Setting up with the face open is a skill to get used to if you want control around the greens.
Understanding how to open the face and get into a good setup position with the face open is critical for hitting open-faced finesse wedge shots. This is key for hitting higher shots, shots with spin, or shots out of thicker rough. The most common issue is that when golfers set up with the face open they move the ball position back. This exposes the hosel and makes solid contact incredibly difficult. Practice with this little open-face station until it becomes second nature.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.110
In this video, we're going to explore opening the club face for your finesse
2
00:00:08.110 --> 00:00:09.320
wedge shot.
3
00:00:09.320 --> 00:00:13.940
So a number of the finesse wedge shots are easier to hit if you open the club
4
00:00:13.940 --> 00:00:14.600
face.
5
00:00:14.600 --> 00:00:19.300
Opening the club face can expose a little bit more bounce and it can allow you
6
00:00:19.300 --> 00:00:19.940
to swing
7
00:00:19.940 --> 00:00:24.340
a little bit flatter or maybe even more aggressively on some of these shots.
8
00:00:24.340 --> 00:00:28.200
So as a skill, we want to get comfortable with open club face.
9
00:00:28.200 --> 00:00:31.560
I find that a lot of golfers struggle with it, so we'll talk through the two
10
00:00:31.560 --> 00:00:32.060
main things
11
00:00:32.060 --> 00:00:36.300
that I see golfers do poorly, and I got the GoPro so we can get the first
12
00:00:36.300 --> 00:00:37.160
person view
13
00:00:37.160 --> 00:00:38.360
of this.
14
00:00:38.360 --> 00:00:41.270
So rule number one is when you go to open the club face, you're going to open
15
00:00:41.270 --> 00:00:41.720
the club
16
00:00:41.720 --> 00:00:44.220
face and then take your normal grip.
17
00:00:44.220 --> 00:00:48.840
So what a lot of poor golfers do with this shot is they take their hands and
18
00:00:48.840 --> 00:00:49.500
they put
19
00:00:49.500 --> 00:00:53.440
it on the club and then they try to open the grip or open the club.
20
00:00:53.440 --> 00:00:58.190
And you'll see that in order to do that, I end up dropping that right shoulder,
21
00:00:58.190 --> 00:00:58.820
tilting
22
00:00:58.820 --> 00:01:01.620
a little bit behind the ball.
23
00:01:01.620 --> 00:01:04.660
And what will happen is as I apply speed, it's going to want to come back to my
24
00:01:04.660 --> 00:01:05.120
neutral
25
00:01:05.120 --> 00:01:07.160
position anyway.
26
00:01:07.160 --> 00:01:10.410
That's less of a danger here than in the full swing, because we're not going to
27
00:01:10.410 --> 00:01:11.020
be reaching
28
00:01:11.020 --> 00:01:15.330
anywhere near maximum speed, but it still happens, so it's easy to bring the
29
00:01:15.330 --> 00:01:15.960
club face
30
00:01:15.960 --> 00:01:16.960
back close.
31
00:01:16.960 --> 00:01:21.460
So step number one, rule number one is I like to use a standard where I've held
32
00:01:21.460 --> 00:01:22.080
the club
33
00:01:22.080 --> 00:01:26.490
up and I'm going to control how much I've opened the club and then take my grip
34
00:01:26.490 --> 00:01:26.800
.
35
00:01:26.800 --> 00:01:30.900
You could also do that down here, just like so, and use that as a little bit of
36
00:01:30.900 --> 00:01:32.000
a standardization
37
00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:33.000
technique.
38
00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:38.770
The second one is actually the more common issue that I see, which is when you
39
00:01:38.770 --> 00:01:39.220
go to
40
00:01:39.220 --> 00:01:46.770
adjust your stance for the open club face, I find a lot of golfers intuitively
41
00:01:46.770 --> 00:01:47.480
open their
42
00:01:47.480 --> 00:01:51.680
stance, but they do so without keeping the ball position the same.
43
00:01:51.680 --> 00:01:54.880
So I'll show you what I mean by that.
44
00:01:54.880 --> 00:02:00.580
So I am going to talk through what I think is kind of a more simple way to
45
00:02:00.580 --> 00:02:01.560
adjust for
46
00:02:01.560 --> 00:02:05.290
the high shot, and then I'll talk about the more advanced way to adjust for the
47
00:02:05.290 --> 00:02:06.440
high shot.
48
00:02:06.440 --> 00:02:09.240
So the simple way, I'm going to open the club face.
49
00:02:09.240 --> 00:02:12.790
The problem I see a lot of golfers do is then when they go to open the club
50
00:02:12.790 --> 00:02:13.760
face, they just
51
00:02:13.760 --> 00:02:18.960
turn their body, but they stayed in the same orientation kind of like this.
52
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:22.830
So what happened is now, here's the middle of my stance, I just move the ball
53
00:02:22.830 --> 00:02:23.440
position
54
00:02:23.440 --> 00:02:25.760
like two feet back in my stance.
55
00:02:25.760 --> 00:02:31.020
So when I go to hit, you can see, yeah, I hit an okay shot, but the purpose of
56
00:02:31.020 --> 00:02:31.200
opening
57
00:02:31.200 --> 00:02:35.080
the club face was to try to get a little bit more loft and that came out really
58
00:02:35.080 --> 00:02:35.880
low and
59
00:02:35.880 --> 00:02:40.600
cutting because the ball position was so far back.
60
00:02:40.600 --> 00:02:45.910
So what I advocate is trying to keep your stance more or less or your ball
61
00:02:45.910 --> 00:02:47.600
position the same.
62
00:02:47.600 --> 00:02:52.910
So I use this hula hoop to demonstrate how we're going to walk around the hula
63
00:02:52.910 --> 00:02:53.480
hoop to
64
00:02:53.480 --> 00:02:55.440
keep the ball position the same.
65
00:02:55.440 --> 00:02:59.700
So if I take the lie angle tool and I open the club face, you can see the club
66
00:02:59.700 --> 00:03:00.400
face starts
67
00:03:00.400 --> 00:03:01.840
pointing over there.
68
00:03:01.840 --> 00:03:05.870
Now I could either adjust for it by walking around the circle, keeping the ball
69
00:03:05.870 --> 00:03:06.440
position
70
00:03:06.440 --> 00:03:12.440
the same, and now the club face is aimed at the target.
71
00:03:12.440 --> 00:03:16.920
Or the other option is the more advanced option is I can lower the handle.
72
00:03:16.920 --> 00:03:21.540
So even though this club face is open, you can see as I lower the handle, that
73
00:03:21.540 --> 00:03:22.000
tends
74
00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:27.260
to make the face point in the direction of the target, that stops it from
75
00:03:27.260 --> 00:03:28.040
pointing too
76
00:03:28.040 --> 00:03:29.320
far to the right.
77
00:03:29.320 --> 00:03:34.520
So the simple way to play with the open club face is to open your stance.
78
00:03:34.520 --> 00:03:37.900
The more advanced way to play with the open club face is to actually close your
79
00:03:37.900 --> 00:03:38.320
stance
80
00:03:38.320 --> 00:03:40.480
and lower the handle.
81
00:03:40.480 --> 00:03:45.270
So we'll demonstrate kind of these adjustments, hopefully sometimes the hula
82
00:03:45.270 --> 00:03:46.080
hoop gets in
83
00:03:46.080 --> 00:03:50.480
the way of these demos, but we'll see how we do here.
84
00:03:50.480 --> 00:03:54.400
Okay, so quick demonstration, got the ball kind of in the middle of the hula
85
00:03:54.400 --> 00:03:55.080
hoop, and
86
00:03:55.080 --> 00:04:01.190
if I just baseline it, just do kind of a standard shot, we'll see again, oft
87
00:04:01.190 --> 00:04:02.320
entimes we end up
88
00:04:02.320 --> 00:04:03.320
hitting the hula hoop.
89
00:04:03.320 --> 00:04:06.600
And once I do that once or twice, I start pulling away from it.
90
00:04:06.600 --> 00:04:08.920
So we'll see how many we can get in here.
91
00:04:08.920 --> 00:04:13.330
So now as I open the club face, I put it a little bit more there, you can see
92
00:04:13.330 --> 00:04:13.960
the ball
93
00:04:13.960 --> 00:04:20.080
position is still the same, and if I feel like I swing around my ball position,
94
00:04:20.080 --> 00:04:20.760
you'll
95
00:04:20.760 --> 00:04:26.280
see that it has a little bit more of a higher trajectory, a little more spin,
96
00:04:26.280 --> 00:04:27.240
and compared
97
00:04:27.240 --> 00:04:30.840
to where I had my body position, it goes a little bit to the right.
98
00:04:30.840 --> 00:04:35.570
Now this more advanced one I know will hit the hula hoop, so we'll see how well
99
00:04:35.570 --> 00:04:36.600
we can
100
00:04:36.600 --> 00:04:38.960
mentally prepare for that.
101
00:04:38.960 --> 00:04:42.470
So the more advanced version, I'm going to open the club face, ball position is
102
00:04:42.470 --> 00:04:42.840
going
103
00:04:42.840 --> 00:04:44.640
to go even forward.
104
00:04:44.640 --> 00:04:48.690
Now you can see here's where I am, chestwise, I'm going to bring this foot back
105
00:04:48.690 --> 00:04:49.280
, and the
106
00:04:49.280 --> 00:04:54.110
reason I'm going to bring this foot back is so that I can bring the club on a
107
00:04:54.110 --> 00:04:54.800
flatter
108
00:04:54.800 --> 00:04:55.800
angle.
109
00:04:55.800 --> 00:04:59.200
If this is in the way, you'll see that the club wants to swing a little bit
110
00:04:59.200 --> 00:05:00.040
more up,
111
00:05:00.040 --> 00:05:06.420
and when I have the club down like this, I want to swing really flat, hey, only
112
00:05:06.420 --> 00:05:08.080
nip it.
113
00:05:08.080 --> 00:05:13.340
So I want to swing really flat, and by getting that foot back, it creates a
114
00:05:13.340 --> 00:05:14.040
little bit more
115
00:05:14.040 --> 00:05:15.040
space.
116
00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:20.300
That can be really useful on awkward bunker shots, as well as awkward downhill
117
00:05:20.300 --> 00:05:20.960
side-hill
118
00:05:20.960 --> 00:05:21.960
lives.
119
00:05:21.960 --> 00:05:26.550
So this video just talks through the simple ways and the complex ways for how
120
00:05:26.550 --> 00:05:27.320
do you open
121
00:05:27.320 --> 00:05:31.030
the club face, what does it look like, practice it that'll help you with your
122
00:05:31.030 --> 00:05:31.920
bounce, as well
123
00:05:31.920 --> 00:05:37.480
as your ability to control trajectory and spin.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.110
In this video, we're going to explore opening the club face for your finesse
2
00:00:08.110 --> 00:00:09.320
wedge shot.
3
00:00:09.320 --> 00:00:13.940
So a number of the finesse wedge shots are easier to hit if you open the club
4
00:00:13.940 --> 00:00:14.600
face.
5
00:00:14.600 --> 00:00:19.300
Opening the club face can expose a little bit more bounce and it can allow you
6
00:00:19.300 --> 00:00:19.940
to swing
7
00:00:19.940 --> 00:00:24.340
a little bit flatter or maybe even more aggressively on some of these shots.
8
00:00:24.340 --> 00:00:28.200
So as a skill, we want to get comfortable with open club face.
9
00:00:28.200 --> 00:00:31.560
I find that a lot of golfers struggle with it, so we'll talk through the two
10
00:00:31.560 --> 00:00:32.060
main things
11
00:00:32.060 --> 00:00:36.300
that I see golfers do poorly, and I got the GoPro so we can get the first
12
00:00:36.300 --> 00:00:37.160
person view
13
00:00:37.160 --> 00:00:38.360
of this.
14
00:00:38.360 --> 00:00:41.270
So rule number one is when you go to open the club face, you're going to open
15
00:00:41.270 --> 00:00:41.720
the club
16
00:00:41.720 --> 00:00:44.220
face and then take your normal grip.
17
00:00:44.220 --> 00:00:48.840
So what a lot of poor golfers do with this shot is they take their hands and
18
00:00:48.840 --> 00:00:49.500
they put
19
00:00:49.500 --> 00:00:53.440
it on the club and then they try to open the grip or open the club.
20
00:00:53.440 --> 00:00:58.190
And you'll see that in order to do that, I end up dropping that right shoulder,
21
00:00:58.190 --> 00:00:58.820
tilting
22
00:00:58.820 --> 00:01:01.620
a little bit behind the ball.
23
00:01:01.620 --> 00:01:04.660
And what will happen is as I apply speed, it's going to want to come back to my
24
00:01:04.660 --> 00:01:05.120
neutral
25
00:01:05.120 --> 00:01:07.160
position anyway.
26
00:01:07.160 --> 00:01:10.410
That's less of a danger here than in the full swing, because we're not going to
27
00:01:10.410 --> 00:01:11.020
be reaching
28
00:01:11.020 --> 00:01:15.330
anywhere near maximum speed, but it still happens, so it's easy to bring the
29
00:01:15.330 --> 00:01:15.960
club face
30
00:01:15.960 --> 00:01:16.960
back close.
31
00:01:16.960 --> 00:01:21.460
So step number one, rule number one is I like to use a standard where I've held
32
00:01:21.460 --> 00:01:22.080
the club
33
00:01:22.080 --> 00:01:26.490
up and I'm going to control how much I've opened the club and then take my grip
34
00:01:26.490 --> 00:01:26.800
.
35
00:01:26.800 --> 00:01:30.900
You could also do that down here, just like so, and use that as a little bit of
36
00:01:30.900 --> 00:01:32.000
a standardization
37
00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:33.000
technique.
38
00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:38.770
The second one is actually the more common issue that I see, which is when you
39
00:01:38.770 --> 00:01:39.220
go to
40
00:01:39.220 --> 00:01:46.770
adjust your stance for the open club face, I find a lot of golfers intuitively
41
00:01:46.770 --> 00:01:47.480
open their
42
00:01:47.480 --> 00:01:51.680
stance, but they do so without keeping the ball position the same.
43
00:01:51.680 --> 00:01:54.880
So I'll show you what I mean by that.
44
00:01:54.880 --> 00:02:00.580
So I am going to talk through what I think is kind of a more simple way to
45
00:02:00.580 --> 00:02:01.560
adjust for
46
00:02:01.560 --> 00:02:05.290
the high shot, and then I'll talk about the more advanced way to adjust for the
47
00:02:05.290 --> 00:02:06.440
high shot.
48
00:02:06.440 --> 00:02:09.240
So the simple way, I'm going to open the club face.
49
00:02:09.240 --> 00:02:12.790
The problem I see a lot of golfers do is then when they go to open the club
50
00:02:12.790 --> 00:02:13.760
face, they just
51
00:02:13.760 --> 00:02:18.960
turn their body, but they stayed in the same orientation kind of like this.
52
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:22.830
So what happened is now, here's the middle of my stance, I just move the ball
53
00:02:22.830 --> 00:02:23.440
position
54
00:02:23.440 --> 00:02:25.760
like two feet back in my stance.
55
00:02:25.760 --> 00:02:31.020
So when I go to hit, you can see, yeah, I hit an okay shot, but the purpose of
56
00:02:31.020 --> 00:02:31.200
opening
57
00:02:31.200 --> 00:02:35.080
the club face was to try to get a little bit more loft and that came out really
58
00:02:35.080 --> 00:02:35.880
low and
59
00:02:35.880 --> 00:02:40.600
cutting because the ball position was so far back.
60
00:02:40.600 --> 00:02:45.910
So what I advocate is trying to keep your stance more or less or your ball
61
00:02:45.910 --> 00:02:47.600
position the same.
62
00:02:47.600 --> 00:02:52.910
So I use this hula hoop to demonstrate how we're going to walk around the hula
63
00:02:52.910 --> 00:02:53.480
hoop to
64
00:02:53.480 --> 00:02:55.440
keep the ball position the same.
65
00:02:55.440 --> 00:02:59.700
So if I take the lie angle tool and I open the club face, you can see the club
66
00:02:59.700 --> 00:03:00.400
face starts
67
00:03:00.400 --> 00:03:01.840
pointing over there.
68
00:03:01.840 --> 00:03:05.870
Now I could either adjust for it by walking around the circle, keeping the ball
69
00:03:05.870 --> 00:03:06.440
position
70
00:03:06.440 --> 00:03:12.440
the same, and now the club face is aimed at the target.
71
00:03:12.440 --> 00:03:16.920
Or the other option is the more advanced option is I can lower the handle.
72
00:03:16.920 --> 00:03:21.540
So even though this club face is open, you can see as I lower the handle, that
73
00:03:21.540 --> 00:03:22.000
tends
74
00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:27.260
to make the face point in the direction of the target, that stops it from
75
00:03:27.260 --> 00:03:28.040
pointing too
76
00:03:28.040 --> 00:03:29.320
far to the right.
77
00:03:29.320 --> 00:03:34.520
So the simple way to play with the open club face is to open your stance.
78
00:03:34.520 --> 00:03:37.900
The more advanced way to play with the open club face is to actually close your
79
00:03:37.900 --> 00:03:38.320
stance
80
00:03:38.320 --> 00:03:40.480
and lower the handle.
81
00:03:40.480 --> 00:03:45.270
So we'll demonstrate kind of these adjustments, hopefully sometimes the hula
82
00:03:45.270 --> 00:03:46.080
hoop gets in
83
00:03:46.080 --> 00:03:50.480
the way of these demos, but we'll see how we do here.
84
00:03:50.480 --> 00:03:54.400
Okay, so quick demonstration, got the ball kind of in the middle of the hula
85
00:03:54.400 --> 00:03:55.080
hoop, and
86
00:03:55.080 --> 00:04:01.190
if I just baseline it, just do kind of a standard shot, we'll see again, oft
87
00:04:01.190 --> 00:04:02.320
entimes we end up
88
00:04:02.320 --> 00:04:03.320
hitting the hula hoop.
89
00:04:03.320 --> 00:04:06.600
And once I do that once or twice, I start pulling away from it.
90
00:04:06.600 --> 00:04:08.920
So we'll see how many we can get in here.
91
00:04:08.920 --> 00:04:13.330
So now as I open the club face, I put it a little bit more there, you can see
92
00:04:13.330 --> 00:04:13.960
the ball
93
00:04:13.960 --> 00:04:20.080
position is still the same, and if I feel like I swing around my ball position,
94
00:04:20.080 --> 00:04:20.760
you'll
95
00:04:20.760 --> 00:04:26.280
see that it has a little bit more of a higher trajectory, a little more spin,
96
00:04:26.280 --> 00:04:27.240
and compared
97
00:04:27.240 --> 00:04:30.840
to where I had my body position, it goes a little bit to the right.
98
00:04:30.840 --> 00:04:35.570
Now this more advanced one I know will hit the hula hoop, so we'll see how well
99
00:04:35.570 --> 00:04:36.600
we can
100
00:04:36.600 --> 00:04:38.960
mentally prepare for that.
101
00:04:38.960 --> 00:04:42.470
So the more advanced version, I'm going to open the club face, ball position is
102
00:04:42.470 --> 00:04:42.840
going
103
00:04:42.840 --> 00:04:44.640
to go even forward.
104
00:04:44.640 --> 00:04:48.690
Now you can see here's where I am, chestwise, I'm going to bring this foot back
105
00:04:48.690 --> 00:04:49.280
, and the
106
00:04:49.280 --> 00:04:54.110
reason I'm going to bring this foot back is so that I can bring the club on a
107
00:04:54.110 --> 00:04:54.800
flatter
108
00:04:54.800 --> 00:04:55.800
angle.
109
00:04:55.800 --> 00:04:59.200
If this is in the way, you'll see that the club wants to swing a little bit
110
00:04:59.200 --> 00:05:00.040
more up,
111
00:05:00.040 --> 00:05:06.420
and when I have the club down like this, I want to swing really flat, hey, only
112
00:05:06.420 --> 00:05:08.080
nip it.
113
00:05:08.080 --> 00:05:13.340
So I want to swing really flat, and by getting that foot back, it creates a
114
00:05:13.340 --> 00:05:14.040
little bit more
115
00:05:14.040 --> 00:05:15.040
space.
116
00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:20.300
That can be really useful on awkward bunker shots, as well as awkward downhill
117
00:05:20.300 --> 00:05:20.960
side-hill
118
00:05:20.960 --> 00:05:21.960
lives.
119
00:05:21.960 --> 00:05:26.550
So this video just talks through the simple ways and the complex ways for how
120
00:05:26.550 --> 00:05:27.320
do you open
121
00:05:27.320 --> 00:05:31.030
the club face, what does it look like, practice it that'll help you with your
122
00:05:31.030 --> 00:05:31.920
bounce, as well
123
00:05:31.920 --> 00:05:37.480
as your ability to control trajectory and spin.
