We take for granted what weight shift means, let's define it in this video.

You could shift your "weight" in a few different ways. It's easier to shift your weight by shifting your bigger body parts. This means either shipping your pelvis, your rib cage, or both. For the short game, the weight shift you want to avoid is shifting your hips as the main method. Either shifting your upper body or both is much better for controlling low point.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.920
This video is exploring the weight shift in the finesse wedge shot.

2
00:00:08.920 --> 00:00:12.420
So golfers often know that you're supposed to have most of your weight on the

3
00:00:12.420 --> 00:00:13.860
front foot

4
00:00:13.860 --> 00:00:14.860
for your finesse wedge shot.

5
00:00:14.860 --> 00:00:18.930
That helps you get more solid contact and allows you to get more extension

6
00:00:18.930 --> 00:00:19.560
through the

7
00:00:19.560 --> 00:00:25.080
ball to help create more of your shallow brushing and control height.

8
00:00:25.080 --> 00:00:27.880
But I often see golfers misapply it.

9
00:00:27.880 --> 00:00:29.880
So we're going to talk through it in this.

10
00:00:29.880 --> 00:00:33.440
There are three different ways we could shift weight, okay?

11
00:00:33.440 --> 00:00:37.420
So I'm standing here with my feet further apart than I would for a normal fines

12
00:00:37.420 --> 00:00:37.960
se wedge

13
00:00:37.960 --> 00:00:40.080
shot, just to exaggerate.

14
00:00:40.080 --> 00:00:44.390
So if I wanted to shift weight, I could shift weight from primarily the lower

15
00:00:44.390 --> 00:00:45.000
body.

16
00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:49.720
So there you see my upper body stayed in the middle of my stance here.

17
00:00:49.720 --> 00:00:53.870
This can be the one that gets us in trouble if we do this for our finesse wedge

18
00:00:53.870 --> 00:00:54.480
shot.

19
00:00:54.480 --> 00:00:58.900
And secondly, I could shift my upper body so I shifted enough that I could pick

20
00:00:58.900 --> 00:00:59.440
my foot

21
00:00:59.440 --> 00:01:02.240
up off the ground but my lower body stayed more in place.

22
00:01:02.240 --> 00:01:04.120
And then third, I could shift both.

23
00:01:04.120 --> 00:01:08.060
Now you'll see if I shift both, it's a little bit more subtle than if I did

24
00:01:08.060 --> 00:01:08.880
either of the

25
00:01:08.880 --> 00:01:12.080
first two because I'm moving more of my mass.

26
00:01:12.080 --> 00:01:17.720
Well the one that gets people in the most trouble is shifting the lower body.

27
00:01:17.720 --> 00:01:21.560
You'll see when I shift the lower body like this, this creates a bunch of axis

28
00:01:21.560 --> 00:01:21.920
tilt and

29
00:01:21.920 --> 00:01:25.420
my head actually lowers and gets closer to the ground.

30
00:01:25.420 --> 00:01:28.940
And when I'm tilted like this, this moves my low point backwards.

31
00:01:28.940 --> 00:01:32.210
So the way that we want to shift weight for the finesse wedge shot is a little

32
00:01:32.210 --> 00:01:32.720
bit more

33
00:01:32.720 --> 00:01:35.640
of a combination of the other two.

34
00:01:35.640 --> 00:01:43.340
So I'm going to feel like my upper body, my ribs have shifted a little bit onto

35
00:01:43.340 --> 00:01:43.960
my front

36
00:01:43.960 --> 00:01:47.240
foot, just kind of like this.

37
00:01:47.240 --> 00:01:51.720
So now, that also helps keep my shoulders more level.

38
00:01:51.720 --> 00:01:55.850
And then when I go to take my grip, that will accompany getting my upper body

39
00:01:55.850 --> 00:01:56.700
just a little

40
00:01:56.700 --> 00:01:59.640
bit rotated to the left or a little bit open.

41
00:01:59.640 --> 00:02:02.920
All of that helps get the bottom of the swing a little bit more forward of the

42
00:02:02.920 --> 00:02:03.920
golf ball.

43
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:08.050
As opposed to if I was back here, I have to make some type of swing adjustment

44
00:02:08.050 --> 00:02:08.560
to move

45
00:02:08.560 --> 00:02:10.120
the low point forward.

46
00:02:10.120 --> 00:02:14.800
So we're going to get upper, our feet are close together.

47
00:02:14.800 --> 00:02:18.040
So that allows this to be a pretty subtle movement.

48
00:02:18.040 --> 00:02:21.510
Now I'm going to shift basically until I could pick up my right foot, hands

49
00:02:21.510 --> 00:02:22.480
will stay in front

50
00:02:22.480 --> 00:02:23.540
of my chest.

51
00:02:23.540 --> 00:02:28.420
And now I'm in a good kind of position over my front foot where now I can make

52
00:02:28.420 --> 00:02:29.120
a stroke

53
00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:33.670
and I can go into some extension on the way through, but still have the low

54
00:02:33.670 --> 00:02:34.920
point forward.

55
00:02:34.920 --> 00:02:35.920
Okay.

56
00:02:35.920 --> 00:02:40.260
So little demonstration, we're going to get set up, shift a little bit forward,

57
00:02:40.260 --> 00:02:40.640
and we

58
00:02:40.640 --> 00:02:44.120
can exaggerate with, or we can experiment with how much we're going to shift

59
00:02:44.120 --> 00:02:44.660
forward.

60
00:02:44.660 --> 00:02:48.880
I'm on a little bit of a downslope, so I might do it even a little bit extra.

61
00:02:48.880 --> 00:02:53.100
And then from there, I'm just going to do a nice, easy finesse wedge shot with

62
00:02:53.100 --> 00:02:53.520
that a

63
00:02:53.520 --> 00:02:58.240
little hard, but pretty good contact, pretty good trajectory.

64
00:02:58.240 --> 00:03:03.080
So here we're going to really kind of crank it, so I'm going to overdo it.

65
00:03:03.080 --> 00:03:08.180
And the more that I get my upper body shifted on top there and stay there, that

66
00:03:08.180 --> 00:03:08.720
's going

67
00:03:08.720 --> 00:03:14.680
to allow me to go on a nasty kick, but good distance on that shot.

68
00:03:14.680 --> 00:03:22.370
That's going to allow me to go into more extension on the way through, which is

69
00:03:22.370 --> 00:03:23.520
really going

70
00:03:23.520 --> 00:03:31.470
to help apply that smooth force as well as give me a really nice brushing

71
00:03:31.470 --> 00:03:33.000
location.

72
00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:37.800
It allows me to hit the shot, so we'll exaggerate, think here for a second.

73
00:03:37.800 --> 00:03:43.580
It allows me to hit the shot with more of a feeling of kind of quiet arms and

74
00:03:43.580 --> 00:03:44.240
active

75
00:03:44.240 --> 00:03:48.680
body as opposed to getting too much hit from the arms.

76
00:03:48.680 --> 00:03:51.050
So if you're struggling with too much hit from the arms, it's probably because

77
00:03:51.050 --> 00:03:51.360
you're

78
00:03:51.360 --> 00:03:54.660
using too much arms on the way through, and sometimes that can happen as a

79
00:03:54.660 --> 00:03:55.160
result of

80
00:03:55.160 --> 00:04:00.680
being too much tilted when you try to shift your weight forward for the finesse

81
00:04:00.680 --> 00:04:01.440
wedge.
