Basic Chip Shot

Course Progress
The basic chip shot is a classic shot for hitting it close around the greens. It's a small stroke that produces a low flight and a higher roll-to-carry ratio. To execute the shot, you'll use your normal finesse wedge setup, but the ball position will be slightly different. You will play the ball slightly closer to you but back in your stance (about your trail big toe) and your hands will be slightly forward (about even with your lead inner thigh). You'll stand the club up a little taller by presetting some ulnar deviation. Then I recommend hitting this shot primarily with a body pivot and little arm motion. Also, you won't want to hit this shot with too big of a backswing, so I recommend practicing just your short and medium-length backswings. Experiment with different clubs to see how far shots roll vs carry to help you choose the best shot on the course.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.560
this concept video is the basic chip shot so the finesse wedge kind of blends
2
00:00:10.560 --> 00:00:10.800
the
3
00:00:10.800 --> 00:00:14.640
chip shot the pitch shot I just call it shots you know around 40 yards and in
4
00:00:14.640 --> 00:00:18.600
the basic chip shot is going to be more of a shot where you're going to hit it
5
00:00:18.600 --> 00:00:21.920
primarily with your pivot it's not going to be your high spinning shot it's
6
00:00:21.920 --> 00:00:22.160
going
7
00:00:22.160 --> 00:00:27.440
to tend to launch a little bit lower and have a little bit more run but it's
8
00:00:27.440 --> 00:00:33.400
also going to be a shorter swing in general that's going to give you much
9
00:00:33.400 --> 00:00:37.880
more of a consistency of contact so this is a best shot when you have a little
10
00:00:37.880 --> 00:00:41.800
green or a little bit of fairway or rough to carry but then you have a fair
11
00:00:41.800 --> 00:00:46.600
amount of green for the ball to roll as a rough guide I wouldn't hit it if you
12
00:00:46.600 --> 00:00:51.320
have less than 50/50 carry to roll split but if you have less than that you
13
00:00:51.320 --> 00:00:55.880
probably hit it with your sandwich or approach wedge okay so the basic set up
14
00:00:55.880 --> 00:01:00.360
is going to be the classic finesse wedge but we're going to put the ball just
15
00:01:00.360 --> 00:01:05.580
slightly more back kind of in line with your big toe of the trail foot or even
16
00:01:05.580 --> 00:01:11.520
all the way into the midfoot or possibly even the pinky toe typically when we
17
00:01:11.520 --> 00:01:11.680
do
18
00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:15.840
this we're going to stand the club up a little bit more vertical so that the
19
00:01:15.840 --> 00:01:21.600
heel is just off the grass or off the ground the toe doesn't dig so this will
20
00:01:21.600 --> 00:01:25.160
allow us to be a little bit more aggressive with hitting down on the ball
21
00:01:25.160 --> 00:01:28.840
that's part of why we can get away with having the ball position back if we
22
00:01:28.840 --> 00:01:29.000
have
23
00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:34.120
the club sitting flat the heel will have a tendency to dig into the ground
24
00:01:34.120 --> 00:01:34.120
where
25
00:01:34.120 --> 00:01:38.640
if the toe hits it will tend to slide through so even though we have the ball
26
00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:43.640
position back oftentimes I see golfers lean back like this and that really
27
00:01:43.640 --> 00:01:47.560
messes up their contact you still want to feel like your weight is a little bit
28
00:01:47.560 --> 00:01:50.720
more on the front foot but most importantly you want to feel like your
29
00:01:50.720 --> 00:01:56.960
upper body is on top of your lower body also oftentimes when the wall goes back
30
00:01:56.960 --> 00:02:01.120
I see golfers kind of put their hands too far back I still want the grip to be
31
00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:05.800
roughly in line with your left eye so we've got it set up a little bit more on
32
00:02:05.800 --> 00:02:09.800
the toe of the club club in line with the left eye and then this is going to
33
00:02:09.800 --> 00:02:10.200
feel
34
00:02:10.200 --> 00:02:15.480
a lot more like a steve sticker style where we're not going to have a lot of
35
00:02:15.480 --> 00:02:22.140
wrists and I'm just going to hit this with pivoting my upper body while staying
36
00:02:22.140 --> 00:02:22.360
on
37
00:02:22.360 --> 00:02:29.020
top of my lower body and the normally I would train two different distances
38
00:02:29.020 --> 00:02:29.200
with
39
00:02:29.200 --> 00:02:33.480
each shot if you recall the the goal in this program is you get solid contact
40
00:02:33.480 --> 00:02:33.600
and
41
00:02:33.600 --> 00:02:37.760
then solid contact with a couple different distances with this club I
42
00:02:37.760 --> 00:02:43.920
actually like to do more like a 45 degree angle or like a 730 as well as a
43
00:02:43.920 --> 00:02:50.280
nine o'clock with this setup I don't really like to go and hit bigger shots
44
00:02:50.280 --> 00:02:54.360
yes it's definitely possible but if you have that much room I would usually
45
00:02:54.360 --> 00:03:00.560
recommend just going down to a longer club and and playing it still at the
46
00:03:00.560 --> 00:03:04.440
lower level so the two different distances I've got ball back I'm going to
47
00:03:04.440 --> 00:03:09.560
be on that front foot I'm going to do kind of the shorter one there and the
48
00:03:09.560 --> 00:03:14.960
the benefit of the shot I hit a little bit behind on that one but because I
49
00:03:14.960 --> 00:03:18.920
hit the toe of the club and because I kept my body going it worked out great
50
00:03:18.920 --> 00:03:25.120
it came out well the second version I would now we've got the ball back same
51
00:03:25.120 --> 00:03:29.920
setup and we're gonna bring it back to about hip height and again I'm just
52
00:03:29.920 --> 00:03:30.200
going
53
00:03:30.200 --> 00:03:35.440
to hit it with the upper body rotating making sure that my upper body covers
54
00:03:35.440 --> 00:03:40.160
so for a lot of golfers it feels like the arms stay in front but the clay club
55
00:03:40.160 --> 00:03:44.800
just kind of lags behind especially if you're used to having more of a of arms
56
00:03:44.800 --> 00:03:50.440
he hit which isn't the worst thing for some of your other finesse wedge shots
57
00:03:50.440 --> 00:03:56.160
but it's not my favorite power source for hitting the basic chip shot so get
58
00:03:56.160 --> 00:03:58.960
really comfortable with this shot there's a lot of times where this is the
59
00:03:58.960 --> 00:04:03.920
easiest stroke in general one of the philosophies that I have is the shorter
60
00:04:03.920 --> 00:04:08.320
the stroke the more repeatable it's going to be so oftentimes this simple shot
61
00:04:08.320 --> 00:04:14.480
here is the shortest and easiest stroke for any given short game shot if you
62
00:04:14.480 --> 00:04:14.640
have
63
00:04:14.640 --> 00:04:20.080
a fair amount of green to work with so I recommend working on this as part of
64
00:04:20.080 --> 00:04:24.840
your usual finesse wedge routine and then throwing that in the mix on the
65
00:04:24.840 --> 00:04:25.120
course
66
00:04:25.120 --> 00:04:29.960
when you have plenty of green to work with at least where you have to carry it
67
00:04:29.960 --> 00:04:35.560
less than half the total distance of the shot okay so in demonstration we'll
68
00:04:35.560 --> 00:04:35.760
walk
69
00:04:35.760 --> 00:04:40.160
through that setup so foot is turned out ball position back hands ahead leaning
70
00:04:40.160 --> 00:04:44.720
slightly forward with my upper body and then it's just a nice little turn of
71
00:04:44.720 --> 00:04:44.840
the
72
00:04:44.840 --> 00:04:49.310
upper body and lower body one thing that you can vary this is more of an
73
00:04:49.310 --> 00:04:49.720
advanced
74
00:04:49.720 --> 00:04:55.400
version but feeling a little bit of a turn down or almost closing of the club
75
00:04:55.400 --> 00:05:01.800
face can can make the ball release even more so if I didn't want to go down to
76
00:05:01.800 --> 00:05:07.080
my 50 my gap wedge if I wanted to do this with my sand wedge or my lob wedge I
77
00:05:07.080 --> 00:05:11.400
can get a little bit more release by feeling a little bit of turn down and
78
00:05:11.400 --> 00:05:16.610
release the club that's a more advanced version but if you're let's say below
79
00:05:16.610 --> 00:05:17.800
10
80
00:05:17.800 --> 00:05:21.880
or maybe even 15 handicap I'd recommend adding that into the mix it's a good
81
00:05:21.880 --> 00:05:25.680
skill to have so practice this to get really comfortable with your basic
82
00:05:25.680 --> 00:05:28.080
chip shot
