A simple trait you'll see with elite-level wedge swings.
A 3/4 follow-through on your distance wedges helps with a few key areas to that pattern. It helps control trajectory and spin, ensures that you used more of a casting pattern, and prevents you from swinging too hard for the wedge shots.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.600
This distance wedge drill is three-quarter follow through so you'll notice when
2
00:00:04.600 --> 00:00:08.920
you're watching tour pros on TV when they get inside about a hundred fifty
3
00:00:08.920 --> 00:00:14.440
yards especially on really fast greens you'll tend to see a little bit more of
4
00:00:14.440 --> 00:00:21.000
a hold-off movement to their full swing so this is usually let's say eight iron
5
00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:25.840
and below but particularly for the wedges so whether when it's kind of a
6
00:00:25.840 --> 00:00:30.460
full swing you'll tend to see a lot of these three-quarter follow-throughs and
7
00:00:30.460 --> 00:00:34.160
that tends to produce the spin rate where you're going to have a little bit
8
00:00:34.160 --> 00:00:38.600
more of a one hop and stop as opposed to going all out you'll tend to have
9
00:00:38.600 --> 00:00:43.320
really higher you'll you'll tend to have the higher spin rates which on those
10
00:00:43.320 --> 00:00:47.080
quick greens you can spin the ball back more than you would want so this helps
11
00:00:47.080 --> 00:00:52.320
them with trajectory control this helps them with their spin and ultimately
12
00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:52.540
helps
13
00:00:52.540 --> 00:00:57.580
them with distance control or proximity to all now one of the reasons that they
14
00:00:57.580 --> 00:00:57.660
're
15
00:00:57.660 --> 00:01:03.360
able to do this is when it gets to the the shorter end when we're working on
16
00:01:03.360 --> 00:01:08.340
the wedges it's a little bit more of this cast pattern so this cast pattern
17
00:01:08.340 --> 00:01:08.860
will
18
00:01:08.860 --> 00:01:14.500
tend to have a little bit earlier arm and shoulder movement kind of like so
19
00:01:14.500 --> 00:01:15.160
with
20
00:01:15.160 --> 00:01:19.780
a little bit more of the upper body lunging on top of it and so that
21
00:01:19.780 --> 00:01:24.940
combination has the club pass my body a little bit quicker or a little bit
22
00:01:24.940 --> 00:01:31.480
quicker sooner in the follow-through and it by having my arms start early my
23
00:01:31.480 --> 00:01:34.890
feeling is almost more like it's just kind of coasting through impact as
24
00:01:34.890 --> 00:01:35.540
opposed
25
00:01:35.540 --> 00:01:39.400
to the the stock tour swing or the driver swing where I'm gonna have more of
26
00:01:39.400 --> 00:01:45.460
that lag and kind of downswing loading when I have that lag and downswing
27
00:01:45.460 --> 00:01:50.200
loading I'm gonna end up having so much speed down at the bottom that it would
28
00:01:50.200 --> 00:01:55.360
be very difficult for me to actually go past or it would be very difficult for
29
00:01:55.360 --> 00:01:59.120
me to stop in this three-quarter position the momentum of the club is
30
00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:03.840
gonna help carry everything to a full follow-through the other thing that you
31
00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:03.920
'll
32
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:08.560
notice or the other thing that you may struggle with if you're trying to work
33
00:02:08.560 --> 00:02:13.880
on these a little bit more three-quarter follow-through is if you tend to
34
00:02:13.880 --> 00:02:14.920
really
35
00:02:14.920 --> 00:02:19.740
rehinge and use the wrist very actively kind of like this down at the bottom
36
00:02:19.740 --> 00:02:24.620
you'll see that that tends to bring the club well up past that three-quarter
37
00:02:24.620 --> 00:02:30.380
position so making sure that you have that good unhinge in that follow-through
38
00:02:30.380 --> 00:02:34.720
will help make holding it off or controlling the spin or getting that
39
00:02:34.720 --> 00:02:39.060
three-quarter follow-through a little bit easier so walking through it in slow
40
00:02:39.060 --> 00:02:44.620
motion you'll see during the the backswing pivot I make sure I've got a little
41
00:02:44.620 --> 00:02:48.020
bit more of that one-inch lean like we talked about here in the distance
42
00:02:48.020 --> 00:02:48.360
section
43
00:02:48.360 --> 00:02:52.520
where it's going a little bit more towards the target a little bit less of
44
00:02:52.520 --> 00:02:59.380
a driver load and then as I start down there's a little bit more of that lunge
45
00:02:59.380 --> 00:03:04.640
as my arm straighten and then as I get down towards the bottom everything kind
46
00:03:04.640 --> 00:03:11.080
of releases and works together on the way through as opposed to having more of
47
00:03:11.080 --> 00:03:16.720
that bracing that comes from that proximal to distal loading or that
48
00:03:16.720 --> 00:03:22.360
kinematic sequence thing so then working through kind of a full speed more
49
00:03:22.360 --> 00:03:22.760
neutral
50
00:03:22.760 --> 00:03:28.920
ball position upper body just a little bit nose just on top of the golf ball
51
00:03:28.920 --> 00:03:34.000
a little bit more of that three-quarter follow-through to help control the
52
00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:39.000
spin now it's not imperative that you stop absolutely a three-quarter but you
53
00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:42.480
notice as I do it those arms tend to just stay long on the way through as
54
00:03:42.480 --> 00:03:48.080
opposed to having a ton of that leg and letting them whip past like I would do
55
00:03:48.080 --> 00:03:53.640
more with the stock full swing especially with the longer clubs
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.600
