To avoid the painful misses off the hardpan, play the ball back with the heel off the ground.

When playing off hardpan, you want to avoid blading it or chunking it with the leading edge digging into the dirt. One way to avoid this is to play the ball slightly back but then set up with the heel off the ground. The other swing adjustment that you'll want to make is making sure to hit it more with your pivot rather than a stall and throw.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.040
This video, we're going to talk through hardpan.

2
00:00:08.040 --> 00:00:12.420
So this is one of those shots that you don't face a lot or you face a lot.

3
00:00:12.420 --> 00:00:14.320
Some courses have a lot more than others.

4
00:00:14.320 --> 00:00:19.040
Some market is ground under repair, but hardpan is when it's basically clay or

5
00:00:19.040 --> 00:00:19.960
dirt and there's

6
00:00:19.960 --> 00:00:21.520
no grass.

7
00:00:21.520 --> 00:00:26.860
The two shots you really want to try to avoid are the club bouncing up off the

8
00:00:26.860 --> 00:00:28.480
ground and

9
00:00:28.480 --> 00:00:31.880
blading it, kind of like that.

10
00:00:31.880 --> 00:00:35.800
That went around the right distance, but it was not good contact.

11
00:00:35.800 --> 00:00:39.260
And then the other one you want to avoid is hitting leading edge behind and

12
00:00:39.260 --> 00:00:40.160
kind of chunking

13
00:00:40.160 --> 00:00:41.640
it, kind of like this.

14
00:00:41.640 --> 00:00:45.790
So there's a few set up changes that we're going to make and the stroke change

15
00:00:45.790 --> 00:00:46.240
that we're

16
00:00:46.240 --> 00:00:47.920
going to try to make.

17
00:00:47.920 --> 00:00:53.150
To help minimize the last shots, we can be more aggressive and air on not

18
00:00:53.150 --> 00:00:54.000
getting that

19
00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:55.040
first shot.

20
00:00:55.040 --> 00:01:00.570
So in general, the adjustments that we're going to make, we're going to open

21
00:01:00.570 --> 00:01:01.260
the club

22
00:01:01.260 --> 00:01:06.200
face just slightly, but we're going to air on raising the heel off the ground.

23
00:01:06.200 --> 00:01:08.920
So we're going to basically play this off the toe of the club.

24
00:01:08.920 --> 00:01:12.850
So when I open the club face, even if you don't have or even if you have a lot

25
00:01:12.850 --> 00:01:13.720
of bounce because

26
00:01:13.720 --> 00:01:17.160
the heel is off the ground, that'll get the toe to sit underneath the height of

27
00:01:17.160 --> 00:01:17.640
the golf

28
00:01:17.640 --> 00:01:18.640
ball.

29
00:01:18.640 --> 00:01:22.860
Secondly, to avoid kind of skimming it off the ground, I'm going to come a

30
00:01:22.860 --> 00:01:24.080
little shallow,

31
00:01:24.080 --> 00:01:29.100
but I'm going to make sure that I keep everything moving on the way through.

32
00:01:29.100 --> 00:01:33.320
I'm going to move more around as opposed to trying to swing the club straight

33
00:01:33.320 --> 00:01:33.760
at the

34
00:01:33.760 --> 00:01:34.760
target.

35
00:01:34.760 --> 00:01:38.350
So it's going to be a little bit more around sitting on the toe and we're going

36
00:01:38.350 --> 00:01:38.800
to air

37
00:01:38.800 --> 00:01:42.000
on having the ball position a little bit more back.

38
00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:46.370
You can get away with, if you keep the toe contact, that's the most important

39
00:01:46.370 --> 00:01:46.920
part of

40
00:01:46.920 --> 00:01:48.120
this shot.

41
00:01:48.120 --> 00:01:55.150
You can air on having the club face open and playing it really like a little

42
00:01:55.150 --> 00:01:55.760
cut shot with

43
00:01:55.760 --> 00:01:59.200
the ball position forward, but I think that that's a little bit more risky.

44
00:01:59.200 --> 00:02:02.800
So we'll do a little demonstration on the two main ways that you can adjust it

45
00:02:02.800 --> 00:02:03.200
so you

46
00:02:03.200 --> 00:02:06.520
can visualize how we're going to put this into play.

47
00:02:06.520 --> 00:02:12.100
So we've got the ball sitting a little bit further back off the toe just like

48
00:02:12.100 --> 00:02:12.800
this.

49
00:02:12.800 --> 00:02:18.730
And now we're going to air on skimming around, you'll see that that'll come out

50
00:02:18.730 --> 00:02:19.400
a little

51
00:02:19.400 --> 00:02:22.870
low because I had the ball position back, but because I get such clean contact,

52
00:02:22.870 --> 00:02:23.120
I'm

53
00:02:23.120 --> 00:02:26.360
going to tend to get a good amount of spin.

54
00:02:26.360 --> 00:02:32.080
So that's going to help the ball stop as long as I have enough green to work

55
00:02:32.080 --> 00:02:32.880
with.

56
00:02:32.880 --> 00:02:40.130
So ball position slightly back off the toe, swing a little bit more around to

57
00:02:40.130 --> 00:02:40.860
kind of

58
00:02:40.860 --> 00:02:41.860
skim it.

59
00:02:41.860 --> 00:02:44.320
Again, that comes out really nice.

60
00:02:44.320 --> 00:02:51.350
The risky shot here is if I have to go higher, if you have to go higher and

61
00:02:51.350 --> 00:02:52.900
there's really

62
00:02:52.900 --> 00:02:58.080
no other option, then you will want to play the ball a little bit more forward.

63
00:02:58.080 --> 00:03:01.920
But to avoid the club skimming off the ground, you're going to play more of an

64
00:03:01.920 --> 00:03:02.540
outside in

65
00:03:02.540 --> 00:03:03.540
kind of cut shot.

66
00:03:03.540 --> 00:03:07.720
So I'm going to lean a little bit more left, swing a little bit more up and

67
00:03:07.720 --> 00:03:08.500
down and kind

68
00:03:08.500 --> 00:03:11.400
of hit it almost like an explosion bunker shot.

69
00:03:11.400 --> 00:03:14.460
Now you'll typically find that this doesn't get as much spin, so you're going

70
00:03:14.460 --> 00:03:14.840
to have

71
00:03:14.840 --> 00:03:18.300
to play for a little bit of release when it lands.

72
00:03:18.300 --> 00:03:19.560
But we'll try that again.

73
00:03:19.560 --> 00:03:24.790
Ball position forward awkward when we're setting up off the toe, a little bit

74
00:03:24.790 --> 00:03:25.540
more of a cut

75
00:03:25.540 --> 00:03:26.540
shot.

76
00:03:26.540 --> 00:03:28.920
That's the risk on playing the ball position forward.

77
00:03:28.920 --> 00:03:34.860
It wasn't a terrible shot, but it went way over the green borderline bladed.

78
00:03:34.860 --> 00:03:38.580
If you do have a little bit of grass, so that was pure dirt, but if you have a

79
00:03:38.580 --> 00:03:39.180
little bit

80
00:03:39.180 --> 00:03:44.140
of grass, then it's a lot easier to get away with that shot.

81
00:03:44.140 --> 00:03:49.630
So there, ball position or ball was sitting on, you can see just some really

82
00:03:49.630 --> 00:03:50.900
kind of gnarly.

83
00:03:50.900 --> 00:03:53.180
It's really thin, but it's at least some grass.

84
00:03:53.180 --> 00:03:57.380
When it's sitting on the ground here, it can be in a little depression.

85
00:03:57.380 --> 00:03:59.980
You can easily get the club to bounce up off the ground.

86
00:03:59.980 --> 00:04:03.060
So let's do one more quick demo just in case.

87
00:04:03.060 --> 00:04:09.620
So we've got ballback off the toe, a little bit more of a flat or a round shot.

88
00:04:09.620 --> 00:04:13.540
That's going to come out low, but have a bunch of check and a bunch of spin.

89
00:04:13.540 --> 00:04:15.820
That was nice, clean contact.

90
00:04:15.820 --> 00:04:21.580
If you do have to air on hitting it higher, it's risky unless you have a little

91
00:04:21.580 --> 00:04:21.980
bit of

92
00:04:21.980 --> 00:04:27.520
grass, but still trying to hit it off the toe, but a little bit more of a st

93
00:04:27.520 --> 00:04:28.460
eeper kind

94
00:04:28.460 --> 00:04:32.900
of cut outside in, kind of plays almost like a bunker shot.

95
00:04:32.900 --> 00:04:36.300
Again, that's a lot riskier than the first one.

96
00:04:36.300 --> 00:04:39.210
The first one, as long as you swing more around, you're probably going to make

97
00:04:39.210 --> 00:04:39.500
clean

98
00:04:39.500 --> 00:04:44.720
contact and get it up around, giving yourself a chance to save with a good putt

99
00:04:44.720 --> 00:04:44.860
.
