A common helpful description is that the finesse wedge shot is more like an underhand toss than an overhead throw
Having the upper and lower body work toward the target during the backswing is one of the most critical components to building a solid finesse wedge technique. This drill will help with the timing and tempo of how long the upper body should drift toward the target.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:06.000
This finesse wedge drill is underhand toss tempo. So this is a great drill for
2
00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:11.240
kind of helping put together some of the feelings of the upper body going
3
00:00:11.240 --> 00:00:17.760
forward and the arms kind of falling into your actual practice routine. So what
4
00:00:17.760 --> 00:00:22.440
we're gonna do is we're gonna use an underhand toss to get the tempo of how
5
00:00:22.440 --> 00:00:26.360
much my upper body should be moving forward during the backswing. So if I
6
00:00:26.360 --> 00:00:29.780
was to throw an underhand toss here into the net, basically what you'll see is
7
00:00:29.780 --> 00:00:34.680
I'm all the way back in my right heel, I'm gonna go forward and my arms gonna
8
00:00:34.680 --> 00:00:40.750
kind of swing from my shoulder. So I'll do it again. And what I feel is my
9
00:00:40.750 --> 00:00:41.080
upper
10
00:00:41.080 --> 00:00:46.120
body, I feel it moving forward towards the target, now, now, now, now, and it
11
00:00:46.120 --> 00:00:53.240
stopped right about here. So this gives me a feeling of this tempo of my upper
12
00:00:53.240 --> 00:00:57.640
body kind of going forward. So what I will do now is I'm gonna try and hit a
13
00:00:57.640 --> 00:00:57.880
few
14
00:00:57.880 --> 00:01:01.760
wedge shots where my upper body goes forward, forward, forward, forward,
15
00:01:01.760 --> 00:01:09.880
forward, stop. And it should be roughly the same as what I was
16
00:01:09.880 --> 00:01:15.160
feeling here with this underhand toss. So it's a great way for you to kind of
17
00:01:15.160 --> 00:01:19.120
take a step back from some of the mechanics and start working on the
18
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:22.670
overall tempo which helps you with your sequencing. So I'll try to demonstrate
19
00:01:22.670 --> 00:01:22.740
a
20
00:01:22.740 --> 00:01:29.180
couple hitting them into the net. So it would look kind of something like this
21
00:01:29.180 --> 00:01:33.960
forward, forward, forward, forward, stop. And you'll hear that good kind of
22
00:01:33.960 --> 00:01:39.880
contact even if everything isn't really perfect. And just to demonstrate, here
23
00:01:39.880 --> 00:01:39.920
's
24
00:01:39.920 --> 00:01:44.060
what I would not want to see. For my particular, I would go forward, forward
25
00:01:44.060 --> 00:01:50.520
back. I got lucky with that flip but anytime you go back you're gonna get too
26
00:01:50.520 --> 00:01:55.300
shallow and it's gonna affect the path and make your consistency of contact
27
00:01:55.300 --> 00:02:01.000
really, really tricky. So you can use this feeling of the underhand toss and I
28
00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:01.540
've
29
00:02:01.540 --> 00:02:05.040
used it with players as part of their pre-shot routines. If they have a hard
30
00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:10.980
time feeling the upper body going forward in the backswing, like so, I've used
31
00:02:10.980 --> 00:02:11.220
this
32
00:02:11.220 --> 00:02:15.940
as part of their visualization before they actually do the shot. So they'll go
33
00:02:15.940 --> 00:02:20.940
like that and then they'll set up and they'll try to recreate that same
34
00:02:20.940 --> 00:02:25.340
amount of the upper body going forward. So I hope this helps you with your
35
00:02:25.340 --> 00:02:26.260
tempo
36
00:02:26.260 --> 00:02:30.000
of how you're gonna apply this shot into your or how you're gonna apply this
37
00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:33.960
movement into your finesse wedge swing.
