If you don't feel the distance, then learn how to see it with this visualization drill.
I like using feel references as my go-to way of controlling distance. Typically, golfers feel 3 different finesse wedge distances:
- Knee Height
- Hip Height
- Belly Button Height
But not everyone does well with a feel system. For some of my students, we'll use more of a visual approach. To visualize distance control, you want to visualize the apex of the shot. You'll want to see both the height of the apex and the location, then just try and hit the ball through your apex hoop and you'll be knocking your wedges close in no time.

2
00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:09.000
This finesse wedge concept video is visualizing distance control.
3
00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:13.000
So, you've seen in the distance control section that I'm a big fan
4
00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:17.000
of using a smooth tempo and controlling the length of swing
5
00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:20.000
in order to regulate your distance control.
6
00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:23.000
But some golfers aren't very feel oriented,
7
00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:26.000
and they do a little bit better with a visualization technique.
8
00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:29.000
So, basically what we're going to do is we're going to imagine
9
00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:32.000
a circle at the apex of the shot.
10
00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:40.000
So, if I am pretty consistent with my different length shots,
11
00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:43.000
or my, let's say, my ball position and my loft,
12
00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:45.000
let's say if I'm pretty constant with that,
13
00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:48.000
then the ball is going to take off on a consistent angle
14
00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:50.000
for most of these shots.
15
00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:53.000
And so, what I can do is I can imagine, like, let's say,
16
00:00:53.000 --> 00:00:57.000
it would be lower than this, so I'll bring it down just a bit.
17
00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:02.000
But let's say that the ball was always taking off at this angle like so.
18
00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:06.000
Well, if I hit it through this hoop here,
19
00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:10.000
it might only go, you know, eight yards or so.
20
00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:16.000
If I continued this, down there, that might double the distance.
21
00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:19.000
So, basically, what I have to do is I have to get used to seeing
22
00:01:19.000 --> 00:01:23.000
the trajectory and imagining where the peak is going to be,
23
00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:27.000
and then feeling how much energy do I need to,
24
00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:31.000
we're kind of sensing, how much energy do I need to put into the golf ball
25
00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:34.000
in order to get it to go through that hoop.
26
00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:36.000
Now, if you have different ball positions,
27
00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:39.000
you're going to have to experiment with these different ball positions
28
00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:41.000
to really dial this in.
29
00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:47.000
So, as an example, let's say I'm going to use my standard ball position here.
30
00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:51.000
And that was about, you know, reaching its maximum height
31
00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:53.000
about over the green.
32
00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:57.000
So, the next one, I'm going to now try to get it to reach its maximum height.
33
00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:03.000
Another two paces further forward.
34
00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:06.000
And I wasn't really worried about how big of a swing I was taking.
35
00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:11.000
I was just focused on when this ball was going to reach its maximum speed
36
00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:15.000
and kind of feeling the shot or how big of a swing
37
00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:17.000
in order to make it match that picture.
38
00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:22.000
Now, I will have to experiment with, if I put the ball back
39
00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:25.000
and hit more of my low shot,
40
00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:30.000
well, depending on where that peak is,
41
00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:34.000
I'm going to get more roll, so I have to move that peak closer to me.
42
00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:37.000
Alternatively, if I'm going to hit more of my high shot,
43
00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:42.000
I have to move the peak further along or closer to the intended target
44
00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:43.000
and a little bit higher.
45
00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.000
So, if I have the ball position forward and I'm trying to hit it
46
00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:50.000
close to that ball, I now have to look quite high and quite far
47
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:54.000
in order to reach that peak distance.
48
00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:56.000
Kind of more like that.
49
00:02:56.000 --> 00:03:00.000
Hit it a little bit past, but hit my window pretty good.
50
00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:05.530
So, if you struggle with more of a feel-style way of getting your distance
51
00:03:05.530 --> 00:03:06.000
control,
52
00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:10.000
then I highly recommend using a visual and you want to visualize the height
53
00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:13.640
and you want to visualize that apex of where that's going to be compared to the
54
00:03:13.640 --> 00:03:14.000
shot.
55
00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:18.000
For your standard shot, it's probably going to be close to half,
56
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:20.780
but if you're hitting it low or hitting it high, you're going to have to vary
57
00:03:20.780 --> 00:03:22.000
it accordingly.
58
00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:25.710
So, experiment with this, some golfers love it, it helps them feel a little
59
00:03:25.710 --> 00:03:26.000
less technical
60
00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:30.510
and a little more kind of like an artist around the green instead of trying to
61
00:03:30.510 --> 00:03:31.000
be a scientist.
62
00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:33.000
One more.
63
00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:37.000
Visualize that hoop.
64
00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:40.000
Right through it.
65
00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:43.000
At least we'll say it was. That was good.
66
