Learn how to use your hands to change trajectory rather than changing the setup
Changing setup is one of the easiest ways to control trajectory, but some golfers, like Stan Utley discuss how to change the trajectory with the stroke by changing the wrist angles and face angles. To hit it lower, you can add a little more face-closing elements by the motorcycle, in the backswing. To hit it higher, you can add a little more face-opening elements by extending the lead wrist in the backswing.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.040
In this content video, we're going to discuss ways to adjust the stroke to
2
00:00:09.040 --> 00:00:10.840
adjust the trajectory.
3
00:00:10.840 --> 00:00:14.460
So I find that this is a little bit more advanced than just doing the setup
4
00:00:14.460 --> 00:00:15.160
changes.
5
00:00:15.160 --> 00:00:21.040
Again, the setup changes, if I want to go low, I'm going to bring the ball back
6
00:00:21.040 --> 00:00:21.280
and I'm
7
00:00:21.280 --> 00:00:22.880
going to stand a little closer to it.
8
00:00:22.880 --> 00:00:27.290
So that's typically going to raise the handle and I might stand a little bit
9
00:00:27.290 --> 00:00:28.080
taller and
10
00:00:28.080 --> 00:00:31.800
I'm going to be hitting more kind of straight down on it just like that.
11
00:00:31.800 --> 00:00:36.310
I'm typically going to get more of a leading edge hit, but because the heel is
12
00:00:36.310 --> 00:00:36.840
off the
13
00:00:36.840 --> 00:00:39.440
ground, oftentimes it won't dig.
14
00:00:39.440 --> 00:00:44.930
If I'm trying to hit it higher, I'm going to move further away, ball position
15
00:00:44.930 --> 00:00:45.400
further
16
00:00:45.400 --> 00:00:47.080
forward, and lower the handle.
17
00:00:47.080 --> 00:00:51.300
Oftentimes in order to lower the handle, I'm going to get a little bit lower
18
00:00:51.300 --> 00:00:52.360
because I'm
19
00:00:52.360 --> 00:00:58.300
not further away, this is going to encourage the club swinging a little bit
20
00:00:58.300 --> 00:00:59.400
more flat or
21
00:00:59.400 --> 00:01:03.920
around and the club is going to come through kind of like that, presenting a
22
00:01:03.920 --> 00:01:04.880
lot of loft.
23
00:01:04.880 --> 00:01:10.740
Well, there are options if I want to get a little bit more fancy in terms of
24
00:01:10.740 --> 00:01:11.560
being able
25
00:01:11.560 --> 00:01:14.080
to control the trajectory with my stroke.
26
00:01:14.080 --> 00:01:17.940
So someone like Stan Utley talks about if you want to hit it low, he does that
27
00:01:17.940 --> 00:01:18.400
mostly
28
00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:20.520
by regulating the club face.
29
00:01:20.520 --> 00:01:24.520
So he'll play a lot of the shots more in the middle of the stance, and if he
30
00:01:24.520 --> 00:01:25.240
wants to hit
31
00:01:25.240 --> 00:01:29.740
it low, he will tend to bring the club back a little bit more closed, kind of
32
00:01:29.740 --> 00:01:30.480
like so.
33
00:01:30.480 --> 00:01:34.980
And then by closing it, a little bit more of this motorcycle movement, that
34
00:01:34.980 --> 00:01:35.720
allows him
35
00:01:35.720 --> 00:01:41.420
to get more shaft lean, which lowers the flight as well as decreases some of
36
00:01:41.420 --> 00:01:42.400
the spin.
37
00:01:42.400 --> 00:01:48.600
So if we just looked at a normal shot, kind of having a trajectory and a
38
00:01:48.600 --> 00:01:49.920
release like
39
00:01:49.920 --> 00:01:57.920
that, if I now focus on closing the face, that's going to come out a little bit
40
00:01:57.920 --> 00:01:58.640
lower
41
00:01:58.640 --> 00:02:03.840
and have a lot more roll, it's going to feel like it comes out hotter.
42
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:09.730
Second option would be if I'm trying to increase my launcher trajectory, then I
43
00:02:09.730 --> 00:02:10.560
'm going to
44
00:02:10.560 --> 00:02:13.510
do the opposite and I'm going to feel almost like a bunker shot where I'm going
45
00:02:13.510 --> 00:02:13.840
to cup
46
00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:16.440
the wrist a little bit more in the back stroke.
47
00:02:16.440 --> 00:02:21.170
Now, that typically is going to, that's going to open the face and so I'm going
48
00:02:21.170 --> 00:02:21.800
to feel
49
00:02:21.800 --> 00:02:25.960
like I have to release it a little bit more with my hands.
50
00:02:25.960 --> 00:02:30.250
I want to be careful that I'm not getting a lot of arm or shoulder disconnect,
51
00:02:30.250 --> 00:02:30.960
but rather
52
00:02:30.960 --> 00:02:36.960
I'm just releasing the wrist and letting the club pass a little bit sooner.
53
00:02:36.960 --> 00:02:41.340
Now I still like, even if you're releasing it, I still like getting into a good
54
00:02:41.340 --> 00:02:41.840
follow
55
00:02:41.840 --> 00:02:47.750
through position where it's more in front of you, but if I did it this way, the
56
00:02:47.750 --> 00:02:48.320
wrist
57
00:02:48.320 --> 00:02:52.730
is going to be a lot more cupped if we said compared to say my standard where
58
00:02:52.730 --> 00:02:53.400
the club
59
00:02:53.400 --> 00:02:57.430
is just going to be matching the spine angle, it's going to be coming back more
60
00:02:57.430 --> 00:02:58.120
like a bunker
61
00:02:58.120 --> 00:03:03.680
shot where the club face is going to stay pointing the sky a little bit more.
62
00:03:03.680 --> 00:03:11.690
So if I'm going a little bit higher, I can open the face, release it, it will
63
00:03:11.690 --> 00:03:13.000
land softer
64
00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:16.000
but have a higher launch and higher trajectory.
65
00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:21.870
So some people like to, like I mentioned, people like Stanley like to keep more
66
00:03:21.870 --> 00:03:22.400
of the
67
00:03:22.400 --> 00:03:26.670
setup the same, kind of the stroke the same and just feel a little bit more
68
00:03:26.670 --> 00:03:27.400
kind of play
69
00:03:27.400 --> 00:03:30.240
with the hands and the club face.
70
00:03:30.240 --> 00:03:34.160
I think this is a more advanced way of doing it, but I also think that if you
71
00:03:34.160 --> 00:03:34.920
develop those
72
00:03:34.920 --> 00:03:37.760
skills, it gives you more options.
73
00:03:37.760 --> 00:03:43.250
For example, I might be in a situation with a funky lie where I have to, it's
74
00:03:43.250 --> 00:03:44.120
encouraging
75
00:03:44.120 --> 00:03:51.250
me to go a little bit higher and if I wanted to maximize things, I can actually
76
00:03:51.250 --> 00:03:51.840
use my
77
00:03:51.840 --> 00:03:58.400
high setup and cup the wrist a little bit and now I get kind of my maximum spin
78
00:03:58.400 --> 00:03:59.240
landing
79
00:03:59.240 --> 00:04:05.620
super soft or if I wanted to really get this thing running, say I had to keep
80
00:04:05.620 --> 00:04:06.760
it underneath
81
00:04:06.760 --> 00:04:11.140
a branch or something, I could play it low, but I could also incorporate
82
00:04:11.140 --> 00:04:12.720
closing the face
83
00:04:12.720 --> 00:04:18.590
and just really taking some of the spin off and getting it low and almost hook
84
00:04:18.590 --> 00:04:19.200
ing it to
85
00:04:19.200 --> 00:04:20.840
get it to run out a bit more.
86
00:04:20.840 --> 00:04:25.180
So the simple way is to play with the setup, the more advanced way is to play
87
00:04:25.180 --> 00:04:25.960
around with
88
00:04:25.960 --> 00:04:32.320
some of these wrist angles, you will naturally change some of your stroke.
89
00:04:32.320 --> 00:04:36.450
So oftentimes, if you're trying to go higher, you will swing a little bit fl
90
00:04:36.450 --> 00:04:37.200
atter and if
91
00:04:37.200 --> 00:04:41.450
you're trying to go lower, you will swing a little bit steeper, but it's the
92
00:04:41.450 --> 00:04:42.120
club face
93
00:04:42.120 --> 00:04:46.680
angle and the shaft lean impact that have the biggest impact on our trajectory
94
00:04:46.680 --> 00:04:47.080
and you
95
00:04:47.080 --> 00:04:53.680
can affect that a lot with your wrist angles in addition to your setup.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.040
In this content video, we're going to discuss ways to adjust the stroke to
2
00:00:09.040 --> 00:00:10.840
adjust the trajectory.
3
00:00:10.840 --> 00:00:14.460
So I find that this is a little bit more advanced than just doing the setup
4
00:00:14.460 --> 00:00:15.160
changes.
5
00:00:15.160 --> 00:00:21.040
Again, the setup changes, if I want to go low, I'm going to bring the ball back
6
00:00:21.040 --> 00:00:21.280
and I'm
7
00:00:21.280 --> 00:00:22.880
going to stand a little closer to it.
8
00:00:22.880 --> 00:00:27.290
So that's typically going to raise the handle and I might stand a little bit
9
00:00:27.290 --> 00:00:28.080
taller and
10
00:00:28.080 --> 00:00:31.800
I'm going to be hitting more kind of straight down on it just like that.
11
00:00:31.800 --> 00:00:36.310
I'm typically going to get more of a leading edge hit, but because the heel is
12
00:00:36.310 --> 00:00:36.840
off the
13
00:00:36.840 --> 00:00:39.440
ground, oftentimes it won't dig.
14
00:00:39.440 --> 00:00:44.930
If I'm trying to hit it higher, I'm going to move further away, ball position
15
00:00:44.930 --> 00:00:45.400
further
16
00:00:45.400 --> 00:00:47.080
forward, and lower the handle.
17
00:00:47.080 --> 00:00:51.300
Oftentimes in order to lower the handle, I'm going to get a little bit lower
18
00:00:51.300 --> 00:00:52.360
because I'm
19
00:00:52.360 --> 00:00:58.300
not further away, this is going to encourage the club swinging a little bit
20
00:00:58.300 --> 00:00:59.400
more flat or
21
00:00:59.400 --> 00:01:03.920
around and the club is going to come through kind of like that, presenting a
22
00:01:03.920 --> 00:01:04.880
lot of loft.
23
00:01:04.880 --> 00:01:10.740
Well, there are options if I want to get a little bit more fancy in terms of
24
00:01:10.740 --> 00:01:11.560
being able
25
00:01:11.560 --> 00:01:14.080
to control the trajectory with my stroke.
26
00:01:14.080 --> 00:01:17.940
So someone like Stan Utley talks about if you want to hit it low, he does that
27
00:01:17.940 --> 00:01:18.400
mostly
28
00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:20.520
by regulating the club face.
29
00:01:20.520 --> 00:01:24.520
So he'll play a lot of the shots more in the middle of the stance, and if he
30
00:01:24.520 --> 00:01:25.240
wants to hit
31
00:01:25.240 --> 00:01:29.740
it low, he will tend to bring the club back a little bit more closed, kind of
32
00:01:29.740 --> 00:01:30.480
like so.
33
00:01:30.480 --> 00:01:34.980
And then by closing it, a little bit more of this motorcycle movement, that
34
00:01:34.980 --> 00:01:35.720
allows him
35
00:01:35.720 --> 00:01:41.420
to get more shaft lean, which lowers the flight as well as decreases some of
36
00:01:41.420 --> 00:01:42.400
the spin.
37
00:01:42.400 --> 00:01:48.600
So if we just looked at a normal shot, kind of having a trajectory and a
38
00:01:48.600 --> 00:01:49.920
release like
39
00:01:49.920 --> 00:01:57.920
that, if I now focus on closing the face, that's going to come out a little bit
40
00:01:57.920 --> 00:01:58.640
lower
41
00:01:58.640 --> 00:02:03.840
and have a lot more roll, it's going to feel like it comes out hotter.
42
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:09.730
Second option would be if I'm trying to increase my launcher trajectory, then I
43
00:02:09.730 --> 00:02:10.560
'm going to
44
00:02:10.560 --> 00:02:13.510
do the opposite and I'm going to feel almost like a bunker shot where I'm going
45
00:02:13.510 --> 00:02:13.840
to cup
46
00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:16.440
the wrist a little bit more in the back stroke.
47
00:02:16.440 --> 00:02:21.170
Now, that typically is going to, that's going to open the face and so I'm going
48
00:02:21.170 --> 00:02:21.800
to feel
49
00:02:21.800 --> 00:02:25.960
like I have to release it a little bit more with my hands.
50
00:02:25.960 --> 00:02:30.250
I want to be careful that I'm not getting a lot of arm or shoulder disconnect,
51
00:02:30.250 --> 00:02:30.960
but rather
52
00:02:30.960 --> 00:02:36.960
I'm just releasing the wrist and letting the club pass a little bit sooner.
53
00:02:36.960 --> 00:02:41.340
Now I still like, even if you're releasing it, I still like getting into a good
54
00:02:41.340 --> 00:02:41.840
follow
55
00:02:41.840 --> 00:02:47.750
through position where it's more in front of you, but if I did it this way, the
56
00:02:47.750 --> 00:02:48.320
wrist
57
00:02:48.320 --> 00:02:52.730
is going to be a lot more cupped if we said compared to say my standard where
58
00:02:52.730 --> 00:02:53.400
the club
59
00:02:53.400 --> 00:02:57.430
is just going to be matching the spine angle, it's going to be coming back more
60
00:02:57.430 --> 00:02:58.120
like a bunker
61
00:02:58.120 --> 00:03:03.680
shot where the club face is going to stay pointing the sky a little bit more.
62
00:03:03.680 --> 00:03:11.690
So if I'm going a little bit higher, I can open the face, release it, it will
63
00:03:11.690 --> 00:03:13.000
land softer
64
00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:16.000
but have a higher launch and higher trajectory.
65
00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:21.870
So some people like to, like I mentioned, people like Stanley like to keep more
66
00:03:21.870 --> 00:03:22.400
of the
67
00:03:22.400 --> 00:03:26.670
setup the same, kind of the stroke the same and just feel a little bit more
68
00:03:26.670 --> 00:03:27.400
kind of play
69
00:03:27.400 --> 00:03:30.240
with the hands and the club face.
70
00:03:30.240 --> 00:03:34.160
I think this is a more advanced way of doing it, but I also think that if you
71
00:03:34.160 --> 00:03:34.920
develop those
72
00:03:34.920 --> 00:03:37.760
skills, it gives you more options.
73
00:03:37.760 --> 00:03:43.250
For example, I might be in a situation with a funky lie where I have to, it's
74
00:03:43.250 --> 00:03:44.120
encouraging
75
00:03:44.120 --> 00:03:51.250
me to go a little bit higher and if I wanted to maximize things, I can actually
76
00:03:51.250 --> 00:03:51.840
use my
77
00:03:51.840 --> 00:03:58.400
high setup and cup the wrist a little bit and now I get kind of my maximum spin
78
00:03:58.400 --> 00:03:59.240
landing
79
00:03:59.240 --> 00:04:05.620
super soft or if I wanted to really get this thing running, say I had to keep
80
00:04:05.620 --> 00:04:06.760
it underneath
81
00:04:06.760 --> 00:04:11.140
a branch or something, I could play it low, but I could also incorporate
82
00:04:11.140 --> 00:04:12.720
closing the face
83
00:04:12.720 --> 00:04:18.590
and just really taking some of the spin off and getting it low and almost hook
84
00:04:18.590 --> 00:04:19.200
ing it to
85
00:04:19.200 --> 00:04:20.840
get it to run out a bit more.
86
00:04:20.840 --> 00:04:25.180
So the simple way is to play with the setup, the more advanced way is to play
87
00:04:25.180 --> 00:04:25.960
around with
88
00:04:25.960 --> 00:04:32.320
some of these wrist angles, you will naturally change some of your stroke.
89
00:04:32.320 --> 00:04:36.450
So oftentimes, if you're trying to go higher, you will swing a little bit fl
90
00:04:36.450 --> 00:04:37.200
atter and if
91
00:04:37.200 --> 00:04:41.450
you're trying to go lower, you will swing a little bit steeper, but it's the
92
00:04:41.450 --> 00:04:42.120
club face
93
00:04:42.120 --> 00:04:46.680
angle and the shaft lean impact that have the biggest impact on our trajectory
94
00:04:46.680 --> 00:04:47.080
and you
95
00:04:47.080 --> 00:04:53.680
can affect that a lot with your wrist angles in addition to your setup.
