Set up is the simplest way to change trajectory angle for wedge shots
The simplest way to change trajectory is with setup. When you want to hit it lower, play the ball more back and closer to you. You'll have to stand the club up a little taller as a result. If you want to hit it higher, then play the ball forward and stand further away. You'll have to lay the club a little lower at start to make up for the setup changes. Master these three positions and you'll have all the basic shots for around the green.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.420
In this video we're going to demonstrate adjusting your trajectory with setup.
2
00:00:10.420 --> 00:00:16.280
So we can adjust our trajectory either with our setup or with changing our
3
00:00:16.280 --> 00:00:17.220
stroke.
4
00:00:17.220 --> 00:00:21.660
For most golfers I find that the easiest place to start is setup.
5
00:00:21.660 --> 00:00:26.900
So I've got this line as kind of our intended target and I've got my ball
6
00:00:26.900 --> 00:00:27.460
position kind
7
00:00:27.460 --> 00:00:30.400
of somewhere here in the middle as my standard.
8
00:00:30.400 --> 00:00:34.250
Now if I want to try to hit it lower what I'm going to do is I'm going to bring
9
00:00:34.250 --> 00:00:35.500
the ball
10
00:00:35.500 --> 00:00:38.640
closer to me and further back.
11
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:40.460
So closer to my right foot.
12
00:00:40.460 --> 00:00:45.710
If I'm going to try to hit this higher then I'm going to bring it forward and
13
00:00:45.710 --> 00:00:46.180
further
14
00:00:46.180 --> 00:00:47.320
away from me.
15
00:00:47.320 --> 00:00:51.130
So from the down the line view you can see that it has a ball position kind of
16
00:00:51.130 --> 00:00:51.520
angle
17
00:00:51.520 --> 00:00:53.400
something like this.
18
00:00:53.400 --> 00:00:57.370
Sometimes I see golfers struggle with especially when they move it forward that
19
00:00:57.370 --> 00:00:58.100
sometimes they'll
20
00:00:58.100 --> 00:01:03.320
even move it closer and so that encourages more of kind of a chopping or a
21
00:01:03.320 --> 00:01:03.580
cutting type
22
00:01:03.580 --> 00:01:06.420
stroke which is the opposite of what we're trying to go for here.
23
00:01:06.420 --> 00:01:12.980
So if my standard shot we'll see if I can miss this back ball good.
24
00:01:12.980 --> 00:01:17.330
So if my standard shot kind of has a trajectory like that if I don't change my
25
00:01:17.330 --> 00:01:18.040
stance and
26
00:01:18.040 --> 00:01:23.350
just put the ball by this further back one where it's now kind of towards the
27
00:01:23.350 --> 00:01:24.140
back half
28
00:01:24.140 --> 00:01:28.280
of my foot and a good three four inches closer to me.
29
00:01:28.280 --> 00:01:30.700
Now the club is much more vertical.
30
00:01:30.700 --> 00:01:35.950
If I make a similar stroke I'm going to hit the ball much earlier in the arc
31
00:01:35.950 --> 00:01:36.600
and I'm going
32
00:01:36.600 --> 00:01:40.350
to hit more down on him and hit ball first and you'll see that for a shorter
33
00:01:40.350 --> 00:01:40.940
shot that
34
00:01:40.940 --> 00:01:43.880
landed closer to me and had a lot more roll out to it.
35
00:01:43.880 --> 00:01:48.010
Now the only thing that I'm going to have to do differently for the higher shot
36
00:01:48.010 --> 00:01:48.360
is I'm
37
00:01:48.360 --> 00:01:52.220
typically going to widen my stance a little bit and I'm going to do that by
38
00:01:52.220 --> 00:01:52.800
moving my
39
00:01:52.800 --> 00:01:57.170
back foot forward so that the ball position is still kind of even with the
40
00:01:57.170 --> 00:01:58.000
inside of my
41
00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:01.440
left foot or the left toe kind of like this.
42
00:02:01.440 --> 00:02:06.000
I'm also going to typically lower the club because it's a little bit further
43
00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:06.640
away.
44
00:02:06.640 --> 00:02:10.370
By having the ball position forward you'll see that that naturally gets the
45
00:02:10.370 --> 00:02:10.960
shaft more
46
00:02:10.960 --> 00:02:11.960
vertical.
47
00:02:11.960 --> 00:02:16.010
The big things that I can do to adjust the trajectory are either play with how
48
00:02:16.010 --> 00:02:16.760
much shaft
49
00:02:16.760 --> 00:02:20.760
lean I have or play with how much face openness I have.
50
00:02:20.760 --> 00:02:26.000
When I put the ball back and kept my hands in the middle that increased the
51
00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:26.600
shaft lean
52
00:02:26.600 --> 00:02:30.080
and to get the club face square I ended up closing it a little bit.
53
00:02:30.080 --> 00:02:33.740
Here when the ball is forward that's going to naturally make the club stand up
54
00:02:33.740 --> 00:02:34.200
a little
55
00:02:34.200 --> 00:02:41.350
bit more straight and so that's going to tend to bring the club with less shaft
56
00:02:41.350 --> 00:02:41.640
lean
57
00:02:41.640 --> 00:02:49.320
and more loft and therefore I'm going to hit it higher.
58
00:02:49.320 --> 00:02:54.560
So that goes higher has more spin so those three balls ended up kind of in a
59
00:02:54.560 --> 00:02:55.600
rough area.
60
00:02:55.600 --> 00:02:59.040
You'll see that when the ball was back I took the shortest swing when it was in
61
00:02:59.040 --> 00:02:59.620
my middle
62
00:02:59.620 --> 00:03:03.320
position that was a little bit further and when I went higher I had to take a
63
00:03:03.320 --> 00:03:04.000
much bigger
64
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:05.480
swing.
65
00:03:05.480 --> 00:03:08.880
Keep that in mind that when you're practicing this you will have to put more
66
00:03:08.880 --> 00:03:09.520
effort into
67
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:15.170
the higher shot but it oftentimes if you make sure you don't blade it if you
68
00:03:15.170 --> 00:03:16.000
make sure you
69
00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:20.070
get underneath it it's the easiest one to use the bounce so you have a pretty
70
00:03:20.070 --> 00:03:20.800
good margin
71
00:03:20.800 --> 00:03:23.080
of error as far as your contact location.
72
00:03:23.080 --> 00:03:28.360
So this is the simplest option for playing around with your trajectory.
73
00:03:28.360 --> 00:03:33.600
If you want you can dig into some more advanced ways if we end up changing your
74
00:03:33.600 --> 00:03:34.280
setup or sorry
75
00:03:34.280 --> 00:03:40.200
if we end up changing your stroke in addition to changing your setup.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.420
In this video we're going to demonstrate adjusting your trajectory with setup.
2
00:00:10.420 --> 00:00:16.280
So we can adjust our trajectory either with our setup or with changing our
3
00:00:16.280 --> 00:00:17.220
stroke.
4
00:00:17.220 --> 00:00:21.660
For most golfers I find that the easiest place to start is setup.
5
00:00:21.660 --> 00:00:26.900
So I've got this line as kind of our intended target and I've got my ball
6
00:00:26.900 --> 00:00:27.460
position kind
7
00:00:27.460 --> 00:00:30.400
of somewhere here in the middle as my standard.
8
00:00:30.400 --> 00:00:34.250
Now if I want to try to hit it lower what I'm going to do is I'm going to bring
9
00:00:34.250 --> 00:00:35.500
the ball
10
00:00:35.500 --> 00:00:38.640
closer to me and further back.
11
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:40.460
So closer to my right foot.
12
00:00:40.460 --> 00:00:45.710
If I'm going to try to hit this higher then I'm going to bring it forward and
13
00:00:45.710 --> 00:00:46.180
further
14
00:00:46.180 --> 00:00:47.320
away from me.
15
00:00:47.320 --> 00:00:51.130
So from the down the line view you can see that it has a ball position kind of
16
00:00:51.130 --> 00:00:51.520
angle
17
00:00:51.520 --> 00:00:53.400
something like this.
18
00:00:53.400 --> 00:00:57.370
Sometimes I see golfers struggle with especially when they move it forward that
19
00:00:57.370 --> 00:00:58.100
sometimes they'll
20
00:00:58.100 --> 00:01:03.320
even move it closer and so that encourages more of kind of a chopping or a
21
00:01:03.320 --> 00:01:03.580
cutting type
22
00:01:03.580 --> 00:01:06.420
stroke which is the opposite of what we're trying to go for here.
23
00:01:06.420 --> 00:01:12.980
So if my standard shot we'll see if I can miss this back ball good.
24
00:01:12.980 --> 00:01:17.330
So if my standard shot kind of has a trajectory like that if I don't change my
25
00:01:17.330 --> 00:01:18.040
stance and
26
00:01:18.040 --> 00:01:23.350
just put the ball by this further back one where it's now kind of towards the
27
00:01:23.350 --> 00:01:24.140
back half
28
00:01:24.140 --> 00:01:28.280
of my foot and a good three four inches closer to me.
29
00:01:28.280 --> 00:01:30.700
Now the club is much more vertical.
30
00:01:30.700 --> 00:01:35.950
If I make a similar stroke I'm going to hit the ball much earlier in the arc
31
00:01:35.950 --> 00:01:36.600
and I'm going
32
00:01:36.600 --> 00:01:40.350
to hit more down on him and hit ball first and you'll see that for a shorter
33
00:01:40.350 --> 00:01:40.940
shot that
34
00:01:40.940 --> 00:01:43.880
landed closer to me and had a lot more roll out to it.
35
00:01:43.880 --> 00:01:48.010
Now the only thing that I'm going to have to do differently for the higher shot
36
00:01:48.010 --> 00:01:48.360
is I'm
37
00:01:48.360 --> 00:01:52.220
typically going to widen my stance a little bit and I'm going to do that by
38
00:01:52.220 --> 00:01:52.800
moving my
39
00:01:52.800 --> 00:01:57.170
back foot forward so that the ball position is still kind of even with the
40
00:01:57.170 --> 00:01:58.000
inside of my
41
00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:01.440
left foot or the left toe kind of like this.
42
00:02:01.440 --> 00:02:06.000
I'm also going to typically lower the club because it's a little bit further
43
00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:06.640
away.
44
00:02:06.640 --> 00:02:10.370
By having the ball position forward you'll see that that naturally gets the
45
00:02:10.370 --> 00:02:10.960
shaft more
46
00:02:10.960 --> 00:02:11.960
vertical.
47
00:02:11.960 --> 00:02:16.010
The big things that I can do to adjust the trajectory are either play with how
48
00:02:16.010 --> 00:02:16.760
much shaft
49
00:02:16.760 --> 00:02:20.760
lean I have or play with how much face openness I have.
50
00:02:20.760 --> 00:02:26.000
When I put the ball back and kept my hands in the middle that increased the
51
00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:26.600
shaft lean
52
00:02:26.600 --> 00:02:30.080
and to get the club face square I ended up closing it a little bit.
53
00:02:30.080 --> 00:02:33.740
Here when the ball is forward that's going to naturally make the club stand up
54
00:02:33.740 --> 00:02:34.200
a little
55
00:02:34.200 --> 00:02:41.350
bit more straight and so that's going to tend to bring the club with less shaft
56
00:02:41.350 --> 00:02:41.640
lean
57
00:02:41.640 --> 00:02:49.320
and more loft and therefore I'm going to hit it higher.
58
00:02:49.320 --> 00:02:54.560
So that goes higher has more spin so those three balls ended up kind of in a
59
00:02:54.560 --> 00:02:55.600
rough area.
60
00:02:55.600 --> 00:02:59.040
You'll see that when the ball was back I took the shortest swing when it was in

much bigger
64
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:05.480
swing.
65
00:03:05.480 --> 00:03:08.880
Keep that in mind that when you're practicing this you will have to put more
66
00:03:08.880 --> 00:03:09.520
effort into
67
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:15.170
the higher shot but it oftentimes if you make sure you don't blade it if you
68
00:03:15.170 --> 00:03:16.000
