repeat and manage. Ultimately, to get a better understanding of the tempo & "feel"  necessary for good lag putting, I will have students hit a putt as far as they possible can. However, the key here is that they must maintain good form. That is, we do not want any excess movement or added power from the wrists/forearms or lower-body. When done correctly, this drill provides an excellent "reference point" for players to use for dialing in their longer putts and with practice, should help eliminate any unnecessary three-putts.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.080
This drill is full swing with the putter so no we're not working on the full

2
00:00:05.080 --> 00:00:10.240
swing we're actually still working on the putting but I find that a lot of

3
00:00:10.240 --> 00:00:14.120
golfers who struggle with distance control with their longer putts it's

4
00:00:14.120 --> 00:00:18.600
because they're they're taking they're not taking a long enough stroke and so

5
00:00:18.600 --> 00:00:22.480
there's two different versions that I'll give people for for doing this but

6
00:00:22.480 --> 00:00:22.600
this

7
00:00:22.600 --> 00:00:27.080
is basically freeing up your brain into what's the furthest I could hit it so

8
00:00:27.080 --> 00:00:31.120
you can see the large putting green that I have down below I'll usually do

9
00:00:31.120 --> 00:00:35.360
this from one end or I'll do this back up this big hill because I think you

10
00:00:35.360 --> 00:00:39.120
should at least be able to hit it a hundred feet or so if you're taking a

11
00:00:39.120 --> 00:00:43.280
full swing with your putter with good form and that's the part that I stress

12
00:00:43.280 --> 00:00:49.640
so good form means I'm not going to overuse my wrist and arms and I'm not

13
00:00:49.640 --> 00:00:55.480
gonna overuse my legs but I can overuse my shoulders and create a bigger stroke

14
00:00:55.480 --> 00:00:55.760
I

15
00:00:55.760 --> 00:01:01.280
just have to keep my lower body and my wrists out of this power source but I

16
00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:06.080
find that a lot of golfers have no idea how far they could hit a putt so then

17
00:01:06.080 --> 00:01:09.560
it's always a little bit of a guessing game game for the brain to figure out

18
00:01:09.560 --> 00:01:14.240
what percentage of their full shot would they want to do on any particular putt

19
00:01:14.240 --> 00:01:18.760
I think of it like if I if I only hit half wedges and I didn't know how far I

20
00:01:18.760 --> 00:01:24.920
could hit my you know my 56 degree wedge then knowing that well if I hit my

21
00:01:24.920 --> 00:01:29.360
56 degree of wedge a hundred yards well about a half swing is about here and I

22
00:01:29.360 --> 00:01:33.400
tend to hit that you know somewhere 60/70 like it it helps my brain figure out

23
00:01:33.400 --> 00:01:37.480
the math of how big of a swing to take so you're gonna make sure that nobody's

24
00:01:37.480 --> 00:01:41.800
in your way and you're gonna find a large section of the green and then you're

25
00:01:41.800 --> 00:01:49.440
going to practice taking full strokes and just kind of eyeballing about how

26
00:01:49.440 --> 00:01:53.600
far you're able to hit that I had a little bit extra lower body on that one

27
00:01:53.600 --> 00:02:03.560
but overall not too bad and you will see that these will end up you know

28
00:02:03.560 --> 00:02:10.080
close-ish to each other and then what I'm going to do now that I my brain has a

29
00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:15.760
little bit of a baseline is I'm gonna try and do not a full swing but I'm gonna

30
00:02:15.760 --> 00:02:19.920
bring it back maybe a three-quarter swing so how far does my three-quarter

31
00:02:19.920 --> 00:02:25.120
putting stroke and that might be my comfortable length swing maybe when I'm

32
00:02:25.120 --> 00:02:28.880
doing the full swing it's a little bit outside of my comfort zone but still

33
00:02:28.880 --> 00:02:32.760
this information helps me figure out about how big of a stroke I can

34
00:02:32.760 --> 00:02:36.480
comfortably make this will especially help if you play on big greens where you

35
00:02:36.480 --> 00:02:42.720
have a lot of 60/70/80 footers like the greens I grew up playing so this the

36
00:02:42.720 --> 00:02:47.160
first version is just kind of doing it willy-nilly hitting it as as hard or

37
00:02:47.160 --> 00:02:52.390
comfortable as you can the second version is where I work tempo into it and

38
00:02:52.390 --> 00:02:52.440
this

39
00:02:52.440 --> 00:02:55.400
is a little bit more of a challenge but what I want you to do is hit it as far

40
00:02:55.400 --> 00:03:00.240
as you can with a short a follow through as you can so now I have to really get

41
00:03:00.240 --> 00:03:04.040
this feeling of kind of the putter dropping but I'm gonna feel like there's

42
00:03:04.040 --> 00:03:12.640
almost a hard stop when the ball hits or when the club hits the ball so now I'm

43
00:03:12.640 --> 00:03:22.040
gonna do a long backswing to a short follow-through and the goal is I'm gonna

44
00:03:22.040 --> 00:03:27.800
try and hit this putt as far as I can with as short with as long a backswing

45
00:03:27.800 --> 00:03:35.680
and as short a follow-through as I can not my best stroke will do one more just

46
00:03:35.680 --> 00:03:43.120
for my sake then you can take this phase of the drill that's pretty good you

47
00:03:43.120 --> 00:03:43.240
can

48
00:03:43.240 --> 00:03:47.260
take this phase of the drill and you can apply it to hitting putts on your

49
00:03:47.260 --> 00:03:47.520
green

50
00:03:47.520 --> 00:03:51.280
which would basically be I want you to take as long a putting stroke with a

51
00:03:51.280 --> 00:03:55.520
short a follow through as you can and try to get it to roll an appropriate

52
00:03:55.520 --> 00:04:01.960
distance this is a while controlling a guide it like while swinging it but

53
00:04:01.960 --> 00:04:06.940
also being prepared to stop it you're decelerating it just slightly which

54
00:04:06.940 --> 00:04:10.720
allows you to have a little bit elevation in your touch it's really

55
00:04:10.720 --> 00:04:14.120
hard to have touch if you're over accelerating which is why one of my pet

56
00:04:14.120 --> 00:04:17.800
peeves for people who struggle with distance control is really applying a

57
00:04:17.800 --> 00:04:24.000
rapid and especially late acceleration I think of it as if I was tossing

58
00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:27.880
something underhand it's reaching its maximum acceleration right about there

59
00:04:27.880 --> 00:04:32.560
and then it's just kind of coasting into the release it would be really hard

60
00:04:32.560 --> 00:04:32.780
for

61
00:04:32.780 --> 00:04:38.800
me to have distance control if I was speeding it up right to the end so this

62
00:04:38.800 --> 00:04:43.640
drill of or this kind of experiment of how big of a swing can I take helps you

63
00:04:43.640 --> 00:04:47.160
feel the weight of the club swinging which is going to ultimately help you

64
00:04:47.160 --> 00:04:51.200
improve your ability to develop touch
