While you can make the same swing for all clubs, you'll naturally struggle with the clubs where that motion is not ideal. There are differences in the pivot as well as the release for the tour's best wedge players and drivers of the golf ball. With wedges, it is more advantageous to stay centered in the backswing and then work more vertically (up and away from the ball) in the downswing. This helps to put the bottom of the swing closer to the golf ball as well as to help with the low launch/high spin goal.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.040
This drill is looking at the cast pivot for wedges specifically we're going to
2
00:00:05.040 --> 00:00:05.440
talk about
3
00:00:05.440 --> 00:00:10.600
distance wedges in this video. Now the cast pivot does relate to the finesse
4
00:00:10.600 --> 00:00:12.160
wedge but we're
5
00:00:12.160 --> 00:00:16.720
specifically going to talk about the the pivot for distance wedges which are
6
00:00:16.720 --> 00:00:17.680
typically between
7
00:00:17.680 --> 00:00:24.480
about 40 yards and 100 yards for most golfers. We know that we want to have
8
00:00:24.480 --> 00:00:25.680
more of a kind of
9
00:00:25.680 --> 00:00:31.920
coasting kind of supported slower movement of the body when we get into the
10
00:00:31.920 --> 00:00:33.760
distance wedges.
11
00:00:33.760 --> 00:00:38.640
What I see on 3D is that typically good wedge players show more of a cast
12
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:39.280
pattern and I've
13
00:00:39.280 --> 00:00:44.880
I've talked a bit about the cast pattern being an early movement of the arms
14
00:00:44.880 --> 00:00:45.840
and more of a
15
00:00:45.840 --> 00:00:50.720
stabilizing unit of the body but I want to get into a little bit more detail
16
00:00:50.720 --> 00:00:51.440
because we've had a few
17
00:00:51.440 --> 00:00:57.010
questions recently about how do I control distance with my distance wedge? How
18
00:00:57.010 --> 00:00:58.480
do I you know control
19
00:00:58.480 --> 00:01:02.540
my low point? Basically what's the difference between the distance wedge and
20
00:01:02.540 --> 00:01:03.680
the stock full swing?
21
00:01:03.680 --> 00:01:08.560
So with the distance wedge we're going to talk about this cast pivot. The cast
22
00:01:08.560 --> 00:01:10.080
pivot involves a
23
00:01:10.080 --> 00:01:15.840
couple movements that you might not think would work well with a good pivot but
24
00:01:15.840 --> 00:01:16.800
let's start by
25
00:01:16.800 --> 00:01:22.800
looking at what are the problematic moves right? With a distance wedge we're
26
00:01:22.800 --> 00:01:23.280
trying to get the
27
00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:27.600
bottom of the swing right at the golf ball. We're very close to the golf ball.
28
00:01:27.600 --> 00:01:29.120
With the full swing
29
00:01:29.120 --> 00:01:32.290
we're trying to get the bottom of the swing well out in front of the golf ball.
30
00:01:32.290 --> 00:01:32.800
With the
31
00:01:32.800 --> 00:01:37.160
distance wedge we're trying to launch it low with high amount of spin. With the
32
00:01:37.160 --> 00:01:37.920
full swing we're
33
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:42.300
trying to launch it higher with low spin so we can see that we're starting to
34
00:01:42.300 --> 00:01:43.040
come up against
35
00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:47.520
some opposite objectives even though we've got a similar looking golf club. The
36
00:01:47.520 --> 00:01:48.320
other thing is with
37
00:01:48.320 --> 00:01:53.530
the steeper lie angle and shorter club that naturally changes the steep shallow
38
00:01:53.530 --> 00:01:54.320
balance and
39
00:01:54.320 --> 00:01:58.570
makes it a little bit steeper. So with the pivot for the distance wedge to a
40
00:01:58.570 --> 00:02:00.640
company or to satisfy
41
00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:06.400
all these factors the pivot is going to be a little bit more of the upper body
42
00:02:06.400 --> 00:02:07.760
going up and the upper
43
00:02:07.760 --> 00:02:14.540
body going forward primarily during the early part of the downswing. So I feel
44
00:02:14.540 --> 00:02:16.560
like the trigger
45
00:02:16.560 --> 00:02:21.110
is a little bit more vertical like I'm pushing against the ground almost like I
46
00:02:21.110 --> 00:02:22.240
'm trying to stand
47
00:02:22.240 --> 00:02:27.840
up and turn like so and by doing that when I start putting more of that
48
00:02:27.840 --> 00:02:30.080
vertical movement in
49
00:02:30.080 --> 00:02:34.960
that's going to help my arms cast and get the club low to the ground which will
50
00:02:34.960 --> 00:02:35.600
help create low
51
00:02:35.600 --> 00:02:40.480
point right at the golf ball or just in front of the golf ball. Compare that to
52
00:02:40.480 --> 00:02:41.520
the full swing where
53
00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:46.400
I'm going to have a little bit more of that drop so that my body can rotate
54
00:02:46.400 --> 00:02:47.680
there I'm pushing a lot
55
00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:53.250
more laterally so that I can pull on the handle and create some good lag and
56
00:02:53.250 --> 00:02:54.560
shaft lean so that
57
00:02:54.560 --> 00:02:58.560
then when I extend my arms the bottom of the swing is well out in front of the
58
00:02:58.560 --> 00:02:59.120
golf ball.
59
00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:04.690
So again for distance wedge I'm going to feel a little bit more of an up and
60
00:03:04.690 --> 00:03:06.000
forward pattern
61
00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:10.880
so that I finish in a good tall everything facing the golf ball pattern as
62
00:03:10.880 --> 00:03:12.000
opposed to a
63
00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:17.160
really good hip slightly ahead of my lower body or hip slightly ahead of my
64
00:03:17.160 --> 00:03:18.000
upper body
65
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:22.960
in a good bracing pattern. So we'll demonstrate just the pivot movement I'm
66
00:03:22.960 --> 00:03:23.440
going to take my
67
00:03:23.440 --> 00:03:27.350
arms place them across my shoulders I'm going to make a little backswing while
68
00:03:27.350 --> 00:03:28.560
shifting just slightly
69
00:03:28.560 --> 00:03:33.440
towards the target and then I'm going to focus on this upper body going up I'm
70
00:03:33.440 --> 00:03:34.000
going to focus on
71
00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:39.570
my right shoulder kind of staying high it's going through just like that. So in
72
00:03:39.570 --> 00:03:40.320
full speed
73
00:03:40.320 --> 00:03:45.190
kind of like that where basically it's feeling like that right shoulder stays
74
00:03:45.190 --> 00:03:47.360
high as it rotates.
75
00:03:47.360 --> 00:03:51.510
Now you'll see from the down the line that that's subtle but it's subtle
76
00:03:51.510 --> 00:03:53.360
compared to the drop
77
00:03:53.360 --> 00:03:58.240
that you'll see a little bit more when I'm hitting shots with a 7 iron or lower
78
00:03:58.240 --> 00:04:00.560
. So what we'll do
79
00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:04.560
is we'll then combine that cast release pattern where basically I'm just
80
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:06.240
letting those arms extend
81
00:04:06.240 --> 00:04:10.490
and I'm going to use the body working a little bit more vertically to help
82
00:04:10.490 --> 00:04:11.440
trigger those arms
83
00:04:11.440 --> 00:04:17.200
extending to help control the bottom of the swing and I'll use the rate of my
84
00:04:17.200 --> 00:04:18.720
body rotating
85
00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:25.360
to help control the distance. So then from down the line you it will look very
86
00:04:25.360 --> 00:04:26.720
subtle but it shows up
87
00:04:26.720 --> 00:04:31.800
pretty clear on 3D that there's a good amount of lift and a good amount of
88
00:04:31.800 --> 00:04:33.280
moving slightly away
89
00:04:33.280 --> 00:04:39.440
from the golf ball during the downswing. So it's a little bit of a stand-up
90
00:04:39.440 --> 00:04:41.280
movement which I put
91
00:04:41.280 --> 00:04:48.020
more in the cast pattern. So if I did let's say the hip height position would
92
00:04:48.020 --> 00:04:50.800
look something
93
00:04:50.800 --> 00:05:02.960
like that and then if I went into my 3/4 it would look a little bit. Now I kind
94
00:05:02.960 --> 00:05:03.920
of ratcheted up
95
00:05:03.920 --> 00:05:07.830
my acceleration rate so that wasn't the greatest shot but you could see the
96
00:05:07.830 --> 00:05:08.800
overall pattern.
97
00:05:08.800 --> 00:05:12.800
That will help me with the solid contact and really that'll help a lot with the
98
00:05:12.800 --> 00:05:14.080
turf contact
99
00:05:14.080 --> 00:05:18.080
and by making solid contact both with the turf and the golf ball that'll allow
100
00:05:18.080 --> 00:05:18.720
my brain the
101
00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:22.840
ability to develop feel. Now from the face-on we're going to have a little bit
102
00:05:22.840 --> 00:05:24.960
more or you'll be able
103
00:05:24.960 --> 00:05:31.450
to see a little bit of that upper body staying taller is what a lot of guys
104
00:05:31.450 --> 00:05:33.040
describe it as or
105
00:05:33.040 --> 00:05:36.960
the right shoulder staying high but what is really happening is the upper body
106
00:05:36.960 --> 00:05:37.840
is moving a little
107
00:05:37.840 --> 00:05:41.920
bit more forward and up to help trigger the arm extending.
108
00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:52.480
Kind of like that. If you compare that to a little bit more of the full swing
109
00:05:52.480 --> 00:05:53.440
pivot where I have a
110
00:05:53.440 --> 00:05:59.930
bunch of lag you'll see that that movement is a little bit more quiet passive
111
00:05:59.930 --> 00:06:01.680
but definitely more
112
00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:08.560
vertical as opposed to linear or horizontal.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.040
This drill is looking at the cast pivot for wedges specifically we're going to
2
00:00:05.040 --> 00:00:05.440
talk about
3
00:00:05.440 --> 00:00:10.600
distance wedges in this video. Now the cast pivot does relate to the finesse
4
00:00:10.600 --> 00:00:12.160
wedge but we're
5
00:00:12.160 --> 00:00:16.720
specifically going to talk about the the pivot for distance wedges which are
6
00:00:16.720 --> 00:00:17.680
typically between
7
00:00:17.680 --> 00:00:24.480
about 40 yards and 100 yards for most golfers. We know that we want to have
8
00:00:24.480 --> 00:00:25.680
more of a kind of
9
00:00:25.680 --> 00:00:31.920
coasting kind of supported slower movement of the body when we get into the
10
00:00:31.920 --> 00:00:33.760
distance wedges.
11
00:00:33.760 --> 00:00:38.640
What I see on 3D is that typically good wedge players show more of a cast
12
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:39.280
pattern and I've
13
00:00:39.280 --> 00:00:44.880
I've talked a bit about the cast pattern being an early movement of the arms
14
00:00:44.880 --> 00:00:45.840
and more of a
15
00:00:45.840 --> 00:00:50.720
stabilizing unit of the body but I want to get into a little bit more detail
16
00:00:50.720 --> 00:00:51.440
because we've had a few
17
00:00:51.440 --> 00:00:57.010
questions recently about how do I control distance with my distance wedge? How
18
00:00:57.010 --> 00:00:58.480
do I you know control
19
00:00:58.480 --> 00:01:02.540
my low point? Basically what's the difference between the distance wedge and
20
00:01:02.540 --> 00:01:03.680
the stock full swing?
21
00:01:03.680 --> 00:01:08.560
So with the distance wedge we're going to talk about this cast pivot. The cast
22
00:01:08.560 --> 00:01:10.080
pivot involves a
23
00:01:10.080 --> 00:01:15.840
couple movements that you might not think would work well with a good pivot but
24
00:01:15.840 --> 00:01:16.800
let's start by
25
00:01:16.800 --> 00:01:22.800
looking at what are the problematic moves right? With a distance wedge we're
26
00:01:22.800 --> 00:01:23.280
trying to get the
27
00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:27.600
bottom of the swing right at the golf ball. We're very close to the golf ball.
28
00:01:27.600 --> 00:01:29.120
With the full swing
29
00:01:29.120 --> 00:01:32.290
we're trying to get the bottom of the swing well out in front of the golf ball.
30
00:01:32.290 --> 00:01:32.800
With the
31
00:01:32.800 --> 00:01:37.160
distance wedge we're trying to launch it low with high amount of spin. With the
32
00:01:37.160 --> 00:01:37.920
full swing we're
33
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:42.300
trying to launch it higher with low spin so we can see that we're starting to
34
00:01:42.300 --> 00:01:43.040
come up against
35
00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:47.520
some opposite objectives even though we've got a similar looking golf club. The
36
00:01:47.520 --> 00:01:48.320
other thing is with
37
00:01:48.320 --> 00:01:53.530
the steeper lie angle and shorter club that naturally changes the steep shallow
38
00:01:53.530 --> 00:01:54.320
balance and
39
00:01:54.320 --> 00:01:58.570
makes it a little bit steeper. So with the pivot for the distance wedge to a
40
00:01:58.570 --> 00:02:00.640
company or to satisfy
41
00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:06.400
all these factors the pivot is going to be a little bit more of the upper body
42
00:02:06.400 --> 00:02:07.760
going up and the upper
43
00:02:07.760 --> 00:02:14.540
body going forward primarily during the early part of the downswing. So I feel
44
00:02:14.540 --> 00:02:16.560
like the trigger
45
00:02:16.560 --> 00:02:21.110
is a little bit more vertical like I'm pushing against the ground almost like I
46
00:02:21.110 --> 00:02:22.240
'm trying to stand
47
00:02:22.240 --> 00:02:27.840
up and turn like so and by doing that when I start putting more of that
48
00:02:27.840 --> 00:02:30.080
vertical movement in
49
00:02:30.080 --> 00:02:34.960
that's going to help my arms cast and get the club low to the ground which will
50
00:02:34.960 --> 00:02:35.600
help create low
51
00:02:35.600 --> 00:02:40.480
point right at the golf ball or just in front of the golf ball. Compare that to
52
00:02:40.480 --> 00:02:41.520
the full swing where
53
00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:46.400
I'm going to have a little bit more of that drop so that my body can rotate
54
00:02:46.400 --> 00:02:47.680
there I'm pushing a lot
55
00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:53.250
more laterally so that I can pull on the handle and create some good lag and
56
00:02:53.250 --> 00:02:54.560
shaft lean so that
57
00:02:54.560 --> 00:02:58.560
then when I extend my arms the bottom of the swing is well out in front of the
58
00:02:58.560 --> 00:02:59.120
golf ball.
59
00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:04.690
So again for distance wedge I'm going to feel a little bit more of an up and
60
00:03:04.690 --> 00:03:06.000
forward pattern
61
00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:10.880
so that I finish in a good tall everything facing the golf ball pattern as
62
00:03:10.880 --> 00:03:12.000
opposed to a
63
00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:17.160
really good hip slightly ahead of my lower body or hip slightly ahead of my
64
00:03:17.160 --> 00:03:18.000
upper body
65
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:22.960
in a good bracing pattern. So we'll demonstrate just the pivot movement I'm
66
00:03:22.960 --> 00:03:23.440
going to take my
67
00:03:23.440 --> 00:03:27.350
arms place them across my shoulders I'm going to make a little backswing while
68
00:03:27.350 --> 00:03:28.560
shifting just slightly
69
00:03:28.560 --> 00:03:33.440
towards the target and then I'm going to focus on this upper body going up I'm
70
00:03:33.440 --> 00:03:34.000
going to focus on
71
00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:39.570
my right shoulder kind of staying high it's going through just like that. So in
72
00:03:39.570 --> 00:03:40.320
full speed
73
00:03:40.320 --> 00:03:45.190
kind of like that where basically it's feeling like that right shoulder stays
74
00:03:45.190 --> 00:03:47.360
high as it rotates.
75
00:03:47.360 --> 00:03:51.510
Now you'll see from the down the line that that's subtle but it's subtle
76
00:03:51.510 --> 00:03:53.360
compared to the drop
77
00:03:53.360 --> 00:03:58.240
that you'll see a little bit more when I'm hitting shots with a 7 iron or lower
78
00:03:58.240 --> 00:04:00.560
. So what we'll do
79
00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:04.560
is we'll then combine that cast release pattern where basically I'm just
80
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:06.240
letting those arms extend
81
00:04:06.240 --> 00:04:10.490
and I'm going to use the body working a little bit more vertically to help
82
00:04:10.490 --> 00:04:11.440
trigger those arms
83
00:04:11.440 --> 00:04:17.200
extending to help control the bottom of the swing and I'll use the rate of my
84
00:04:17.200 --> 00:04:18.720
body rotating
85
00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:25.360
to help control the distance. So then from down the line you it will look very
86
00:04:25.360 --> 00:04:26.720
subtle but it shows up
87
00:04:26.720 --> 00:04:31.800
pretty clear on 3D that there's a good amount of lift and a good amount of
88
00:04:31.800 --> 00:04:33.280
moving slightly away
89
00:04:33.280 --> 00:04:39.440
from the golf ball during the downswing. So it's a little bit of a stand-up
90
00:04:39.440 --> 00:04:41.280
movement which I put
91
00:04:41.280 --> 00:04:48.020
more in the cast pattern. So if I did let's say the hip height position would
92
00:04:48.020 --> 00:04:50.800
look something
93
00:04:50.800 --> 00:05:02.960
like that and then if I went into my 3/4 it would look a little bit. Now I kind
94
00:05:02.960 --> 00:05:03.920
of ratcheted up
95
00:05:03.920 --> 00:05:07.830
my acceleration rate so that wasn't the greatest shot but you could see the
96
00:05:07.830 --> 00:05:08.800
overall pattern.
97
00:05:08.800 --> 00:05:12.800
That will help me with the solid contact and really that'll help a lot with the
98
00:05:12.800 --> 00:05:14.080
turf contact
99
00:05:14.080 --> 00:05:18.080
and by making solid contact both with the turf and the golf ball that'll allow
100
00:05:18.080 --> 00:05:18.720
my brain the
101
00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:22.840
ability to develop feel. Now from the face-on we're going to have a little bit
102
00:05:22.840 --> 00:05:24.960
more or you'll be able
103
00:05:24.960 --> 00:05:31.450
to see a little bit of that upper body staying taller is what a lot of guys
104
00:05:31.450 --> 00:05:33.040
describe it as or
105
00:05:33.040 --> 00:05:36.960
the right shoulder staying high but what is really happening is the upper body
106
00:05:36.960 --> 00:05:37.840
is moving a little
107
00:05:37.840 --> 00:05:41.920
bit more forward and up to help trigger the arm extending.
108
00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:52.480
Kind of like that. If you compare that to a little bit more of the full swing
109
00:05:52.480 --> 00:05:53.440
pivot where I have a
110
00:05:53.440 --> 00:05:59.930
bunch of lag you'll see that that movement is a little bit more quiet passive
111
00:05:59.930 --> 00:06:01.680
but definitely more
112
00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:08.560
vertical as opposed to linear or horizontal.
