A simple feel for using the bottom of the wedge correctly
One of the most important concepts for consistent wedge play is to build a "margin of error". Luckily, one of the easiest ways to do this is through proper use of the "bounce". For players who are unfamiliar with this pattern, this is one of my favorite drill progressions; it should not only eliminate any contact issues (such as digging with the leading edge), but it should also help engrain the "coasting" pattern that is required to create an even, sliding of the club along the ground during the release.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.760
This drill video is brushing the bounce.
2
00:00:03.760 --> 00:00:10.820
So one of the important concepts for getting consistent with your wedge play is
3
00:00:10.820 --> 00:00:11.240
building
4
00:00:11.240 --> 00:00:14.760
a margin of air and part of that is using the bounce properly.
5
00:00:14.760 --> 00:00:19.560
So the coasting on the way through is part of what helps you get the club to
6
00:00:19.560 --> 00:00:20.360
just slide
7
00:00:20.360 --> 00:00:21.740
along the ground.
8
00:00:21.740 --> 00:00:26.380
You basically want the back edge of the club to slide along the ground for as
9
00:00:26.380 --> 00:00:27.320
long as possible
10
00:00:27.320 --> 00:00:32.960
or I'd say minimum couple inches, maximum six inches.
11
00:00:32.960 --> 00:00:37.490
The goal I give my students is usually about four to six inches of just getting
12
00:00:37.490 --> 00:00:38.080
the club
13
00:00:38.080 --> 00:00:40.320
to slide along the ground.
14
00:00:40.320 --> 00:00:44.590
And there are a couple of different ways that I'll get students to feel the
15
00:00:44.590 --> 00:00:45.440
club sliding
16
00:00:45.440 --> 00:00:48.480
along the ground for the first time.
17
00:00:48.480 --> 00:00:52.220
If they're used to kind of having more of a leading edge or kind of really
18
00:00:52.220 --> 00:00:53.120
hitting down
19
00:00:53.120 --> 00:00:59.600
on the ball, we'll do what I call brushing through bounce in order to get the
20
00:00:59.600 --> 00:01:00.320
club to
21
00:01:00.320 --> 00:01:02.360
slide along the ground.
22
00:01:02.360 --> 00:01:05.960
So there's a couple of different ways that I'll do it.
23
00:01:05.960 --> 00:01:14.570
First version, we'll grab, we'll do one golf ball and we'll just start similar
24
00:01:14.570 --> 00:01:15.120
to like
25
00:01:15.120 --> 00:01:19.960
we would do with the three wood or flat spot drill in the full swing.
26
00:01:19.960 --> 00:01:23.620
We're going to start a couple inches behind the golf ball and then we're just
27
00:01:23.620 --> 00:01:23.720
going to
28
00:01:23.720 --> 00:01:32.400
slide through feeling the body or the chest rotation bring the club through.
29
00:01:32.400 --> 00:01:37.780
So once I have that feeling, then I'm going to try and duplicate that feeling
30
00:01:37.780 --> 00:01:38.440
with the
31
00:01:38.440 --> 00:01:40.920
ball there.
32
00:01:40.920 --> 00:01:44.840
So just sliding the club along the ground.
33
00:01:44.840 --> 00:01:47.960
So then the second option is I'm going to do it in more of a rhythm drill and
34
00:01:47.960 --> 00:01:48.360
there's
35
00:01:48.360 --> 00:01:50.400
two common ways that I'll use that.
36
00:01:50.400 --> 00:01:57.880
So one would be I get the club brushing back and forth and then while the club
37
00:01:57.880 --> 00:01:59.200
is brushing,
38
00:01:59.200 --> 00:02:03.840
I just walk myself in so I can get a sense of what it would be like to brush
39
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:04.480
and make
40
00:02:04.480 --> 00:02:06.760
contact with the golf ball.
41
00:02:06.760 --> 00:02:10.420
And then similar to what we do in the full swing when we're working on these
42
00:02:10.420 --> 00:02:11.600
rhythm drills
43
00:02:11.600 --> 00:02:18.200
is we'll line up a few golf balls and we'll just try to get the club to brush
44
00:02:18.200 --> 00:02:19.000
along the
45
00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:21.840
ground on each swing.
46
00:02:21.840 --> 00:02:25.500
One of the things about hitting multiple golf balls is it's really hard to do
47
00:02:25.500 --> 00:02:25.840
that with
48
00:02:25.840 --> 00:02:27.440
just the hands.
49
00:02:27.440 --> 00:02:34.240
So here I'm getting it brush, getting it brush, getting it brush.
50
00:02:34.240 --> 00:02:35.240
Just like that.
51
00:02:35.240 --> 00:02:40.890
Ideally, they'll come off with somewhat similar trajectories, they'll come off
52
00:02:40.890 --> 00:02:41.980
with somewhat
53
00:02:41.980 --> 00:02:43.880
similar contact.
54
00:02:43.880 --> 00:02:50.980
Then the last step would be just trying to do the brush a few times and when I
55
00:02:50.980 --> 00:02:52.240
'm brushing
56
00:02:52.240 --> 00:02:57.520
back and forth, I'm feeling it swing back as well as through.
57
00:02:57.520 --> 00:03:01.180
What I'll end up doing is then I'll set up to the golf ball and I'll imagine
58
00:03:01.180 --> 00:03:01.680
that I brushed
59
00:03:01.680 --> 00:03:07.790
it through and then I'll start it when I would feel it swing back and then I'll
60
00:03:07.790 --> 00:03:08.720
just kind
61
00:03:08.720 --> 00:03:12.080
of ride it and bring it through to get it to brush again.
62
00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:15.800
So these are a couple of different ways to really focus on the club, brushing
63
00:03:15.800 --> 00:03:16.400
the ground
64
00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:20.080
or hitting the bounce side of the club on the ground.
65
00:03:20.080 --> 00:03:25.630
If I was to do this with the leading edge, it would tend to literally bounce up
66
00:03:25.630 --> 00:03:26.160
or come
67
00:03:26.160 --> 00:03:28.200
up off the ground very quickly.
68
00:03:28.200 --> 00:03:32.400
So if you find that you hit a lot of chunk shots where you just kind of lay sod
69
00:03:32.400 --> 00:03:32.600
over
70
00:03:32.600 --> 00:03:36.800
it or if you hit a lot of thin shots, you may be uncomfortable with how the
71
00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:37.400
club is hitting
72
00:03:37.400 --> 00:03:41.360
the ground and doing this little rhythm drill, getting more acquainted with
73
00:03:41.360 --> 00:03:42.400
bounce and getting
74
00:03:42.400 --> 00:03:46.670
more consistent with your ground contact can ultimately elevate your level of
75
00:03:46.670 --> 00:03:47.640
consistency.
76
00:03:47.640 --> 00:03:48.920
So quick demonstration.
77
00:03:48.920 --> 00:03:55.740
Regardless of whatever technique I decide to use as long as I get the club to
78
00:03:55.740 --> 00:03:56.640
slide along
79
00:03:56.640 --> 00:04:01.050
the ground for that period of time before the golf ball and a little bit after
80
00:04:01.050 --> 00:04:01.560
it, I'm
81
00:04:01.560 --> 00:04:03.000
probably going to hit an okay shot.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.760
This drill video is brushing the bounce.
2
00:00:03.760 --> 00:00:10.820
So one of the important concepts for getting consistent with your wedge play is
3
00:00:10.820 --> 00:00:11.240
building
4
00:00:11.240 --> 00:00:14.760
a margin of air and part of that is using the bounce properly.

just slide
7
00:00:20.360 --> 00:00:21.740
along the ground.
8
00:00:21.740 --> 00:00:26.380
You basically want the back edge of the club to slide along the ground for as
9
00:00:26.380 --> 00:00:27.320

10
00:00:27.320 --> 00:00:32.960

to slide along the ground.
14
00:00:40.320 --> 00:00:44.590
And there are a couple of different ways that I'll get students to feel the
15
00:00:44.590 --> 00:00:45.440
club sliding
16
00:00:45.440 --> 00:00:48.480
along the ground for the first time.
17
00:00:48.480 --> 00:00:52.220
If they're used to kind of having more of a leading edge or kind of really
18
00:00:52.220 --> 00:00:53.120

27
00:01:23.620 --> 00:01:23.720
going to

slide through feeling the body or the chest rotation bring the club through.
29
00:01:32.400 --> 00:01:37.780

ball there.
32
00:01:40.920 --> 00:01:44.840

00:02:41.980 --> 00:02:43.880
similar contact.
