The major factors for touch and distance control are discussed.
The major factors of distance control are contact, loft, and speed. Contact was goal number one, so let's hope we took care of that with the first part of the course. The loft is influenced by setup and release style. The main skills for training distance control are related to club speed, which is a result of your tempo and length of swing. Contact

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:06.860
Welcome back, golfers.
2
00:00:06.860 --> 00:00:12.140
Let's dig into how to control distance for our stock finesse wedge shot.
3
00:00:12.140 --> 00:00:18.110
So goal number two is taking that concept of solid contact where we built a
4
00:00:18.110 --> 00:00:18.980
relatively
5
00:00:18.980 --> 00:00:24.060
stable or consistent impact position and consistent impact.
6
00:00:24.060 --> 00:00:27.840
And now we're going to try to do the same thing with a couple different length
7
00:00:27.840 --> 00:00:28.360
of swings.
8
00:00:28.360 --> 00:00:30.840
I think at minimum, you need two.
9
00:00:30.840 --> 00:00:36.520
We could say one is about, I'll usually describe it as the corner.
10
00:00:36.520 --> 00:00:39.160
So the corner would be like 90 degrees.
11
00:00:39.160 --> 00:00:44.040
This is where the club goes from going backwards to traveling more upward.
12
00:00:44.040 --> 00:00:48.440
And on a lot of the 3D graphs, that's where some changes take place.
13
00:00:48.440 --> 00:00:53.170
So having one distance where you're a little bit below the corner and one where
14
00:00:53.170 --> 00:00:53.680
you're
15
00:00:53.680 --> 00:00:58.160
above can be enough, especially if you're just a weekend golfer.
16
00:00:58.160 --> 00:01:03.590
But I think if you're really trying to reach your potential, you probably want
17
00:01:03.590 --> 00:01:04.060
three different
18
00:01:04.060 --> 00:01:06.280
shots or three different length shots.
19
00:01:06.280 --> 00:01:09.430
So one would be in the backswing, bringing the club up to about belly button
20
00:01:09.430 --> 00:01:09.880
height,
21
00:01:09.880 --> 00:01:14.960
or sorry, to knee height, bringing the club kind of right about there.
22
00:01:14.960 --> 00:01:21.320
About shaft 45 degrees or on the clock surface, taking it to about 10.30.
23
00:01:21.320 --> 00:01:26.030
Shot number two would be bringing it up to about hip height or about nine o'
24
00:01:26.030 --> 00:01:26.760
clock.
25
00:01:26.760 --> 00:01:32.320
And this can be either the club head or you could feel with the hands if you're
26
00:01:32.320 --> 00:01:32.680
not really
27
00:01:32.680 --> 00:01:34.360
good at feeling the club head.
28
00:01:34.360 --> 00:01:39.790
And then lastly would be bringing it up to about belly button height or chest
29
00:01:39.790 --> 00:01:39.880
height,
30
00:01:39.880 --> 00:01:44.080
which would be closer to about a 45 degree angle cut like that.
31
00:01:44.080 --> 00:01:50.920
So with all of the swings, when it comes to distance control, we want to
32
00:01:50.920 --> 00:01:52.440
understand that
33
00:01:52.440 --> 00:01:55.000
there are a couple of different keys.
34
00:01:55.000 --> 00:02:00.910
In order to control distance, we have to control the loft or contact and then
35
00:02:00.910 --> 00:02:02.400
we have to control
36
00:02:02.400 --> 00:02:07.010
the rate of acceleration or the tempo and we have to control the length of
37
00:02:07.010 --> 00:02:07.720
swing.
38
00:02:07.720 --> 00:02:13.160
Ideally, we're going to get tempo where it's pretty consistent shot to shot and
39
00:02:13.160 --> 00:02:13.440
then the
40
00:02:13.440 --> 00:02:17.470
majority of your distance control is going to come down to the length of the
41
00:02:17.470 --> 00:02:18.080
swing.
42
00:02:18.080 --> 00:02:22.280
So you really have to practice those two different skills, tempo drills that
43
00:02:22.280 --> 00:02:23.920
help you work on
44
00:02:23.920 --> 00:02:29.880
controlling the rate that we're accelerating and then kind of length or swing
45
00:02:29.880 --> 00:02:30.680
distance
46
00:02:30.680 --> 00:02:34.960
drills in order to control how big of a swing you're taking.
47
00:02:34.960 --> 00:02:38.160
And then lastly, we have kind of ways to practice.
48
00:02:38.160 --> 00:02:42.520
So the most common ways to practice distance are either having some type of
49
00:02:42.520 --> 00:02:43.320
systematic
50
00:02:43.320 --> 00:02:47.890
or I'm going to hit it 10 yards typically with a lot of my students with kind
51
00:02:47.890 --> 00:02:48.600
of a normal
52
00:02:48.600 --> 00:02:54.310
tempo, let's say normal average build, knee height is going to be about 10
53
00:02:54.310 --> 00:02:55.240
yards, hip
54
00:02:55.240 --> 00:02:58.430
height is going to be about 20 yards, belly button height is going to be about
55
00:02:58.430 --> 00:02:59.120
30 yards.
56
00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:05.860
So that's why I like setting up some cones and doing 10, 20, 30 or 30, 20, 10
57
00:03:05.860 --> 00:03:06.400
or then
58
00:03:06.400 --> 00:03:11.860
throwing random numbers and calibrating where the club or where the ball is
59
00:03:11.860 --> 00:03:12.800
landing.
60
00:03:12.800 --> 00:03:18.470
But the basic here, like I said, stroke length and then tempo drills, you'll
61
00:03:18.470 --> 00:03:19.520
find a couple
62
00:03:19.520 --> 00:03:23.930
of those for each of them over on the right and then stations you can set up to
63
00:03:23.930 --> 00:03:24.480
really
64
00:03:24.480 --> 00:03:26.800
start calibrating your distance.
65
00:03:26.800 --> 00:03:30.700
Once you've established this, I do think it's easier to maintain than say you
66
00:03:30.700 --> 00:03:31.160
're full
67
00:03:31.160 --> 00:03:35.300
swing, it takes maybe one or two practices a week to kind of keep it, but at
68
00:03:35.300 --> 00:03:35.960
first you
69
00:03:35.960 --> 00:03:39.080
might have to put in a little bit more work to build it.
70
00:03:39.080 --> 00:03:44.510
So in the next club or sorry in the next class, we're going to discuss
71
00:03:44.510 --> 00:03:45.160
trajectory control
72
00:03:45.160 --> 00:03:50.200
and how do we vary our stock swing with the stock distances.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:06.860
Welcome back, golfers.
2
00:00:06.860 --> 00:00:12.140
Let's dig into how to control distance for our stock finesse wedge shot.
3
00:00:12.140 --> 00:00:18.110
So goal number two is taking that concept of solid contact where we built a
4
00:00:18.110 --> 00:00:18.980
relatively
5
00:00:18.980 --> 00:00:24.060
stable or consistent impact position and consistent impact.
6
00:00:24.060 --> 00:00:27.840
And now we're going to try to do the same thing with a couple different length
7
00:00:27.840 --> 00:00:28.360
of swings.
8
00:00:28.360 --> 00:00:30.840
I think at minimum, you need two.
9
00:00:30.840 --> 00:00:36.520
We could say one is about, I'll usually describe it as the corner.
10
00:00:36.520 --> 00:00:39.160
So the corner would be like 90 degrees.
11
00:00:39.160 --> 00:00:44.040
This is where the club goes from going backwards to traveling more upward.
12
00:00:44.040 --> 00:00:48.440
And on a lot of the 3D graphs, that's where some changes take place.
13
00:00:48.440 --> 00:00:53.170
So having one distance where you're a little bit below the corner and one where
14
00:00:53.170 --> 00:00:53.680
you're
15
00:00:53.680 --> 00:00:58.160
above can be enough, especially if you're just a weekend golfer.
16
00:00:58.160 --> 00:01:03.590
But I think if you're really trying to reach your potential, you probably want
17
00:01:03.590 --> 00:01:04.060
three different
18
00:01:04.060 --> 00:01:06.280
shots or three different length shots.
19
00:01:06.280 --> 00:01:09.430
So one would be in the backswing, bringing the club up to about belly button
20
00:01:09.430 --> 00:01:09.880
height,
21
00:01:09.880 --> 00:01:14.960
or sorry, to knee height, bringing the club kind of right about there.
22
00:01:14.960 --> 00:01:21.320
About shaft 45 degrees or on the clock surface, taking it to about 10.30.
23
00:01:21.320 --> 00:01:26.030
Shot number two would be bringing it up to about hip height or about nine o'
24
00:01:26.030 --> 00:01:26.760
clock.
25
00:01:26.760 --> 00:01:32.320
And this can be either the club head or you could feel with the hands if you're
26
00:01:32.320 --> 00:01:32.680
not really
27
00:01:32.680 --> 00:01:34.360
good at feeling the club head.
28
00:01:34.360 --> 00:01:39.790
And then lastly would be bringing it up to about belly button height or chest
29
00:01:39.790 --> 00:01:39.880
height,
30
00:01:39.880 --> 00:01:44.080
which would be closer to about a 45 degree angle cut like that.
31
00:01:44.080 --> 00:01:50.920
So with all of the swings, when it comes to distance control, we want to
32
00:01:50.920 --> 00:01:52.440
understand that
33
00:01:52.440 --> 00:01:55.000
there are a couple of different keys.
34
00:01:55.000 --> 00:02:00.910
In order to control distance, we have to control the loft or contact and then
35
00:02:00.910 --> 00:02:02.400
we have to control
36
00:02:02.400 --> 00:02:07.010
the rate of acceleration or the tempo and we have to control the length of
37
00:02:07.010 --> 00:02:07.720
swing.
38
00:02:07.720 --> 00:02:13.160
Ideally, we're going to get tempo where it's pretty consistent shot to shot and
39
00:02:13.160 --> 00:02:13.440
then the
40
00:02:13.440 --> 00:02:17.470
majority of your distance control is going to come down to the length of the
41
00:02:17.470 --> 00:02:18.080
swing.
42
00:02:18.080 --> 00:02:22.280
So you really have to practice those two different skills, tempo drills that
43
00:02:22.280 --> 00:02:23.920
help you work on
44
00:02:23.920 --> 00:02:29.880
controlling the rate that we're accelerating and then kind of length or swing
45
00:02:29.880 --> 00:02:30.680
distance
46
00:02:30.680 --> 00:02:34.960
drills in order to control how big of a swing you're taking.
47
00:02:34.960 --> 00:02:38.160
And then lastly, we have kind of ways to practice.

or I'm going to hit it 10 yards typically with a lot of my students with kind

00:02:47.890 --> 00:02:48.600

tempo, let's say normal average build, knee height is going to be about 10
53
00:02:54.310 --> 00:02:55.240
yards, hip
54
00:02:55.240 --> 00:02:58.430
height is going to be about 20 yards, belly button height is going to be about
55
00:02:58.430 --> 00:02:59.120
30 yards.
56
00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:05.860
So that's why I like setting up some cones and doing 10, 20, 30 or 30, 20, 10
